E61 - Killer features - Seriously under-realised.

E61 - Killer features - Seriously under-realised.
Don't get me wrong, the E61 is a fantastic device & easily the best smartphone I've owned to date but some of it's BEST features seem very oddly thought out:
Access Point Groups:
+ This feature is nothing short of revolutionary. The ability to set up a preferred use of networks (wireless at home & the office or 3G when I'm out) Outstanding!
- But at present it is ONLY possible to select it as the *default* connection method for email & syncing. It SHOULD be possible to use this feature as the *default* for web browsing & every other internet application?
Message notification.
For an integrated device the notification system is seriously disjointed.
+ The Standby screen (or day view). After much searching through menu's I found the option to turn on message display in the Standby screen. Lovely.
- Why is it only possible to have the day view show txts OR emails? And why when you select one of these, does it display the top two messages This is worse than useless.... despite the glaring fact you may not want the first line of your private texts clearly displayed on the front of your phone.
It SHOULD show only unread message's: Txts AND emails & only the senders name.
The LED:
+ Potentially a fantastic feature.
- But again for an integrated phone, it will ONLY work for emails.
It SHOULD work for all unread messages. Txts & emails.
Multimedia:
+ Despite being marketed as a business phone it is a powerful multimedia device too.
- What is the point of including mp3 & video software with a mono ear piece?
Nokia SHOULD at least have supplied the short Popport to 35mm headphone jack that is available all over ebay. Heck if they didn't want to put it in the box, they could at least offer it as an accessory on their online store.
Love the phone but REALLY hoping that a firmware update will resolve some of the above.
R.

Nokia won't listen to us and believe me the E65 is going to be my last Nokia phone!
I started a petition, it was removed by Mr. ajak who seem to be working for Nokia, all i got from him is the following answer:
"I am sure there is lots of people out there that feel their particular issue is the most urgent. i can assure you that issues are being worked on and fixes will be released when a working fix is available.
As one fo my fellow mods has advised, the issue has already been passed on"
I think he would better posted an ETA on the petition as a reply rather than removing it and pm'ing me.
Have you though about people who already signed it? dont they deserve an answer??!
The situation is getting worse.
Excuse me for my poor english
ADD E65 TO NSU!

  • There needs to be a way TO TURN OFF this audio-killing feature.

I've written in Apple's suggestion form several times during the past two and a half years, but iChat seems quiet forgotten since Leopard. So now I'm wondering if there's a hack-like way to fix this.
My girlfriend and I are in a long-distance relationship.
I live with a roomate on a 11quartermaster who can be quiet noisy. She lives in a family-packed home.
iChat has a tendency to gradually mute the other person if loud audio is coming from one side. This feature is useless. Skype doesn't do it, and we always have clearer audio. But Skype has far less features, iChat theater for watching films and sharing music and pictures with one another. Screensharing for giving techsupport, group video for free (How the &%#€ does Skype charge for P2P chat anyway?)
So, is there any way to disable this "Smart" audio leveling/normalizing feature? Oh and while I'm at it, is there a way to make calls autoresume if connection is lost? A session can easily last 3 hours, sometimes 6+, saying something for a long time, thinking you can be heard only to find out it's saying that there was no connection for 10 seconds, is quiet frustrating when it happens several times a day, every day of the year.
Thanks in advance! Willing to use any terminal-based fixes!
What we did to troubleshoot: Turn off and on the "recude ambient noise" in sound settings, as well as both using headphones. I asume the feature is to stop feedback, but feedback is impassible with headphones (As long as they are volumed responibly)

    Hi,
On the sound front you seemed to have tried most things.
From the way you started I was thnking of Headsets but I se you have tried them as well.
I generally keep my Volume on my computer fairly low.
I then use this AppleScript that is linked in the iChat Video Invites in the Alerts section of the Preferences so it is auto Triggered.

You could take the second part of this and set it in a loop to keep resetting the volume every few seconds.

  • Two missing "Killer-features"

    Hi,
although i really love Aperture, there are two really important features missing for me - and i'd like to know, how u handle these:
    1. Comparing before/after adjustments
    2. Quick Collection
Well, i know both is possible to do (duplicate version, keywords), but these solutions are less convenient (i.e. take more time) than Lightroom's solutions.
    So what do u do?

    Sekoya wrote:
If i have to do this often - and i have to - it's way more work than just clicking a single button (twice).
Just out of curiosity (so I can learn something about LR), which key is that in LR? And what two states are compared? Obviously one is the current state of the image. Is the other one the default state (ie, no adjustment except those optionally applied upon import)?
I agree, one key only is simpler. But personally I am happy with the switch between master and adjusted version via M in Aperture. Moreover, comparing to the master is something I rarely need, I rather often want to compare between two versions (eg, one with more contrast and one with less) and that requires two versions anyway.
Well, "M" just works, if before u produced a slave. So two keys.
In Lightroom it's "Y", and compares the image u just see, before and after u apply changes.
Clearly i have to select the images, but then i just press "b" - to put them into "Quick Collection". The uncomfortable point in Aperture - at least for me - is, that if i create a new album, i have to drag new images into it. Or i have to select ALL images i want to put into that new Album at once.
But maybe i dont get the point.
Unfortunately, I think I am missing something as well. I thought in LR, you can select a number of image, hit a key (b) and create a quick collection. The equivalent in AP would be to do exactly the same, select a number of images hit two key (cmd-K or cmd-L) and create an album or a stack that contains the images. What would be the difference here between LR and AP?
But what if later you want to add images to the album? In Aperture i have to drag it into, do i?
In Lightroom i still just press "B".
I really like many thing in Aperture, and would like to switch, just these two things are important in my workflow.

  • Projector killed hard drive under newly installed yosemite??

    hey folks!
i connected my macbook pro (mid 2012, non-retina) to a projector today and as i did that everything froze. i disconnected the projector, but no change. i forced a reboot and got a light grey screen with a blinking folder and question mark. it turns out my internal hard drive is dead.
i updated to yosemite last week and have had smaller issus since then when connecting to a projector (black space where the keynote window was before which only vanished with a reboot).
can anyone tell me, whether my hard drive dying has anything to do with the update to yosemite (my warranty ran out 2 weeks ago)? anyone with similar problems?
    thanks!

I think it is very unlikely that the two are connected.
It is more likely (though not certain) that something weird happened when plugged into the projector. Like a bad cable or a bad port that maybe allowed some kind of power surge back into the motherboard that might have affected the hard drive. But let me emphasize...this is a very unusual problem that should not have happened. Thousands of Mac laptops are plugged into projectors every single day in corporations and schools and universities. It is not a problem that should be expected to happen.
Also, dying hard drives have not been reported by the thousands of Mac users who have also done the Yosemite upgrades. I have two Macs that upgraded to Yosemite without a problem.
I don't know what the real cause was, but chances are it was a fluke. One possibility: The hard drive was already having undiagnosed problems, and this just pushed it over the edge.

  • Live Update Killed Features...Again GT70 ONC

Ran Live Update 5 and stupidly allowed it to update drivers. Now I'm getting no response from KLM (keyboard is dark and utility will not run), S-Bar crashes on start up/launch, and MSI Suite "only supports MSI MotherBoard".
Unlike last time when I could go to the product webpage and restore these services, I get errors on install or they remain unresponsive.

    Don't use live update.
I suppose you are using Win7 if you have S-Bar then install latest .Net Frameworks and then latest S-Bar.
If you have Windows8 you need SCM instead.
For Win7 you need this KLM version, for Win8 this KLM version
Best to uninstall the current first and then install the linked. Forget about MSI Suite.

  • How to find out which feature is Licensed in Oracle 11G?

    Hi,
while reading oracle documentation, i found a feature "Health monitor " which i want to test on my Oracle 11G instance. However, i am not sure if my database is licensed or not for this feature and whether this is a feature which comes along with Enterprised edition or not
    1) May i know where can i find out if a given feature is licensed or comes free with enterprised edition?
    2) In my database, can i assume all the features given under dba_feature_usage_statistics are licensed?
    Thanks

  • Simple solution to getting advanced features working on iWeb 1.1

I've been rather frustrated with the problems with iWeb 1.1, but after a couple of hours of experimenting, I now have a solution and theory about the problem. For a quick summary, scroll to the bottom of the post.
I have a site with a small blog a few photo pages. Publishing all resulted in the errors so many other people have been getting. In desperation, I deleted my photo pages, removed the comments and search features, and published all.
    It worked. Flawlessly.
Next, I turned the comments back on, which also worked. Clearly the problem isn't with them. Can't be with simply having images either, as several published pages had images. Neither can it be punctuation as I was getting failures with pure alphanumeric characters in page names and image comments (and even with blank image comments). The next obvious thing to eliminate was volume of images.
To test this, I recreated one of my photo pages with 12 images, instead of the usual 20. It worked! The photo page was there, the advanced slideshow worked and the comments worked fine. After that, I was able to add more images to the page and publish the changes without any problems. Adding more pages is fine as well.
You can check for yourself at http://www.jonathanboyd.co.uk (forwards to my .Mac account)
It seems that uploding too many images in one go results in a problem. It may be that iWeb is timing out after a certain time and assuming that the upload has failed. Faster connections or uploading in smaller chunks would allow the upload to complete before the timeout.
    To summarise:
The problem seems to be with uploading too much in one go. Get around it by publishing a small site to start with, then gradually adding photos in chunks of around 12 at a time. It'll take a while to get it done, but your site will work with all features.
I realise that this is probably a little frustrating for anyone with a lot of photos on their site, but if it is just iWeb being impatient, then hopefully it'll be trivial for apple to fix. Could also explain why they missed it in testing, if they have nice fat pipes and are next to the servers.

Judging by the number of people that are experiencing these problems, I wonder if the Apple .Mac servers are simply getting overloaded by everyone trying to publish the entire contents of their web sites to take advantage of the new features at the same time.
It looks very much like a network time-out related issue and because iWeb doesn't allow you to retry uploading failed files, you are less likely to encounter the problem with small incremental updates rather than large ones. Also, this means that whenever the upload fails you have to start all over again, which must be adding to the load on Apple's web servers, further compounding the problem.
I have made a couple of bug reports/enhancement requests via iWeb's feedback facility suggesting that the error dialog be given a 'Try Again' button and that files are uploaded as zip archives to try and reduce the round-trip delay that is incurred when uploading hundreds of individual files, as is currently the case. Maybe if more people make similar suggestions then this problem will be resolved quicker, making the whole publishing experience more efficient and less error prone.
In the meantime, perhaps the best thing is just to sit tight and wait until the .Mac servers are responding more quickly again some time next week...

  • Forum (+ features?) for TextEdit?

    Howdy all -
    a) I'm looking for the appropriate forum for asking questions about TextEdit. I used the community serach box for identifying the appropriate community, but it gave no results in response to "TextEdit" or "Text Edit".
    b) Is it possible to change defaults in TextEdit such as:
         i) size of new document window i.e. Zoom command;
         ii) %-zoom level;
         iii) # of recent documents in "File > Open Recent";
iv) contents of header and footer?
I live and die by TextEdit because it meets most simple word processing needs (e.g. for meeting notes, course notes, lists, ideas, citations, study guides etc); opens damnfast; generally avoids all issues of compatibility when it comes to collaborations; offers better non-English language support than either Pages or Word (specifically right-left language and bi-lingual text support, e.g. Arabic & English on the same line) etc. So I am not really interested in changing programs over these issues unless the suggested programs do all of the above equally well (or better) and are cheap / free (!! - don't want to waste anyone's time here :-D).
I'm aware that one can create an application-specific shortcut for the % zoom-in found at the bottom-right corner [only visible in wrap-to-page mode] (> System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > "+" > TextEdit > zoompercentage% > Desired Short).
Similarly for the Zoom feature found under the Windows > Zoom (or the green circle in the upper right-hand size) it is possible to create an application-specific short cut; however, unlike its behaviour in other applications, it does not optimize the page for the % zoom-in selected. Rather, it optimizes the page size assuming one is working at 100%, only.
[[[ Side note for those who wish the green circle maximized the page size (i.e. full screen) instead of optimizing it (i.e. as large as the content requires, up to full screen): in many applications, if you push option-click green circle, it'll maximize the window. This doesn't work in all applications though, e.g. TextEdit! (I've tried it in Chrome, Mail, iTunes, Safari etc. and it works in all of them) ]]]
As for the other defaults mentioned, I haven't a clue. Any & all suggestions welcome and appreciated!
    c) Despite its relatively good bilingual support, I have a recurring issue with TextEdit when toggling between English and Arabic keyboards. Every once in a while, when I toggle back to English, it changes the font to Lucida Grande, despite the fact that I've set the default to Baskerville. This seems to happen if I modify any part of the text created with one keyboard while in the other keyboard setting (e.g. if I have too many spaces after the last Arabic word and use backspace on the English keyboard and then start typing, the font changes). Generally if I just switch between the two without ever making mistakes (!!) it doesn't happen (or at least not often).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated (including where pre-existing TextEdit discussion might be found)!
    All the best,
    Rax

So I think I have finally discovered possible solutions to all of these issues myself and just thought I would share it in case anyone else was interested. The solutions are posted under each cited question below:
    a) I'm looking for the appropriate forum for asking questions about TextEdit. I used the community serach box for identifying the appropriate community, but it gave no results in response to "TextEdit" or "Text Edit".
    Right - this is it.
    b) Is it possible to change defaults in TextEdit such as:
         i) size of new document window i.e. Zoom command;
The default size of a window in TextEdit can be set under the TextEdit preferences for a new document (TextEdit > Preferences ... > New Document > Window Size). The potentially confusing / misleading units of "characters" for width and "lines" for height do not specify anything to do with the document settings, only the actual program window. Also note that you cannot (so far as I can tell) have default "Wrap to Page" selected at the same time.
         ii) %-zoom level;
I did not find an alternative solution to the program-specific shortcut outlined in the question.
         iii) # of recent documents in "File > Open Recent";
I found this one by complete accident - stumbling about System Preferences. Go to System Preferences > Appearance > Number of recent items, there there are drop-down menus for the number of recent Applications, Documents and Servers, up to 50. It is applied across the board. Am a little surprised no one on the forum suggested this!
As for the header / footer info, I was not able to find any means of controlling that info - only how to turn it on/off in printing.
Ultimately my solution for being able to open new TextEdit documents that are the appropriate size (i.e. easily readable & appropriate point size) was to deselect "wrap to page" default, set the appropriate window size for a document in 150% zoom as the default and set similar / related shortcuts for wrap-to-page & 150% zoom. Along with the increased recent docs menu - it means managing documents in TE is that much faster.
If anyone has other ideas / solutions to these or any of the other issues mentioned in the first post, I'd still be very interested.

  • Feature Request: Unified DVE tool

As I begin experimenting with Premiere Pro CC, I keep wishing there was more of a unifed DVE tool that emcompess tools that are currently available, but as seprate actions.
In my mind a unified DVE tool would have most of the features currently under the motion tab: Position, Scale, Uniform Scale, Rotation, Anchor Point.  It would also have Opacity.
It would also have the main features of the Basic 3D effect but implemented as part of Rotation.  Calling them Swivel and Tilt is non standard.  Look at After Effects.
It would have the elements of Corner PIn effect.
It would have the ability to crop the image.
It would have the ability to add either softness to the crop or a border or both.
I think you see where I am going with this.
It slows down your workflow to have to go hunting for these commonly used tools.
    Thanks for reading.

    Hello Ann,
Most of my questions relate to having spent more than an afternoon pushing buttons with all the effects.  It is important to understand that I come from a background of smoke and Avid DS - two very strong effects / editing applications.  Plus I am reasonably comfortable with After Effects.
I am trying to determine if Premiere will satisfy my client's expectations for effects work within the editing application.  I realize that some of the things I look for can be more easily dealt with by pushing to After Effects.
I just want to know what can and can not be done with the native tools in Premiere.

  • Some iOS features  is difficult to use.

I installed iOS 7 last night and I am quite impressed with many of the features however there are a couple that I find annoying, bordering on useless.

For example, Safari appears to have submitted the form before I was finished writing ...
The first thing I noticed was while changing the wallpaper, I was unable to move and scale an image to fit my screen. Apparently, the only way to correct this so far is to turn off Parallax by switching on the Reduce Motion feature, buried under Accessibility, in General settings. Scaling and moving an image seems to be a simple feature, and this way of doing so seems counter-intuitive.
Last night, I was able to activate the Control Center, but when I turned on my iPhone today, I could not get it to work either from the lock screen or main screen. I then tried my iPad, and I found that it would only work if I swiped from off screen. This explains why I can't get it to work on my iPhone, as my OtterBox case comes to within less than 1mm from the screen, and there is not enough room to pull up the Control Center
Given that these problems affect both my iPad and iPhone, I believe that this problem is with the os, and not with either device.

  • MSI X79A-GD45 8D overclocking 3930k question about Power Saving Features

    hi guys
    i could do the oc for my 3930k.Now i am on 4.3ghz.Here are the settings i made ;
i didnt change the cpu multiplier left it on auto.
EIST and Turbo features are on.I just change the multpliers of the core limits for every core.I made core limit 43 for all cores.
Also i set the vcore offset feature to %12.5 and it made the voltage under load 1.280 which can hold system stable @ 4.3ghz.
when cpu is idle multiplier and voltage decreasing and when the cpu is under load voltages and multipliers increase.
    thats what i want.  But;
i tested the vcore offset as %100 the auto voltage under load increases to max 1.344.If i go for 4.8ghz probably i would need more than 1.344 on this situation what will happen?because i will need more than 1.344 but the auto voltage will give me just 1.344.How can we arrange this?
then i tried to enter voltage manually but the voltage didnt decrease even all the power saving features on.I haven't change any settings  i mentioned above for the 4.3ghz oc.I just changed the vcore voltage to manuel. Everything stayed the same like decreasing multiplier under idle and increasing multipliers under load except the voltage. It stayed the same as i gave in the bios.
    from here
I read from somewhere that on msi boards if you put the cpu multipler manually you loose power saving features.Everytime under load or idle cpu will be stay at the same ghz.Is that true?
if i give the cpu multiplier manuel or vcore voltage can i benefit from the power saving features like  decreasing voltages and multiplier under idle and  and incresing them under load ?
or when i enter the cpu multiplier and voltage manually ,does the power saving features go away?

Quote from: Froggy Gremlin on 29-November-12, 19:15:02
VDroop set to 100% is all you are going to get. 1.344v's should get you about 44-46X on the cores on 'Auto'. The voltage goes down from there with the lower VDroop settings. With CPU V. set to 'Auto', you get power saving, soon as the CPU V. is taken out of 'Auto', you lose it. No, the CPU speed may lower, but the voltage going to it will not.
VDroop is not a true offset feature like can be found on other brands of boards. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162779.0
Most folks around the industry recognize 1.350v's as the recommended limit for socket 2011 CPU's, so 1.344v's is fairly close to that anyway.
So when i set the voltage and the cpu multiplier i loose power saving features right?
    Thanks for the reply

  • DPS Feedback From Client: A Book Publisher's Perspective

    Greetings,
I thought it might be helpful to both Adobe and other publishers to post some real-world feedback from one of our clients.
    But first, some background:
We are a book publisher moving into the realm of book apps. Our book apps or not at all like their printed counterparts and mix in a bunch of new content and interactive features. Our apps are also not like magazines, which is what DPS feels like it was designed for.
We've been doing some testing with DPS, especially as it relates to a business model for us and our clients. We've also been testing resolutions, and figuring out the differences between single-issue and multi-issue apps.
I posted an overview of where our tests led us in terms of single vs. multi, here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4333151#4333151
and I posted some resolutions tests to see if an iPad 1/2 resolution app would look "good enough" on an iPad 3 (or the new iPad), here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4333426#4333426
and finally an overview of what we hope Adobe will do with single-issue apps and renditions, here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4333494#4333494
Below is a continuation of our DPS discovery process. At the same time we are exploring HTML5/CSS3/Javascript development with Baker. Although we've developed our own webapps, run everything in Amazon's cloud (ec2, s3) and have a development team familiar with everything needed to get a book app out via HTML, we are giving DPS a fair shot because we've invested so much money in Adobe's software and we'd rather our production team handle book apps instead of our development team.
With all of that said as a backdrop, we presented an interested client with the option of publishing two single-issue apps (iPad 1/2 and iPad 3) or publishing one multi-issue app.
Pricing wise, we kept our design fees the same with either option. The only pricing difference was $395x2 for the single-issue app route vs. a monthly charge to help us offset Adobe's monthly charge for the multi-issue app.
The questions from the client and answers from us went like this, in roughly this order:
Q: With the single-issue app, we don't pay an ongoing monthly fee?
    A: Correct. It's just the up-front per-app fee.
Q: And in the multi-issue app arrangement, it doesn't matter how little our sales trickle in 6-9 months down the line, we're still paying the monthly fee if we want to have the app for sale at all?
    A: Yes.
Q: Does either option limit us in terms of how long the app will be available for download?
A: No. Both options allow for ongoing sales of the app. The primary difference being you pay monthly to keep the app "alive" for multi-issue apps whereas single-issue apps live indefinitely with no monthly cost.
Q: So it seems like single-issue apps are the way for us.
A: From a pricing standpoint alone, yes, because most of your app sales will occur in the first month or two and single-issue apps do not carry any monthly costs down the line. That said, single-issue apps have some serious limitations.
    Q: Like?
A: For starters, we would have to develop two apps to target iPad 1/2 and iPad 3.
Q: So the customer would have to make the choice? We are expecting the customer to get  technical and figure out which app is for their device?
A: Yes. Renditions only exist in multi-issue apps, currently.
Q: Let's suppose we can get over that because eventually we will want to develop an Android version and a Kindle Fire version and in that case we are expecting customers to know which app works on their device...
A: Let me stop you there. Single-issue apps only work for iPad.
Q: So if we go the single-issue route, we simply can't ever develop an Android or Kindle Fire app?
A: Not as a single-issue app for any other platform than iPad. If it was essential you release on other platforms, we could look into converting the single-issue app into a multi-issue app later on, although we'd be looking at that monthly charge again.
Q: Right, which simply doesn't make sense for our app because of its timely nature.
A: We agree. Let's give up developing for other platforms for now and even indefinitely and focus in on just the iPad single-issue app development.
Q: Okay. So we release two apps, one for iPad 1/2 and one for iPad 3 using single-issue apps. What if we want to update the app down the road? Do we update both apps at once?
A: Actually, with single-issue apps, you can't update the app. Once it's submitted to Apple, it's locked in once and for all. Only multi-issue apps can be updated.
Q: That's another serious issue for us. Are there any other limitations we haven't discussed?
A: There are two more limitations: 1) Single-issue apps rely on the latest version of Adobe Content Viewer approved by Apple. Currently, version 19 of Adobe's DPS tools work with the Adobe Content Viewer that's approved and live in the App Store. That means we can develop your app using v19 of Adobe's tools but will have to hold off on updating to v20. This isn't so much a real issue as a potential issue. If, for example, v20 has some killer feature you really want to have, we simply couldn't use it. 2) Single-issue apps have no analytics.
Q: With all of these limitations, we're going to have to discuss internally which way to go. What's your recommendation?
A: All things considered, we think single-issue apps is the best solution now for your app. We have no exact target sales numbers in mind, but it's almost a certainty you will sell 80% of all app sales in the first 1-2 months. Knowing you want to keep the app available indefinitely means a single-issue app is the only way to go.
After two days and a few conference calls, the client decided to move forward with two single-issue apps, although a bit begrudgingly. We didn't pull any punches and let them know we expect Adobe to spend some time refining their pricing strategy and unifying the feature set as the technology starts to grow up. At this point, the seemingly wonky pricing structure and feature parity is the cost of being on the bleeding edge.
And we are now jumping into developing the app with DPS for our client. I should say, however, we are also working quickly to come up with a viable HTML5 route for publishing to avoid Adobe's system altogether. At this point I anticipate we will move to HTML in the next 2-5 months if Adobe's pricing/features don't start to move toward what we need. If we do jump to HTML, the answer to most clients' questions will be, "we can do that; for cheap; on all devices" and so on, which is a pretty attractive thing.
This ended up being considerably longer than I had originally envisioned, but my hope is it is useful for Adobe in refining the product and helpful for other publishers just starting down the DPS path.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Alistair,
Agreed. It wouldn't be right for us to pass on Adobe DPS' entire monthly charge to one client, and we have no plans to do so. We are still fine tuning the amount we would pass on to each client.
From our perspective, we are hesitant to invest anything at all in the multi-issue route because other paths to digital publishing/apps are looking more and more attractive. If we put out a handful of DPS multi-issue apps now (say, 4-5) then jump to HTML in 3-6 months, we will have to maintain Adobe's monthly fee indefinitely for the first 4-5 apps. It's as if we are paying Adobe for the right to be locked into paying Adobe monthly. No thanks.
From the client's perspective, even if the monthly amount we pass on is minimal, simple math shows at some point monthly sales will not cover the monthly carrying cost. When that point comes is pretty crucial to figure out, but it's likely it will come in month 2 or 3, which means the client would be forced to pull the app from the app store just 2-3 months after its release.
I keep trying to find a parallel for the business model in this new book app world. What is Adobe's role if we were talking traditional book publishing?
    - The book store? No, that's the role of whichever app store the app is sold through (Apple's App Store, Android Market, etc.).
    - The distributor? Possibly, since you could consider Adobe hosting the files as a type of distribution service (although, I'd prefer to host it all myself). If Adobe is the distributor, $0.30/download seems reasonable.
    - The press? I suppose this could be argued since Adobe takes an input of files and outputs an app like a press takes an input of files and outputs a printed product. That's sorta like a press. But if that's the case, a per app fee (or even a per download fee) makes more sense than a monthly carrying cost. We don't pay our presses monthly after they've printed our books for the right to sell them.
Obviously, there's a flaw in thinking about this new world in old ways, but I'd still like to figure out exactly what Adobe's role is and why we (or our clients) would pay Adobe monthly. If, for example, Adobe's pricing scheme was something more like $400 per app created (with all features like renditions, updates, social sharing, etc.) + $0.30 per download to host the file with an option to bypass Adobe's (shaky) hosting service, we'd jump into DPS with no reservations and be publishing dozens of apps per year. Instead, we're dabbling with publishing one app and working as quickly as possible to find other solutions, which would eventually lead to converting our Adobe Create Suite based production team to an HTML/CSS/Javascript team.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Why did Word on Office 2013 REMOVE Auto Correct from Right-Click Context Menu??

    Hi Microsoft -
I normally don't rant, but this is a killer feature removal, and the reason given is for aesthetics - 'Removal of clutter" is how it's worded here:
    [Changes in Office 2013]
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178954(en-us).aspx
I copy n pasted below the operative row from the linked TechNet page as to the reason WHY this critical (and very popular feature) has been removed from Microsoft Office 2013 Word's context-menu: LESS CLUTTER
And your answer is ambiguous and doesn't solve the issue that you created to make things prettier: "Click the AutoCorrect Options button" Then what?  ADD EACH WORD MANUALLY?
Please advise ALL OF US that want this feature back how to have our commonly misspelled words fixed and added automatically to the dictionary.  If I am missing this in a major way somehow, I apologize completely and will issue a public apology via any
social media platform of your choice.  If it really is gone, and I have to manually add the entries into a buried table 6-clicks deep, then I will issue a public excoriation of this feature on as many social platforms of my choice.
    Sincerely,
    Maximus Mednick

    Modifying the feature
Auto-Correct and certain formatting tools are no longer available from the spelling error context menu.
To make Word 2013 cleaner and less cluttered, we removed AutoCorrect and certain formatting tools from the spelling error context menu. The features are still available in Word 2013 through other entry points within the Word user interface.
Less clutter in the spelling error context menu. This enables users to find popular commands more quickly. In addition, the spelling error context menu now fits better on the screen.
To change AutoCorrect options, do the following:
Choose File -> Options -> Proofing
    Choose the AutoCorrect Options button.

Microsoft used to be about allowing users to customize the OS and apps however they want. This was one reason I have always preferred Windows over Mac. There are 5 ways to do any one thing, and you can customize it to do it however you want. It's all about
user choice. Please don't go the way of Apple and force users into the way that you *think* we should do things.
    <rant>
While I whole heartedly agree with this suggestion, if you look through this blog about the design decisions that went into the 2007 ribbon:
Jensen Harris: An Office User Interface Blog -
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jensenh/archive/2008/03/12/table-of-contents.aspx
You'll see that one of the considerations of the ribbon was to ELIMINATE/REDUCE customization because it was costing large corporate customers too much time/money to support their users with 2003 customized menu/toolbars.  In other words, the ribbon
was intentionally built as a fixed design so that average user cannot change it.  The QAT was an afterthought, a sop, to allow users minimal customization.
They found that the 2007 lock down was too much of a "good thing", too much like the good old "IBM 360 green screen" (even if most people don't recognize the reference), so in 2010 they
re-introduced limited Ribbon customization within the UI.
But you still can't customize the default tabs. And to add injury to insult, if you do want to customize a default tab and go to the effort of trying to recreate the default tabs and groups
within the Ribbon UI, you'll eventually find that YOU CAN'T'! There is no way inside the UI to force the buttons to layout the same way! AHHH!
    Even in 2007,
EXPERTS have had the option of creating custom Ribbons/tabs by editing XML, but that is pretty serious programming, out of scope for 99% of users.
The "solution" to the problem was too simple. Just add an option to allow users to turn on the old menu UI.  Even if it had been buried as a registry hack, the people who really wanted it would have learned about it. Then MS could have collected statistics
on usage that would have "proved" that the menu was preferred over the ribbon.  The thing is, if the ribbon was defaulted "out of the box", over time people would eventually all switch over to it. Simply because it was the default, because MS only produced
new training material referring for the ribbon
Now, I'll concede that the ribbon really may be more "intuitive", but only for new users. For long time users the change is very jarring.
They made the same choice with Windows 8.  In the last Windows 8 consumer Preview there was a registry hack to bypass the Start Screen.  I learned about it in July or August. But MS was so sure the Start screen/metro was the only way to go they
rushed out a Windows Update to eliminate that registry entry. And it was eliminated from the RTM version.
    WHY?
Why did they remove the user's right to chose the UI that worked best for them? I don't know.
</end rant>  sorry, this is a hot button for me.
