E-mail only account rejected by .Mac server

As an iMac member I have an additional e-mail only account [email protected] but when I try to add this account under mail preferences the following messages appear.Has anyone experienced this type of problem as I would appreciate any insights to find a solution. Is this a known problem for an Apple software update or does the problem lie with my ISP (BT).
"Trying to log into the .Mac server “mail.mac.com” has failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email."
"The .Mac server “mail.mac.com” rejected the password for user “am.jones” Please re-enter your password, or cancel."
(This message appears continuously even after I have entered the correct password)
This is an iMac account and also fails when I run the connection doctor test.

I think the problem of intermittent connections to the mail server is that it may be caused by OSX's firewall, so what I did was to go to System preferences>sharing>Firewall, I opted for a New port, I selected "other" and named it Mail and under the TCP port number I input 25 or you may input whatever you use (ssl requires a different number) or you may do several to cover all the accounts and name them mail2, mail3 etc. if you are wondering what UDP is, its the following: is a connectionless protocol that, like TCP, runs on top of IP networks. Unlike TCP/IP, UDP/IP provides very few error recovery services, offering instead a direct way to send and receive datagrams over an IP network. It's used primarily for broadcasting messages over a network, in other words if you are not sure avoid inputing a number here. So far Im trying it out for stability, I have read many articles and the solution may be as simple as this, its easy to try and non permanent, any one trying this solution please post any experiences. Thanks

When I try to send e-mail I get an error message stating that the e-mail address was rejected by the server.  When I send to e-mail from another address, I get back an error saying the e-mail address is unknown.  My e-mail has worked fine for years until yesterday.  HELP!

The specific text of the error message is very important here — I'm not sure exactly you're encountering here.
If you're able to connect to your email server and are able send email to other email addresses and if the failures are specific to one email recipient address, then please contact the intended recipient of the failing email, and confirm their address is valid.  (This is the way I'm reading your question.)
If you are unable to send any email to any other email addresses and this is specific to your email address, then try the web mail client interface (if one is available) to verify your login user and password, and check with your email ISP for assistance.  If your email password works via web mail, follow this Apple troubleshooting guide, then — if everything else fails — I'd probably then entirely remove the email account from Mail.app and re-add it per your email ISP's particular setup requirements.  (Some issue with the setup or maybe a corrupt setting in OS X or a problem at the mail ISP servers is a common problem, but this effects attempts to send to all email addresses via that account.)
An email account setup is specific to an email provider, unfortunately.   If you're using one of the more common email ISPs, then there are usually setup guides and frequently-asked questions posted online.

When I try to reply to an e-mail, I get the message that the recipents e-mail address was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying. How do I fix this?

Try this. Sometimes this is all that you need to do to fix that issue. Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • What happens to mail only accounts?

I bought 3 email only accounts along with the family pack in mobile me (when it was dot mac) long time ago
I paid for these for several years, then mobile me came in with Aliases, but my mail only accounts were tied over as legacies, and I continued paying for them in mobile me.
They are 3 [email protected] addresses, and are important to keep.
What will happen in iCloud? am I going to loose these addresses - which would have a major impact on my "digital lifestyle"
I really need to know how to keep them not figure out how to live without them!
Then also I have two email addreses/accounts as part of mobile me family pack, wife has two also, Son has one.
Does each of these accounts need migrating over to iCloud?
What if two of these are the same person on the same Mac(s)
    Advice appreciated, thanks, Graham

You mention email-only and Family Pack: these are not the same thing, but it doesn't matter as they can be treated the same.
Each account (or sub-account) can be separately migrated to iCloud at http://me.com/move and will become a full individual iCloud account complete with all the facilities (Lion 10.7.2 required) and 5GB of free space.
What if two of these are the same person on the same Mac(s)
I see no reason why this should be a problem. You will need to sign in with your main account at System Preferences>iCloud and then add any subsequent accounts, that you want to use on the same user account on your Mac, at System Preferences>Mail, Contacts & Calendars.

  • New mail-only account setup

I created a mail-only account and got it setup. We can send and receive email, but all mail to both my .mac account and the mail-only account comes into all of our mail inboxes rather than my mail-only account going to only that inbox. I have @me sync. turned on and have a macbook so not sure if I set up something different between the two computers. I looked at mail preferences and each email address appears to be set up correctly. thoughts?

    Go to System prefs
    Select Mail Contacts and Calendars
    Then select Other
Then select "Add a Mail Account and click create
Then go to google for the settings you need:
First here for the settings online at gmail http://tinyurl.com/du3fu
Then here for the setting in mail http://tinyurl.com/38fevm8
These are instructions for Mail 4.0 but all of the necessary settings should be listed.

  • Mail keeps trying to use .mac server - help

This concerns my mothers iMac that we just put a clean install of Panther on.
In mail, it attempts to use a .mac smtp server to send the mail. I went to preferences>accounts and even deleted the .mac smtp account. I left her Charter account there as the only account visible.
Still, mail attempts to send the emails using the .mac smtp server. An error window pops up asking to verify server info. We called Charter and all our information is correct for Mail. In the error window, the only server it gives us to select to send the mail is .mac smtp

You may have tried this already, but just in case :
If you go into your Mail preference/accounts settings again, and into "account information", can you see a box at the bottom marked "server settings " ?
If so, you should be able click it, and then delete or modify the smtp server(s).

  • I lost a Mail folder stored on the .Mac server:  Now how do I restore it?

With the new .Mac Mail put in place today, I somehow deleted a mail folder stored on the server. Fortunately, I just backed up this file last night.
Specifically, I backed it up by click-dragging all the mail stored on the Mail .Mac server to my desktop. That desktop file reads: Mac-username
Inside that desktop file, virtually all the mailboxes end with .imapmbox
Problem is, I can't figure out how to restore this folder. I tried turning Mail off and inserting the desktop backup copy into Library/Mail, etc., then restarting, but the one missing folder does not reappear on the server!
Perhaps I need to erase all the .Mac Mail files on the server first?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    You’re welcome.
I don’t think what you observed was caused by something you did wrong. Rather, it looks like a glitch in Mail.
As to how messages on the server can be backed up, I’d rather (1) copy them into custom "On My Mac" mailboxes in Mail first, then backup these, or (2) save them in standard mbox format (which must be imported as Other to bring them back into Mail), i.e. do File > Save As and choose Raw Message Source from the Format popup menu.
Backing up the data that Mail caches locally isn’t safe because it might or might not allow you to recover the messages afterwards depending on a variety of things, such as the account settings and the format used by the mail client to cache the messages locally (if any). What you did wouldn’t have worked in Mail 1.x without the aid of a third party utility, for example, no matter what the settings.

    Hello, mannatarora.
Thank you for the question.  The easiest way to troubleshoot this issue would be to delete the account and add it back to the iOS device.  Below, I have included two e-mail troubleshooting articles.

  • Mail App deleting messages from .Mac server

    Hi
I haven't seen this issue on this board. Let me know if I'm wrong.
This is on the interaction between my .Mac email account and the Mail Application. I have two email accounts set up.
I have 2 computers and keep my mail on one, so I kept my previous (Eudora) mail apps set to "leave mail on server" on the other.
I don't see a setting for this for my .Mac email account in Mail.app. When I check my mail with the Mail.app recently, on the computer where I don't keep my mail, it is deleting the mail from the .Mac account. I don't think it did this before. The mail is no longer on .Mac when I check via a browser.
My earthlink pop account seems to be working fine.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated

Whether it's correct or not depends on the
circumstances under which mail is removed from the
server. If it's because it's being moved out of the
account Inbox and into "On My Mac" custom
    mailboxes, then yes, it's correct.
For IMAP-type accounts, mail on account mailboxes are
stored on the server instead of locally (you can
configure this behavior for mailboxes other than
Inbox in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox
Behaviors). Whatever you do to that mail you're
doing it to the mail stored on the server. If you
tell Mail to move a message out of Inbox,
that's what Mail does, it moves the message out of
    Inbox at the server.
Thanks -- so if I understand this properly, the mail is stored on the inbox on the server, but if I have a rule that moves it to a mailbox that I created locally (imported from Eudora, for example) it moves it from the server to my local mailbox *not leaving a copy on the server*. I have lots of mailboxes that I use to sort the mail and rules to route messages. So to correct this issue I should disable the rules if I don't want the mail moved off the server and into a local mailbox.
Many thanks for your help and patience

  • User accounts disappeared from Mac Server

My company uses a Mac Server OS X v10.7.5 which we store all our files on and staff connect to it using a mapped drive (B:). This afternoon we stopped being able to connect, we rebooted the server like we normally do, however, when it came back online all of the user accounts have disappeared leaving only our admin account!
All of our files and folders are still there, it's just the user accounts used for accessing these folders that seem to have disappeared.
Coincidently, the + sign under the Users section is greyed out in server.app so I'm having to use Workgroup Manager to add new users. I've tried doing this for myself and given my user account access to the folders that I need however, when I try to map the B: it doesn't recognise my server credentials any more.
Basically, at the moment, no one can access any files or folders so I'm really hoping that someone has an answer on how to either restore the missing user accounts (if that's possible) or how to set up the user accounts so that we can access the files again.
Thanks in advance for any help.

From what I found out it was to do with corrupted Open Directory file, if you've previously archived the Open Directory (through Server Admin) you can restore a previous version or, as we had to do, copied all the server files to an external hard drive and restore from Time Machine, we did it for a point a week ago when it was working and all the user profiles came back.
If you don't already know how to do that, restart the server but hold down the cmd and R (command key and R key) at the same time until it gives you a screen with a list of restore options, select Restore from Time Machine Backup and select a date from a few days ago or whenever you knew it was working fine, depending on the size of the files on your server it can take a couple of hours to do this. Then copy the files from the hard drive back on to the server so youy have the latest versions again.
After it had done this all the user profiles were restored with passwords and groups etc..., if you do remove and restore the files then you may need to re-do any file access permissions but other than that it should be back to how it was before.
Hope this helps and I've explained the process ok.

  • How to set home for SSH-only account in OS X Server?

    Hi everyone,
I need a Linux VM to regularly access a shared folder via SSH/SFTP. So I created a new (network) user account on the Yosemite Server. If I select no user home - only services in Server.app I am not able to login with that user via ssh. If I select user home - only local I can login, but my current path will then be
    /Users/username/
I can go to / and see the rest of the file server, but I have no access to /Volumes/RAID/… where I need this account to be able to write to.
Ideally I would like to have a user account which only can use SSH (I know how to restrict that via SACLs) which auotmatically lands at /Volumes/RAID/data/here/ and can not cd upwards.
What would be the best way to accomplish this?
    Thanks
    Björn

I would now like to switch this user to automatically land in /Volumes/RAID/data/whatever/
In the Server app, select the Users panel, then select
              Local Users
from the popup menu above the user list. Right-click the user name in question and select
               Advanced Options...
from the popup menu. Change the home folder.
this test user has access to /Applications, /System and so on, even though I did not mark him as an Administrator.
You don't need to be an administrator to get into those folders, only to make changes.

  • Sharing Address Book with e-mail only accounts

    Hello:
I have created two email only account and would like to share the primary address book with these accounts. I have added these accounts in sharing folders and sent the invite.
The main functionality I am looking for is access my contact information via the .mac interface with the email only accounts. I have created the new emails accounts based on the fact Tiger was going to allow the contacts to be shared across multiple accounts.
    Can anyone help??

Address Book sharing uses the iDisk to store the contact data. So I am fairly certain that this feature doesn't work with email-only accounts.
