Duplicate a layer together with its effects

Hi,
When I am duplicating a layer by layerRef.duplicate(newDoc) it is copied without its assigned layer effects.
How is it possible to duplicate layers together with its effects?
Or ideally how could I manage to duplicate the layer together with all associated settings like transparency, effects, blendMode, etc.?

It cant be done . You have to write a z pogram to update the data in the new dbtable.

Is it possible to make a layer selection include its blending effects?

For creating masks I'll often select all visible pixels in a layer (cmd+click the layer) but if the layer has any blending effects, e.g. a stroke or drop shadow, then this won't be included in the selection. Is it possible to include these in the selection?

A non-destructive method would be converting the layer(s) with blending effects, layer effects, etc. to a smart object. Then <CMD>-Click to select the entire thing.
The contents remains editable.
edit: it would be nice though, if we could do the same thing with a layer group. Group all your layers in a layer group, and when you <CMD>-click on that group, it selects the combined content. That's how it works in Photoline - very handy. I just tried in PH CS6, and it doesn't work that way. Perhaps in CC, or a future version?

How to synchronize a graphic on one layer with an effect on another

Hi. I'd like to use the bulge effect on my main layer to create distortions in the underlying graphic. I'd also like to synchronize this with the image of a magnifying glass or other lens so that when I mover the lens around, the main image distorts / bulges beneath it. Not sure if I should place the magnifying glass on its own layer (or the same layer as the main image). Also not sure how to go about parenting an effect (like bulge) to an object / image (like a magnifying glass).

As to the Search function, I usually do try to search first because I understand these forums are pretty much run by volunteers who are giving freely of their time and expertise. That said, I rarely find what I need. Probably has to do with how the info is indexed, plus my overall lack of familiarity with After Effects at this point. For instance, I just tried putting in "linking a layer to an effect on another layer" or something like that. That pulled up a list of 20 or so items. There were a couple of links to Expressions, and that probably would have tipped me off to the right answer.
Anyway, I appreciate the link you provided, and I'll try to work on my searches.

Here's the short-cut solution:
Green Apple tracks are MIDI files (so to speak). If you drag one from the loop browser (Capitol C Orchestral hit, as you mentioned in this exable) directly into the arrange page it creates the MIDI file and the instrument to play it back on.
HOWEVER.If you create and audio track first, THEN drag the green Apple loop onto that track, the loop will get "bounced" with the reverb in tact and you'll have the exact sound that you heard in the preview.
Make sense?

I was using adjustment layers for color correcting and now my adjustment layer is just staying white and I've looked at so many forums and i can't find what I'm doing wrong...
I reset my preferences, I made a new project I'm clueless.

Masking a Solid Layer with an Effect

Should be easy, you would think.
I have a solid layer (white) with a radio waves effect applied to it. I've got the effect dialed in and it's what I want, but I want to mask off just a triangular portion of this layer, creating a beam shape (not eminating in 360 degrees.)
But my mask has no effect on the effect, if you know what I mean. I've tried inverting the mask and changing the mask modes but nothing works.
Isn't there a way of masking a shape layer with an effect on it?

Precompose or nest.
Apply the triangular masking to the nest.
Think of it this way, your'e making a movie of the radio wave effect then importing the movie and applying a mask to the movie.
You can also set Radio Waves to use closed but custom shapes as the emission source but that's often more trouble than simply masking a nested pr precomposed sequence.

How do you duplicate a layer and then change its adjustment layer?

This used to be easy in PS7, but it's evasive in CS4. We occasionally need to duplicate a layer and then change the adjustment layer. For instance, we might have selected a section of an image and used brightness contrast and then need to create a new layer using the same section using selective color. What we have done in the past is duplicate the layer and then change the adjustment layer. Any ideas?

Illustrator Script: How can I duplicate a layer ( with sublayers ) with javascript code ?

I want to duplicate a layer structure, as the "Duplicate Layer" submenu do with Javascript code, but I can't.
I can duplicate only PageItems or selected object, but no Layers.
Anybody knows how can I do it ?

The problem with this code is, that it can't duplicate also the sublayers, and the sublayer elements.
Sure I can write a recursive function, but I think there should exist a duplicate function somewhere ( for Photoshop script exist ! ) or a small trick, but I can't find it.

How to extend the button together with a shadow?

I had never used Photoshop. I found a nice button: http://www.psdchest.com/2011/05/09/web-elements/ and I would like to customize so that it includes the words driver or passenger. What tools I should to use and in what order to extend button together with shadow and maybe also reduce the break angle? I can now only change text. In psd file from link I mean the button from group->light->switch 1 on.

It looks good so far.
For the bevel pick (Hold Apple-Key to pick multiple layers at the same time) the follow layers and Re-Scale (Edit/transform/Scale) to give it less depth. I suggest grabbing the bottom right conner and moving up and to the left, you will see what I mean.

After you do this you will see the Underneath black layer. You need to Re-Scale this on its own to get the right effect. Its file name is: Shape 3 copy 3.

Export video with Lumetri effects - 2 to 3 videos render fine, after that flickering, colored frames

After I spent 45 minutes waiting to be transferred to to right department with the support chat, only to find out technical support isn't available during the hours I called, I am going to try this outlet to get some advice:
I have about 50 video files to export, each 20 seconds to 2 minutes long. They all have Lumetri effects on them (I suppose that's what causes the problem).
I can render 2, maybe 3 videos without problems. The next one might be fine for a while, but then all I get is strobelight frames, flickering, and different color frames. One time I even received a blue screen of death. I restart Media Encoder, add files to the queue, same thing happens. 2 - 3 will work, after that it exports garbage.
I am using Premiere Pro CC to edit the video, Media Encoder CC to export it.
The original footage is HDV 50i - 1440 px by 1080px - 1.333 pixelr ratio.
Besides some dip to black and cross transitions the only other effect is a title layer with some static color effects on it, and 2 Lumetri effects (warm midtones and dream 1).
I thought at first maybe it is because I encode in FLV, 1800 mbps, but also when I used uncomressed AVI with the same settings as the original footage the same problem occured.
I have two ATI radeon HD 6950s 1GB in my pc hooked together with cross fire, 16GB ram, the project file is on a SSD, the raw footage on a HDD. AMD Phenom II x4 processor with 3.4 GHz.
OS: Windows 7 64bit.
I did update to the latest GPU driver last night - that didnt fix the problem.
Since I noticed the fans becoming quite loud during rendering, I did put two Ice packs from the freezer on top of the case and pulled it away from the wall a little bit to allow for better cooling (and it did stay a lot cooler with the ice packs).
I do also get funky looking frames inside Adobe Premiere after trying to watch the footage with the Lumetri filter for a while. I'll have to restart the program and it'll work fine.
Any suggestions what I could do? Settings, or something? I dont want to attend to my machiene for so many hours, importing 2 video files at a time, having to review each of them for errors. I'd rather set it up once, and let them all render...

I use two Lumetri effects:
Warm Midtones
Dream 1
Both applied directly to the clip of raw footage which is in the sequence that gets exported. There is actually one sequence, where I fixed some of the footage putting it into another sequence first, then the sequence into the final sequence that gets exported.
All my clips have both Lumetri effects applied to them. The flickering took place randomly, but it would definitely get worse the more I attempted to render (the first 2 to 3 no problems, on the 3rd or 4th maybe a few flicker seconds in the middle, any more would be 100% flickering - if any flickering or only like a green solid...)
Now Shrishti from tech support insisted the problem was within the sequence. And that kind of made sense, because once we successfully rendered one sequence, there would be no more trouble rendering it a second time, even if the program was already in flicker mode. And also for some reason while we were playing around with it when one sequence failed, even after restarting Media Encoder, it would fail again afterwards.
However last night after it failed I would just try again, doing 2 at a time and it would be successful.
Now I say it failed, but of course no errors no nothing... Just as in the result didn't look the way it was supposed to.
Also I want to mention that especially when I kept it running after it failed (meaning you leave it runnning, producing only garbage) the fans of my computer kept running louder and louder. Not sure if it was the GPU or CPU. Rigth now it keeps rendering in Software mode and the fans are barely louder than under normal usage.
I use the AMD catalyst driver which I downloaded from here:

While Shrishti was trying a couple of different settings at one time the screen went dark, as it came back on there was a message coming from the windows tray, saying the display driver had crashed, but recovered. One time I also received a bluescreen message, which I will try to attach to this post.

PS CS5 Crashes whenever I try to duplicate a layer...

I have Win 7 x64
This problem just started today, but I've had CS5 installed for a few months now. Every time I try to duplicate a layer, CS5 crashes on me. This didn't happen last time I had this project open, and I haven't installed anything new, programs, plugins or otherwise...
I tried trashing the preferences on starting CS5 (alt+shift+ctrl - click to open) But that didn't do anything...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

The first thing that I would want to rule out would be the video driver, and its OpenGL capabilities.
PS interfaces closely with the video driver, and especially the OpenGL aspect. Just a simple OS update/hot-fix, can "break" the video driver. OS updates are usually transparent to most users, so things do change, but not from any direct action from the user - they go unnoticed.
Check with your video display mfgr's. Web site, and plug in your video card's model on the driver download page. Next, plug in your OS, and check the version number and date of the latest driver, against what you are currently using. If there is a newer one, download and install that.

How to save expression together with animation preset?

I am trying to understand expressions and animation presets.
I have one single slider control, which controls the opacity of a layer, where the value is the slider value + slightly changed using an expression.
I can save the slider control as an animation preset, but the expression gets lost.
Yes, this is so basic that it can be, this is the way I like to learn. And as far as I know, expressions can be saved together with animation presets. I hope someone can tell me how!

The reason that the expression is not removed when you delete the slider is that the expression is only reading the slider value, the slider doesn't know that the expression is there. There's no reverse link.
You can build more professional effects but that involves editing the xml file that tells AE what effects are applied. This still would not generate a reverse link to an expression.
Enabling or disabling an effect only changes the way things are rendered. If you have keyframes on a Lens Flair Brightness and you disable the effect the Lens Flair will not render but the keyframe values will still be available to an expression. Again, there's no reverse link. Since an expression slider does not make a change in the pixel values of a layer turning the FX switch on or off will have no effect on an expression reading the value.
The "trick" in creating an Animation Preset that uses expressions and is removed with the "effect" is removed from the Effects Control Window is to only write expressions for properties that are available in the effects used. You could do this by applying the Transform Effect, or the Levels Individual Controls Effect, or the CC Composite Effect to the layer and writing the expression there instead of placing your expression in the Layer's opacity property. Take a look at this screenshot.

Problems with Render Effects In to Out

I posed a couple questions in my last thread, but only one was answered, so I'll post my main question in its own thread. Often, when I create previews for a sequence with "Render Effects In to Out," some aspect of the sequence is changed. A couple times, when I had multiple clips playing in the same window, the frame sizes of a couple of the clips changed after rendering. The past time I did it, one of the clips started to look like it was playing in slow motion even though the speed/duration setting claimed to be at 100%. In both of these instances, the affected clips looked the way I wanted before rendering. Any idea why this is happening? This is with Premiere Pro CC, if that helps.

I'm trying to pull something together to show you, but of course, the frame size change isn't happening. The frame rate change (that's what I think it is, anyway) is happening though, but it's strange. I have a clip in one project, and before I rendered this clip, the preview looked fine, but after I rendered it, it looked like the frame rate had changed. I tried exporting, and that looked off too. I tried removing the clip, placing it back into the sequence and exporting without rendering, and it looked off. It seems like there's something going on with this project file. I opened a new project and put this same clip into it and the clip rendered and exported just fine. I didn't put any effects on this clip in the either project. I don't know if there's a way to add effects to a video track, but if that's even possible, I don't think I did that either. I can upload a small clip of what it's supposed to look like and what it looks like when I export from the first project if you think that'll help.
