Dropped Frames on New Installation

I have Final Cut installed on my G4, G5 and PowerBook and it works fine.
I just installed Final Cut 6 on my IMAC G5 - 1.8Ghz Power PC with 1.5GB Ram.
When I play back video on my timeline it keeps on reporting dropped frames.
I've tried adjusting some of the suggested settings and still get the same results.
Also, when I connect my DSR-20 through the FireWire port, the video only updates on the monitor when i stop playback. When I hit play, I hear the audio playing but the video stays still until i stop again and it updates to where the playhead is on the timeline.
Any ideas on why this might be happening ?

Originally I had the video captured on an external drive which has never been a problem on my other computers. I tried connecting this drive through both firewire and USB with the same results. I tried copying the files onto the internal drive, but that didn't change anything. My internal drive is a Maxtor 7Y250M0
The video I am working on is DV NTSC 48kHz

  • Dropped frames on new iMac

    Hi All,
I've been playing with FCP on a new core 2 duo iMac and been having really weird behavior. I had imported a bit of video with iMovie previously from a DV camcorder and have now been editing it using FCP. Every time I let it preview the movie, it keeps reporting to me that it is dropping frames. Now, I've tried resetting the RT settings for the video and nothing helps unless I turn off the audio clips. Once I do that, it plays fine. This is a very simple movie and its a very new iMac, so I'm not sure whats going on. It should be playing without any issues. Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    J Silverman

    Hi thrillcat,
Ahh, thanks for the info. I was just about to recapture it to see if it would work. I'll try it out.
    Thanks,

  • Dropping frames on new quad G5 when printing to video

it doesn't matter if the sequence is nested or not, used to work perfectly with dual processor with the same settings, Any ideas?
Ps media is stored on external harddrve

I don't know the specs of your machine however...
Alternatevely you could open the RT dropdown menu
and turn playback video quality and playback frame rate to the minimum and close

  • Optimizing work flow in FCP on new iMac? (dropped frames)

    Hello-
I've recently purchased a new iMac, first in about 6 years. I'm looking for some advice about optimizing my work flow in FCP. I am largely self-taught, using FCP for hobbyist/amateur video.
Until this new computer, I have been using FCP on other people's Macs (schools, arts institutions, etc), only resorting to my old Powerbook when absolutely necessary. So I have not had to worry about performance issues until now.
I am shooting on a Kodak Zi8 pocket cam in 1080p HD .MOV files, 1920x1080 H.264, AAC audio.
In my first attempts at editing the footage, I find that I am getting dropped frames on playback at every edit point - any time I cut between shots, add titles, etc.
(I also tried editing some much smaller, compressed files (QT 854x480, H.264, AAC audio) in the timeline and had the frame drop problem.)
Also, when I add titles, they do not preview render - I have to render them completely to be able to playback.
When I allow FCP to change the sequence settings to match the clip, I get the following:
    1920 x 1080
    Aspect: HDTV 1080i (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
In this instance I am editing footage that is stored on the local HD, but I have also tried editing footage from a USB 2.0 external drive, and got the same dropped frame problem.
...its a little frustrating to get these performance issues on this new computer, so I hope that someone here can help me resolve some of my problems. Hopefully this is a work flow issue, but if its a lack of hardware, well, shame on me for not looking into it enough.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi -
H.264 is a recording and delivery format, but as you have discovered, it is very difficult to edit. Its qualities of recording a high quality image in a small file size, which make it attractive for use in Flash based camcorders, makes it very difficult for FCP to work with. Attempting to work in H.264 makes FCP drop frames, require constant rendering, etc.
The best solution is to convert your footage to an edit friendly file format, such a ProRes LT or AIC. There will be minimal impact on the quality of the image. This conversion will result in files that are much larger than your original files, but will work easily in FCP.
You don't say if you have FCS or just FCP, but if you do have FCS then you can use Compressor to do the conversion.
    Hope this helps.

  • New Intel iMac, FCE 3.0 and dropped frames on capture

Just got a brand new 20 inch iMAC running 10.4.9 with 2G of RAM and over 200G of space. Can't capture more than a minute or two of footage to the hard drive without a dropped frame abort.
Have no problems capturing the same tape to a nearly full Lacie external drive through my 4 year old inverted bowl G4 running 10.3.9 with only 512 MB of RAM.
Does anyone know if it could be because I am running FCE 3.0 on the new iMAC? I've read that 3.0 is not made for the Intel and that the machine has to do some behind-the-scenes tricks to make it work.
Might upgrading to 3.5 solve my capture problem?

I think that article is misleading. It seems as if that if you have 3.0 or earlier (FCE, of course), combined with OS 10.4.9, no matter WHERE you capture to, you will get dropped frames. There are three (3) solutions, and they are as follows:
    1. Archive and Install to 10.4.8
    2. Buy the upgrade to 3.5.
And the newest one, though not tested by many people:
    3. Drag and drop the drive that you capture to in Spotlight's Privacy window. That's in System Prefs.>Spotlight>Privacy.
    I can't test the 3rd one as I have 3.5.

  • Dropped frames on playback doesn't replicate in a new user account

I have been using FCP 4.5 for some time without any problems. Recently I have not been able to play clips in the Timeline without an immediate error message of dropped frames during playback. If I double-click the clip it will play in the Viewer perfectly. This will happen even if the only sequence open contains a single audio track.
I tried the same thing in a new user account and everything worked as it should, so the problem appears to be a conflict confined to my original account. I've tried moving prefs files for FCP and Quicktime but no joy. All source material is on a separate internal drive to the OS & project files.
    Any ideas?

It seems that I did not remove all the necessary prefs files - I have done so now and all is well, thanks to Ken Stone. He has a thorough description of exactly what to trash here:

  • Dropped frames on Brand New Macbook and Final Cut Express!

I have recently bought a New Macbook, and installed Final Cut Express HD 3.5 on it. I have Quicktime Player 7.3. My Macbook is a 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor. Memory is 1GB 667 Mhz. I have already used up a lot of Hard Drive on my Laptop with other applications, and in my capture window it says that I have 24.5GB space (109 minutes). Could this be the problem - not enough space?
I have looked over past discussions on this and in some cases I see that a downgrade to the old version of Quicktime has been necessary. As I have a new Macbook and new Final Cut Express HD, could this still be the case?
Also I have been reading the manuals, and wonder if the frame rate or time code settings could be affecting the dropped frames? Does anyone know where I can check this?
I'm a total newbie to FCE so be gentle....
    Appreciate all advice

You are quite frankly, a genius. I have just managed to capture my footage after a gruelling few days of trying just about anything. Your recommendations regarding settings and also the external hard drive have fixed my problem.
I'm going to have a large glass of wine now to celebrate my victory - and then I'm going to try and figure out how you actually use FCE after that.... er hem... now where did I put that manual..?
    Thanks loads

  • Dropping Frames on playback on brand new Mac

Ok, I just this week recieved my new MacBook Pro, and I have a problem that i think I know the issue but I just need some simple confirmation from the pros. I Am experiencing dropped frames on playback no matter what settings i change So I am going to assume that I need a faster Harddrive than USB 2.0 (500 Gigs 65-70% capacity). Am i Correct? should i spend the money on a Firewire 800, will that make the dropped frame problems stop, because all I am doing is changing a clips speed and it continues to drop frames aqnd barely play. Thank You all in advance

The cards are made by several manufacturers, and i don't think there's much difference between one and the next except for the number of ports it adds.
http://www.weibetech.com sells external SATA drives and arrays, and if you go with an array, I'd look at http://www.caldigit.com for those...
http://www.g-technology.com also sells some external SATA drive setups.
firmtek also sells a dandy, it's reviewed here: http://www.barefeats.com/hard71.html
You'll need the express 34 card adapter, and they are sold by cal digit, and others like: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposataexpress34.html
    That should get you started...

  • Dropped frames warning on new Macbook Pro

I've been running FCP faultlessly for the last year or so on a Macbook Pro 15". I recently bought a Macbook Pro 17" with the I5 quad core processor and for the first time I'm getting dropped frame error messages here and there. This is the last thing I would have expected on my all singing and dancing new Macbook Pro!
I've set up FCP, as far as I can see, exactly the same as my other Macbook and I've updated FCP to 7.03. Is there something more that I should have done?

I couldn't be assed going through the detail, because it would have been irrelevant wouldn't it? The old Macbook Pro was working perfectly with the same hard discs and the New Macbook Pro Quad Core wasn't,so the answer was going to be inside the new machine rather than any external device. That was where I was looking for help, on an internal Mac setting., I don't need to be lectured on the speed/size/performance of discs etc as I've running stuff for 2 years with no problems at all on the old machine.Sorry to have been so abrupt, but having just spent £2000 on my new Macbook Pro and then finding these errors appearing, as you can imagine I wasn't in the best of moods!
Anyway, I solved the problem with the help of an old post from Tom Wolsky, where he suggests "Trashing the preferences" as sometimes an element within this can become corrupted and cause strange problems. This free utility in effect resets the Mac.

  • Dropped frames during playback. Dumb question but I'm just starting to edit again with a new comp. and FC 7

    Hello out there,
It's been three years since I've used Final Cut Pro and I"m just getting back in to it. I'm working on my first project editing footage from my Canon 5D markII.
I'm trying to do a simple cross fade on the video track but when I watch the playback I'm getting a dropped frame message. I am using the highest video quality on my cannon but it seems like my computer with a 3.4 Ghz prossesor and 32 gigs of ram should be able to handle a simple cross fade.
Could it be that I need to change a setting somewhere to make FCP handle my canon's video better?
    Thank you so much!
    I appreciate the help.
    Mike

Please tell me you converted this footage...the native H.264 format the camera shoots...to ProRes. Because FCP doesn't work with H.264 well at all.

  • New FCE 4.0 User - "Warning - Dropped Frames"

Okay, so... I've captured some video that I'm trying to speed up significantly (1000%+). When I play it back I get a warning after 4-5 seconds of play that reads -
"One or more frames were dropped during playback"
Then it says to do one of the following:
    -Increase Disk Speed
    -Decrease # of RT Layers
-Limit RT Bandwidth in User Preferences
The dialogue also suggests I turn off "Unlimited RT" & lower the compression data rate. Sadly I'm not exactly sure what to do or what all this means. Is this even really a problem? What should I do?
Also... I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV22 MiniDV Handycam. I have FCE set to DV-NTSC. I wasn't sure what the differences between that and the 32KHz variations were. Could someone explain?
    Thanks.

The AUDIO can usually be recorded as either 12bit or 16bit.
If it is 12bit you use the "DV-NTSC 32KHz" Easy Setup otherwise you might get sync problems.
However, this is unlikely to cause dropped frames.
Usually you are taking the computer to its limits. Try rendering your clip and it should playback OK.

  • Constantly dropping frames

I am randomly getting lots of dropped frames when recording with OnLocation on lengthy recording sessions (1-2 hours). Like, several seconds will be missing. Sometimes this happens frequently, sometimes (but rarely) not at all. And sometimes recording even stops, as Windows says its lost the connection to the camera.
I'm using OnLocation on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. I've used it under new installations of XP and Vista with Boot Camp. I've tried recording to a 3rd partition setup as FAT32 or NTFS, as well as to the Macintosh partition with MacDrive. And I've tried two different firewire cables.
Sometimes the buffer bar will be full, or it will say the hard drive is not fast enough, but I want to say this isn't always the case (but I'm not 100% positive as I can't watch OnLocation the whole time I'm recording).
    What could be the problem??
    Thanks
    Zach

Wow, Ultra on a MAC,,,, Are you recording to tape or direct to disk? Are you recording HDV? m2t files have a long GOP structure, only 2 I frames per second. this means if you drop one I frame you loose a half second of video. I would try using new tapes made for HDV and cleaning the tape heads. If your doing regular DV, then I'd say it would have to be the MAC, Bootcamp not working right with Ultra as almost any computer these days will record DV direct to disk or clean tape heads and new tape. • Dropped frames on capture

    FCP 4.5
last week all workflow was fine.
yesterday (saturday) I could NOT even capture 1 minute of DV video without aborting after 20 seconds due to dropped frames. I wiped a drive clean thinking too much fragmentation. The only thing that changed is I updated OS from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 when it came out. I could however capture my DV using iMovie, export it, and work as normal in FCP. I hope FCP v6 comes out soon like at NAB next month and I get back to normalcy.

What I really want to do is go back to the previous version of Quicktime I was using (7.13) -- and I can't. I have deleted everything even resembling Quicktime from my system, as well as all the .plist files and prefs, and yet the 7.13 installer will not install; it says that I have a newer version (7.15) installed. Where else does Apple hide Quicktime prefs information?
Re-installing 7.15 did NOT solve the problem. Here are some more details:
When capturing from Final Cut Pro and iMovie, I get 50 or 51-frame gaps. Audio continues to be captured, only the video cuts out. Each gap seems to be 40 to 60 seconds apart. These gaps are actual holes in the data. Cinema Tools diagnoses the clips as damaged.
I removed the camera from the equation by using a different camera for capture.
I removed the media from the equation by using another DV cassette that I recorded recently and was able to capture from (last week) with 100% success.
I don't think QT is a factor either, because I deleted and removed all QT software and rebooted, and FCP still runs and still has the problem. I don't think QT is used unless you actually export from FCP.

  • OK, Dropped frames due to firewire+external hard drive+camcorder?

I have an iMac 2.4GHz , 1G Memory (I know this is less than ideal). I have a Firelite Smartdisk 120G plugged into iMac firewire. I am daisychaining my CanonZR500 into the external drive. When I capture video I have lots of dropped frames.
Anyone tell me why? Do I need a better external drive?
    Thanks

Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
Before we go any farther -
    • You should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
    • Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Do a quick search here on the site - it is mentioned daily if not hourly.
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct ... the most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. If you are working with HDV, you may have other issues ...
Beyond that, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCIe), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 34) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    • shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    • connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    • start the camera then the computer
    • capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    • shut down the camera and computer
    • disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    • start hard drive(s) and computer
    • move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    • edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    • copy the file back to the internal drive
    • shut everything down
    • disconnect the external drive(s)
    • connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    • start the camera then the computer
    • play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.
