E4500 - Can't see networked PC's

Since the upgrade by Cisco I can only see Win7 PC's on the network. I can not see the USB drive attached to the E4500, nor can I see my Media server which is Linux based nor any Win XP computuers.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Similar issue after rollback for me as well. No machines showing in "Workgroup computers" (XP Pro SP3) and no shares in "Network Places".
Having a list of IP reservations and wi-fi MAC permissions, I didn't want to hard reset/reconfig the router yet again. What seemed to work cleanly for me was to change the (XP Pro machines) 'Workgroup' name under 'Computer Name' properties, 'OK' my way out to the 'Reboot now?' prompt then, without a reboot, going back in and changing the 'Workgroup' name back to the original one, 'OK' out and then rebooted.
That returned all my shares and workgroup details back to 'normal' and everything plays well together.
NetScan showed all the IPs prior and all were pingable from CMD prompt just nothing showing in the workgroup screens.
FWIW - I don't run any media or devices other than 6 XP Pro and 2 WIN7 machines (and 2 DD-WRT based LinkSys 54Gs) in the network. One laptop with a LinkSys 300N wi-fi card did need me to "force" connect using my saved default profile. The auto would keep me out of the shares, etc. All machines had Internet access prior as well.
What I detailed above was only done to the LAN wired machines on the EA4500. Once that was done, the machines on the other end of the DD-WRTed 54Gs showed properly as did the ones wired to the router.
Looking back, I do wonder how it would've worked out if I had started with the "primary machine" that I set up the router with. Maybe save me a step or two? I don't know...

  • Can't see network drive attached to AirPort

    Hi All
I'm a newbie Mac user (just got my MacBook Pro last Thursday, in fact-- OS X 10.5.7). While I've got most of my issues doped out, I'm running into a problem connecting to a network drive that's plugged directly into my AirPort Extreme. I have three Windows systems (running XP and Vista) that can attach to the drive with no problem, but I can't figure out how to mount the drive under OS X.
If I use the Finder and select the router under "Shared", the Finder just spins with the message "Connecting..." for ages until it times out.
If I try to attach to a server, that doesn't work-- I've tried all the protocols in various flavors. Everything times out. I do get the message that the server or password is incorrect, but I never see a prompt for a password, so I am not sure what's going on there.
In short, I'm stumped. When I open up the AirPort utility, and view the disk, the drive is attached-- it has a name, and it gives the correct statistics on used/free space. When I go to File Sharing, the checkbox for Enable File Sharing is clicked.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Ed

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • Airport Express and iPhones can't see network-macs and ipad can?

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to a comcast modem, with 2 express units for airtunes.
After some fiddling around due to the comcast outage, now I can't see either of the Airport Express units in the Airport Utility, AND neither my or my wife's iPhone can see the network. The iPad, iMac, Macbook and a PC can all connect no problem. My phone connects to wifi at work no problem.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Your settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
wireless Network Name = Name of your wireless network
Check mark not needed next to Allow this Network to be extended
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Radio Channel = Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Backspace and retype your password here
Confirm Password = Backspace and retype your password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
If you have a simple modem (only one ethernet port), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Share a public IP address
If you have a gateway (combination modem and router with 3-4 ethernet ports), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Off (Bridge Mode).
    Update to save changes
    Restart all other devices
    Any luck?

  • Can't see network in 10.3.9

I'm setting up a network in a new house. Everything is working find except my G4 desktop.
I have two wireless options and both have the same problems. Whether I use a Sonnets PCI wireless G card or an AeroLAN in a PCI cardbus reader I can't see any networks.
The G4 desktop sees either card as an airport, I can address it, turn it on and off, no problem. BUT, it won't find the network. In the same room, same location, on my 12" PB (which usually has crappy reception) I am showing three different networks, but none of those networks show up on the G4 Desktop.
I know it's not an antena problem because MacStumbler finds them just fine on the G4 desktop, using the same wireless hardware.
I have installed the latest airport software.
My router is a Netgear using WEP incription. We have a G4 powerbook, G4 iBook, MacBook and G5 desktop all connecting to it wirelessly without a problem, so I know everything is working there.
I tried entering the router name and password directly into the network preference pane, but all I get is a "There was an error joining the network" message.
Any ideas what I can try, reset, delete or otherwise tweak.
I'm pretty good and this usually, but I'm stumped. Worse yet, it's my daughter's computer and she threatening to take her babysitting money and buying a Dell!

Is there an antenna connection for an airport card in the Tower computer?
If you have adapted a wi-fi card via some device and there isn't a proper
antenna or it is not connected, there also would be no outside signal.
Are the connections all snug? How is the airport card or similar
wi-fi device being used in the desktop computer?
Other hardware may have to be used to check and see if you can get
the signal into the desktop computer; one of the devices I've read about
but not tried uses an ethernet connection to bring in wi-fi from what I
thought was called a "wireless bridge," but am not sure now.
When I had an older (early model) Blue and White PowerMac G3 350, it
was not designed for an internal wi-fi airport card, and I wasn't sure if I was
going to keep it; there had been other issues with the computer. When I
bought an AEBS base station with modem and external antenna port, I
also had a white iBook G3 500; so I wanted to use both computers from
one dialup connection. I used the desktop computer via ethernet from the
port in the base station, and administered the AEBS by wire from it; and
was able to use my iBook G3 (with original airport card) plus several visitors
were able to see and use the AirPort Extreme Base Station.
There may be a problem in how that desktop computer gets a signal.
(Or doesn't get one, as it seems to be.) If the hardware is good, and
there theoretically should be a signal, perhaps there's a software problem.

  • Nautilus can't see network.

Arch Newbie here so bear with me.
When I first installed Arch, I put KDE4 on it because I wanted to try it out.   Today I decided that I wanted to go back to Gnome so I installed Gnome, and left KDE4 where it was.   Everything seems to be working great except 1 problem.  I can't see the network from Nautilus, but it shows up fine in Dolphin.   I'm sure this is a config I need to change somewhere but it's a bit daunting trying to find the location.   I've searched the forum, and even on google, but I can't seem to find any solid answers.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and any help you might be able to provide.

Thank you very much, sir!  I'm still very new, so I had forgotten about the -Si command.  It is definitely something I need to remember.
It listed an optional package called gvfs-smb.   I installed it, rebooted the machine, and Nautilus now reads the Samba network!
Best community in the Linux world here!   Thanks so much for the fast reply!

  • On wake, MBAir can't see network resources?

I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out, but basically I just close my MBAir when I'm done and I don't shut it down - so it's just sleeping.  Well, when I wake it up it gets a network connection and everything works... except that it can't see my network printer, network drives, or other mac on the network.
First solution that works is to reboot, but of course that shouldn't be the case.  The other solution that seems to work is turning off my wi-fi connection and turning it back on again.  Voila!  I can see everything.  I just don't know why I would need to do that and I don't know if that's a problem with the MBAir hardware or Lion.
    Ideas folks?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
As you mentioned several times in the post that you set up the VPN with a router. In this way, there will be no VPN Server or VPN client, all the computers and router are in the same network.
When you dial in the network with another computer, there will be another internet connection icon appeared at the Network and Sharing Center, then right click the icon, then click set as default connection.
In this way, all the computers can visit each other.
There is still one thing that confuses me, do you deploy a VPN server with a windows server? Or with a third party software? I don’t understand what do you mean the “VPN server”.
I think you should post more information about the VPN server for further troubleshooting.

  • Can't see network shares

    Hi guys,
For the past week, my MacBook Pro (retina 2012) can't see any network shares in Finder or in "Network", including time capsule. I can connect through IP address, but this way my backup doesn't work.
Also, the Airport Utility can see Internet connectivity, but doesn't detect presense of the time capsule.
My Macbook air on the same network has no such problem. I'm running OS 10.8.1 on both.
Any help would be most apreciated.

Just for future reference, turns out issue is related to Checkpoint Endpoint Security VPN client for Mac (E75).
Once application (and deamon) are removed, OS X behaves as expected.

  • Can't see network unless Qnap 209pro network drive is switched on

I find this a bit strange but I cant see the Windows computers on my network unless my QNap network drive is switched on. Also sometimes I have to click an alias to something on the network drive before I can see it.
The strange thing is I can take over pc using remote desktop even though they don't show up in my network

No the Mac does not not see the drives on my other P.C's until I turn the netowrk drive on and click the shortcut.
Is there not a way of manually searching for anything on the network. With windows you can go to network and search from there.

  • Lightroom can't 'see' Network drive

Ok, for the past two years of using lightroom I've had my RAW files stored on an xserve RAID that's networked to my editing station.   Nothing about this set up has changed and has worked very well until Monday (that was a monday for sure)
Monday, after installing the x-rite color checker passport plugin, I decided to reboot my machine as it was getting sluggish having just worked on several large files in Photoshop.  Lightroom wanted to do its weekly catalog backup so I let it.   Fast forward several hours later, lightroom was locked up for sure.  So I had to force quit and restart.
Upon restart lightroom gave me ?  on most of the folders on my network drive, only one folder was showing normal.  I checked the drive and permissions everything is fine there.   I tried one of my many catalog backups with the same results.     I didn't have time to monkey around so I erased lightroom prefs and folder in app support and proceeded to re-install lightroom.    After I had the same result.  At this point I also noticed on the import screen it only saw that one folder on the drive...    At that point I made an entirely new catalog based on just this years images(24k or so compared to 43k in my other catalog) and left that going overnight.  everything imported fine and created preview images, however this brand new catalog has the same issue!
    please help!
Note, I've just tried lightroom on another machine and it sees the folders fine.

    interesting,
When I made the new catalog there was just the one folder in 'Select a source'  for that network drive(there are 12 folders on the first level of that drive) when I made the new catalog, the only way I could add images was by dragging and dropping them on the lightroom icon in the dock.   As well only that one folder was available in the 'destination'.
Today now all the folders I imported yesterday via drag and drop are available in the source and destination areas.   Such odd behavior, since the 'new' catalog is still having the issue I made a new test one and imported just a small number of images and it seems to be working, both through the import dialog selecting the source and drag and dropping.
Going to restart my computer just to be sure it continues to function properly.   If so, I guess it is half fixed enough to be usable. I would prefer to know the underlying cause and a better fix for this since I no longer have use of my old catalogs even though I've diligently backed them up and there are some edits I've done that are in the catalog and not saved in the DNG file. I can't save that info if the program can't 'see' the files when using those catalogs.

  • MacBook can't see network that iPhone can

    Hope someone can help!
I'm posting this from my iPhone while on holiday. I brought along an old Airport Express (b/g) and connected it to the hotel's Ethernet port. I had set up the Express before leaving home to Create a wireless network and to connect to the Internet by DHCP.
My father's MacBook isn't able to see the network I have created, but it can see several other networks which must be from nearby buildings or rooms. My iPhone can only see my network, and I was able to log in and pay for Internet access.
Unfortunately my dad's MacBook doesn't even have the correct version of airport utility installed, must have migrated the PowerPC version when migrating to the MacBook by mistake. I can't get it to even manually connect to the network by entering the name manually. It keeps giving me a connection timeout error message.
I tried to disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Airport Express to plug the MacBook in directly but the system wants payment again! Presumably it charges per Ethernet MAC address.
My guess is there is network interference from so many close networks, but I can't understand why my iPhone works perfectly well. And I can't get into the airport utility to change channels as there is no airport utility for iPhone!
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Min Yu

Try restarting the router and the MacBook.

  • Can't see networked computer in the finder's network window.

I can no longer see my MacPro from my MBP in the finder's "Network" window.
I can still connect using "Connect to Server" and typing the IP manually.
From the MacPro I can see the MBP just fine.

Apple uses a service called "Bonjour" to discover devices on a network. Bonjour piggybacks on the mDNS service, meaning it broadcasts on port 5353. Apple is sensitive to being called "chatty", because it's past device discovery methods were indeed chatty. Bounjour has built in some passivity, and devices will delay their broadcasts if logic detects they're not needed. Sometimes all it takes is clicking on the Network tab.
It all boils down to 1 of 3 things:
    1) The MacPro is not sending out Bonjour discovery packets.
    2) The MacPro is sending out Bonjour discovery packets, but the discovery packets are not reaching the MBP. This is highly doubtful, since the process is working in the opposite direction.
    3) The packets reach the MBP but it's not responding to them.
There's a great (and free) utility called Bonjour Browser, and it's available on versiontracker. If you run it on the MBP, you'll have a much better ideas as to what's happening.
My best guess is that the MacPro is not sending out packets. This would either be due to not having anything to share (File Sharing turned off) or logic which dictates that it's been sending out these packets for a long time so they're delayed for 30 minutes to reduce chattiness.

  • IBook 14" 600 - Airport - Can't see network

I just upgraded to the Extreme N Airport Base - Now I can't get my old iBook 600 to see the network (My MBP and MacPro see it fine).
I've tried the 802.11a compatibile setting as well as the b/g. Neither allows it to be seen.

802.11a uses 5 GHz which the iBook can't use at all.
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) must be configured to operate in an 802.11b/g compatible mode.
Try configuring the AEBS to use a channel between 1 and 11.

  • Intel Mac can't see network

My airport extreme network functions well for my Motorola based Macs and windows machines. Suddenly my two intel based machines, a MacBookPro and a MacBook, show no network signal even though the other computers are working fine wirelessly. When I call Apple, I get shuffled between MacBook and Networking people and never get an answer. Any suggestions?

    Hi kmacwilliam,
I am having a similar issues with yours, my MBP and MB couldnt not stay connect to the dlink router recently. But the PC's been working fine all the time. The wireless would drop and could not see the network again while my neighbours' networks were still displaying. Even restarting the MBP and router wont see my wireless network.
You can try these things and see if it works for you, it's worked for me for time being. Please post back the outcomes:
    1. Delete any airport-related passwords in the "Keychain" so no airport passwords are stored
    2. Shut down the iMac
    3. Reset the PMU in your case for the G4 iMac, you may need to open your back case to reset it
    3. Turn on your iMac and you should see the network again
I am suspecting this might be software issue, hope this works for you.

  • Can't see Network in the Finder

I'm on a Windows network at my office. Before upgrading to Mavericks, I was able to see the Network in the finder sidebar, along with nodes (users) on the network. • Can't see network PCs in Leopard finder or browsing.

I have never been able to see any of my PCs in Leopard or even in Tiger. I have never paid attention to it in Tiger, but now that I have Leopard, I would really like to use the screen sharing feature. Everything that I have read says to check the workgroup name, which I have changed to WORKGROUP, the windows default on my AirPort extreme, all of my PCs (vista and xp) and on my Mac. In system preferences though, whenever I try to change the workgroup name in the network panel, I apply the changes, then it never keeps the changes that I make. I think that I have turned on sharing on the PCs, but I am not 100% sure of how to do it properly. I have windows xp home, professional, and vista and a Mac running Leopard. All computers are on an AirPort network made up of three routers. An airport extreme and two airport expresses. Thank you to anyone who can help, I would really like to be able to use the networking features in Leopard.

Allright, today for the first time for about 10 minutes, I could see all of my network computers. Then, they were gone. Possibly something that caused that to happen was that a friend came over with a Mac. When the their Mac was on, I could see the computers. When their computer was turned off, they disappeared. I am not sure what is happening. I was able to connect to my computer and browse it for the short time that I could. But now I'm back where I was again.
Now that is interesting (and something beyond my comprehension). For the record though, I know that it IS possible to get Leopard to see a PC network, without resorting to a hosts file edit (that can only work if you manage the network and allocate the IP addresses.. not a reality in most worklplaces). I know this because I have done it. I can't consistently browse for PC's, but I can always connect to the share.
When you tried to connect to your PC's directly from the Go menu, did you connect by name or by IP address?
If by name, have you tried adding '.local' to the PC network name? (i.e. smb://yourPCname.local/thenameoftheshareonthePC).
If that fails, use the Go menu again and try smb://yourPCipaddress/thenameoftheshareonthePC).
If that fails, disable "Simple File Sharing" on your PC, and try again.
Don't get disheartened, technology can be a "female dog" sometimes! These issues happen with all kind of OS - even Windows boxes can sometimes struggle to sort themselves out on a Windows network...
