Dynamic WEP Wireless Network (University) [SOLVED]

I for some reason am having the hardest time connecting to my universities wifi. It sees the network, and the signal strength is plenty, however whenever I try to connect to it...it tries and tries then just fails.
It's encrypted by Dynamic WEP with PEAP MSCHAPv2
We're supposed to put in our username and password for the university's system, but it just won't work.
I'm using NetworkManager, and it works great everywhere else...just for some reason it hates connecting to their network.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Solved my own problem...did quite a bit of reading last night and it seems like NetworkManager still has trouble connecting to these types of networks, and the only way to get it to work correctly is by using wpa_supplicant...which is what I did. Here's my wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
ssid="wtamu-student-wireless"
key_mgmt=IEEE8021X
eap=PEAP
phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
identity="username"
password="password"
Maybe this'll help somebody later on!

  • Connecting the time capsule to a wireless network (university)

    I just purchased my first mac computer, and the time capsule. I am a university student, and my housing has wireless network, so i would need to configure it to that network (which requires registration). When I first opened everything up, I could see the time capsule in the airport utility, but now I cannot. I dont really know where to go from here, because all of the manuals go from being able to detect the time capsule. On top of that how do I connect the wireless to the registration required network? Any help is much appreciated.

    how can I use the time capsule as a "wifi acceptor" to connect with my wireless network, and then boardcasting wifi signal to my devices?
    Unfortunately, this is not possible.
    In order to broadcast a wireless network with Internet access, the Time Capsule must be provided with a wired Ethernet connection at its WAN "O" port.
    Check wtih your Internet Service Provider to see if they have an adapter or other device that will provide a wired Ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.

  • How do I refresh wireless network list?

    I own a MacBook Pro and I noticed recently that when I switch on my access point AFTER booting OSX my home WEP wireless network won't show up in the network list and thus the airport does not connect. I have to switch airport off and then back on to find the network, and then all works fine.
    Is there any way to tell airport to "refresh" the network list, or is any option defining how often to check for networks in range?
    Maurizio
    Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Thanks, I believe I found the solution following your suggestion.
    Actually I did not want to choose the option you mentioned since I wanted Airport to try to connect to open network if it doesen't find a preferred one.
    However I found out that my airport option "By default join:" was set to Automatic. I believed it mean Airport tries to connect to the last network used, and thus had to connect to my home network as I wanted but, as I explainde above, it did not refresh the network list. Can't figure out why.
    Instead changing that to "Preferred networks" and using the option "Ask before joining an open network" did the trick. Now Airport finds any network in the preferred list almost instantly, and otherwise asks if I want to use an open one.

  • [SOLVED]Broadcom BCM4313 does not detect all wireless networks

    EDIT:
       I'm really sorry to the Arch forum users and to the admins for posting such easy problems which i could have fixed myself.
       To solve this what i did was to change the channel on the router and its 802.11 mode. I turned my main machine on and it was doing the same as the machine i posted here first so it was two machines and so probably not a problem of the pc but of the router.
       I don't know if this means my network cards are just bad or something else but it works now.
    Hello,
        I'm having a problem with the computer on the title. When i try connect the computer over wifi(to my own network), it doesn't "see" my network. Sees all my neighbours networks but not mine. It was working till a couple of days ago.

        I tried changing the encryption on the router from WPA&WPA2 to WEP and to WPA and i from TKIP&AES to simply AES but to no avail.
       I also tried loading different modules still related to b43(like the legacy one) and installing the firmware from AUR.
       Has this happen to anyone else?
       I'm still trying to do this on the live iso so i can try as much stuff as needed and then i can just reboot and then do just what i need:)
    thank you

    ewaller wrote:It sounds like your regulatory domain is not set correctly.   Not all channels are legal to use in all countries.  Perhaps your router had been using a channel legally, but your computer is unaware of its location, and was therefore ignoring the channel.  Also, I assume you are in the right band.  I don't know about your system, but thus ancient laptop does not work in the 5GHz band.
    Thank you for shedding some light on the subject, but actually the channels the router permits are through 2.412 to 2.472 (more less, i think that writing here 13 frequencies wont help anyone ), and what i did was look on my working laptop, the channel for the networks around the house and select on my router a channel that wouldn't be the same, but i think the router has a built in tool to do this.

  • [Solved]Unable to connect to wireless network using networkmanager

    I have just recently reinstalled Arch Linux so I could try out Gnome 3. I am using Slim for a display manager and as I said before Gnome 3 for the window manager. All of the packages are the latest versions.
    slim 1.3.4-2
    gnome-session 3.4.2-3
    consolekit 0.4.6-4
    networkmanager 0.9.4.0-6
    network-manager-applet 0.9.4.1-1
    My current issue is that when i click on the network manager applet then click on a network to connect to it nothing happens. It doesn't matter if the network is secure or not. I have followed the instructions on the wiki for slim, gnome, and networkmanager. I have been reading the forums and trying out other people's solutions. So far nothing is working.
    Sorry for the long post but I figured more information was better than not enough.

    So it does work without networkmanager.

  • [SOLVED]I can't connect to wireless networks.

    Hi all, i'm new in the world of Arch Linux but not on the Linux world.
    I'm having problems with wireless networks, and i had read all what the wiki says and tried all but nothing worked. I wanna say that wired works perfect.
    I think the problem comes from dhcpcd. Because in the begins the problem was that dhcpcd stuck on "Waiting for carrier", i read the wiki and seted the channel on auto but didnt work. Now i cant even connect to a wireless red.
    iwconfig wlp2s0 essid "Name"
    Nothing happens
    Here are some of my list-unit-files:
    $ systemctl list-unit-files
    dhcpcd.service enabled

    Yes that is what I was working toward.
    I am worried about one thing, however.  I note that you are using an Android phone as your AP.  Have you done that successfully with other machines?  The reason I ask is some carriers here in the states (*cough*Verizon*cough*) make it as difficult as possible to tether their phones.  I know that on my phone, I had to turn on NAT forwarding in the phone to make it work.  That required I root the phone.
    Yes it works perfect with anothers PCs and with this PC on Windows too. I tried on anothers Networks, D-Link Router, Micronet and others. I tried in a lot of connections but it doesn't work.
    DarkCerberus wrote:You should try it with just NetworkManager.service or just netctl.service without the @ symbol - with my knowledge - dhcpcd, netctl and NetworkManager all conflicts together, try disabling the other network services like dhcpcd, netctl, NetworkManager etc. And just use one of them and see what the end result is.
    I could't disable the following services:

    I tried with:
    - sudo systemctl disable [email protected]
    - sudo systemctl disable [email protected]

    Then, i restarted and try again with:

    i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

    Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
    Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
    Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

  • Not able to connect to wireless network using WEP 128 bit hex password

    I'm using a 128 bit hex WEP password on a Belkin wireless router.
    My ascii passphrase is 13 characters.
    I tried using the hex password generated by the Belkin router, as well as the hex equivalent of my ascii passphrase. Every time, I am told that either "there was an error connecting to the network" or the "password is incorrect" message.
    I'm using channel 7, but have also tried with channel 11.
    I tried using a $ sign in front of the WEP hex password. The $ does not work with Open Internet Connect or the Airport menubar.
    I can connect if I don't use any encryption on the wireless network, and also through the Ethernet cable.
    I have an iBook which connects fine to the wireless network.
    So why doesn't the iMac work the same way ?

    The security difference between NO encryption and any form of WEP is about 2 minutes or less for somebody looking to get in... besides having WEP enabled makes you look like an easy target since you think it'll stop anything!
    Either leave it off, making Hackers think at least 3 minutes about WHY, or use/setup WPA of one form or another!

  • IPhone not connecting to WEP 128 Wireless network after 1.0.2 upgrade

    Hello all,
    I have the iphone since the last week. I was pretty happy with it until I upgraded the iphone to version 1.0.2.
    From that very moment, the WEP Hex/ASCII Key option dissapeared when setting a connection to a wireless network. Mine was working with 1.0.0 and now it does not work.
    I am Telecom engineer, and I pretty sure everything is correct. Mi 128 wep key is 13 characters long and (of course) 26 HEX long.
    I have tried putting " before and after the ASCII key and also entering a $ sign before the HEX key.
    I have also disabled the Auto caps, just in case.
    After all this testing and a quick look at google, it seems that there are more people with the same problem.
    Could anyone say to me if there is any other way? Or if apple is gonna release a new version with this issue fixed?
    I am quite dissapointed.
    BTW: I have tried all the stuff of reseting the router and "forget setting", etc.
    BTW2: To switch to WPA may be an option in my network by it is no way a solution as the majority of the public AP use WEP....

    I am using a Linksys BEFW11S4 and I've tried to make the WEP key work on and off for the last 2 months while tapping into other people's wifi to get by without it.
    Previously, when I chose someone else's secured network from the 'available networks' list, it would open a window and ask for password. But if I selected my own secured network it wouldn't and would just say "unable to join XYZ network".
    Here is what I did tonight and I'm not sure which step did the trick, but it's worth a try:
    1 - On the router, I went into the Password tab and entered a password. Previously I hadn't been using any.
    2 - On the iPhone, I clicked on the little arrow next to my network's name. In the following screen entered the DNS address of my router (on Linksys the address is found on the Status tab).
    I now have it connected to my network. I disconnected and reconnected again without having to enter the password, so either it's saving the password someplace or it's the DNS address that did the trick. The iPhone MAC Address shows up in the DHCP Active IP Table of the router and the router is still WEP protected.
    I hope this wasn't too confusing. If you reply, please tell me how you feel about the $200 price drop today!

  • Mixture of WEP and WPA on wireless network

    I have a WRT54G and a cable modem. The router is configured to use WPA. I have many personal wireless devices (print servers, computers, access points, etc.) on my network. All are configured to use WPA. My wife and I just got company-issued laptops from our employer that have software that does not support WPA (we can't change the software). The laptops only support WEP. Is there a way to run a mixture of WEP and WPA on a wireless network? If I have to buy an additional router, that is OK. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to run both WPA and WEP over the same internet connection.
    Would MAC filtering on my current router be a possible solution?

    It is not possible to use WEP & WPA at a same time in a router .....
    But you can enable the MAC flitering on the router for all wireless devices ..... let me know if it works ....

  • Adding Airport Express to an existing Windows WEP enabled wireless network

    I have can't find anything to help me add my new Airport Express to my existing WEP network. All I want is to use to play my Itunes through the sitting room stereo. I've upgraded the firmware on my Netgear 802.11b wireless access point so I can have a 13 digit WEP password. I've installed the latest install software from the apple website for the express box.
    I can access the express box fine on its own but not add it to the existing network. Now the only thing that works is the apple connection! My old wireless network has stopped working. I tried the same at my office yesterday and the only way to resolve the situation was to uninstall all the Apple software and then my Wireless network was able to work again. I'm pulling my hair out here and getting in to trouble with the rest of the family because it is taking so much time up!
    Someone mentioned somewhere some new firmware - I can only find one for MAcs not PCs - I don't have any Macs on my network.
    Please help.
    THANKS

    Make sure you have installed at least Airport 4.1 on your PC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41forwindows.html
    Most Netgear wireless routes will tell you the hex equivalent of the plain text WEP password you enter into it - and this is found using the same web browser based process you use to configure the router. This information cannot be found by any other means (like "pinging" the router's IP address). If you can get the WEP key in this manner, configure the Airport Express with the same WEP key *while it is still cabled to the router*.
    The alternative is to come up with a 26-digit hex format WEP key of your own choosing. You can then wirelessly access the Airport Express and enter that WEP key on it first, followed by doing the same on the router second.

    Hello,
    I'm having problems with my wireless network connections, too. I did a fresh arch install with gnome3 some days ago to avoid any issues when upgrading, but i just can't access any wireless networks now. Everything else works like a charm, though. I followed the usual steps to set up my network/wifi with all the required modules and packages (broadcom-wl from the AUR, etc.) but it doesn't work like it did with gnome2 and xfce4.
    My iwconfig/ifconfig output looks like dave1022's. Don't know if this is of any help...
    The nm-applet in the gnome3 "panel" actually lists nearby wireless networks, but once I click on one of them, gnome asks me for authentification with my root password (user password does not work). I don't think it should be this way. If I enter my root password here, nothing happens whenever I click on the concerned network to connect to it. I deleted the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<SSID> file to reset the authentification process.
    I tried to consult the gnome3 pages in the wiki, but couldn't find any valueable hints either...does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong or forgotten?
    It's exactly the same for me and it's driving me nuts. I'm using iwl3945
    [EDIT]
    Well... actually installing the applet solved it for me. Is the applet actually needed for Gnome 3 or is a workaround?

  • [Solved]All wireless networks have stopped working

    Connecting to wireless networks that i have previously connected to times out, both with network manager, and iwconfig.
    I have tried on two networks i have previously connected to and both time out.
    What is interesting is that i am able to connect if i set a static ip, but i cannot reach any addresses, not even 192.168.1.1
    SOLVED:
    Issue was determined to be the ath9k module, fixed it by running:
    modprobe ath9k nohwcrypt=1

    I am tyrying to link our xbox and PC int oour wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking for my WEP Key.  Where do I find it?

    You should be able to setup WPA / WPA2 access, rather than WEP - which is old an less secure. (Unless your devices are too old for WPA??)
    Try this link: http://spotlight.getnetwise.org/wireless/wifitips/apple/apple-wpa.php
    **Edit
    Airport does support the WEP protocol.

  • Wireless network setup problems [SOLVED]

    Hi!
    I'm trying to set up the wireless network here, and have been for the last couple of days. I'm following the Arch Linux Wireless Setup guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup and I've come to the point where I should have a connection, but I don't. I can't get an IP from dhcpcd and setting it to static doesn't help me. Wired network with dhcp works fine, but I can't connect to the router on 192.168.1.1 as stated by my ISP or any other address, I shouldn't have to as the essid and key seems to work but it's suspicious.
    Be advised: This is the first time I'm in contact with wireless networking, I've been using wired since the dawn of time.
    Running Arch i686 on a Compaq CQ60 laptop
    Router is a Xavi 5258
    These are the steps I've made:

    // After installing madwifi:

    // Alright! Let's get that IP then!
    # dhcpcd wlan0
    dhcpcd: version 5.0.4 starting
    dhcpcd: wlan0: broadcasting for a lease
    dhcpcd: timed out
    // Very well then, let's set it up static style
    # ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.2
    # route add default gw 192.168.1.1
    // This results in nothing other than breaking all connections until I shut down wlan0.
    I have some thoughts:
    Is the key right? How do you know if it's wrong?
    Why can't I connect to the router on any of the standard IP:s nor the one given to me by my ISP? Hardware error?
    Is my eth0 dhcp connection in some way conflicting? I've tried the whole set up from a fresh boot with the wire disconnected.
    Have I confused something in the stage of installing and modprobing madwifi -> ath5k? Seems like the card is supported but I don't know how far into the set up process you can go with an unsupported card.
    Heh-heh, that's my post, sorry for the length of it but I don't want to leave something out that could've been useful in troubleshooting.
    Thanks in advance for any help, be it simple pointers or complete walkthroughs.
    Edit: There was something, somewhere about country codes, but it said it's probably not an issue. Could it cause any trouble? I live in Sweden.

    I solved it!
    I had to change my eth0's IP to 192.168.1.2 before I could access the modem!
    The key was not at all the one my ISP specified, it was a 10-digit number. NICE.
    After I set wlan0 up with that key dhcpcd worked flawlessly and I'm writing this post through my wireless network!
    Now, how do I mark the thread as solved?
