DVI to VGA or DVI to HDMI for Sony Bravia

I have a 52" Bravia HDTV that i have hooked up to my Mac Pro (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card) . I bought a DVI to VGA adapter since teh Bravia doesnt have a DVI port, but has a "PC" port. All my friends tell me to use "DVI to HDMI" better. What are the advantages? i am asking because the screen looks great with the VGA connection .I just watched several HD trailers for different movies on the Bravia and they look REALLY HD and clean. So is it really going to look even better ? or is there another advantage to using HDMI ? Thanks
a side question, when i restarted my Mac Pro that had the Bravia and the mac display hooked up , the display was blinking on startup (where it keeps flashing a light blue screen) until i restarted it again . What happened ?

The HDMI port can give sharper vertical edges, but some TVs don't work well with computers via HDMI. The only way to tell is to try it.

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.

  • DVI-to-VGA adapter disabled on HDMI-equipped monitors?

Can anyone with an Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter on a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo (both at 10.6.8, currently and probably forever) still connect to a second monitor if the monitor also has an HDMI port? I could until early 2011. From 2008 to 2010 I could connect to every VGA monitor through the DVI adapter.
I thought the DVI-out on my MBP died but got a newer MBP and it, too, doesn't work on any HDMI-equipped screens. Both computers and all my DVI-to-VGA adapters work fine on monitors without HDMI. Yes, I rebooted. No, it's not the cables. Again, all components otherwise work in other arrangements. I am not talking about any other setups. The HDMI-equipped monitors all work fine with miniDisplayPort-to-VGA plugs (today!) from newer Macs.
Any work-arounds? Anyone have a best-recommendation on an adapter that works still?

Thanks, BSteely, I have the latest QT and iTunes already. Closing the lid seems to kick the MacBook external display into some special mode that Front Row can't display videos in. For example, you get the Front Row interface, but as you select movies/TV shows, the preview window on the left side is blank. Open the cover, and have both displays going, and you can see the previews fine (and of course, you can see the movies/TV shows play fine as well when you click on them)
Running Quicktime Player full screen works fine without Front Row in either open or closed lid mode. So it is apparently something wrong with Front Row itself.

  • DVI to VGA or DVI to HDMI?

I've just purchased Sony Bravia HD tv and I have it connected it to my MBP (via DVI) to watch high def shows and movies. Right now I'm using a DVI to VGa cable, but I'd like to take advantage of the HDMI port on the tv to get a better picture. Anyone know if the difference will be noticable?

You might as well try the DVI/HDMI interface if you are unhappy with the VGA interface. You have nothing to lose by trying. It will be slightly better but I think Chris Y. is correct that the source of the pixelation you see is probably unrelated to the type of interface.
If you freeze the action, is the pixelation still present? That would for sure suggest the problem is with the source material rather than having much to do with other things that can cause pixelation.

  • What dvi to vga connector do I need for a MacBook Pro A1286?

I bought a mini DVI to VGA for my 15 inch MacbookPro (Model 1286) but the mini-DVI connector is too big. I need a connector HALF that size. Is there one I can use, find, purchase?

  • DVI to VGA and DVI to Television

I have a MacBook PRO. Below is the profile for display. I would like to connect an external monitor and I would also like to connect my computer to Television to watch movies. Both my TV's are over 4 years old and have S-Video as well as RBG (Y/pb/ Pr) / RCA. Please advise the two different kind of adapters/cables that I need to buy to make both the functions work.

Based on your video card, you have an older MBP with a DVI out.
For the external monitor, you'd need the Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter - one came as an included accessory with your MBP, but you can also purchase one from Apple, at a retail store or online using THIS LINK.
For the TVs, you'd need the Apple DVI to Video Adapter, which has both s-video and composite (single RCA-type jack with a yellow band) output. You can purchase one from Apple, at a retail store or online using THIS LINK.
Note that the DVI out is only video - for the audio, you'd need mini-stereo to RCA cable - you can find those at Radio Shack, Target, etc., or online.

  • INF monitor file for SONY Bravia HDTV (W510 DP-HDMI) for Windows 7.

    Hello everybody,
Does anybody has a INF monitor file (or driver) for SONY's Bravia television sets? Mine is KDL40-XBR2 and by default is using the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver which is pretty lousy... the text is pretty bad and the quality is worse than using the VGA port of the laptop.
I need something specific for SONY but they don's support their line of TVs... I wasn't able to find anything on the net.
    Thanks.

Of course, SONY is not providing generic INF monitor files for their line of LCDTV's... no wonder they are going down!

  • Unsupported output signal for Sony Bravia KLV-32T550A

I have a mac mini 2007 running 10.6.3. I am trying to connect to a sony bravia KLV-32T550A either through VGA or DVI. Both keep coming up with error message (unsupported output signal, adjust your pc signal)
I have updated setting on the TV as per some forums I have read so am sure its not the TV.
Now the TV says the native resolution is 1366 x 768 but there is no exact match in display settings. Could this be the problems.
I have read that i can download switchresx and this should fix the problem.
Can anyone shed any light on this it would be much appreciated>
    Thanks

Definitely the second computer can be a big help. If you set up Screen Sharing between the two so that the mini's screen is shared over to the MacBook, you will be able to see the mini's screen on the MacBook even though the display connected to the mini is dark. And from the MacBook you will even be able to control the mini, so you can go into Displays Preferences on the mini and make alternate selections for resolution and, if necessary, refresh rate. Hopefully you will hit on a combination that will light up the mini's attached display.

  • Firmware for Sony Bravia. What?

I was planning to buy a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV, 32" from Best Buy.  I was reading the reviews and a lot of owners are saying that I would need a Sony "firmware update for video/audio" that can be downloaded from Sony.  What exactly are they talking about?  I'm not too TV/computer literate, and downloading/ flashplayer firmware might not be something that I would want to tangle with.
Thanks in advance  for information about this issue.

Since alot of the new tvs have what were once computer components within them, such as mother boards, the component may be in need of updates in order for the tv to run properly. The manufacturers will create these updates in order to keep your tv running at its best. The updates are to keep your tvs operations running smoothly. There are also firmware updates for certain blu-ray disc players as well.
The updating of the firmware on the tv can be fairly simple if you have a newer computer/laptop that has an easily accessible usb port. You would check the tv manufacturer's website for any firmware updates listed under your tv model number and if you were to find an update available download it onto a flash drive and connect the flash drive to the usb port on the tv. From there you would go through a few menus in order to get the update to load onto the tv.
Manufacturer customer support can often walk you through applying the updates to the tv.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • DVI to VGA or DVI to Component?

I just purchased a new 26" LCD tv. I've notice whenever I connect anything to it via VGA (e.g: Macbook Pro, iMac, or my Xbox360) the colors are somewhat washed out, there's a great deal of pixilation, as well as poor black levels. Yet when I watch the same videos on the laptop/desktop screens...they look great. I'm secure it's not the TV, as watching movies on a dvd player look fine, as does using component cables with my Xbox. Does anyone know if I'd have better luck using a DVI to Component cable to run content from my Macs?

One would think that it would be best to use the VGA port. But logic doesn't always fit into all this stuff
You'd have to get a DVI to Component Adapter (I don't think they make a min-DVI one) and see. Only problem is you're still outputting from the same port on your Mac and that means either your TV can't handle the signal from the Mac's DVI port or your Mac can't output the signal well enough from the DVI and it's not going to help it any outputting from the same place and using a analog signal to boot.
But again. I've seen weirder things. I suppose you can try.

  • Apple TV or Sony Wifi Dongle for Sony Bravia TV??

    Hi,
I have just recently bought a Sony Bravia 40" TV.  To access the internet capabilities i need a Sony Wifi Dongle.
I already have a Macbook Pro and 2 iPhones that are used within the house on the wireless network.  Was wondering if i should get the Sony Wifi Dongle or skip that and get Apple TV which is about the same price??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Andrew

I have a similar set up.  However, before getting my ATV3, I had gotten a
ZyXEL 300 Mbps Wireless N Access Point, Ethernet Client, Universal Repeater, and Range Extender (WAP3205) to use as a wireless Ethernet bridge to my TV.  It's about 1/2 the price of the ATV, but it is only a bridge--no subscription service, etc.
Having said that, the ATV is amazing!  The only shortcoming is that it doesn't offer Hulu Plus service at this time.  The upside is that you will be able to access services through your iPhone and mirror them to your TV through your ATV--and you can get app on your iPhone.  (Lastly, you WILL eventually succumb and get the ATV.)
    Hope that helps your decision.
(BTW, I did not hook the ZyXEL directly to my Sony Bravia, but to my Sony Blu-ray player.)

  • VGA to DVI to hdmi?  For the new Mac Mini.

I'm dying to buy a new Mac Mini but I'm not ready to replace my monitor yet.  Sadly, it's a VGA flat panel.  It's connected to my current 2009 Mini by a VGA to DVI adapter.  The new Mini comes with a DVI to HDMI adapter.
Can I plug my VGA to DVI adapter into the DVI to HDMI adapter and get video for my monitor?  My monitor has no speakers, so audio is irrelevant.  I just need video.

Unfortunately, my monitor is a VGA only flatpanel.  I had to buy a $30 Thunderbolt to VGA adapter to be able to use it with my new Mini.  Ah well, problem solved.  I'll make sure my next monitor has either DVI or HDMI.
One thing I think Apple should seriously consider doing is STOPPING their practice of including an adapter in the box and, instead, giving a free adapter with purchase.  That way, they won't be wasting resources (this is the second time I've bought a Mac with an adapter I don't need, and I guarantee there are people who will already have a compatile monitor and won't need the adapter either) and instead will better serve their customers by sending them home with a new Mac that works with the monitor they have.
The Mini is all about bring your own peripherals, right?  Well, there are a lot of VGA monitors out there.

  • Mini dvi to VGA adapter to HDMI cable

i have a mini dvi to vga adapter for my macbook (bought in 2007) and that works but I want to connect to hdmi cable to this? But don't exactly know how to do this or if it is possible?

It is my understanding that 'VGA' is analog and HDMI is digital....from what I have read it won't work without a convert
I use a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI adapter to run the HDMI cable to to TV
    the converter...VGA to HDMI...

Personally I would shelf the VGA adapter and go with the new cable set up...if you already have the HDMI cable then an adapter from DVI to HDMI would be in order
