DS 6.3 uid 7-bit ASCII?

My docs state that a uid must be 7-bit ASCII for version 5.x. I have long forgotten why I required this and am wondering what are the uid syntax constraints or issues in version 6.x.

The history behind the 7-bit check plugin is that some products like Netscape Messaging server (way back in time) would put the 8bit uid in the email headers and this was ofcourse against the RFC standards. So to make life simple all around, the 7-bit check plugin prevents non-ascii chars in the uid.
The directory server itself has no problems if you have non-ascii values in the uid as long as your apps can deal with it.

• Confirmed Bug in Siri - Texting a character not found in 7-bit ASCII Table Causes SMS to Fail

I am 99.9% certain I have singlehandedly discovered and solved a bug in Siri that causes SMS messages to fail (without a failure notice, i.e. red exclamation mark). This problem confounded me for several weeks. (Note: This issue does not affect iMessages.) After four hours of support phone calls to AT&T and Apple, 2 replacement iPhones (set up as new iPhones, and not restoring the backup), a SIM card replacement, a reprovisioning of my entire account with AT&T, and a very upset girlfriend who was understandably skeptical that I was really texting her when I said I was, I had no solution in sight, and my SMS woes persisted. I ended up solving the problem on my own through trial and error.
THE PROBLEM:
When I dictate an SMS message, if I dictate the word "elipsis" it rightly interprets what I have said as "..."
However, as of today's date, Siri interprets "elipsis" an an extended ASCII version of "...", a version where the elipsis is actually one character and not three separate periods. The one character version of elipsis is not found in 7-bit ASCII.
If you try to text a character that is not 7-bit ASCII, your text message will not be received by the recipient, regardless of the recipient's carrier or phone, and you will not get a failure notice.
If you have any doubt whether Siri has interpreted "elipsis" as one character or as three, try deleting it. If the entire elipsis deletes simply by depressing delete one time, you have generated the single character (non 7-bit) elipsis, a character that cannot be texted, and which will "mysteriously" cause your text to fall into an abyss.
THE SOLUTION:
It seems that the permanent solution is that the Siri servers or the iOS needs to be reprogrammed only to respond with 7-bt ASCII characters when the user depresses the Siri button to dictate an SMS message. In the meantime, until Apple solves this probem, the user should refrain from dictating any punctuation that will cause Siri to respond with a non 7-bit ASCII character.
(Apple, I want a gift certificate for solving this problem.)

Too bad Apple will never see this post since this is a user-to-user site.

• String - 7 bit Ascii

Hi,
I am creating a call logging system with a Java app that will collect the incoming/outgoing calls from a meridian telephone system. My question is this...........
The data from the calls comes in through the COM port, if i collect this and write it to the screen its a jumbled mess, i know the problem but dont know how to implement it, i need to force the text to convert to 7 bit ascii or something like that...
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If ur sure that the data that ur getting as ascii characters, then u can store these ascii charters in an array of bytes. then u create a string passing this array to constructor, then string will contain the characters for these ascii codes.

hi,
Special Characters in the FCC:
In all strings for separators (NameA.fieldSeparator, NameA.beginSeparator, and NameA.endSeparator), you can specify non-printable ASCII characters. These characters can each be inserted individually in the strings in the form ´0xHH´ (including the quotation marks), where HH represents the character coded as a hexadecimal value. A line break can be entered using the character ´nl´ (including the quotation marks); nl stands for new line. The special character ´0´ is not a separator character.

You should use this conversion only for plain text and not for XML documents. If you want to change the encoding of an XML document, then select the File Type as Binary and apply XMLAnonymizerBean as an additional module in the Module tab page.

• Printing ASCII value of BB (HEX)

When I am trying to paste the character » (right double angle quotes) in Unix from my Notepad, it's converting to /273. The corresponding Hex value is BB and the Decimal value is 187.
My actual requirement is to have this character as the file delimiter when I export a .dat file from a database table. So, this character was put in as the delimiter after each column name. But, while copy-pasting, it's getting converted to /273.
Any idea about how to fix this? I am on Solaris (SunOS 5.10). The old server which is SunOS 5.9 is not having this issue.
Thanks,

Might try to set your locale to an 8-bit ASCII:

• 16 bit receive over rs 232

Hello All,
I am a beginner in Labview and need some assistance on the below:
I want to create an interactive console application with Labview to communicate over RS 232. The GUI should allow me to
1. Send some specific commands over RS 232. (This I guess I will be able to do if I get a base application).
2. Receive 16 bit data over RS 232 and log it to a file. (This I guess will be tricky as RS 232 is 8 bit communication standard and the application like windows Hyperterminal will interpret 16 bit data as 2 8 bit ascii characters, which I dont want)
Let me know any thoughts on how to go ahead.,
Thanks so much,
Nagaraj Hegde

go to the help in the toolbar, select Search For Labview Help. Then do a search for Unflatten From String Function. Look at the examples for this function. Remember to set the correct endian format (Google endian if you do not know what it is).
Post again if you need more help. In Labview you can do this in many ways. Some prefer to just use the type cast function.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

• Question on ascii characters and bytes

Is there a difference between an 8 bit ascii character and a byte.
I need to display characters to an LCD display - the chip on the display will accept 8 bit ascii characters, but I need to send them to the serial port in a byte array, does this mean they are not in 8 bit ascii format when they reach the chip on the display.
If they are different is it possible to send the ascii characters to the serial port as actual ascii characters.
Cheers David

you should be just able to create a byte array, fill the array with downcasted char's and then it off to the serial port via the outputstream.
byte[] tmp = new byte[2];
tmp[0] = (byte)'H';
tmp[1] = (byte)'I';
os = serailport.getOutputStream();
os.write(tmp);
(i think that's it)
an ascii character is just a particular representation of a byte string. it doesnt really mean anything. so you could rewrite the above using the hex/decimal values from the ascii char set.
a winn

• A bit off topic but you have been so brilliant here before!!:))

Trying to get to a quick answer and without going into lots of detail on Network Infrastructure etc etc I am helping a charity and they have just put in a couple of new lasers so .......what might be the reason for an HP Laserjet P1505N (networked) printing a standard MS Word text document as garbage characters (mainly extended ascii)? BUT if the text is formatted to a colour however (I've been using dark red!) it prints correctly.
Graphics (bitmaps) print OK
USB (direct PC to printer connection works fine)
So in other words down the network colour text or graphics is OK but normal black text documents are not.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated, I assume some kind of driver mix up but because of the strange workaround I thought the exact cause might ring some bells with someone (seems like a bit or a byte has lost the plot somewhere along the line (127..256 7,8 bits ascii tables etc etc)). I'm no network expert and I stopped using PC's at home about 7 months ago..........(after 20 years of very educational WAR!!!)
Thanks for any help....rob

Hi Somil,
I've just had this same error message, and it was because I had a bogus character in my JSP sources. I'd cut-and-pasted the text from a Word document, and it included the "registered trademark" sign (an R in a circle) as a single character. This worked in my test environment, but not in my production environment (where presumably the default encoding is different). I replaced the character with the equivalent HTML entity ® (ie. the five characters & r e g ; ) and it all worked.
Have a look through the offending JSPs and see whether you have any characters that might be incompatible with your default encoding (anything that isn't plain old 7-bit ASCII is potentially a problem). Change them to HTML entities and you should be fine.
Hope this helps,

--durgaHi. The driver is putting that there to ensure that if your parameter is a
true-16-bit character that the DBMS doesn't corrupt it.
If your string data are guaranteed to be simple English 7-bit ASCII
characters, there's a driver property you can add to the pool connection
properties that will tell the driver not to put the "N'" prefix. This is
an important performance benefit because the "N'" will stop the DBMS from
using varchar indexes in searches.
If you are using the weblogic mssqlserver driver, add the useVarChars=true
property. If you are using the MS free driver or the DataDirect driver,
add a property sendStringParametersAsUnicode=false.

How to obtain this lines but of another TrueType Font?
Thanks a lot for your help.

The PFB files are printer font binary files and they contain a mixture of 7-bit ascii and 8-bit binary characters.
Read the Adobe Type 1 Font Format version 1.1 book (especially Chapter 2: Font Program Organization on page 11).
I wrote an application in "C" that reads .PFB files and makes .PS files that are used to insert into PostScript jobs. Whether it is easy or not depends on your level of proficiency in "C" or whatever language you use.

Thanks again for your help!

Hello Stacy,

> SELECT * FROM DBA_OBJECTS WHERE OBJECT_NAME = '/BIC/SZTERR_CD ';
If the object does not exists on the source target database, please check if the ddic of sap still contains the table definition. (SE11 or SE14)
If yes you can set the status of the table /BIC/SZTERR_CD to "ok" in the corresponding task file.
You can not fix this problem in other way after you have started the conversion, because of the export files are already generated (with the information of the sap ddic)...
> I completed the preconversion steps, then ran the SMIGR_CREATE_DDL program before proceeding to the export phase. Is this right or does it not matter?
That was the right way.
