Dv2500 notebook - extremely hot to touch

Running Vista, no error messages but notebook is very hot to touch within a short time after it is on.  Has anyone else experienced this and what to do about it.  This has been happening for a long time now - no significant software or hardware changes before or after first happened.  My optical drive stopped working and I think it has something to do with the heat of the notebook.  It is not the battery as same with or without battery installed.

Chevy, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you need to clean the laptop.  The guide in the link provided will help with this process.  It is a good idea to clean the laptop at least a couple of times per year.
Please let us know if this solves your problem or not.

  • Battery is extremely hot to touch

I got an 8G iphone yesterday. It went through one full charge in only 4 and 1/2 hours and is extremely hot to the touch, as in it burns my ear. Is this a defective battery I should return to the Apple store or do these batteries just run hotter?
    Clueless

Do you have any mail accounts set up? The reason I ask is that the mail application has a bug that causes it to sit in some sort of loop trying to check mail.
To see if that's your issue, go into Settings\Usage. See if your EDGE data usage is extremely high.
Next... open your mail application, then hold the home butto for 10 seconds until the phone goes back to the home screen. This should kill the mail application. Once you do that, wait 5 minutes and see if the phone has cooled down. If so, recharge it and the battery should last quite a bit longer.

  • Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro power brick extremely hot to the touch!  This affected my computer (It was hot as well) - I could smell something burning!  I am unsure the issue!

    Hello,
I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer!  When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT!  I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter!  10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down...  It's not hot to the touch but still warm!  On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help!  I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%?  It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%
    Thanks,
    Anthony
NOTE:  Any support would be great!  I could use the advice as this is personally my first MAC!  I am thinking a software update to fix the computer from heating up when sleeping but I am unsure about the power brick!

I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

  • Bottom of macbook warm or extremely hot what is the normal feel of it....

Know this discussion has been done to death but this is a variation on it. To what level of heat does the bottom of the macbook get to? Warm or does it get extremely hot causing one to have the reaction to pull the hand away when just trying to move the notebook. Not even talking about using on my lap but just the act of moving the notebook around. The hand contacts an area and the first reaction is to pull the hand away due to it being extremely hot. Is this normal under usual average load? Have yet to have it under heavy cpu load. Fully understand that there is going to be warm but just need to know if the norm is warm or is it hot to the touch as described above.
Again I fully understand that it will be warm but just need to hear from others and their experience so far with their macbooks.
From reading other users responses to the heat topic it is somewhat vague as to what the term warm means. Users have posted that it is just warm but not uncomfortable but others have stated that it is hot and uncomfortable. Just want to know if my notebook is within norm or not. Must also add that the cpu at idle is in the 140F range.

just my personal opinon here but I don't have any issues with the heat. These newer generation laptops that rival or exceed desktop speeds get hot and as one earlier post properly addressed, its a matter of physics! I really do not understand why so many people have issues with it! I place my laptop on a hard flat surface so as to allow ventilaton under the machine. If I am using it in bed, I put it on a small sofa pillow with a little tray...that helps keep it a good viewing height and dissipates the heat...Yeah it gets hot and I would not put it on my thighs after 15 minutes but other than that its a teriffic machine

  • HP Pavilion dv6 (70-28TX) Air from vent EXTREMELY HOT

Hi! I recently Purchased a new HP Pavilion DV6 70-28TX Entertainment PC. However, I have noticed that after a few hours of gaming (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), The air coming from the left side vent of the Notebook is EXTREMELY HOT. I have made sure that the Notebook is getting optimal air-flow (Using flat desk surface, not obstructing vents, etc) I was just wondering if this is normal for this Notebook? This is the only problem I have had with this PC since Purchase on Christmas Day. (Infact I have been thoroughly satisfied with it apart from this)

If it is only happening when you are playing Skyrim or similar games, it is pretty normal. While notebooks have improved in their hardware, unless they are specifically designed for gaming, they are going to generate a lot of heat. Playing a game like that makes your computer work harder than anything else you are probably throwing at it. You might try turning the graphic settings down in the game and that might help a little bit.

  • Does anyone Bravia XBR-55x850c gets extremely hot on the bottom surface of the TV?

Bottom surface of the X850c gets extremely hot to the touch. Does anyone have similar issue? Or maybe it's normal? Please let me know. Thanks

You need to take it in to Apple and let them take a look at it.  You have a short in your iPod Touch that needs to be repaired.

  • Ipad 2 wifi charger got extremely hot plugged into a/c?

I plugged my Ipad 2 into the charger then into a/c.  I was charging my Ipad when I moved the charger and it was extremely hot to the touch. I unplugged it and am charging it from my Imac. Has anyone had this problem?

There is this page for troubleshooting the iPad and iTunes on a Mac : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591
In terms of charging, have you tried a different charger and/or cable ? And you aren't currently using an iPhone or iPod charger with it - the iPad's charger is twice as powerful.
Have you tried a reset to see if it charges properly after it's restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Extremely hot while charging

The problem which i encounter with my iphone 4 is extremely hot while charging, surfing, even playing games. Is it happen to other iphones or just only mine?

I noticed this the second! I plugged2 of my sealed units in to the ac charger. And noticed these units batterys were not what they should have been.
They would also get very hot with normal use. I would use the web for 5 mins with my dad and mines and only mine would be hot to the touch.
This was with two different units. It seems some just get hotter faster and easyer. My current one dosnt

  • Extremely hot MagSafe

Since recently, every once in a while when I'm charging my MacBook, the MagSafe will get extremely hot. The little clip thing on the wire got stuck the first time it happened, and I had to break it to get it unstuck. The part that attaches to my computer gets too hot to touch so i have to quickly pull it out and let it cool down. Is there any recall or anything, this is very annoying, and it seems to happen when I'm charging wile using a bit of a draw. Any help would be very nice.

i'm having the same problem! it's to the point that i cannot charge the macbook while using it because it has actually burned my fingers when i tried to pick up the computer and accidentally touched the power adapter. i have to let the computer finish charging and cool off before i can even lift it. i tried setting it on a hard surface and it actually puffed up the paint on my desk. i dont know how hot its running but its hot enough to ruin the paint. i dont know what to do with it either. the macbook has always ran hot but recently it got much worse. i am afraid of where i leave it to charge. i dont want it to melt anything else.

  • BlackBerry Torch Getting Extremely Hot

The past few days for some unknown reason, my BB Torch has started getting extremely hot when in use, particularly when making or receiving calls. The phone then also starts to “Call Fail” when it gets so hot. The phone gets so hot it almost burns your skin if you put the phone in your pocket. If I don’t use the phone at all, it then cools down again, but as soon as I start to use it again it heats up. Also when I charge the phone it starts to charge then stops, then when you pull the charger out and plug it in again it charges again normally.
It does not get extremely hot all the time. It might work half the day normally, then all of a sudden it will just start heating up and start “dropping” the calls.
I took it in to my Service Provider today and they sending it off to Blackberry for them to look at the phone to see what is wrong. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this with their phone at all?

On device go to Options, Device, Application Management is a great way to see what your apps are doing with your CPU usage on Smartphone. Just slide top bar to CPU and see what is going on. Also touch the CPU menu to see other time variables. I found out that an app was eating away CPU cycles on mine
Disable Compression on media card? go to Options, Device, Storage
using a custom theme? try it for a day the factory default one to rule out your theme
remember the esc key closes most apps, except for GPS and some chat clients. the other apps need to use menu and then exit or close. The farthest key to the right is a home key and does not close any apps per se but will end calls.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Magsafe extremely hot?

Hi, ive owned the macbook pro retina 15" for around 6 months now and its great, but ive notice from when i first had it that the magsafe adapter gets extremely hot, i mean if i touch it for more than 1 second it burns like mad. Ive also noticed when i have it on the table or if i use it on the couch sometimes that it seems to be seems melting my leather on my couch a little bit, i do mainly have it on the floor but i like to keep it up on the couch so the dogs cant chew it as they had a tendency to chewing. So is it supposed to get extremely hot like that? thanks

Forgot to add, twice now the magsafe has gotten so hot that it turns off? i then have to wait for it to cool down and unplug it for 5-10 mins. This happened within 30 mins of each other.

  • Getting extremely HOT!

In the last week my iPhone and charger have been getting extremely HOT! The last couple nights I can't even touch the back of phone.... What is causing this?.... How do I fix it or is it not fixable? Please help

Have you tried rebooting the phone? Hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears, ignoring the "slide to power off".
Next step would be a Restore in iTunes. And if that doesn't fix it do it again and restore as a new phone.
What is happening most likely is that a background program is running continuously attempting to send or receive data. So you need to kill the program (the reboot) and if it happens again the program probably has corrupt data.

  • 990XA-GD55 990X Chipset Heatsink EXTREMELY hot.

My PC has started giving BSOD's, and when touching the heatsinks to see if anything is overheating, the 990X heatsink (the one Below the CPU) feels EXTREMELY hot, warm enough to burn a finger if held there for over a second. (65/70C ++ )
CPU is at 45C, Mainboard itself at 32C, Graphics card at 36C (Whilst playing games)
I wish I had a IR thermometer I could read the temperature with.
Is it normal for them to go super duper hot? Could this be as a result of a BIOS setting regarding C1E or Phase control?
The side of the case is open, and the PSU is sucking hot air out of the case causing circulation.
    Nothing is overclocked.
    AMD FX-4100
    MSI 990XA-GD55
    MSI 460GTX Cyclone
    Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz DDR3 (2x4GB)
    Corsair Force3 SSD
    Corsair TX650 PSU
    Creative X-Fi Platinum PCI-E
    Seagate 7200RPM SATA II (2X1TB)

I like my computer to be silent, which it is.
All the other components are fine.
If there really is an issue with inadequate airflow (which I find hard to believe) why didn't MSI fit a fan ontop of the heatsink themselves?
CPU cooler is the OEM one from AMD.
No Intake fans, No exhaust fan. (System temperature is fine)
The PSU sucks up all the warm air from the system and spits it out, which draws in fresh air into the case.
I know this setup (With this fan arrangement) is fine, I have ran it for many years without any issues.
Only part that seems to give an issue now is the 990X chipset heatsink. And only during heavy gaming for a prolonged time.
On idle I estimate it to be around 50-55C
Idle system temp is 29C. With the CPU at 40C.
The four cores (According to CPUID Hardware monitor) are at around 15C each.
SSD disk is sitting at 30C.
    GPU at 33C.
Can anyone else with this board see if theirs is the same? I rather suspect that MSI made a mistake by not fitting a cooler on it from stock.
Its also in a rather bizarre location, sandwiched right between the CPU and GFX card, with the RAM on one side and the huge heatsink to the left of the CPU on the other side.
