Dual g5 Strange behaviour: since 10.4.4 fans come on then it sleeps!

a couple of times over past 24hrs the fans have started up along with red glow from lights just behind grill on front of box, Activity Monitor doesn't show much going on..... next minute, right in the middle of working on stuff, the comp goes to sleep! So i wake it up with space bar and all seems to be OK. HBowever last night, same thing happened again only comp crashed completely.
Only change to system recently is 10.4.4 which i updated via SU after running cron scripts and repairing permissions. Previously to this my fans rarely came on even while running intensive photoshop work.
Logs show some sort of dump which i'll post now.

Strange behaviour since installing iTunes 7.1.1 upgrade, (my iBook that is)

Since installing iTunes 7.1.1 update only a few days ago strange things are happening.
1. Incorrect disc and track names
I insert a music CD, the usual question comes up: do you wish to import this CD into your iTunes library? I click on yes and wait a second the CD title and tracks are all wrong. usually it is something I imported a short while ago but once it came up with a disc title I must have imported like 6 months ago
Yes I remembered to check the box for automatic gracenotes access but still this error comes up. If unknown disc, and track 1, track2 etc came up that would make logical sense, but I never saw this before.
If I then click on Access gracenotes assuming the data is available it comes up correct.
2. Failure to recognise disc already imported
If I take out the disc and insert again the one I just imported, up comes the question again "do I wish to import?" I thought iTunes was smarter than that.
3. Plying audio affects slide bar action adversely
While checking through sound files in a Finder window, I play an aiff or MP3 file from the Quicktime style control bar displayed there, while the audio is playing the blue bubble at the bottom of the window does not move smoothly when I try to move left or right.
Note:
I've been trying to organise my music library onto a remote hard drive to free up hard drive space. I did this by copying the folders out of the default iTunes music folder into another iTunes music folder on the hard drive such that all the other related folders are present in the main iTunes folder. Could this move be the source of my problems?

Here is the latest on the iTunes problem.
Focussing on iTunes issues only, (I think there are some system issues which I will try to resolve in the appropriate forum).
1. About 6 months ago my hard disc was so full of music fies I moved most of my iTunes music folder content to DVDs for later transfer to an external HD drive.
2. Now I have a small portable HD onto which I have copied all iTunes music folder content into one place. I created a new folder called 'iTunes music' and within Finder I moved the files and re arranged and re-named some of the subfolders to make better sense of the library structure. Incidentally some of the folders seemed to have got locked, and marked as owned by the system? I don't understand how this happened.
3. When I run the iTunes 7 application it finds the new music folder but only a fraction of its true content is displayed as playlists in the left hand column.
4. Thinking that the application would create its own (updated) ' iTunes library' file if it did not find one in the iTunes folder when launching, I moved the existing one to another folder, but the same incomplete list appears!!
So the question is please,
how do I get the application to construct a new and complete iTunes library file?
Have I really screwed things up?
There does not seem to be any reference to this kind of problem in the help files.

Strange Finder behaviour since installing Mountain Lion

I've been experiencing some strange finder behaviour since updating to Mountain Lion. Folders take several seconds to open after clicking on them (and sometimes won't open at all) and files cannot be moved around the desktop or dragged on to an app. However, it is possible to open a file by clicking on it. I've tried re-booting with Snow Leopard and everything seems OK, but as soon as I go back to ML, the problem starts again.

Library is a folder, not a file. There're more than one Library folders, one at the root and one for each user in your Mac. All of them are hidden, this is why you can't find them. But you can see their contents using
Finder Menu > Go > Go to Folder
And then type:
~/Library
for your Library Folder
-or-
/Library
for the root Library folder.

Strange behaviour with Slideshow placement since upgrade to 3.2 from 3.1

Hello, since I upgrade from 3.1 to 3.2, I have some strange behaviours but in particular with the placement of a slideshow on a new page. It is not displaying in the same position as I have in in Design. It is way off and going up over my menus when I look at it in Safari or Chrome. Does anyone know how to fix this or could it be a bug?

When you upgrade, only apex_030200 will be created and that will use the tablespace you specify. It does not have to be the same one used by flows_030100.

Strange behaviour on text insert into a HTML pane

Hi all,
I am trying to fix a problem on inserting a span tag into an existing html page (in an EDITABLE JEditorPane).
The behaviour:
Assuming the cells in a table (3 rows, 2 columns) are numbered from 1 to 6, with cell one being the top left most, cell 2 top right, cell 3 middle left, etc.
1. Inserting the text "" in cell 4 causes during any attempt to later type into cell 5 the characters to be appended instead into cell 4, directly after the close span tag.
2. The insertion in the first place behaves strange. If I have the caret positioned for cell 5 so that I can insert there
(via the function void javax.swing.text.html.HTMLEditorKit.insertHTML(HTML Document doc, int offset, String html, int popDepth, int pushDepth, Tag insertTag) )
even though the caret position is visible in cell 5, the insertion seems to take place in cell 4.
I can sort of compensate for this by adding 1 to the offset. However, then when inserting into a line of text, for example, "the quick red fox jumped over the lazy dog"
I insert directly before the 'j' in 'jumped', the insertion looks like this "the quick red fox j..umped over the lazy dog"
So that is no solution.
IMPORTANT! Just to prove it is not the span tag causing the trouble, if this span tag already exists in a cell on 'Load' of the html file, the strange behaviour is not observed.
Something is going wrong here. It is me? Or is it a bug?

Please test like this:
1. run application (the html should be loaded into the pane)
2. the span tag is programmed to automatically insert at cell 4 (by using the +1 method on the insert)
3. another span tag was already existing in the html file, at cell 8
4. Attempt to type into cell 5
result: the text appears instead at cell 4
5. Type into cell 9
result: the text correctly is entered into cell 9
See the difference!!

Well, I know nothing about HTML in JEditorPanes. I have never been able to figure out how insertions work.
My comment was a warning to others. Some people (like me) avoid answering posting of this type for reasons given in the JavaRanch link. Others will answer anyway. Other might first check the other site to see if they are wasting there time, but they can only do that if a link was posted with the original question.
The only suggestion I have is to repost the question, (since this posting is now completely off topic) making sure to then respond to this posting stating that a fresh question has been asked so you don't get a discussion going on in two places.

Strange behaviour when placing text frame on top of image

Hi,
Win XP, FM 8.04
I have a front cover that consists of a TIF image that bleeds off the page. On top of that image I want to put a text frame with the book title.
The strange thing is that when I create the text frame and use the toolbar buttons to nudge it down on the page, the text (but not the frame) suddenly jumps to a totally different place way down on the page, despite only nudging it, say, 10 mm.
Any ideas why this is happening?

Partly solved:
After some tests, it seems FM does not like when you try to move a text frame over a transparent area in an image. The image in question was made by importing a PDF into Photoshop, then saving as TIF. Since the PDF contained an area that was had full transparency in InDesign (i.e. "Paper"), that area was also in the TIF image.
The strange behaviour starts exactly at the border where the transparency starts. In non-transparent areas, there is no problem.
Seems like a bug.

Nokia C3-01 -strange behaviour/ problems with Noki...

When I was choosing my new mobile, I had two options : Samsung Wave 533 and Nokia C3-01. After a lot of hesitance I decided to pick up Nokia, believing to its high quality despite its poor media potential. However, now I think that it was a bad idea.
      Firstly, I have never thought that Touch and Type won't have ability to adjust brightness of the screen (AWFUL IN THE NIGHT), set up more then one alarm and use many of JAVA applications. When I tried to install some applications, it said- out of memory. Out of memory?! My old SE K770i could much more! What annoys me the most is that I can't use my e-mail account via Nokia Mail. When I press the icon of it , there is an error Null pointer exception and applications shuts. Other strange behaviour- while I was typing sms , suddenly there was hard, long vibration, screen went white and mobile restarted. Other users of C3-01, check this: go to messages, then other messages , then direct , start typing and try to go back to menu- screen turns white, mobile restarts (I'm polish , so names may be a little bit different) . How on earth, can mobile restart so often?.
    , Secondly,the funniest one- Ovi shop. Important thing in every Nokia. Guess what- I can't use it! When I to launch the apllication and try to go to the shop, there is information that it's not avaible for my phone. I used it a week ago and worked properly.
      All in all, I hope that Nokia will share an update of software to this model. I am just so disappointed. What I am sure about that next mobile will not be from finnish enterprise.

I have C3-01 Since 4 Months Now and I havent Had a Single Complain about my device even though I am a Rough Handler and Using the Mobile Upto its Extend.
You Have 2 options, Try To Fix your Device at Home By :
Soft reset your Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type you need to press *#7780# and then Dial. The security code is 12345. Once you complete this, your phone will come back to factory settings, but you will not loose personal data. Anyway it is recommended to make a backup before performing any of the mentioned procedures.
To hard reset your Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type you just have to press *#7370# and press Dial. The phone will request the security code that is by default 12345. Please be aware that you will loose all the data in your phone, so you should backup all relevant information.
If Problem still persist then Connect to PC Suite/Ovi Suite and Reinstall the Firmware.
BUT U NEED YOUR DEVICE TO BE UPDATED TO ITS LATEST FIRMWARE = v06.05
If still not fixed then, REPLACE YOUR DEVICE ASAP, because as given by Nokia, C3-01 Device Works according to its Specification as Specified.

Strange behaviour when using connection pooling with proxy authentication

I have developed an ASP.NET 1.1 Web application that uses ODP.NET 9.2.0.4 accessing Oracle Database 8i (which is to be upgraded to 10g in the coming months). I have enabled connection pooling and implemented proxy authentication.
I am observing a strange behaviour in the live environment. If two users (User 1 and User 2) are executing SQL statements at the same time (concurrent threads in IIS), the following is occurring:
* User 1 opens a new connection, executes a SELECT statement, and closes this connection. The audit log, which uses the USER function, shows User 1 executed this statement.
* User 2 opens the same connection (before it is released to the connection pool?), excutes an INSERT statement, and closes this connection. The audit log shows User 1, not User 2, executed this statement.
Is this a known issue when using connection pooling with proxy authentication? I appreciate your help.

I tried to reproduce your complaint, but was unable to. I didnt use auditting however, just a series of "select user from dual" with proxy authentication. You might want to see if you can put together a small complete testcase for this and open a sr with support.

Strange behaviour whit custom JTextField and JToolTip

I'm using NetBeans 6.1 on WinXP and JDK 1.6.0_07, I have a custom JTextField with regex validation: when you type something that don't mach regex it shows a JToolTip. This JToolTip should disappear when the text typed is finally correct, or when the textfield loses focus (see code below).

I have many of them in a form, and when the first tooltip appears (on the first textfield I type in) it never disappears, while nex textfields work just fine.It seems the first tooltip appearing can't be overwritten or something similar. If I use this same component on any other NetBeans project, everithing works without issues.
I have some other custom components working the same way (JComboBox, JXDatePicker), and they had this "not disappearing tooltip" issue since I changed this

Queue with callback function - strange behaviour when using max_retries

I hope someone can tell me what is wrong or can explain the following strange behaviour to me.
I am using one queue with a registered callback function. To test the behavoiur in case of an error I tested different settings, with or without explicit exception queue and with or without parameter max_retries.
Database Version is 11.2.0.2.   Enterprise Edition
I enqueue 10 messages in a loop.
I define no exception queue and do not set max_retries
==> all messages stay in the queuetable with q_name = AQ$_... (implicit exception queue) and retry_count = 5
I define no exception queue and set max_retries = 4
==> 1 message stays in the queuetable with q_name = AQ$_... (implicit exception queue) and retry_count = 4
       9 messages stay in the queuetable with q_name = nomal queue name and retry_count = 0
I define an exception queue and set max_retries = 4
==> 1 message is transfered to the Exception Queuetable with retry_count = 4
       9 messages stay in the normal Queuetable and retry_count = 0
I define an exception queue and do not set max_retries
==> all 10 messages are transferred to the Exception Queuetable with retry_count = 5
I have no explanation for the behaviour in case 2 and case 3.

Curious performance behaviour since 1.5.3 udpate

I've noticed a curious behaviour since the 1.5.3 update. Let me start by stating that performance is MUCH better using the Loupe - in fact so much so that I'm rediscovering it as genuine workflow tool. Like wise, image scrolling at full zoom is, well, smooth. It's a whole new application - although I haven't conclussively tested slider performance.
However, there is one strange behaviour. Everything is working much smoother EXCEPT if I invoke Shadows and Highlights and make an adjustment. Then performance plumets back to it's prior, almost unusable state.
I'd love for someone to try and confirm this:
Open a large RAW file (mine are 13 Megapixels) - and then go into full screen.
Invoke the Loupe and move it around.
Hit "z" and then using the space bar and mouse button, scroll the image.
Make a mental note of the performance (in my case, they are buttery smooth since the update).
Now - bring up the HUD and use the Highlights & Shadows to make an adjustment.
Return to the Loupe / Scrolling test, and see if things have slowed down markedly (in my case, horribly).
The phenomena does not appear to occur using other adjustments - such as exposure and levels.
It is an obvious and repeatable issue since the update. On the other hand, adjustments and viewing are immenslely improved, so things do appear to be heading in the right direction.

I noticed the same problem on my machine. When I turn on Shadow and Highlights adjustments, scroll and loupe are noticeably slower. Aperture is pretty weird. It was and is full of strange performance issues. I used to think this was intrinsic to the use of Core Image (needs a powerful graphic card, etc…), but many now seem programming issues. If the improvements continue (and with more powerful Core Image in Leopard?), I may make the switch from Lightroom…

Strange Behaviour P35 NEO2 Memory Throughput

Just Found something really odd. I have my MSI NEO2 FR jumpered to the 333 strap rather than the 266 it comes out of the box. There is no setting in the Bios to choose this so you have to change the jumpers. This gave me a big boost in memory performance (from 6500MB/s range to 8600MB/s range)so if you have one of these boards I suggest you do this!
The strange behaviour is that if I boot with FSB of 480 FSB pushing my memory at 1200Mhz and then down clock to 470 FSB using MSI's Dual Core Center with mem at 1175Mhz, I get Sandra XII SP1 memory throughput at 8735. If I boot with FSB of 470 I get Sandra XII SP1 memory throughput at 8550. This is using Memset with the same settings in both modes. This doesn't make any sense to me. I know it is only a 2% difference but a performance gain with the same settings and just a different way of getting there seems quite strange!
Anybody got any ideas why this would be?

Strange behaviour of Calendar Objects

Hello folks, you may not believe it but I had a really strange behaviour in my Calendar Objects:
I have 2 GregorianCalendar Objects, one instantiated by getInstance() for holding a reference for today and a second a user can pick which may or may not lie in the past. With some of my date fields it is allowed to have a past date, with others it is not, that is why I hold the reference for today.
Then, for getting to know if the picked date is in the past I set the hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds to 0 before comparing because I was just interested in the day not the time.
And now comes what I cannot comprehend nor what I was able to fix:
In the morning hours of the day I programmed this worked great. I gave it to our testers, and some days later I got it back on my desk, it would not work. I tested again in the morning, and it workd. I was confused, let it lay around a few days and tested again, this time in the afternoon. And it worked not ... now I was really confused. Just I had no time to fix it asap and put it aside for the next morning ... when it worked again ... ???
So I started deep debugging ... and since I already got an idea it could have something to do with the daytime I worked on it in the evening.
The debugging told me that the milliseconds of the 2 Calendar objects had exactly the same time and date, just different milliseconds in the evening and in the afternoon, but not in the morning. I cannot understand why, maybe one of you?
I solved it by kicking the millisecond compare and compared year, month and day, so now it works. But it still confuses me why the milliseconds could have differed at all and why not in the morning but just in the afternoon and evening (both Objects are of the same time zone, I checked this, too).

Okay, go to the API documentation and read about what the constant Calendar.HOUR means. Look just below it for another constant called Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY and consider whether you should be using that instead.

Strange behaviour of a JSlider in a menu

I am currently developping an applet which draws a graph (with JUNG libraries) and allows modifications on this graph by actions on swing components. Among these components there was a JSlider which was working well and filtering the graph. As the actions panel took too much place in the window, I chose to create a menu that allows the same actions but via menu items. I have not encountered any problem until I have seeked a way to integrate the JSlider into the new menu. To do that I created a JSliderMenuItem class :

Even tough the graph is finally correctly filtered, it seems like the JSlider in the menu has lost its "slide/drag" abilities, and it's not very comfortable to use.
Does anybody have an idea about this strange behaviour?

Strange Behaviour after re-installing the OS

Hi people.
Basically, i've been experiencing some strange behaviour with Safari since re-installing my OS. I'm running Safari 3.0.4, and i'm on a G4 iBook running 10.4.11.
Firstly, it's not remembering passwords and user names to a few sites. My homepage is set to a Auto Forum i use daily. Now, when putting your password in you can check a little box that says 'Automatically log me in each time i visit'. I tick the box, when Safari ask's if i want the password to remembered i say yes. log-in as normal. If i then go away from the page and come back to it without quitting Safari, it's asking me to log in again. It remembers my password details etc, but doesn't perform the auto login like it used to. I've reset Safari, cleared Cookies, Cache etc, but to no avail. It's becoming quite annoying!
Secondly-the scroll bar on the right side of the screen keeps disappearing-and when it does, i can't manually scroll down the pages with the arrow keys either. Any thoughts? If manually moving from site to site, it's ok-it's when i access my bookmarks page and the scrollbar disappears, that it seems to remove it for good. I then have to quit Safari and re-launch it. But then i'm back to square one! If i need the favourites, i'm stuffed!
Any help appreciated...

Thanks for the reply! I've started to download the update, got Pacifist already so it's just a case of the download finishing. I'm a bit worried though, i ran disk utility earlier and it came up with 2 errors, one of which couldn't be repaired. I hope it's not the HD on it's way out and causing problems as the new HD isn't even a year old yet...
I get a bold red message when using Disk Utility, which reads:
"Invalid Leaf record count
(Should be 2 instead of 46)
1 Volume could not be repaired"
I guess i'll give the Safari thing a go, then go for Disk Utility as per the other thread. Don't really want to wipe the HD and do another install-only done one 2 weeks ago!
