Echo in headphones recording podcast through Skype/GarageBand

I've been following instructions for using garageband to record podcasts via Skype. I connect with the other person on Skype and then use Soundflower and Linein to shift the audio to Garageband and garageband records it fine.
The problem I am having is that I hear my own voice in my headphones as a very annoying echo. Is there a way to get rid of this? I am guessing that there is a way for me to set this up so that only the other person's voice comes back at me through my headphones, but I can't figure out how?
Thanks for the help.

I pretty much followed these instructions, although I had to modify slightly to get it to actually work on my computer.

  • Skype podcast through Garageband?

I'm just wondering if it's possible to record my Skype podcast through Garageband's podcast feature.

Not directly - use a software like Audio Hijack to capture Skype's sound and import it into GB.

  • Recording podcast skype/phone interviews

    Hello,
I have been doing a podcast for a few years now and, up to this point, all my interviews have been recorded in studio.  I would like to venture out and do phone interviews with guests.  I have searched on the internet and there seems to be a LOT of options.
It looks like going through Skype is the best way to go.  Is that true?  Also, I wanted to see what you would recommend as far as recording software goes. I would prefer it to be 1) easy to use 2) for the guest to have the option to be on skype, cell phone or a land line 3) compatible with a PC and Audacity
Thanks in advance for your help!

Skype can work: it can also be problematic; but I've never tried doing this, and though I have handled a lot of telephone and landline interviews it was using professional broadcast equipment (very expensive). So I can't give you much help on mixers and the like. The best place to ask, oddly enough, would be in the GarageBand forum. There are  number of people there with experience of 'semi-professional' and domestic equipment.
I would, however, suggest avoiding cell phones; the results tend to be very poor. There are programs which will record off Skype, which would probably be your easiest option.

  • Recording Microphone through headphone jack?

    Simple question:
Can I record audio through the headphone jack on my laptop with this microphone?:
    http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-20-Unidirectional-Microphone/dp/B00005T39P/ ref=dpreturn2?ie=UTF8&n=172282&s=electronics
If not, how do you connect this microphone to your computer to record?
    Thanks!

Certainly not through the headphone port!
There's a separate audio line-in, but it's 'true' line-in, meaning it expects line-level (i.e. pre-amplified) input. So, you'd need a powered mic, or instead you might consider a USB mic.

  • Podcasting with skype, ichat and garage band at the same time

    Hi,
so here is my problem I have a podcast show and I record one of my hosts through i chat into garage band and the other is a phone guest through skype.....everything is going through an alesis mixer...the problem is my i chat host cannot hear the skype phone guest....what should I do??

Microphone into mixer. Output of computer into mixer. Skype and iChat routed to computer output. Skype, iChat and Garageband inputs all set to mixer output (either analogue output plugged into computer line in or using the USB connection). Turn monitoring in GB off.
Now everyone should be able to hear everyone, but the Skype and iChat contributors will also hear themselves coming back with a delay, which makes it very difficult to talk.
There is a way round this, but it involves having two separate audio-USB interfaces (which shouldn't be the same model) - they need to be able to handle both ways at the same time, and many don't. I assume that your Alesis is much the same as mine.
Microphone to mixer. Skype output and input to interface A. iChat output and input to interface B. Set GarageBand input to mixer main output as above.
Microphone channel : turn up sends to Aux A and B
Skype channel: turn up send to Aux B only
iChat channel: turn up send to Aux A only
Plug Aux A output to interface A
Plug Aux B output to interface B
You have now set up what is called 'clean feed' in the UK ('mix minus' in the USA). Skype should receive the microphone and iChat but not itself, iChat should receive the microphone and Skype but not itself. Everything should be heard by Garageband.
You may find some difficulty in getting this to work. The main sticking point is going to be that the interfaces have to work in both directions at the same time, and as I said, many don't.
Skype will handle conference calls and this would be a simpler solution!

  • How to enable Audio Track for recording podcast

I'm trying to use Garageband to create podcast in iLife '06. When I select female voice and the red record button, I get this message "No Audio Track is enabled for recording". Adding new track from the Tracks menu does not help. Can anyone help please?

Um, er, that's a Windows app. The best way to record Skype on a Mac is Ecamm's Call Recorder. Just install and you get a record button in Skype!

  • Podcast with skype

I want to record a podcast with skype.  I downloaded soundflower and linein to make this happen.  I then followed many tutorials online to make it all work together, but I haven't had any luck.  Thoughts?

You can't use two USB mics at the same time for multi-tracking.
This is what you need to do:
Pick up a USB or Firewire audio interface (or mixer) with multiple standard mic inputs. You will need new mics as well.
    *Audio Hijack Pro:*
    *Application Component I/O:*
Add Skype as an Application Component
Access the Input tab. Set Source type to Application/Skype
    Access the Advanced tab
Select Hijack all audio streams (MegaMix)
Play outputs through Left Channel (the mic mix)
Play inputs through Right channel (the Skype input)
    *Recording Configuration*
    Access the Recording Tab
Select the "for burning to CD (AIFF) file format, 16 Bit, Stereo
You may also select a Custom file format
    *Mac Configuration*
Set your USB or Firewire interface as the Input/Output device in the Mac OSX System Preferences/Audio
To begin a session, launch Audio Hijack Pro. Select Skype as your application and press the Hijack Button. This will act as an Application Launcher. Skype will run and will be prepared for recording.
This will result in a two channel (stereo file) with the mic mix on one channel and Skype on the second channel. Bring this file into Soundtrack Pro for post.

  • Sounds On PC Play Through Skype

I've been having a problem for the last while where any sound played on my PC will echo through Skype, as if it's being played right in front of my mic. Both myself and a friend suffer from this problem, I'm running a soundcard and he isn't, however. I've eliminated the possibility of the sound leaking through the headset's speakers and getting picked up by the mic because the quietest sounds will echo. I've tried everything I can think of and I can't seem to fix it. Hopefully someone out there has had and fixed this problem, thanks!
    Windows 7 Home Prem 64-bit
    Creative Soundblaster Z (Sound card)
    Steelseries Siberia V2 (headset)

After transferring my daughter from one iPad to another we had a similar problem.  Speakers wouldn't work, earbuds didn't work, nothing.  We tried streaming to our Apple TV and that worked but the speakers and headphones still wouldn't.  I checked all the settings (mute, volume, system sounds, bluetooth, etc.)  Eveything set correctly but no sound.
Ultimately I paired with a set of bluetooth headphones.  Those worked and after I switched back everything (internal speakers, earbuds) worked!
My theory is that since my daughter had used bluetooth headphones on her iPad before the transfer some setting must not have transferred correctly.  She hadn't used the her old headphones in quite a while and they didn't show up in bluetooth settings.  I even tried it with bluetooth off before pairing and finally fixing the problem.

  • Single black frame in enhanced podcast rendered in GarageBand.

When a podcast created in Garageband is exported or shared with itunes, the resultant  .mov and .m4a are jpeg w/aac and will have occasional black frame at a chapter marker.
The chapters  are created by droping  images into the podcast track. These tiff images created from grab captures of screen shots. The audio is an mp3.
Anybody have any suggestions or ideas of cause?
    OS and iLife are uptodate.

Hi there, thanks for your advices. Unfortunately, none of them worked out.
The problem must be at some point where the screenpast part gets rendered out of Premiere. I recorded the screencast in Camtasia, rendered it out as an MP4 with H.264, imported the clip to Premiere, editetd everything together with other footage, and when exporting it out of Premiere (no matter what format), it all got messed up.
So I did the screencast again, the settings where the same and "suddenly" (well, after hours of swearing and rendering) the black frame was gone after the Premiere render. Still don't know what the actual problem was. Just hope it doesn't happen again because it's such a waste of time with all the rendering.

yes, plug the console into the line-IN on the mac and set up GB:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#recordlinein
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
however GB would not be my recommended choice, especiall if the recording is to be unattended. if GB throws a modal error dialog it will cease recording; an audio editor is often a better choice:

  • HT5225 what to do with podcasts created with GarageBand

With Apple doing away with hosting my podcasts created with GarageBand, will I be able to submit future podcasts that will appear in iTunes?

GarageBand wil make the actual recording of your podcast, together with chapter markers and images if you want an 'enhanced' audio podcast. It will not make the feed. It's designed to work directly with iWeb, which itself can post to any hosting service; but the file you save out of GarageBand can be used with any podcast creation program or service.
However you need to distinguish between the different types of image. The images that GarageBand adds to the file are visible when you subscribe to the feed in iTunes as they are actually embedded in the media file. The image which appears on the Store page, and the data such as categories, subtitles and so on, is all in the feed and GarageBand does not and never has provided these. If you work with iWeb you can add those details there to produce the feed, or other methods will provide places you can enter the data.
In your own interests, when you have a question please start a new thread rather than tacking on to an old one - this one is months old and indeed the OP's problem is not the same as yours. Questions about GarageBand itself are best asked in the GarageBand forum, and about podcasting in the Producing Podcast forum - you're in the iCloud forum and iCloud has nothing to do with this as it does not offfer website hosting.

  • RECORDING AUDIO through ROLAND FANTOM G8 on LOGIC PRO

Guys, I have been struggling for days, with such a ridiculously simple issue. I need to be able to record audio through my mic which is connected through my Roland Fantom G8 on one audio track in Logic, while simultaneously hearing the beat on another audio track through my computer's built-in output. Garageband does this automatically.
When I set the core audio input to the Roland Fantom, I can record just fine, but then I cannot hear the beat play through the computer's output. If I set the core audio input to built-in input, then I can hear the beat through the computer, but Logic does not detect my mic.
The program detects the Roland without me setting the core audio input to Roland Fantom, as I can record sounds on a midi track while simultaneously hearing the beat on an audio track. So why can I not record my vocals through the Roland on one audio track and simultaneously hear the beat on another audio track through the computer's output?
Somebody please let me know ASAP because I need to get this album of mine under way. It would be GREATLY appreciated.

It's quite common - people who are used to using entry-level tools don't necessarily realise that the software is designed to do a certain amount of hand-holding.
When moving to a professional program, people somehow think that the new program will do everything the entry-level one did and more, but everything will be even easier.
However, professional software is designed specifically to not do any hand-holding. It's assumed that people using professional software have a certain amount of skills. The software is designed to help them realise what they want, rather than constrain them in "easy-mode".
In short, it doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't tell you when to go to bed, and it won't look all dissapproving when you turn up the following morning with a hangover and half your clothes missing.
The trouble with having the pro stuff so accessible is a lot of people who are really at the level of using entry-level programs are using the pro stuff simply because they can - and then they get frustrated because these programs require some knowledge to use effectively.
Sit someone in front of Maya or After Effects (as an example) who has very little knowledge or experience, and they won't get far. And the software is not going to try to educate them.
And we see this with Logic Pro 8 like never before, as a lot of new users have come on board, whether because the price point or value is so attractive, or because LP8 is accessible in a way LP7 and before wasn't.
(Note, this is a general thing, not necessarily applied to the OP here...)

  • How to play podcasts through car?

Now that they've moved podcasts out of the iTunes module, I can no longer set up a playlist through iTunes.   I discovered this morning that I also cannot play podcasts through my car iPod system.   Anyone have a fix for this?

I have a 1/8 to 1/8 jack for a car stereo and an 'AUX' location. The cord works fine for my iPod, but won't work with my iPhone. In addition, my non-Apple headphones won't work on the iPhone, but they will on the classic iPod.
    Any thoughts on this?
Do you have an original iPhone or a 3G model?
On the original model only the Apple headphones can be fully inserted into the headphone port unless you use an adaptor, that may be your problem.
