DSL is Brutally Slow

My Verizon DSL connection has become very slow in the last several months.  FIOS is not available here so DSL for Verizon is my only option except for switching to my cable provider for internet service which I am about to do if my DSL speed cannot be consistantly improved.
I have spent hours on the phone with customer service (they are always very helpful and patient) as well as speaking with Tier 2 technicians.  I have recievled a new modem and my trunk line connection has been changed several times at wherever that takes place (somewhre in Maryland, I think).  Mys DSL is still slow and inconstistant.  Speedtest.net sometimes shows good speeds but most of the time my DL speed is 1.0 or less (a lot less msot of the time) and my UL is okay at 0.4 or 0.5. 
I have a sales job and work from home 90% of the time and my wife works from home about 20% of the time.  We need good speeds or our company VPN's become unusable. 
I do not want to change ISP's but I'm at the end of my rope with my DSLservice.  Please help if you can.

  • DSL connection gets slower than dial up at night

    For the last week my DSL connection has been getting really slow in the late afternoon and evening. It is fine in the morning. Also in the evening I have started getting error messages such as Request Timeout, The connection was reset while the page was loading, and Can't find DNS server. Verizon has tried to blame my laptop, but the same thing happens with my two desktops and my wife's desktop. Verizon has also tried to blame my Belkin router, which I took out of the equation by hooking the DSL modem directly to my laptop. The modem is a Westell 6100G.
    Could there be too much traffic through the CO in the afternoon and evening that is affecting my connection?

    NDT Test is not showing packet loss yet the line sounds like it's behaving like there is a ton of loss occurring. I'll see if I can get someone. It's hard to say how Verizon has things set up but if 1Mbps is the top speed in your area and the sync rate was set that low deliberately rather than by some sort of provisioning accident, I wonder if your DSLAM is fed by bonded T1 lines. Not too uncommon to find that still to this day where DSLAMs are not fed by Fiber especially in very rural areas.

  • DSL Connection Very slow ONLY when using wireless router

    My DSL connection was running super slow (approx 136 Kbs) - I disconnected the Linksys wireless router and plugged by DSL modem directly into the computer.  Then my internet speed increased to 1.4 Mbs (a 10 fold increase).
    Any suggestions on how / why my speed drops so extensively when using the Linksys wireless routher (wrt45g).

    Are you using the same test each time to measure the speed?
    The reason I ask is that Windows usually reports its download speed in KB/sec (Kilobytes per second).  But most web (internet) speed tests report their speed in Mbps (Megabits per second.)
    A 1.4 Mbps line will typically pass data at about 140KB/sec.
    To help determine what kind of problem you are having, do the same speed test in 3 different ways:
    1)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  Connect one computer, by wire, directly to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    3)  Connect one computer, wirelessly, to your router  (all other computers and network devices should be off).
    Report back your results, and also, please state what line speed you are paying for.  Once we have this, we will hopefully be able to help you. 

  • High speed DSL is very slow

    Hi I am barely getting dailup speeds (Verizon speed tests 74k download and 14k upload) on my HS DSL. I've put up with slow speeds for a while but I just can not put up with it any longer. If things do not improve soon I will be forced to go to cable. Youtube is unwatchable, downloads take forever.  I am using a westell 327 modem.  Any ideas on how to get the promised bandwidth would be apprecated.

    Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
    Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
    Which means
    Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:
    a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over [b]Troubleshooting[/b], go to [b]DSL[/b], and choose [b]Transceiver Statistics[/b]. Copy and paste the information on that page.
    b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to [b]System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics[/b]. Copy and paste the information on that page.
    c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.
    d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:
    admin/password

  • Long time DSL connection now slow

    I've had Verizon DSL for several years (maybe 7 years?). I've always seen a consistent 1.5MB download speed (down was whatever .3 I guess?). Speedtest.net consistently confirmed this. Again, FOR SEVEN YEARS! This was the speed I was promised when I signed up - I recall reading it in the paper work and being happy I was getting something better than 768!
    Lately, this isn't the case. At best, speedtest.net gives me .85/.30 (but usually I'm getting .6 download). The slow-down is pretty noticable in day-to-day access. Verizon.net has some type of speed test I stumbled across - I got in the .3's for both up and down.
    I have my original Westell 2200 DSL modem hooked into a standard WRT54G Linksys wireless router. I recall I had to manually switch into the Westell into bridge mode for this setup to work. (bridge-mode wasn't required on my old router for whatever reason, but I switched to the linksys ~2.5 years ago, so it's nothing new).
    I took my router out of the loop and hooked my laptop direclt to the DSL modem.  Since I was in bridge mode I configured Windows 7 to connect via PPPoE which worked (surprisingly). However I saw no real speed increase. 
    After some fiddling (static IP address and a direct wired connection to a laptop) I dug this out of the modem (sorry for the bad formatting):

    Your statistics are better, mainly the margins though the margin will more than likely sag down to it's original margins of 16dB while connected in your home. On sync inside of your home, you should see the margins reach the same levels.
    It might be worthwhile to see if you can get a Verizon tech to detail the copper network to you. Have him see if he knows what the wire gauge is, and if the copper could use some repairs to improve the DSL a bit.

  • IMac G5 - 5 Meg DSL connection is slow to connect

    My IMac is slow to connect on my DSL. I have no router in line and have disabled the firewall. It's wierd I'll type in a site and I may have to refresh or just wait before I connect to a site. If I go and check my bandwidth it says speed greater than 4.5 meg... It's like once it start transmitting it screams but to connect it can take over a minute sometimes... Sprint came out to troubleshoot and the connection works fine on his PC laptop... I have also tried the connection on my IBook with the same problem. The IBook works fine at any other location. I'm thinking the Mac's don't like the DSL connection... Any Sugestions? Anyone?

    Without a router, at least you know that it is not a lossy router causing issues.
    It sounds like a DNS issue to me. My ISP has slow DNS servers and I found out on DSLReports.com that 4.2.2.x where "X" is any number from 1 to 6 give very good lookups. I put in those numbers and my page loads improved greatly.

  • DSL connection is SLOW

    Connecting to the internet or sites there in - has become EXTREMELY slow in the past 7-10 days. My ISP says their equipment is fine. Q-West checked my lines and speed etc. & all is fine. The Q-West Tech knows little about the Mac. He thinks I've built up too many cookies. How do I get rid of them? I actually had better connection speed before I got DSL and DSL was working fine for 6 months - now this SLOW connection.

    Don't worry - Its only easy if you know the answer!
    When you have launched Safari...
    Click on where it says Safari in the top menu bar. A drop down menu will appear. Scroll down that menu until you see - Preferences, click on the word and another box will ( should ) appear on the screen. There will be a padlock shaped icon at the top of that box.... Click on the padlock. In the new box that appears there will be a window that says " Show Cookies " ( Without the quotes )
    That is where you can clear cookies from.
    NOTE - You will need to remember or write down before you delete them all. your passwords and log in names to all the web sites you visit.

  • DSL is being slow during peak hours

    I've upgraded my plan to the 7.1mb and during peak hours I've been experiencing slow dsl speeds from around 7pm-12am. My speeds fluctuates between 2-3mb download speed, while the upload speed is unaffected. During morning, and afternoon my speed is solid at 6.5mb download. I never had this issue when I was on my old 3mb plan.
    I have called verizon tech support, but that was pointless and waste of time. Wasted one hour on the phone, with the lvl 1 tech who was trying to put the blame on my computer. Anyways here is my stats, and speed test. I have 7500 modem.
    This is 100%, congestion on the server during peak, can someone please help resolve this issue so they move me to non congested server. Thank you.

  • Why this DSL service so slow

    We just got the basic DSL service, and I was suprise how slow Verizon is.
    A small few megabites file takes a year to download.
    Verizon siads this is a high speed service, when and where ?
    Not here for sure, someone should take Verizon to Court for lie to the customers.

    Log into the Westell at http://192.168.1.1/ from any PC and then do the following, based on what you see.
    1: If you see a Red and Black Verizon page with a bunch of information on it, click on the System Monitoring at the top navigation and then choose Advanced Monitors on the Left hand side Navigation. Press Yes past the prompt if any appears, and then choose Trasceiver Statistics.
    2: If you see a Blue and White Westell page, select Troubleshooting, DSL, and then choose DSL/Transceiver Statistics.
    Provide the Information you see there by copying and pasting it. It will contain information such as Attenuation, Margin, Power Level, and show the modem speed.
    Should you be asked for a login, try the following:
    admin/password
    admin/password1
    admin/admin
    admin/admin1
    Your Verizon Username and Password
    The information I'm asking for here will let users who help on this board see how your line is running. If the physical loop is OK, they will have to check into other things. In the past, Verizon tech support agents used to ask for this information over the phone to verify how a line was operating, even though they could probably pull it up from the equipment on their end. Lately it seems that many of the agents no longer ask for this information for whatever reason (either they cannot see it, or are not trained to do so) but it's often a great place to start when slow speeds and disconnects are occurring.
    #3 If you can't log-in to the router, please post and we will go from there to try to figure out what is going on....

  • Windows brutally slow on my iMac (Bootcamp)

    Hey guys,
    first of all I would like to say sry, if my english isn't propper enough and lacks sometimes. I'm from germany...but anyway, here's my problem. ;-)
    I have an 21,5 inch iMac mid 2011 with an intel i5, 4gb memory, AMD Radeon HD 6750 512 mb and a 500 GB Harddrive ( NOT SSD!! ).
    All in all my iMac is working well with Mavericks on it but since last year I'm still trying to get windows work properly on it, but it just doesn't.
    I tried different ways of installing windows on it. Through the normal BootCamp process, through a USB install method and also with a way, to install windows with VMware. It's a bit tricky cause you first start installing windows through the virtual machine, though it gets installed on a partition as a windows partition, just like bootcamp. But no matter what I tried, my windows is just slow, specially on the startup.
    My last way to install it was this: I reinstalled mavericks, comepltley clean install. Updated mavericks, started bootcamp and went through the normal installation process. The bootcamp support software gets downloaded, a partition gets created and then it restarts to boot from CD to install windows then. In this case it is windows 8.1, but i tried it with 8 and also with 7 and it makes no difference. The installation process works well, without any problems. The drivers from the current bootcamp support software mostly gets installed automaitcally when windows starts the first time, if not, is just start the steup exe from within the support software. So far so good.
    Now I finally will come to my problem...:D
    Windows just runs slow like sh**. The boot process until i can log into my account works well, I have for example not the problem with the blinking cursor at the windows boot, like lot of people had. I'm within 23 seconds or so at the login window but then it's just horrible. When I type in my password it takes like 12 seconds to get me to the desktop and once Im on it, it takes 20-30 seconds more to get windows running so that I can open an internet browser. For example Skype, which I have in my autostart, takes at least 20 seconds to open and that's just not normal. I tried a lot, believe me....I tried disabling all the autostart programs, though I dont wanna disable them in general, cause I need a few in the autostart, but it didnt make a difference anyway. Even when I enable the automatic login that I dont have to type in my password, it makes no difference. Windows takes just years to get ready once Im on the desktop.
    And again, all the drivers are up to date, I installed them from the newest bootcamp support software and even checked manually if updates are avaible.
    To me it just seems that something is going wrong with the driver load at the beginning of windows. My hard drive istn broken as well, cause mavericks is running without any problems and also i checked the drive with many tools for problems. Yes, I defragmanted my drive under windows and I actually did everything you find on the interent. But still, it just makes no difference. I know that windows is propably not so fast at the start up but what I see isnt normal. I saw many macs on youtube with bootcamp windows on its and windows was running completley normal on it.
    I mean, its not normal that it takes me up to 1 minute from the moment i type in my password, to get a browser open and google the internet. Oh and before I forget it, when I have a anti virus software installed and takes even longer...when i disable all anti virus malware else what programs, it gets a bit quicker, but i guess the problem sitll exist. Also I dont log into my windows with an internet microsoft account, its an offline sign in. Just saying that cause a lot of people on the internet say that the internet login can be slow someitmes.
    So I have no more ideas what to do but I'm pretty sure there is a problem, it's not normal that it takes that long. I recently took a look into some boot log file on windows, dont know exactly what it was but there were many startup items which were causing problems and a slow startup proces. For example the "windows driver module" with the error code 101 took 9 seconds to load. But I have no clue about that boot analyze stuff, so I cant say more about that.
    EDIT: One important note I should make, is, that after it takes that long to work properly, it runs pretty fast and nromal then. Its not that slow the whole time! It's just the start proces or better the login process, what I am talking about. Once the "years" are over whene I log into windows, it runs well then. Thats why I think something with the drivers isnt working properly. Also, in the moment when it takes that long, my hard drive is 100% in use when i look into the task manager...

    Well...I have already checked msconfig and the automatic startup items. I have looked for all the non-microsoft things and disabled them, to see if it makes a difference. But it makes no difference. Disabling microsoft things in the msconfig isn't really what I wanna do, cause I have no clue about these system files.
    I have also checked a boot analyze section to see if, and what causes trouble at the start. There were a couple of things which slowed down my start process. One thing that seemed to causes a lot trouble was a file called "windows driver installer module" or something like that. But its a system file, I cant simply delete it or something.
    And before you say now: check for the newest drivers...I have the up to date drivers from the bootcamp support software and also checked manually for maybe an update. But it is as up to date as it gets. If it isn't a "bootcamp" issue, what is it then? I would agree with you that it isn't a bootcmap issue, cause bootcamp pretty much does nothing except downloading the support software and making a useless fat32 partition to boot off from...well if you have the usb install optoin, bootcamp does a bit more for you. But anyway... Whatever the problem is, it can't be solved be reinstalling windows or something like that. I reinstalled it many times, windows 7, 8 or 8.1. I fromated the whole system with mavericks to start it over then again, but there are still these problems. 14 seconds waiting when I type in my password, 30-40 seconds more once im on the desktop, until I can open a browser. The strange thing is, after that time, everything works well and windows is running fast..
    You said, that almost have the same imac as me. So how exactly did you install windows? Was it like: You started bootcamp downloaded the support software on a usb drive, made a partition and booted off from an install ddvd to install windows?
    Cause thats what I did, which is exactly the way it should be....Did you install windows only on a partition on your main hard drive or on a second hard drive?

  • Brutally slow, spinning beach ball all the time

    In the last few months my Intel iMac has slowed to a crawl, making it virtually unusable. The simplest task (opening a new window, dragging a folder, scrolling up or down in Safari) results in the spinning beach ball, often for minutes on end.
    I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions, dragged the Fonts and Preferences files from my user Library to the desktop and restarted, and done an Archive and Install, with no improvement. I have 4GB of RAM and at least 10GB of free disk space. Activity Monitor doesn't snow any obvious problems, but often showed the balky programs in red with a "(not responding)" next to each.
    Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I have now resorted to using my wife's laptop as my computer is essentially useless.

    With 4GB you should not be paging to disk, but it would not hurt to monitor pageout information. You can do this with *Activity Monitor*, top via Terminal, or if you have installed Xcode, the *vm_stat 60* command from a Terminal session.
    What you are looking for is very high pageout activity. But again, with 4GB of memory that should not be an issue, unless you like to run some really memory intensive programs.
    After I upgraded to Leopard, I had some slowness that I did not understand. It turned out that when running Tiger, I had a licensed copy of *Little Snitch* installed. However, I did not upgrade Little Snitch to a Leopard compatible version, when I installed Leopard. My problem turned out to be that I had NOT uninstalled the Tiger version of Little Snitch, and as a result its Tiger compatible bits were causing me slow downs when running Leopard.
    I actually put up with this for awhile, until I decide to do some house cleaning on System PrefPanes I was no longer really using. That is when I accidentially discovered that my performance came back after getting rid of the Tiger version of Little Snitch.
    That was my experience. And I did not really get Beachballs, but I did notice the slowness.
    I am suggesting that maybe you have something installed on your system that is not on your Wife's system which is affecting your performance.

  • Brutally slow internet

    Nearly 2 weeks ago my internet started running VERY slow. Speed checker gave me a download speed of 0.1mbps. I phoned BT support and after an hour of changing ADSL filters and wiring the hub via ethernet I was that there was a issue and I'd be getting a call back. I received the call back and was told that my connection was being restarted at their end and I was in a 10 day stabilisation period. No change in performance has occured and 8 days after that my fault was reclassified as 'closed'. Again I phoned up and repeated step 1 and have been told to expect a follow up call tomorrow, but I'm not very happy with the idea that I'm going to get told the same and be another 10 days with a minimal service.
    Anyone on here have any suggestions?

  • Speed through WRT54G is brutally slow

    When I connect my laptop directly to my cable modem (no router), I get blazing fast speed (500 kbps).
    When I connect my laptop through my NEW Linksys WRT54G v6 router, the speed drops to about 20-40 kbps. This applies to both wireless (WAN) and wired (LAN) connections.
    What is causing this dramatic drop in speed?

    Regarding the "hybernation" problem.  Let's hold off on fixing that until we can get your Internet connection working at full speed.  In the meantime, turn off "hybernation".   There is a dirty little secret in the computer world -- on many computers, hybernation does not work correctly.  It causes all kinds of problems because, when a computer comes out of hybernation, often devices are not properly reinitialized.
    The first problem that has to be fixed is getting full Internet speed on a computer that is wired to the router.
    I am unable to locate the user guide on your cable modem.  If you could post a link to the user guide for the DCM345, I would appreciate it.
    I am confused by what you said about the 192.168.1.5  address.  Where did you set this address?  in the router?  in the computer?  Where exactly?
    Do the following procedure:
    Go to "Network Connections", right click on your ethernet card (sometimes listed as Local Area Connection) and select "Properties" .   Make sure "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" has a check mark in the box.  Highlight this option, then click on the "Properties" button.   This will open a window labeled "Internet Protocol  (TCP/IP) ...".    In this window, (is this where you set 192.168.1.5 ?)  be sure it is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and also set to "Obtain DNS server address automatically".  No other boxes should be selected or filled in on this window.  If you see an "Apply" button, click on it. Then click on "OK" til all windows are closed.  DO NOT close the windows by clicking on the X unless there is no other choice. 
    Repeat the above procedure, only this time, in "Network Connections", start by right clicking on your wireless adapter, and select "Properties".  (Note:  I am assumeing that you are using a built in wireless card.  If the card is not built in, you may have to go to the wireless card driver or management software to check these settings.)
    Power down your entire system, wait 1 minute, then start it up again.  Test your Internet connection, using a computer that is connected, by wire, to the router.  Are you getting full Internet speed now?
    If you still have the same problem (i.e.  you get a very slow Internet connection), then your next step is to reset the router to factory defaults.  The router should work with your system when it is set to factory defaults.
    Use the following protocol to reset your router to factory defaults: 
    1)  Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2)  Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4)  Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5)  Power down the router.
    6)  Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8)  Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9)  Try to ping the router.  To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.  A black DOS box will appear.  Enter the following:  "ping 192.168.1.1"  (no quotes), and hit the Enter key.  You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out."   If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10)  Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1.  This will take you to your router's login page.  Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin"  (with no quotes).   This will take you to your router setup page.  Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen).  Exit your browser.
    If you get this far without problems, power down your entire system and unplug it from the wall.  Connect the ethernet port of your modem to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.  Power up the modem and allow it to fully boot (1-5 minutes).  Power up the WRT54G and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).  Power up your computer (make sure the wireless card is off).  Now test your Internet connection speed.  It should be working.  If you still have a problem with slow speed, power down the entire system, wait one minute, then power up and try one more time.  Report back with your results.
    If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
    If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt.  In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware.  After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
    If you have problems, report back the results of steps 9 and 10.  Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.

  • MBA is brutally slow..

    I bought this MBA so i could travel and work on my photos and create some home movies. I made it through making a photo album on iPhoto with it only crashing twice. The good thing is that it must have been auto-saving, so it was just annoying. So I got on a train today to london and didnt have internet so I decided to play with iDVD. I recorded a one-minute video of my son using iSight before i left on my trip and used that with a 7.0 iDVD theme and whenever it went into preview mode and/or play mode it was like I was watching video on an a computer from the 486 25mhz days, it was horrible. I have noticed some slowness sometimes but figured maybe I was impatient but even when I start up Safari and it goes to the default apple page takes more than 15 seconds to fully load. I have been on a few networks since i bought this laptop and no matter the network it takes the same to load. So, am I expecting too much from this $1799 laptop? I mean it shouldnt be this slow with a 1.8 duo processor???

    the BA is definitely slower than the other Apple notebooks. I am however surprised at how fast it does many tasks. Of course, rendering DVD previews don't run fast on my iMac either, so they might on a new Mac Pro.
    The MacBook Air was not designed as a video editing or DVD authoring device with the 1.6/1.8 CPU and especially with the slow hd. So, you might really expect too much from it. I would love to test iDVD to see if it behaves the same for me, but I have not installed it...
    Overall, it does work well for many tasks, for example compiling source code (that is what mine has to do) is as fast as first generation MacBook Pros. safari is way faster than my iMac (CoreDuo)...

  • DSL is incredibly slow all of the sudden (Alexandria VA)

    For the last few days my DSL has been at around .4 MB when I should in theory be capable of getting ten times that. In fact I usually get around 2.5 MB but that is at least tolerable. .4 MB is definitely not. I tried tech support by phone and by live chat and ran into clueless people who tell me things like turning my modem off and on. As if. So I figured I would post here as a final measure before chucking it and going to cable.
    I am fairly certain this is a Verizon problem and not something in my house since I have not changed anything in my setup that might have brought on the DSL slowdown. 

    Its been more than 48 hours and this issue still exists in Western Massachusetts. Once the connection is finally established it works well. No changes in my house. It could be the last verizon tech ran the wire right over the eave of my house (against my advice) and maybe the insulation has worn through but thats still a Verizon problem.
