Edit In Place but use Edit Proxies possible?

Hi all,
Trying to figure out if the above is possible.
Reason being Orig media is either uncompressed or prores 444 or Red.
Over Gig-E the Prores edit proxies are fine to be edit in place so no need to cache every time.
Is this possible?

Yes. You'll want to reshare the edit proxy device read only, via AFP or NFS.
There are caveats - editing over ethernet cannot guarantee bandwidth and latency in the same way as fibre or direct of disk, so there might be occasional dropped frames. But for the purposes of editing with the proxies, this is not so much of a big deal - you'll be conforming with the hi-res media at a later point.
Depending on how many clients and streams per client would be using this, you'd need to have a think about the backend infrastructure. I've got a setup where I have the edit proxies device on an XSan and a dedicated XServe resharing the device as AFP (read only). That keeps the AFP I/O off the final cut server machine.
You can also do things like get a 4 port ethernet card and bond the network interfaces to give you more bandwidth from the xserve to the switch.

Hi,
I have my media stored on a SAN. The assets are there and media & Library devices, are set to edit-in-place URI's file://localhost/Volumes/Fibre 1/IDTV YV/Final Cut Server/Media resp. /Library. But on dragging an asset to Final Cut Pro I still get the "you need to cache" prompt.
What else do I have to do? Am I missing something?

Problem solved. Turned out the specific asset was corrupt!

Want to use my iPad (4th gen) to edit a movie using iMovie - easy enough if the movie file is on the iPad - but what if it's too large - can I keep the source file on a USB stick or external USB hard drive and edit from there? How can you do this?

You can't export any type of file using the camera connection kit, so a USB flash drive or SD card won't work.
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

Cell is not editable when doubleclickd but can edit when traversed by keybo

I could able to edit the particular field in a table when traversed through keyboard but could not able to edit it when i doubleclick on it.

Edit in place documents not working in beehive team collaboration w/IE

I know the Chrome,Firefox browsers don't have an edit-in-place, but IE is supposed to map the network drive via webdav and uses this as a back channel to save the changes on saving the document.
This was working very well on my old laptop using a 32 bit windows, and an older IE platform. probably 95% of the time.
Since my upgrade to Windows 7, 64-bit, IE 8.0.7601, it works about 20% of the time. Very unreliable. Does anyone know what can be done to get this to work more consistently?

After much testing, I realized that on the FCSr machine that it indeed had edit-in-place status because of the storage directly attached to it. BUT the other client computers did not.
So basically, since we don't have the $1000 a seat for XSAN and we are only cutting DV and DVCPRO HD...
We could configure our Mac Pro Server to be an AFP share over the network; it's plenty fast over Ethernet since it's aggregated over 6 gigabit ports to a switch and has PCIe RAID storage attached. We could give this edit-in-place status IF...
We used another machine (server class) to install FCSr on.
This would work right?

Having built a very fast network to make use of 'Edit In Place' we are surprised to see that Edit in place does not appear to support versioning? i.e we want to drag out a project, work on it and then drag it back into FCserver, where a new version is created. Any thoughts?
There only seem to be hints in the manuals about using EIP, contradicted each time by the statement that 'Checking in and out' is the best way to use FCserver...

I've been messing about this morning and all my problems (touch wood) seem to be resolved after your last comment.
You may remember replying to my thread a while back about metadata... Even that seems to be fixed now!
I think I should outline my workflow - it may help anyone reading!
Firstly, I have changed my compressor cluster to a custom one. I was having problems using 'this computer' cluster; freezing transcodes and i think it was screwing with my Log and Transfer metadata too. Anyway, it tells you how to change it to a custom cluster in the setup guide - takes two minutes. I recommend it, even if you only ever use the admin user to use FCServer like we do.
Ok, the workflow:
-Create a new (filesystem) device with an Edit In Place path using the java client app (not the server pref pane). call it XXX_JOB for example. remember to create a folder in your storage/raid/san first!
Local Directory:
/Volumes/Data/FCSvrDevices/XXXJOB
Macintosh edit-in-place:
file://localhost/Volumes/FCSvrDevices/XXXJOB
(nb: our server has a RAID called 'data', it's share is a mounted as a volume on the local machine called 'FCSvr_Devices')
-Create a production scan for the device - set it off - make sure it is setup to read the correct directory levels for its production name and metadata name. in my experience this takes some fiddling! the workflow example book regarding this setting features a few misprints too!
-In this order; open FCP on the local machine, set the capture scratch to the XXX_JOB device you just made (our devices are on a server volume mounted locally - v.important for EIP to work). Save the project with the exact name you want the production to be - XXX_JOB.fcp. Open log and transfer, add your metadata and set it off. when it is done save your project and close FCP.
Check locally in finder that as a result of changing your scratch you have something like:
FCSvrDevices/XXXJOB/capture scratch/XXXjob/mvixxx.mov
(Where FCSvr_Devices is your storage device/raid/san, XXX_JOB is the new device and mvi_xxx.mov is a file from L&T.)
-If all is well you should soon after have a new production folder called 'XXX_JOB' in FCServer. If you double click this you should see all the files you ingested using L&T. You may now upload your local FCP project to this production. If your Edit In Place has worked properly then you will not duplicate your original media. We do this because we don't want to have any extraneous copies or have to take any unnecessary steps in deleting them.
-When you check this project out you will get a pop up asking you if you want to use original or proxy media. since we are editing in place it doesn't matter. hit 'check out' and only the FCP project will come down. you can now edit away, adding more media as you go from any EIP enabled device - we've found it even works using finder (allowing the use of finder's cool spacebar preview that FCServer doesn't have!). When you check back in FCServer doesnt duplicate any media. you just get a nice new version of your project and no uploading or caching! you can view the assets used in the project by double clicking to 'enter' the project.
This seems to work perfectly now. If anyone has any thoughts as to if this is the best way of doing it i would be interested to know.

Screen is stuck in edit mode, but no edit capacity ...

Any ideas on how to force adobe out of edit model.. In documents screen, shows edit, allows ticking, but no editing. Will not load from document list. Will load from search list or recents... Ideas?

Try two things, and see if either of them fixes the problem:
(1) Force quit Adobe Reader: Click the Home button to return to the Home screen. Double-click the Home button to see the list of recent apps. Click and hold over Adobe Reader until you see a red "delete" icon. Press again to delete Reader from memory. Relaunch Reader.
(2) Reset your iPad: Hold down the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time. Keep them down through the "Slide to shut down..." message until you see the Apple icon, then let go. The iPad will reset. Relaunch Reader.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
3. Go to
Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.

I'm using google sites for some of my low price costumers, and i was wondering what options exsist to use dreamveaver to update some of the gadgets like the text gadget.
I know google does not support connecting fully with deamweaver or any other editor for that matter, but are there any plans for doing this in the furture, and what minot things can be doen at the moment ?

To answer your specific question "Is it possible to edit a google site using dreamweaver" the answer is NO. The reason is that Google does not allow uploading of web pagesusing any means such as FTP. Google provies hundreds of templates to choose from and like you I don't like them at all.
Microsoft had a free service long time ago that allowed you to upload your own pages but this has been stopped for new customers. New customers are required to sign up to their Office 365 Service <http://tinyurl.com/bucc6t4> and this costs money. However, you can build and host a website with a custom domain for your business.using their free software called Microsoft Sharepoint Designer 2010 <http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=16573>. I believe they also have a 64 bit version to download but I only use 32 bit on my 64 bit systems!!

Acrobat Pro 8, PDF security: Is it possible to allow printing, but forbid editing?

Hello everybody! I have a question concerning the PDF security settings. We are using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 (CS3) on an Mac OS X 10.4.11 system.
When creating a PDF, is it possible to...
...permit printing AND enable reading aids BUT forbid editing (like copying text)?
Or can I only either permit all OR forbid all?

Okay, I solved it myself. :-)
I had set the "PDF compatability" to "1.4". This removes the a.m. option. So now, I have set it to "1.5" (or even another later standard), and can now allow printing AND allow reading aids BUT forbid copying text.

Is it OK to reply to my own question?? Thanks to the related posts that appeared AFTER I'd made the post above, I learnt about the 'Manage my places' item under the Windows menu. I felt a bit dumb not knowing this.
BUT it doesn't completely resolve the issue. The info shown in the EXIF (using opt-cmd-I) under Places has the place name I choose, but it is followed by a few other lines that are incorrect and do not seem to be anything to do with any data I can see under 'Manage my places'.
Can anyone explain where these other entries might come from, and how to edit them?

Yes. A couple of ways that might work.
First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence. Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c). Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted. Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort. That should maek things work. What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence. That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline. You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

Both Pages have the same file extension .pages and there is no certainty as to which version opens them when you double click on a file.
right click on the file and choose which version you want to open it
4. Pages '09 can not open Pages 5 files
Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files, and will convert and change Pages '09 and Word files.
It will also auto save opened files into its own format.
You can export these back to Pages '09 if you need to:
Menu > File > Export > Pages '09
5. Yes Pages 5.2.2 is a marked downgrade
Pages 5.2.2 has a few improvements but has had over 110 features removed and is buggy.
Sooner or later you will not be able to open a file or have it damaged in some way and it has a complex obscure file format largely incompatible with everything else, so you will not be able to rescue the contents of your file. If Pages or some third party server/eMail don't trash your file, eventually Apple will do it for you as it did when it released Pages 5 last September. I recommend using Pages '09 for the time being whilst you look for viable alternatives, some are here already and some are on the way.

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera. Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.
