DS6 in a zone on a Sun Cluster

I have a sun cluster that I am trying to configure and I don't know if I am trying to do something wrong, so I thought I would ask.
I am using Sun Cluster 3.2 on a pair of Sun T2000s with a Fiber Channel disk array attached to both nodes. I have configured the disk array to have two file systems. One for each server. I have configured two resource groups in the global zone and setup a HAStoragePlus resource for each file system. I am successfully able to fail the file systems between the two nodes. On each of the file systems I have installed a zone. The zone is managed with the resource type provided by the SUNWsczone package to start and stop the zone. The resource is in the same resource group has the HAStoragePlus resource.
At this point I have created resource group for the zone to manage the directory server. After creating the resource group I am trying to create a resource for the directory service HA service. When I use the clresource command it complains that the resource group does not contain a logical hostname. When using the services provided by the SUNWsczone package I created a logical hostname that is being assigned to the zone in question. Is there a way to install the Directory Server HA resource into the resource group for the zone?

Philippe,
DS 6 Sun Cluster Agent was not tested with SC 3.2 in Zones.
Zone support came with SC 3.2, and DS 6 Cluster Agent was built with SC 3.1, tested with SC 3.1 and 3.2 in the Global zone.

Ludovic.

  • Failover Zones / Containers with Sun Cluster Geographic Edition and AVS

    Hi everyone,
Is the following solution supported/certified by Oracle/Sun? I did find some docs saying it is but cannot find concrete technical information yet...
    * Two sites with a 2-node cluster in each site
    * 2x Failover containers/zones that are part of the two protection groups (1x group for SAP, other group for 3rd party application)
    * Sun Cluster 3.2 and Geographic Edition 3.2 with Availability Suite for SYNC/ASYNC replication over TCP/IP between the two sites
The Zones and their application need to be able to failover between the two sites.
    Thanks!

    Fritz,
Obviously, my colleagues and I, in the Geo Cluster group build and test Geo clusters all the time :-)
We have certainly built and tested Oracle (non-RAC) configurations on AVS. One issue you do have, unfortunately, is that of zones plus AVS (see my Blueprint for more details http://wikis.sun.com/display/BluePrints/Using+Solaris+Cluster+and+Sun+Cluster+Geographic+Edition). Consequently, you can't built the configuration you described. The alternative is to sacrifice zones for now and wait for the fixes to RG affinities (no idea on the schedule for this feature) or find another way to do this - probably hand crafted.
If you follow the OHAC pages (http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/ha-clusters/) and look at the endorsed projects you'll see that there is a Script Based Plug-in on the way (for OHACGE) that I'm writing. So, if you are interested in playing with OHACGE source or the SCXGE binaries, you might see that appear at some point. Of course, these aren't supported solutions though.

  • Sun Cluster 3.2, Zones, HA-Oracle, & FSS

I have a customer who wants to deploy a cluster utilizing Solaris 10 Zones. With creating the resource groups with the following: nodeA:zoneA, nodeB:zoneA, the Oracle resource group will be contained in the respective zone.
First create the Zone after the Sun Cluster software has been installed?
When installing Oracle, the binaries and such should reside in the Zone or in the global zone?
When configuring FSS, should this be done after the resources have been configured?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

The Oracle biaries are not big at all, ther is not much IO happening at this fs, you can easily create a ufs file system for each zone, mount that via lofs mounts into the zone. Or you can create a zpool for the binaries. My personal take would be to include them in the root path of the zones an you are set.
You must install the binaries in all zones where your Oracle database can fail over to. To reduce the maintenance work in the case of upgrades I would limit the binary installation to the zones in the nodelist of your oracle resource group. If you install the binaries on all nodes/zones of the cluster you have more work when it comes to an upgrade.
    Kind Regards

  • Sun Cluster and DS6 within zones

It is possible to configure the sun cluster agent for cluster 3.1/ 3.2 in a DS6.0 zone?
    It's supported?
    thank you.

Sun Cluster 3.1 u4 does support Zones for failover but as a blackbox ie failover of the complete zone.
I am not sure this will interact well with DS 6 Cluster Agent.
DS 6.0 has it's own Agent (SUNW.ds6ldap delivered in the SUNWldap-directory-ha package).
This package is available with JavaES 5 as part of the Cluster Agents bundle.
Now with regards to the documentation of the DS cluster agent and its use, unfortunately the only documentation is what I posted on my blog early March : <http://blogs.sun.com/Ludo/entry/directory_server_6_ha_with>

  • How to install a SUN cluster in a non-global zone?

How do I install a SUN cluster in a non-global zone? If it is the same as installing SUN Cluster in the global zone, then how do I access the cdrom from a non-global zone to the global zone?
Please point me to some docs or urls if there are any. Thanks in advance!

You don't really install the cluster software on zones. You have to set up a zone cluster once you have configured the Global Zone cluster (or in other words, clustered the physical systems + OS).

  • DS6 in Sun cluster

    Hi
I am doing DS 5.2 migrate to DS6.1. I have DS5.2 and messaging server 6.2 in cluster environment. I am OK with migration process but how to replace existing ldap resource in cluster with the new setting. My messaging resource is dependent on ldap (5.2) resource. I would like to add new ldap resource in cluster and link messaging resource to new ldap while keeping my old ldap resource offline. Can any body guide me what to do and how?
    Thanks in advance

I believe you need to make a new Resource group for DS 6. Once it is up and running, it should be easy to change the MS dependency to the new RG.
I am not familiar enough with Sun Cluster dependencies (and I don't have a cluster running now) to give you the exact details. But it seems like just changing the name of the Resource Group MS depends on.

  • Heading 1:  Sun Cluster with Zones using IP type=exclusive

    Dear Forums Members,
I am trying to install a Sun Cluster with Clustered Zones that the IP type=exclusive.
This does not seem possible as the IPMP does not work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The network interface should NOT be a legacy one.
    To Check run the following
dladm show-link the interface should not be legacy type
Also when zonecfg add net just set the physical attribute, set the address inside the zone when it is up.

  • Deploy HA Zones with Sun Cluster

    Hi
I have 2 physical Sol 10 Servers with a storedge array for the shared storage.
I have installed Sun Cluster 3.3 on both nodes and sorted the quorum and shared drive using a zfs file system for a mount point
Next i have installed a non global zone on 1 node using the zone path on the shared filesystem
When i switch the shared file system the zone is not instaalled on the 2nd node.
So when i try to install the zone on the 2nd node
i get a Rootpath is already mounted on this filesystem
Does anyone know how to setup a Sun Cluster with HA Zones please.

The option to forcibly attach a zone got added to zoneadm with a Solarus 10 Update release. With that option the procedure to configure and install a zone for HA Container use can be:
The assumption is there is already a RG configured with a HASP resource managing the zpool for the zone rootpath:
    a) Swithch the RG online on node A
    b) Configure (zonecfg) and install (zoneadm) the zone on node A on shared storage
    c) boot the zone and go through interactive sysidcfg within "zlogic -C zonename"
    d) Switch the RG hosting the HASP resource for the pool to node B
    e) Configure (zonecfg) the zone on node B.
    f) "Install" the zone by forcibly attaching it: zoneadm -z <zonename> attach -F
The user can then test if the zone boots on node B, halt it and proceed with the sczbt resource registration as described within http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18728_01/html/821-2677/index.html.

  • Sun Cluster + meta set shared disks -

Guys, I am looking for some instructions that most sun administrators would mostly know i believe.
I am trying to create some cluster resource groups and resources etc., but before that i am creating the file systems that is going to be used by two nodes in the sun cluster 3.2. we use SVM.
I have some drives that i plan to use for this specific cluster resource group that is yet to be created.
i know i have to create a metaset since thats how other resource groups in my environment are setup already so i will go with the same concept.
    # metaset -s TESTNAME
Set name = TESTNAME, Set number = 5
    Host Owner
    server1
    server2
    Mediator Host(s) Aliases
    server1
    server2
    # metaset -s TESTNAME -a /dev/did/dsk/d15
metaset: server1: TESTNAME: drive d15 is not common with host server2
    # scdidadm -L | grep d6
    6 server1:/dev/rdsk/c10t6005076307FFC4520000000000004133d0 /dev/did/rdsk/d6
    6 server2:/dev/rdsk/c10t6005076307FFC4520000000000004133d0 /dev/did/rdsk/d6
    # scdidadm -L | grep d15
    15 server1:/dev/rdsk/c10t6005076307FFC4520000000000004121d0 /dev/did/rdsk/d15
Do you see what i am trying to say ? If i want to add d6 in the metaset it will go through fine, but not for d15 since it shows only against one node as you see from the scdidadm output above.
Please Let me know how i share the drive d15 same as d6 with the other node too. thanks much for your help.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. You got me wrong. I am not asking you to be liable for the changes you recommend since i know thats not reasonable while asking for help. I am aware this is not a support site but a forum to exchange information that people already are aware of.
We have a support contract but that is only for the sun hardware and those support folks are somewhat ok when it comes to the Solaris and setup but not that experts. I will certainly seek their help when needed and thats my last option. Since i thought this problem that i see is possibly something trivial i quickly posted a question in this forum.
We do have a test environment but that do not have two nodes but a 1 node with zone clusters. hence i dont get to see this similar problem in the test environment and also the "cldev populate" would be of no use as well to me if i try it in the test environment i think since we dont have two nodes.
I will check the logs as you suggested and will get back if i find something. If you have any other thoughts feel free to let me know ( dont bother about the risks since i know i can take care of that ).

Normally you use AVS to replicate data from one Solaris Cluster to another. Can you just clarify whether you are replicating to another cluster or trying to do it between a single cluster's nodes? If it is the latter, then this is not something that Sun officially support (IIRC) - rather it is something that has been developed in the open source community. As such it will not be documented in the Sun main SC documentation set. Furthermore, support and or questions for it should be directed to the author of the module.

  • Configuration of LUN's to Sun Cluster

    Hi,
    I have a 2 node Sun Cluster (V3.2) running on 2xE2900, Solaris 10...
Basically, there are 3 installed Databases running on the development environment and I need to cluster all 3 in the Global Zone do some failovers and then engage Sun PS to come on site and configure the production cluster environment...
Usually I have already configured metasets or ZFS and then the DBA installs the DB while everything is nice and neat, my question however is what is the best way to cluster the LUN's when they already have data which I cannot (or would prefer not) to loose.
I believe the creation of LUN's in a metaset will destroy the data and obviously zfs pools will also destroy any data... hopefully this is a simple question from an SC novice :)
    Thanks...

Thanks Tim, that answer the question... one more though :)
I was advised to install a single node cluster then add the 2nd node to the config later. Ive done this but when I try to do the add it seems I have a problem with the cluster interconnects and receive the messages:-
Adding cable to the cluster configuration ... failed
scrconf: Failed to add cluster transport cable - does not exist
scinstall: Failed to update cluster configuration ("-m endpoint=<server>:ce3,endpoint=switch1")
The heartbeats are ce3 and ce7 which I know are working ok, ive tried everything from the 1st node but when I enter:-
    # scstat -W
Nothing is shown, although when I do a scconf -p I can see the node transport adapters ok... so how do I let the 2nd node access to the cluster interconnects, ive tried clsetup and adding the interconnects via option4 and I remember configuring them during installation...
Again any input would be greatly received...
    Thanks...

  • Migrate Sun Cluster (+RACdisks to new hardware running Sun Cluster ( + RAC)

    Hello,
We have old hardware (v490s) running Sun Cluster 3.2 + Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4.0 connected to SAN. We need to move to T4. Oracle advised against including new hardware into existing cluster, so we are planning on building a new cluster with T4's, same software (Solaris 10, Sun Cluster 3.2, RAC 10.2.0.4.0).
When ready, we plan to shut down existing cluster, zone new cluster to existing disks and bring up everything on new hardware (simply stated).
    Will it work?
Any gotchas - like need to clear disk ids or Sun Cluster panicking? RAC panicking? Any reference docs out there?
    Thanks
    user12961096

Do we absolutely need that in our new setup or could we forgo that additional layer? Would Sun Cluster give us anything that the OS + RAC doesn't give us?Yes, Oracle Solaris Cluster does make things a lot easier. It looks after your device space and gives you consistent DID devices for CRS/RAC. It gives you the choice to use sQFS, raw metasets, or ASM. It has clprivnet which is a lot easier and performs better than an IPMP solution. The node failure detection time is <= 10 seconds which is quicker than CRS on it's own and it uses SCSI fencing instead of a STONITH approach. Finally, you have all the off the shelf agents that Solaris Cluster offers.
However, if you are only doing RAC and you just want ASM and you don't need the last few seconds of failure detection that OSC gives you and you think STONITH is good enough for your fencing purposes, then CRS on its own is perfect. There are many, many deployments both with and without OSC, it's not a simple yes/no answer.
Having worked for the Solaris Cluster group, I'm still slightly bias to including it rather than going without. Others have the alternate view! :-)
    Hope that helps,
    Tim

  • Apply one non-kernel Solaris10 patch at Sun Cluster ***Beginner Question***

    Dear Sir/Madam,
Our two Solaris 10 servers are running Sun Cluster 3.3. One server "cluster-1" has one online running zone "classical". Another server
"cluster-2" has two online running zones, namely "romantic" and "modern". We are tying to install a regular non-kernel patch #145200-03 at cluster-1 LIVE which doesn't have prerequisite and no need to reboot afterwards. Our goal is to install this patch at the global zone,
three local zones, i.e., classical, romantic and modern at both cluster servers, cluster-1 and cluster02.
Unfortunately, when we began our patching at cluster-1, it could patch the running zone "classical" but we were getting the following errors which prevent it from continuing with patching at zones, i.e., "romantic" and "modern" which are running on cluster-2. And when we try to patch cluster-2, we are getting similiar patching error about failing to boot non-global zone "classical" which is in cluster-1.
Any idea how I could resolve this ? Do we have to shut down the cluster in order to apply this patch ? I would prefer to apply this
patch with the Sun Cluster running. If not, what's the preferred way to apply simple non-reboot patch at all the zones at both nodes in the Sun Cluster ?
Like to hear from folks who have experience in dealing with patching in Sun Cluster.

    Hi Hartmut,
I kind of got the idea. Just want to make sure. The zones 'romantic' and 'modern' show "installed" as the current status at cluster-1. These 2 zones are in fact running and online at cluster-2. So I will issue your commands below at cluster-2 to detach these zones to "configured" status :
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z romantic detach
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z modern detach
Afterwards, I apply the Solaris patch at cluster-2. Then, I go to cluster-1 and apply the same Solaris patch. Once I am done patching both cluster-1 and cluster-2, I will
go back to cluster-2 and run the following commands to force these zones back to "installed" status :
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z romantic attach -f
    cluster-2 # zoneadm -z modern attach -f
CORRECT ?? Please let me know if I am wrong or if there's any step missing. Thanks much, Humphrey

  • Running a Sun Cluster on one system using containers

    Hello,

You can not install/configure a cluster just between non-global zones on the same physical node. The cluster software always needs to be installed in the global zone.
What you can do is install Solaris Cluster just on one physical node (a single-node cluster) and then you can configure native non-global zones and configure resource groups to failover between those non-global zones on the same node.
The resource group has a nodelist property, where you can configure node:zonea, node:zoneb - which will allow that RG to failover between zonea and zoneb on the same node.
A good start if your purpose is just to have a learning/development/experiment environment.
