Edit original in it's native format

This is a quickie, I am sure.... How do I adjust it so that when I choose to "edit original" in the links panel, it opens the link it it's native format instead of preview?

On the Mac, InDesign will open the file in whatever application the Finder would use to open it. You can set the application by selecting an image of the same type in the Finder, opening a "Get Info" window on it, selecting your desired app from the "Open With" popup menu, and finally pressing the "Change All..." button right below that. For some reason, the Finder periodically loses its mind about these associations, and has to be reminded.
In InDesign CS4, there is an "Open With..." menu item right below "Edit Original" which permits you to chose the editing app on an image by image basis.

• How to split a file by using Native Format Builder?

Hi all,
Please help me with this issue.
In this project we need to split a file to save in the db.
Following is the sample code and I would like to split this from 'BOH--------------' to 'BOT---------------' (as in BOLD)
But as you can see sometimes 'BOT' line comes up multiple times so I need to skip few 'BOT's until I meet new 'BOH' line.
I guess I have to use complex type in Native Format Builder, but I'm not sure how to..
Please help me with this situation.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Firstly please ensure that the file that you are reading is bound to have a format of some sort.
I will relate this to one of the requirement we did it in previous projects.
We have a requirement to read a csv file coming in:
1) It will be having records for Header (ODH) and Detail (ODL)
2) The Header and Detail records will be repeated 'N' number of times in the input file.
The schema we used it something as below to poll the CSV file:
<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:nxsd="http://xmlns.oracle.com/pcbpel/nxsd"
xmlns:tns="http://TargetNamespace.com/ReadCSV" targetNamespace="http://TargetNamespace.com/ReadCSV"
elementFormDefault="qualified" attributeFormDefault="unqualified" nxsd:parseBom="true"
nxsd:version="NXSD" nxsd:stream="chars" nxsd:encoding="US-ASCII">
<xsd:element name="Package">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:choice minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded" nxsd:choiceCondition="terminated" nxsd:terminatedBy=",">
<xsd:element name="Header" nxsd:conditionValue="BOH">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="RecordAction" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="VisitType" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="OrderAction" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="Route" type="xsd:int" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="${eol}" nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>
<xsd:element name="Lines" nxsd:conditionValue="BOD">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="RecordAction" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="OrderCode" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="ShippingUnitNumber" type="xsd:int" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="," nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
<xsd:element name="ProdOptDesc" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" nxsd:style="terminated"
nxsd:terminatedBy="${eol}" nxsd:quotedBy="""/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>
</xsd:choice>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>
</xsd:schema>
So the approach we followed is as below:
1) Design two DB tables. One to put the header records in Header table
2) Put the detail records in Trailer table.
3) Poll from these two tables to trigger next business requirements.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Deepak.

• Edit original with hard link

Hi
I re install adobe with a new graphic card after problem related to extended but not in the default path .
In dreamweaver CS6 when insert a smartobject psd file and useright clcik contextual menu for select "edit original with " ( to have acces to original psd not the image use in html page ) .
Dreamweaver show me "unable to launch ... Photoshop.exe " .
I can choose browse to the the real photohsop.exe location but my choice is not save !!
1) why adobe developper use static hard link when implemented this functionnalities ?
2) is there a way to set a custom path to photoshop in the DW setting ?
3) DW is higly customizable , does this issue is documented in adobe documentation ?
4) smart object is limited if we have acces only to the whole psd view not part of it like directory or specific layer !!
5) i hope this value is not store in binary file ( dll ) but rather in text format ( file or in registry ) and thus it can be edit easely !

• Question about Edit Original feature

If I place a jpg image in Illustrator, then click Edit Original, it opens the image in Windows Photo Gallery, which of course does me no good at all. I'm trying to find a setting somewhere that will open the photo in Photoshop, since I want to edit it. This seems like a no-brainer to me and should be the default, so how can I do this? I don't want to have to go through the extra step in Photoshop to open a jpg, save as a psd, etc.
I use this feature in Corel Graphics Suite all the time, and it will automatically open a jpg in Photo Paint, so that it can be edited, and I need this feature in Illustrator.
Thanks!

this works similar in windows as it does on a Mac on the Windows platform you find anywhere on your mounted hard drives a jpeg file right click and choose Properties in the properties panel there is the option to open the file in a specific application and another option to make this so for all similar files of this format.
Once you have made this change all your files of this format will open in the application you have chosen. If you choose photoshop al jpegs will open in Photoshop even from the edit original.

• Livetrace - edit original in links

Hi, I want to use the "edit original" function inside illustrator, so my picture will open
in photoshop, and the changes I make there will be saved in Illustrator. But when I choose edit original
, it opens paint - how do I change this? And yes I have checked the link-box when selecting the image. I have windows 7 if
it matters.

its simple select file type extension for e.g you are working on jpg or tiff format if your file is tiff just select tiff click on it then right click then open with option there is chose program and then in drop down list select photoshop and remember tick mark on always use the selected program to open the kind of file
finished
just in illustrator alt+double click will open file in photoshop as a link
The Op wrote they did not aways wan the images to open in photoshop.
But You are close.
before working with the file click on the icon and go to the properties as indicated before and select the photoshop as the default application to open the file in.
But do not mark it to open all similar files leave that unchecked.
Now the place it in Illustrator and then when you go to edit it will open in Photoshop, inconvenient yes, but the only way I know you have to remember to change the default launch app back to the original app.

• Native format and MPEG-4 project

The recent topic called "native format" was flagged as answered so I thought I'd better start a new thread but it really follows on from it...
If I choose MPEG-4 format when I open up a new project does iMovie actually convert MPEG-4 into DV? That seems counter intuitive to say the least.
This is my situation: I have a Miglia "Evolution TV" which is a hardware encoder taking in analogue video and outputting in real time either to MPEG-2 or MPEG-4. I thought it would be a smart move to convert my VHS tapes into MPEG-4 which I can edit in iMovie and play back on the iMac. If I want to watch it on DVD I can always burn a DVD and take the hit on the lengthy conversion process if I need to.
The snag is that the output from the Miglia device is MPEG-4 but still takes an age to be imported into iMovie.
Is there a "flavour" of MPEG-4 that will import into iMovie without conversion or at least very quickly?

I have found out the answer to my question:
In order to import MPEG-4 movies into an iMovie HD MPEG-4 project it must be 640 x 480 otherwise it gets transcoded.
If you are using MigliaTV you must turn off the "Overscan" mode in the on-screen menu and then the following formats will be 640 x 480: iMovie HD, Apple TV. (iPod Best is 640 x 480 whatever the Overscan setting)
This applies to the version of iMovie running on Tiger I don't know if later versions are different.

• My Cannon HF 100 native format is 50i but when iMovie loads it up it says the it is at 30 fps - for PAL 25fps 50 i would be ideal one would hav ethought - any experts out there. movies in NSTC seem to be without the interference patterns (jiggling leaves)

my canon HF50 is set to a native 50i frame rate. When I load it into iMovie from the chip iMovie says it is at 30 fps. Interestingly editing it int NSTC (american TV format) I do not seem to get the horrible interference patterns (twitching leaves, vibrating paralell lines that I have with doing the same clips as PAL, )the british format).

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

• How can I get back the "edit original" option in InDesign CS2?

I am using InDesign CS2 version 4.0 on a new windows 7 pc.
On my previous pc (windows xp) I could open an ID document, right click on an image, select "edit original" and it would open up in Photoshop for editing. Very handy.
Now that option is just not there on the drop down. The pencil in the links menu and the option under the edit menu are both greyed out.I can't find any way of accessing the option which is really important for my workflow.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Sarah

Opening the document on a different computer is a meaningless test for something like this.
The link could well be present there and not on your computer.
As for XP mode, the less I say about it the better.

Thanks.

Your transformation with for-each look is incorrect.
This is what you have right now:
<ns1:AppointmentRequestsLog>
<xsl:for-each select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest">
<ns1:AppointmentRequest>
<ns1:C1>
<xsl:value-of select="xp20:current-date()"/>
</ns1:C1>
<ns1:C2>
<xsl:value-of select='substring-before("doctor1234_20120926_helloworld","_")'/>
</ns1:C2>
<ns1:C3>
<xsl:value-of select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest/imp1:C2"/>
</ns1:C3>This is the correct way to write for-each within XSLT:
<ns1:AppointmentRequestsLog>
<xsl:for-each select="/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequestRoot/imp1:doctorAppointmentRequest">
<ns1:AppointmentRequest>
<ns1:C1>
<xsl:value-of select="xp20:current-date()"/>
</ns1:C1>
<ns1:C2>
<xsl:value-of select='substring-before("doctor1234_20120926_helloworld","_")'/>
</ns1:C2>
<ns1:C3>
<xsl:value-of select="imp1:C2"/>
</ns1:C3>Also, check the flow trace in the EM console for the instance which errored out and paste here the data which is being sent to the FileWrite Adapter. Also, you need to ensure that any elements which are defined as xs:int should not have empty string as values. For example in your write schema C3 has int. So you should map C3 in XSLT like following:
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="imp1:C2 and string-length(imp1:C2) > 0">
<ns1:C3>
<xsl:value-of select="imp1:C2"/>
</ns1:C3>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<ns1:C3>0</ns1:C3>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>

• Question about "Edit Edit Original", and a question about efficiency.

I have a background image that I have imported (placed) inside my Indesign document. Problem is that I can't tell how the image will look against the other Indesign layers until I actually import "place" the image. I find myself having to keep going back into photoshop to adjust the hue/saturation or use the brush tool for adjustments. I then save, and from Indesign I update the link.
Having to do this 6 or 7 times in a row until I am satisfied, seems like a huge waste of time. It just seems like it would be SO much easier and less time consuming if I could edit my image in the Indesign image. Is there a workaround?
Here is an analogy. To me it's like an artist painting, but having to run into another room to dip his brush. He rushes back to his painting only to find that he needed just a little bit more yellow added to his white...so he has to run all the way back into the paint room to dip his brush again. I'm sure there is a reason for this work method in Indesign, but I'm just a little confused with it.
Question #2: I have tried going to "Edit>Edit original" in InDesign. Problem is, that the "preview" app pops up instead of photoshop, because I like my psd's and jpgs to automatically open in preview for quick viewing purposes. I've read that the work around is to go into Bridge and change the way a program opens a certain type of image. I did this..I changed it so Photoshop and Indesign should open jpgs by default, yet still allow the osx operating system to still open them in "preview". I tried restarting Indesign to see if it was just something that required a restart to take effect. It still opens "Preview" when I go to Edit>Edit Original.

CS4 adds an edit with feature...other than that sorry, Photoshop is
where you'll need to do the editing.

• File Adapter - Native Format Builder

Dear All,
In File Adapter - Native Format Builder exists option "Number of rows to skip". But this means how many rows from beginning of file to skip,
can somebody help to define how to skip n rows from the end of file.
Thanks in advance!

There is no option available to skip rows from end. But if you know how many rows are there in the file and how many you want to skip, then you can use the option of "Number of data rows to process" and process only number of rows you want to actually process.

Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4. When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported. There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

Thank you Niel.
Yes I do have a smiley face and I've clicked on it and opened a window with lots of things in it, incuding Documents.
I've opened Documents and in it I can see the title I want to rename. When I click on it, it highlights, but I can't see where to go to change its name. If I double click it opens.

• Edit original cannot save image

Hi, have a strange problem for few days. If I edit image (PSD) in InDesign with "Edit original" command in Photoshop sometimes after editing image I get message "Could not save "C:.../......psd" because the file is already in use or was left open" when I try to save it. If I close the file in InDesign I can save the image again in PhotoShop. Happens not all of the time. I'm not working with files on server. It's just me alone...
