Dynamic text property

i have a dynamic text box with the name 'prodName'
in the actions layer I have set prodName.text = "something";
prodName.textColor = 0x000000
When I test it, the color code works fine, but the dynamic
text doesnt. I have tried htmlText on and off. Tried embedding and
not embedding. Cant figure out why this wont work. I have done this
before, what am I missing this time?

Well it turns out it was the embedding after all. Turning off
ALL embeded fonts fixes it. So what happens with end users who do
not have the fonts? I recall seeing some posts about that now

Linking a class to a dynamic text field to load XML data.

I'm quite new to ActionScript and would be grateful for any help here.
I want to load text into a dynamic text field (called 'about_tab') using a class depending on the language selected (by clicking on a flag icon) by the user.
I managed to get this to work when the ActionScript was written directly in the timeline, but am having problems with doing the same thing via a class.
This is my class file:

Here's one of my XML files (the other is the same except "About" is written in German):

When I run it, it returns my trace statements that the class ChangeLang and the function xmlLoaded are running, but no text appears in the dynamic text field (I should/want to see the word 'About'). I get this error message:
1120: Access of undefined property about_tab
The problem, I'm guessing, is in the part in red in my code. I think I need to target the text field in the display list by creating a reference to it. If so, could someonw point out how I do this, or perhaps a tutorial that would help. I've tried adding the word stage (i.e.,stage.about_tab.text = substance.about_lbl; ) but it still doesn't connect. I guess there's something really simple I'm missing, so I apologize if this comes across as a stupid question

I'm also new to AS3 and I've just started using external classes and I think I know what you should do to put your code to work.
Instead of using the text field you created inside your flash file, why don't you use the "TextField" class to create an instance of this object? It's the exact same thing as when you create and instantiate a new text field inside Flash.
First, import flash.text.*; (includes classes like TextField, TextFieldAutoSize, TextFormat, TextFormatAlign, etc)
Than you just have to create a var like
public var about_tab : TextField;
or
public var about_tab : TextField = new TextField();
then, to adjust the properties of this tab you use dotsyntax as if it where on your stage like:
about_tab.x = 50; about_tab.alpha = .5; etc...
you can even create a function to "config your textField"
 private function createAndConfigTextField() : void {
 about_tab = new TextField(); //you only need this line if you
 // only typed something like "public var about_tab:TextField;
 // if instead you used "public var about_tab:TextField = new TextField(); outside
 // this function, just skip this first line because you already have an instance of

Using dynamic text in Flash Builder

I'm trying to get some dynamic text to my web page. The text is readed from .txt file
I use AS script which i was using in a project I made with Flash Pro and now i try to implement it in Flash Builder project
The script look like this:

So first I made a project with Flash Catalyst and in there I created an area text element. Then I imported the project to Flash Builder and put the AS script in the <Script> section and gave the <RichText> an id="design". The text is just simple text and formatting happens in richtext element.
So, when i try to compile the FB project it give me and parse error "undefined property error req", "undefined property error loader" etc.
So should i alter the AS script for FB or is there something else wrong? I tried to google how to use dynamic text in FB but couldn't find any easytyutorials. I'm mostly a desginer so coding isn't my speciality. But thanks for help!

You can customize 'New class' generation under Preferences->Editors->Flash
Builder->FileTemplates->Action Script->New ActionScript class.
Currently there are no template variables available constructors. But you
can customize it as following,

Can I put Chinese and English characters in the same dynamic text box?

I'm translating a game into several different languages, one of which is Chinese. I've noticed that in a dynamic text box where English characters are included also, they aren't displayed when the .swf is exported. The font is embedded in the document with all characters selected. It seems like whatever language-character is first displayed in the text box, the other language cannot be. For instance, if there are Chinese characters first, then English, the English will not display, and vice-versa. Any work around on this? I am using Flash CS5 and Actionscript 2.0. Thanks!

Kglad - I'm not sure I follow your instructions for the fix. I assume you want me to set the _visible property to false via Actionscript ( textInvisible._visible = false; ). What is the purpose of this second text field - does it need any specific content in it to function? It doesn't seem to work to fix the problem but maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Compiler errors when using dynamic text in a class

I have created a MovieClip with a custom class that has a dynamic text field (called "textArea"), which I want to modify by the Component Inspector, as well as via a custom method using:
textArea.text = newText;
It works fine in all cases and there are no problems, but the compiler still wants to give me the error:
1120: Access of undefined property textArea.
The error doesn't appear when I remove the component parameters (so that it's just a normal MovieClip). It still works, even with the error, so I'm not sure why it wants to complain. Am I doing something wrong or is it just being bitchy?

By defining them in the class and using the class name under component definition:

A problem I run into is that the compiler errors prevent the parameters from being defined so I comment out every line that has to do with textArea, define the component, then uncomment them so that it'll work when it runs.

Alert using Dynamic text in BPM.

Hi,
I am using dynamic text function in alrtcatdef transaction for raising an alert using BPM.
But in the alert inbox I am not getting the an alert error message which is passed to alert catagory in control step of BPM. Can anyone please let me know what may be the possible solution of it.
I have done the below configuration:
Configuration done in Alrtcatdef transaction:
Created an alert catagory
assigned the fixed recipient
click the dynamic text button in alert catagory property.
Configuration done in BPM:
Used the Control step.
given the Alert catagory name,action and the alert error message.
Please let me know the solution soon.

I have referred the michal weblog and I have done the same step except the container operation step.
My requirement was to send the hard coded error message to the alert catagory so I didnt used the container operation step.
In the Control step I have hard coded my error message.
But still it is not showing in my alert inbox.
Can you please let me know is there any other settings needs to be done.

Dynamic Text and changing Text in AS3

I have a Dynamic Text box in my Library. I drag it to my main stage and give it a name..it is now a movieclip. The name is 'mcAdmin'. I added an event listener for MOUSE_OVER. I want the text to change color, but for now I'm just trying to change the text; however, it's not displaying the change in text I want. I do a trace, and the change is in there on the output window, but it is not displayed as such. How can I :
1) use AS3 to change the font color of the text
2) use AS3 to change the text and have it display?

give the textfield a name, if it hasn't already (sounds like you put it in a movieclip).
to change the text set the text property of your text field
like this
myTextField_txt.text = "here is the text";
or if it is inside a movieclip
myClip_mc.myTextField_txt.text = "here is the text";
To change the color you would need to put a TextFormat on it. To keep the same fontsize, font etc. you could first get the TextFormat from your existing Textfield, change the color of the TextFormat and set it on the TextField.
// get the Textformat of the first character
            var TF:TextFormat = myTextField.getTextFormat(0,1)
// set the font color
            TF.color = 0xff0000;
// put it on the whole text
            myTextField.setTextFormat(TF)

Dynamic Text keeps resetting

I have 5 dynamic text fields. They are all getting their text
property set in a function when the movie starts. I have a button
on frame 2 which makes it change to frame 3. When the frame changes
all the text fields get set back to their original value.
What am I doing wrong?
Also, are there any examples of using the SeekBar component
with Sound?

You must have a keyframe on the layer containing the text
fields... get rid
of it.

Dynamic Text Field Height (k)

I have generated a dynamic Text Field through ActionScript

Everything is working well, with one exception. I have the

color done through ActionScript. The particular font I am

ElanBook is getting cut off in the Text Field slightly.
I've tried a number of methods to get the text field taller,

dice. Is there a way to specify that the text align within a
Text Field
to the center, bottom, baseline, etc. using ActionScript?

no, but you can size your textfield using any number of
textfield properties. in particular, you should check the autoSize
property.

Printing a movie clip with dynamic text boxes

I've got a certificate inside a movie clip, and i want the
dynamic text box to dispay the user name, but for some reason it is
coming up undefined, even though i have the dynamic text box set to
finalname = _root.inputname, but it comes up as undefined on the
screen. :( Can anyone tell me where i am going wrong?
Is there a way to print just a specific movie clip on the
screen? I can only print all the frames in the movie and without
the dynamic text box... any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Dynamic Text Box Variables

Hi,
At the moment im using the variable option of a dynamic text
box to load text. The variable is loaded into the swf via an
external htm file that has multiple variables in it (i dunno if
that makes sense but you know how you can load in a set of
variables from an html like eg. down below):
Anyway, now i want to have 10 different movie clips that act
as buttons, so that when they are clicked, they change the variable
of the dynamic text box soo it loads a different section of text
from the html file. I have tried the .variable property of the text
box but still no luck. I looked at another thread else where but i
dont understand exactly how they are changing it there. I'll copy
in the link anyway just incase it helps or someone can explain what
they are doing. Can anyone help me with this??

Added dynamic text; How do I stop variable name from showing?

I am creating a simple game for kids. On the first page, I added an "input text" field for their first name. I called the variable firstname.
When they move to the next page, I used a "dyanamic text" field so I can call them by name on this page. It works. However, When I test the game, on the first page, where the firstname is input, it shows _level0.firstname instead of just a blank space for them to input their name.
I know I fixed this in the past and it was something simple, but I can't remember how to do it. I'd appreciate anyone's help!

Beginning with Flash MX (version 6), you assign the text field an instance name using the Property inspector. Although you can use the variable name method with dynamic text fields for backwards compatibility to Flash 5 and earlier versions, Macromedia doesn't recommend this, because you can't control other text field properties, or apply style sheet settings

Cannot use text:TextField with dynamic text in 3.2

Hi, I have a multi-lang app which uses English LTR and Hebrew-Arabic RTL. I am using a properties file for each language, and I get the right item using resourceManager getString. Until 3.2 I had to reverse the order of the words in each item when using Hebrew (or Arabic for that matter). In 3.2 with the new Text layout framework, this is not needed (MAJOR IMPROVEMENT) but I cannot get it to work with dynamic text only static text. of course all works great if I upgarde to flex 4.0, and use the textBox component, but I do not want to do that, so late in the development phase of the application. If you look thru the TextField class in the help documents you will find all of the properties you can manipulate. One property is the wordWrap property which will keep you text from going off the side of the textfield. Another is multiline which will allow the textfield to have more than one line. And another is the autoSize property which will make your textfield adjust to fit the amount of text loaded into it.
