DVD cropped on some displays

I created a 4:3 dvd menu and the dvd plays fine on some players and computers and gets cropped on others. How do I fix this problem so its not cropped on any dvd players?

Harm is totally correct.
All CRT displays Overscan, some to a greater degree than others.
This is what causes the cropping - you will not see this on a computer display, an LCD or a Plasma screen however.

  • Watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps

hi all - i gots the following problem
watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps - or at least dulls back until i use the trackpad to wake it
i assumed that this would not be issue with front row as it would be obvious that i wanted the dvd shown full screen - any ideas?

Wow, I never found this before. I played the dvd in front row on best performance (battery setting) and the display went black. I closed front row and opened it in dvd player and it played for 15 min and never went black.
Any way I went into energy saver and adjusted custom to never turn off display then opened front row. That seems to have worked.

  • IDVD created DVD plays on some DVD players and not others, HELP!

    Hi everyone,
I just finished a huge wedding photo montage and burned it using iDVD to a standard DVD-R. I popped it into a Sony home DVD player and all went well, and looked great. Next I tried the DVD in a Mintek portable DVD player (so it's easier to take to the wedding and connect to the LCD projector) and the DVD is not recognized. I tested another computer burned DVD (from a wedding video that was burned on a PC) in the mintek and it does work. I also tested the mintek using a standard store bought DVD movie and it worked fine.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening? I've browsed through the prefs for iDVD in search of some "compatibility" options but there aren't any.
The wedding is Saturday so I'm really hoping to get this sorted out quickly.
BTW I'm using the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 (the one that came standard in the original 1GHz, 17" Powerbook)
    Thanks everyone!
    Dave-G

Your problem is the Mintek portable DVD player.
Some older DVD players will not play the newer burned media.
This is by design to force conusmers to always upgrade and update there equipment to stay a head of the technology curve.
I had the same problem with a 2 year old stand alone player wouldn't play anything I burned. It would play on other computers and on newer stand alone players but not on a 2 year old player. (VERY FRUSTRATING) I bought a new cheap stand alone and quess what , All was good it played.
There are different codes that are on these players that distingish the players capability.
    Good Luck.

Three issues here.  The pre-pending is useless when selecting songs to play, plus it.takes up much of the admittedly limited space in my on-screen menu.  Since it doesn't help me select a song to play, it simply prevents more relevant info from being displayed in that area.  However, there is a second area on the menu that is designed to list title, artist and album but those fields are blank - despite I-tunes inclusion of the info in the xferred files.
    JCP,
Regarding the tags, on an MP3 CD iTunes simply burns whatever is embedded in the MP3 file.  From your description, it sounds like the Onkyo is seeing the filenames but not the tags, which does seem strange.  You may want to try the question in an Onkyo forum.
If you don't need the pre-pended serial number, and don't care about the sequence, you can burn from iTunes as a data CD instead of an MP3 CD.

  • Crop tool now displays a Diagonal.  The "apply during import" panel has gone away!!  Any help appreciated!!

My Crop Tool now displays a Diagonal instead of a "Rule of Thirds".  I do not know why or how to correct.
Secondly, the "Apply During Import" portion of the right hand panel has disappeared.   Thus I am unable to use custom setting while importing.  I don't really know if this happened during upgrade to LR5.4 or not.
    Any help greatly appreciated!!!

You probably pressed the O key which cycles through the crop overlays when the crop tool is enabled.
Click Tools / Crop Guide Overlay in Develop to see the various choices.

  • Some DvD's work, Some don't?!

I have come across an irritating problem on a Macbook Pro 2009 model...
I am trying to watch DvD movies on it. Some DvD's work, some don't. Sometimes it just ejects the DvD automatically, sometimes it claims it's blank, and there are times when the thing actually works - for specific DvD's
I am a bit suspicious with this ordeal. I'm thinking it's the version of my operating system and there's a bug in it that causes some DvD's with certain specs to not work...
For example, the DvD for the actual Harry potter Deathly Hallows P1 movie works, but not the special features. The DvD for the movie "The Number 23" works, but not the one for the "Black Swan".
Thoughts? Broken reader? Bug that needs to be patched? or is Apple being bullies and preventing me from watching "burned" DvD's or something similar because I can't look at any dvd's with manually burned movies.

    Hi P,
Super drives are known for being picky about the discs they'll read. It's normally not what's on them, but the brand of disc, or sometimes even the speed it was burned. Do you have two of the exact same brand/model/speed of burned discs and one works while the other doesn't?

  • Lightroom 4 custom crop boundary area display

We post hundreds of sports photos at a time.  We set a custom crop 7.5x10 which most closely enables all our supported print aspect ratios (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc.).  We have to be careful that the important photo elements are NOT in the boundary area inside the crop.  I mean we need to keep space inside our standard crop so that regardless of which print size you pick that the trim (either top/bottom or sides depending on the print) will not cut of important photo elements.  It would be very helpful if we could have Lightroom 4 display this boundary area with some type of shading.  That way when we do the crop we can see if an important photo element is in the boundary area, and then we can increase the crop.  Our objective is as tight a crop as appropriate while preserving the boundary area.  A visual cue would be most helpful with this work.
I'd appreciate suggestions about how to accomplish this if it is already possible or have Adobe engineers add the visual cue for a configurable boundary area inside the crop.

I understand what you are getting at. I went into PS and created a series of shape layers at the specified ratios and then centered them. I then expanded each proportionally so that there long side was 10 inches. On a portrait oriented photo there is a portion on the left and right that cropped on a 5x7 or 4x6. I tinted the shapes and then masked out the center area. I then save this as a .png file with the intent of using it as a watermark. This worked but is an after the fact confirmation.
While in the crop tool you can press the "O" key and rotate through different crop guides. The last one is a grid. (works the same in LR3) When I had the crop aspect ratio set to 7.5 x 10 (which LR4 simplfied to 3x4) this shows for me as a 12 wide by 16 long grid. Coincidentally, the crop danger zone appears to be very close to exactly one grid in width.
I don't know if this is a "close enough" solution for you.
**** I'm glad I didn't hit send before going back and looking at LR4 again. This works on a full size image with a maximum size crop. But if you starting shrinking the crop the grid size changes. Now if Adobe could maintain the grid so it ALWAYS shows in say 10 percent increments, then your danger zone would always be the left most and right most 10 percent.

  • 16:9 DVD cropped on LCD TV

    Hi there,
This is a problem I have noticed before, but after a lot of searching, have not been able to find a solution yet.
I have put together a company showreel which consists of a few menus and 12 or so video clips. The project is all set up as 16:9 SD, with all the clips in the correct size and format. The project looks fine in preview and when formatted and viewed on a computer (in mac's DVD player or on a PC) - perfect, no cropping. However, when I play it back on a TV - in this case an LCD TV, set to 16:9, I get a small amount of cropping around all sides - I can't be sure of exact amounts but it seems to be up to around 20-30 pixels each side. Oddly, it seems to crop a couple of pixels more on the right then on the left. Even more oddly, when I set the TV to display the video at 4:3, the same amount is cropped off, so it isn't a case of the image disappearing beyond the 'tube' (I know, or I thought, this was only a problem with old tube TVs), there is actual digital cropping happening somewhere. I know the extra image is there, I can see it when I view the DVD on a computer.
Has anyone noticed the same kind of thing? How can I format my project (if indeed it is something I can fix in DVDSP) so I see the entire 16:9 image when viewed on an ordinary TV. As a director on a few of these jobs, it's kind of irritating to see little details being lost.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

    thanks for the response.
I suspect it probably had something to do with the DVD player, as you say. What puzzles me is, why this doesn't get highlighted more often. I have tried playing DVDSP discs on a number of different players, and most of them crop a good portion of the image. Is this just a fact of life? As it seems a bit crazy, sometimes the loss of image is 10-15% of the picture area! Okay, so not enough to start encroaching on title safe (but even that should be a thing of the past, right?). I'm sure DVDs you watch from big studios don't have cropped edges, or is that just because I was never so familiar with the original masters?
I thought I had it understood but it seems not. I thought that an LCD or plasma screen behaved in the same way as a computer monitor i.e. 720x576 pixels = 720x576 pixels, no loss, surely? I know traditional cathode ray tube TVs lose parts of the image around the borders, which is why we have action and title safe areas. I didn't realise the same thing applies to supposedly modern LCD TVs.
Anyone more informed on this than me?

  • Hook up a dvd player on a display

is it possible to basically use the studio display with a dvd player, without going through a computer?
Why, you might think? Because my powermac G4 is so loud that watching movies in my bedroom is becoming annoying.
I am pretty sure it is not possible, but you guys solved so many of my problems in the past that i keep hope!!!
    Thx

    It is in fact.
And according to my great grand aunt, Wanda Pilsudska
(not his daughter), we are related.
    Wow!!!
I took your email, and I will try to collect some information about him for you.
We will be in contact - I'll send you an email soon, so you will have the main.
BTW, I suppose you don't speak Polish, do you? For me would be more easy to find some "ours" information. But if you don't speak, that's OK - give me some time to prepare/collect the infos.
    Pozdrawiam,
    Marek.

  • What Resolution To Crop For Photo Display On Widescreen TV?  Please Help

    Hello,
I'm having great difficulty trying to crop my photos for display on a widescreen TV.
The resolution of the TV is 1920x1080, and when I crop to those dimensions I get the black letterbox bars on top and bottom of the screen when I display my photos on the TV.
What specific XXXX x XXXX numbers should I use when I crop in order to display my photos from edge to edge on the TV without the black letterbox bars?
Also, could you please specify the proper ratio number to enter into Lightroom for the same purpose?  Apparently Lightroom requires a ratio number as opposed to pixel numbers in the dialog box.   When I enter 16 : 9, the resulting crops display the black letterbox bars when viewed on the TV.
I've searched the net and read many discussions about pixel aspect ratios and dimensions and square pixels, etc., and I am totally confused because I should be able to achieve my goal with a 16:9 ratio, but no matter what I do I end up with the letterbox bars when displaying my photos on the widescreen TV.
    Thanks very much in advance!

You'll need to describe just how you're getting those images onto the TV I think, for people to be able to answer this reasonably.
Is the TV plugged-in to the computer's video card?  Or are you making a video that you're displaying off a DVD or similar?

  • PC DVD players that can display chapter time elapsed

I have authored some screener discs with a bunch of episodes on one timeline. I have a chapter marker at each episode. I took for granted apple dvdplayer's ability to display chapter time elapsed, which is a feature that can be found on most set top players as well. The recipients of these screener need to provide some timecodes and on their pc's they can only get the continuous timecode from 00:00:00, which really causes a headache.
Anyone know of a PC software DVDplayer that allows you to view the elapsed time of the current chapter.
    thanks,
    ryan

The time display on DVD players shows the time elapsed in a title set not individual chapters.
The standard way to do this and more accurate is to create a timecode window dub with the time code filter in FCP before exporting.

  • Intermittent weirdness on Crop used to display "before" state

    Running LR3 under Windows 7 64-bit, 12GB RAM, I'm seeing this phenomenon:
In Develop, when I display the "before" state of an image, usually the current setting of Crop is maintained -- i.e., switching between the current Develop history state and the Before state changes the values of the parametric settings, but does not change the Crop setting. This behavior is what I believe is normal, as was always the case in LR2.7.
However, from time to time, when the Before state is displayed, some Crop setting other than the current (most recent) setting is applied. In some such cases, it appears the Crop setting which had been in effect at the point in History corresponding to the Before state is used.

Further observation: When the problem appears (i.e., the current Crop setting is not being maintained when toggling to the Before state,) switching focus to a different image, then back to the image at hand, corrects the problem.

  • 4x3 format SD tape import looks ok on monitor , but, the DVD produced does not display correctly ? The format looks slightly thinner in width?

I have been archiving old Hi- 8 SD tape and when displayed on the PC monitor looks right. And looks correct on a TV Monitor.
But, the DVD when  produced  looks right on a TV monitor but, thinner when imported back as a DVD into  Adobe Premiere Pro , how can I adjust this ? I know a 1,000pixels instead of 720 would fix the issue, i have checked it in Photoshop.
I have others that need extra editing, as the previous Sequences have been removed from the computer ?

usually this is caused by pixel aspect ratio. premiere usually reads it properly, but if it doesn't you can change it to a new value. in the project bin, right click the file(s) and choose modify, interpret footage. there is an option for pixel aspect ratio, you can try some till one looks right. the 1.21 or 1.45 might do what you are looking for...

  • New DVD Drive reads some DVD's not all, why?

    Hi,
I recently replaced my old dvd/cd drive in my notebook pavillion 2945se.  It seems to work well except it only reads some store bought dvd's.   It can read Star Trek: voyager, dc movies, disney,  star wars discs, and most other store bought dvds  but doesn't read marvel movies, import movies.
All of these were readable with my old drive.  All other functions such as burning dvd/cd, and even lightscribing work.  I have updated as far as everything that I can including codecs and using microsoft "fix-it" support which actually fixed some burning issues.
My theory is that the drive is more sensitive to flawed or dirtier discs, but considering these were readable before.  Is there a fix for this?
I'm hoping that there is a fix for this since there are not many options for my laptop drive.  Currently it is:
tsst corp cd/dvdw ts-l632m ata device
    Thanks for your help.

Firmware update of DVD drive may solve your problem. But the main problem is to find the correct one. I found this by google.
However, I'm not recommend it, since I dont have real experience updating ts-l632m. I updated my DVD drive of dell notebook a while ago but using the recommended firmware from dell site.
    Pavilion DV2922TX, XP-SP3 32bit, Intel T5750 2.0Ghz, Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS with 128MB, 4GB 667 DDR2, 250GB HDD

  • Media Encoder CS4 HDV to SD DVD crop issue

System: MAC Premiere pro CS4 4.1.0
Workflow for issue: NTSC HDV 30i project sequence (editing the native .mpeg files)
When I export to media encoder from a HDV project/sequence and choose the Widescreen MPEG-2 DVD preset, the output preview shows black bars on the left and right sides of the image (image is below or opent the full size version attached).
The export setting does not allow me to change anything related to the frame size so I can't figure out how to fix it.
On a sidenote, because HDV is Upper field first and the DVD preset defaults to Lower field, a tiny black line appears at the top of the frame in output preview. When I change the DVD option to Upper, this goes away.
    Anybody else getting this issue?

Your image is still queued so I cannot see it but yes there are tiny black bars on the left and right sides of the screen.  This is probably due to some round off errors in the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio).  I think I read that Adobe made some corrections from previous versions that ended up distorting the image
