E17 in community

I'm currently uploading e17-cvs to the [community] repo. Most likely this will replace the e17 snapshots which are currently in [community] as it is unknown when, or even if the snapshots on the e17 server will be updated. However for the moment the snapshots are still available in [community] and will remain so until further notice.
If you want to install e17-cvs from the [community] repo, please remove any version of e17 you have on your system before installing.
e17-cvs from [community] will install under the /usr prefix, whereas the snapshots in [community] are installed under the /opt/e17 prefix.
If you happen to use the takhis repo, it will not work nicely together with e17-cvs from [community] for the same reason as the snapshots. The same goes for a lot of e17-cvs packages in AUR, they should all be updated to be installed under the /usr prefix.
After you have removed all currently installed versions of any e17 package, install e17-cvs with
pacman -S e17-cvs
and for any additional modules currently supplied in [community], do
pacman -S e17-extra-cvs
You can start e17-cvs by adding 'enlightenment_start' to ~/.xinitrc, or using the e17 login manager entrance.
Using entrance is as simple as
adding 'entranced' to the daemons in /etc/rc.conf
or
modifying /etc/inittab to use:
x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/entranced -nodaemon >& /dev/null
Any questions or problems, just ask.
NOTE:
the e17 wiki page should be adjusted to include the above. I did put a few comments there but it should be rewritten partly to incorporate above changes.
[edit]
x86_64 versions are now also in [community]

  • [Enlightenment E17] Problems with EFM after last Update [solved]

    Hello Folks!
I'm having some very ugly problems with my Enlightenment E17 Desktop after the last full system upgrade. This problem has already been reported to the German Arch Linux community, but no response yet, but I can't figure out that nobody else troubles the same probs.
This is the following what I get when running pacman -Ss e17-svn
    community/e-svn 42849-1 (e17-svn)
Enlightenment window manager DR17 (aka e17)
    community/e_dbus-svn 42682-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    dbus abstraction layer for e17
    community/ecore-svn 42854-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
Ecore is an abstraction layer for e17
    community/edje-svn 42794-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
A graphical design and layout library based on Evas
    community/eet-svn 42851-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
A data storage and compression library
    community/efreet-svn 42759-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    freedesktop.org specifications for e17
    community/eina-svn 42822-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    E17 file chunk reading/writing library
    community/embryo-svn 42739-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
implementation of a C like scripting language for e17
    community/evas-svn 42855-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    A hardware-accelerated canvas API for X-Windows
The problems that occur to me are following: I'm using EFM as file manager. It's not the best one, but it fits into the E17 concept - simple, lightweight, fast - and thats what I like. But, after the latest update, when I click a folder on my desktop, EFM now comes up in a stupid very tiny window. The window is so small, that I need to resize it every time to see any content. Before the update, everything worked fine, the EFM windows came up as they should.
Another problem I'm having with some applications, e.g. the Okular-Viewer, is that I'm not able to size down the window - it is always in full screen, and there's no chance to move it up (even not on the desktop preview widget) to move it down. Okular is always 100% filling my screen (over the height, only), and I'm not able to size it down. In the previous version, I didn't got this problems.
My question is now: is there any way to install the previous Enlightenment E17 packages? They where much better that this one... or will another update come out soon??
Thanks in advance for any help, any help is appreciated!

Have you tried starting with a clean config and the default theme, it helps sometimes after big code changes?
    If that doesn't help...
beachcoder wrote:My question is now: is there any way to install the previous Enlightenment E17 packages? They where much better that this one... or will another update come out soon??
If you find some mirror which keeps outdated packages that should not be a problem. Be sure to downgrade all of e17 packages (also some packages were deprecated and thus removed from the server during the last upgrade so you'd need to have those as well. You may still have those on your system though)
About a quick update, depends if Ican replicate it and if there is an easy fix. These things happen now and then with pre-alpha software when they do make major code changes.  I try to test every update locally before putting it live but I of course can't test every single feature.

  • E17 dock icons

I'm trying to add icons for other applications to the dock in e17 (from community).  When I launch the app there is an icon in the top left of the window however I cannot drag it to the dock as I get an error saying:
You tried to drop an icon of an application that does not have a matching application file. The icon cannot be added to IBar.
So no problem.. I left click on the icon again and choose create icon.  I then select a png file I grabbed off the net and off I go.  I once again drag the icon down to the dock and this time it gets inserted.
However, after exiting, the next time I run enlightenment the space where the application was is still there but the icon is gone.  Does anyone know how to solve this?  Is there some special place I need to put the application icons so that e17 knows to find it?
Else is there an archive of eaps out there for the common apps (gaim, thunderbird, etc)
    Thanks..

I see the eap files in that directory but no png files or icons. Are you sure they don't go in .e/e/icons ?
Is the community version of e17 still be maintained?  It looks like an up to date snapshot to me.

  • E17 new user...help.. :)

First of all I used E17 long ago on Ubuntu, but I wonna try on Arch, so I have some questions:
    1. From where to install E17, from Community repo or from Aur?
    2. How to have some network manager on shelf to manage networks? What to use, wicd? I do not understand very well how to add wicd on shelf etc..
    3. Can I replace default FM on E17?

whatever you like. I try to update the community repo 1 or 2 times per month to current svn state. If you don't actively follow development and try to help upstream I suppose that sould be enough. If not, there are various ways to compile yourself.

everything in e17 is a module, which you can choose to enable or disable. There is a systray module which you can use for any of your networkmanager/wicd type of thiings. There is also a connman module which you can use with the aur/connman package (connman is for example used in the meego distribution).
As everything is a module, so is the file manager, so you can disable the default one an use just any you like.

  • E17-CVS respositries not working

The respositires for e17-cvs appear to be down. I've tried to get both e17-cvs (in a thread I found) and e-cvs (in the wiki) to no avail- I've also tried adjusting my mirror lists, but no luck. I seem to get two errors:

or pacman just quits, or freezes.
Pacman works fine for all other packages, and indeed it worked fine for the first 11 megabytes of e17, but it appears the packages are not present, or something.
This is an example of what it does:

Then it just sits there. Can someone test the repos, or give me a link to a repo that that works?

I'm pretty sure that manchester mirror isn't up any more. Check this list for the list of mirrors available: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mirrors
Make sure you don't have any outdated mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and put the preferred ones at the top.

is that script any different from a full build through makepkg/yaourt using AUR's Pkgbuilds?

Edit: sorry, i looked at the python source and realized that it actually just syncs abs and then runs makepkg and namcap for each package. so i guess i'll use yaourt instead (or try to understand why makepkg exits with that error)

  • Graphical Errors in KDE since e17 install

    Hi,
I recently installed e17 from the community repository, and now KDE is having some graphical problems. Buttons are missing or missing text, the bouncing busy icon for launching applications is just a light blue square, the arrow on the panel's hide button is a square as well, and icons are missing from a number of places.
I've tried uninstalling e17, But it had no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There's no question that changing things in E17 can change things in KDE. I was playing around with using E17 as KDE's window manager, and just for fun I changed the icon properties for Firefox in E17's launcher to point to Konqueror, and it made the updates in KDE also. Apparently E17 is directly modifying the desktop file and not storing settings in some sort of configuration file.
By the way, at the time I made the changes, I was not logged into KDE at all, only E17. When I wrote the last paragraph, I was in E17 putting the settings back. Now I'm in KDE, and the settings took here also.

  • [SOLVED] E17 - "Incorrect Root Filename" when trying to use edje_decc

    Hi,
I decided to give E17 another try (on Arch this time, last time was on Bodhi) as a second DE.  I wanted to try creating my own theme this time now that I have some more experience with editing configs from using Arch but I am not able to get the "edje_decc" command? to work.  When I run it I get the following error about a "incorrect root filename":
    ERR<10767>:edje_decc edje_decc.c:136 decomp() ERROR: Invalid root filename: '00 '
I found this Arch Topic about it but it is from 2008 and doesn't seem to come to any conclusion as to what the problem was, just that downgrading fixed it.
I also found the following line of code that relates to it but I don't know what it means, maybe it will help someone else understand:
    if (!srcfiles->list->data || !root_filename_is_sane())
    printf("ERROR: Invalid root filename: '%s'\n", (char *) srcfiles->list->data);
    eet_close(ef);
    return 0;
Edit: The full code where I pull the above from is located at This Page , if anyone wants to help by looking further into it.
Anyone got an idea how to fix this or of another way to extract the E17 theme files?
    Last edited by boswbr25 (2012-05-12 07:32:17)

I'm not really sure if I did anything to fix the error or not.  I think I must have just chose themes that did not work when I got the error above.  I ended up trying to install using the easye17 script, then the Arche17, then straight from Enlightenment SVN but none worked on my computer.  Now I'm back on the standard e17-svn package from the Community repo and edje_decc just worked.

  • Can't get e17 working

I can't seem to get e17 working.  I crashes after the nvida logo with the folowing output:
enlightenment: symbol lookup error: /opt/e17/lib/libevas.so.1 undefined symbol: FT_Get_TrueType_Engine_Type
FreeFontPath FPE: "/usr/share/fonts/misc:unscaled" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing
I have tried the community repo (pacman -S e17) and thakis repo (ftp://thakis.net/arch) and still end with the same result.
I have tried tried both /opt/e17/bin/enlightenment and /opt/e17/bin/enlightenment_start in my .xinitrc too.
    Any ideas?

shen wrote:Yeah a rebuild of evas should do it.. That's what I did when I tried it out to get it working. Unfortunately I found E17 to be a touch sluggish and slow for what I wanted.

  • Arch with E17 or Elive?

    Hi all
this is my first message to this forum and I am a newbie to Linux in general. I would like to congratulate witth all of you for the work you are doing. I am an admirer of Linux developers and users.
I know you guys are in the majority gurus so please be patient. I hope this forum is better than other linux forums I have seen recently.
My question is: I am planning to nuke my windows and to switch to Linux after having tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I saw E17 and I think I want to use that DE. Now, the options I seem to like is to use Arch with E17 or Elive. Both would be E17 and they are both reportedly very fast distros.
Honestly, what would you suggest me? Elive seems to be stable (Debian-based) and born with E17, but have really few people taking part in the forums and they are not really helpful, while Arch seems to be more difficult, maybe less stable but the community seem better. Also what are the longtime prospects for both distros in your opinion? I mean I wouldn't like to switch distro in one year from now just because the developers can't make it anymore... I also like that Arch is famous for its good documentation... I really like to have something read.
Any opinion would be appreciated, but please no rtfm
    Cheers from Toronto
    Cippa

I have no experience with Elive, but used Debian for some time.
The development cycle in Debian was TOO SLOW!  Debian's quest for stability, while noble and effective, leaves users with ancient versions of software for far to long a time for my taste.  Arch often times has new versions ready before I even knew they were released.
Add in 'package hell' with old versions of packages and libraries trying to mix with newer and user built packages, and it leaves me foaming at the mouth
Arch not only is way ahead of the pack when it comes to keeping current, it's package management is top notch.  I can't imagine living life in Linux without pacman now that I have been using it this long.
As a long time distro-hopper, the fact that I have used the same flavor of Linux for over a year is a testament to the power Arch has.  It is certainly worth taking for a spin.
Edit: Also, Arch was the first distro that I used that made me feel comfortable enough to take windows clean off of the system.  All the other ones made me cling to the security blanket.  After using arch for a month or 2 I realized I never booted windows anymore, and it was simply wasting disk space.

  • [Solved] Enlightenment e17 - Black boxes

I've seen a few mentions of what might be this problem elsewhere, but haven't found any real information.
I'm using community/e-svn with extra/nvidia and compositing enabled. I'm getting unwanted black boxes appear where various effects are happening. For instance, right clicking a webpage in firefox opens a menu which uses a grow animation - starts as a horizontal line and grows larger vertically, which works fine, but simultaneously a black rectangle fades in behind the menu, shown in progress here
Likewise, tooltips show an ugly black box just before they appear
The enlightenment menus themselves dont seem to suffer from this issue, so perhaps it's a configuration problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Edit:
Tracked down the rasterman in #e on freenode, apparently there is a misconfiguration in the default compositor settings. I removed the 'fullscreen' style from the advanced view in settings panel/look/composite settings and this fixed the problem.

    1. I am not sure about your mouse problem
    2. The new update for some reason switches the channel. You will have to click on the speaker icon at the bottom and go into settings and change it to the front speaker, also make sure the lock sliders is checked.
    3. I have not found a way to do this, but you can have different launchers start on each desktop here are two resources for more tweaks

I have been using e17 for almost 6 months now. it takes some tweaking to make it feel like a solid desktop, but I believe that e17 is a solid desktop. It is fast and easy to use.

  • E17 language selector bug

Hey, so I've made a switch to E17 (community/e-svn from), and found that a long known bug doesn't let me use the keyboard layout switcher tool. Google gives nothing, the ticket is open. I just wanted to ask, has anyone here stumbled upon this problem and solved it?

    Thanks anyway.
This is a very stupid question and maybe for another post, but I couldn't try the class you posted here
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5203492
because I couldn't compile it because I downloaded the library and got the folder in for example here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Mis documentos\softsmithy-v20070520\softsmithy-v20070520\src\org\softsmithy\lib
From there I added them one by one to my own folder (the one where I have my Java projets and where I downloaded the class you posted) and then I started recompiling each class I was asked for when started compiling the class you posted, but there are so many classes in the library, each one needed to compile the other and I don't know how to compile all at once or include the whole library as a package..

  • Arch and E17

What is the best way to install E17 on arch? The build script on aur (cvs), the thakhis repo (cvs),... ?
The wiki-guide seems to be out of date... which packages schould I install after installing the main E17-group?

the e17 packages live in [community] and are part of a repo cleanup discussion.

  • E17 [solved]

    Ok,
So I was wondering if I really need to use hal with e17 to get the mounts with its filesystem to work. I can access my mounts just fine with pcmanfm at the moment.

How did you install e17?  I used the easy_e17.sh script, and with the places module, which is in the e-modules-extra-svn package, it mounts and unmounts drives as well as show /home, /, and /boot just fine with udisks.  However, I'm not sure that package in the community repo is up to date enough to have the most recent changes they made to the places module.

  • E17 Enlightenment File Manager warning [CONFIRMED]

E17 EFM built in the last week or so is now destroying, losing, or re-casing files (Upper to lower case. Very lame for PKGBUILD files!). This is happening with both pressd's builds in community, as well as my own builds that are from modified takhis scripts on both x86_64 and i686. This behavior is new. I'll file a bug report with Enlightenment.

I'm not quite sure if I fully understand what is happening on your machine. Could you elaborate a bit and tell me how I should be able to reproduce it. I haven't noticed any weirdness with EFM.
    [edit]
I assume you did also verify your problem with the default theme and a new ~/.e ?
I'll file a bug report with Enlightenment.
Can you post a link here when you've done so?
    http://bugzilla.enlightenment.org/show_bug.cgi?id=372
That will clarify things a bit. My new install (un-themed) was brand new (community packages). My desktop (themed) which isn't using the stuff from the repos was exhibiting the exact same behavior. Two different builds on two different architectures with the exact same problem, and only with EFM. Thunar is fine on both machines.
