Editing 4k Desktop

Hi,
I just got a GH4, and I am looking for a desktop powerful enough to edit my 4k files from the GH4. I use Premier Pro CS6 and After Effects. Most projects will be downscaled and exported as 1080p, although I plan to deliver some of my work in 4k. I'm from the UK, so any links to desktops needs to be from the UK.
I have found this PC which seems quite powerful, but I'm not sure if it's enough to edit 4k files.

I am from a reseller in the UK so it would probably be wrong to link to our site from here but it does mean I have got to play with the latest hardware and the camera. We make custom systems and sell GH4s and I have been using one for some time.
On this processor you should get any a couple of layers of GH4 footage playing back in realtime. If you went to a Haswell-E system you would get about 3 on a 6 core and maybe 4 on the 8 core. The graphic card is not used for playback but is used for effects and re-scaling so getting a 970 or 980 is good. I agree that the 970 would be good enough; get the 980 if you are think of using other GPU intensive programs like Resolve. I have been editing with 16GB RAM and that works ok. 32GB is better. There is nothing wrong with the Asus motherboard but we prefer gigabyte.
You don't have an output card in the system so to see the 4K at 4K you could get the Blackmagic Studio 4K or the UltraStudio 4K. Blackmagic have just added the ability to output 4K at 50P to the UltraStudio so you may want to consider that - although at the GH4 does not film 4K at 50P then it may not be important. The Studio 4K will let you output your GH4 footage at full quality and do HD and SD and is only about £350 +VAT. These cards are 4 lane PCIe cards and so take up quite a lot of resources in the machine, but I have had them running fine in a Haswell system like this. Getting a Haswell-e means a different motherboard and the ability to add more devices because of they way those systems work, but will add £500 ish to the cost.
In the camera I would recommend filming in MOV format for Premiere Pro. I had some issues with GH4 MP4 files in Premiere. This turned out to be setting the swap file to quite a low setting (which was because I had an SSD primary and some people recommend a small swap file). With a small swap file Premiere would crash a lot when loading GH4 MP4 files with uncompressed sound. However Premiere has never had any problems with MOV files from the GH4. Other programs have similar problems with the MP4s in my experience.

Suggestion: contacts editing in desktop software

As I have masses of contacts, I want to be able to easily get at them.
Android have lots of neat ways to make it easy to search, but my new Bb Torch does not.
Unless I'm missing something, there is no really fast way to scroll through contacts - Android gives you a fast scroll button on the screen for this.
Editing contacts is a nightmare - they are all lumped together - whether they are either email or phone, they are still in together. They may have come from different address books, ported from gmail etc.
Can't see a way to merge contacts - where one has an email and one has the phone numbers for example.
It would make life easier to have a function on the desktop manager allowing the editing, merging etc of contacts.
Also, a fast scroll button for the device itself.
If there is anything already out there that could assist, please let me know.

Hi and Welcome to the forums!
"Automated" merging of contacts is always a tricky proposition...the decisions to be made during such a merge are often beyond the ability of computer code to handle. The human brain is capable of extremely complex evaluations and decisions, with variability in the results on the fly. Computer code simply can't do such things (at least not yet!).
Further, RIM has made an intentional decision to not provide an editor as part of their Desktop Software. Rather, they provide a conduit capability to various popular desktop Organizer applications. This KB discusses those that are compatible:

Hence, the thing to do is:
1) Choose, obtain, and install a desktop organizer from the compatible apps
2) Conduct a 1-way synch from the BB to the desktop organizer
3) Reconcile the data (manually) within the desktop organizer
4) Re-synchronize to the BB and all should be well

I can't use Adobe Digital Edition on desktop 2 or 3 (not active)... it haunts me!

After installing the improved security available for today (HT5281and HT5282), Adobe Digital Edition is not kept in the desktop where I move to use, always returns to the main desktop (Number 1) or go by it self to the active desktop, is a persecution!
I use version 1.7.2 on Mac OSX 10.7.4
Anyone know how to maintain it in the desired desktop?.

N.B. do not attempt to modify the registry without backing it up first; ERUNT is a good registry backup tool. You can also create a System Restore Point, which will contain a registry backup.

Install CS6 Master edition on desktop and laptop

Can my company's IT dept install CS6 Master edition on my office desktop, and the office laptop I use when not using the office desktop?
I currently have CS5 Standard installed on my office laptop, and requested an upgrade to CS6 Master Collection for use on a spare desktop at the office - since it has more RAM. I would still like to use the CS6 on the laptop - when not using the desktop.
Most of my day involves using MS Office, Revit, Bentley Architecture and Sketchup. I use Adobe software a few times a week, and moreso when there are deadlines.
The two computers will not use Adobe simultaneously.

The Adobe product license agreement allows the primary user to install the product on a primary computer and also on a home or laptop computer for his or her use, provided that the two copies are not used simultaneously. So if a license is assigned to you, then you can install the product on your Office computer as well as your Laptop.

How to edit my desktop app details

Hello good people,
I published my desktop app in store in 2013. Now I want to change the screenshots and edit the description of the app but I can't see anywhere from the dashboard.
It says on the dashboard message 'Your account is about to be canceled' despite it saying in the subscription details that I shouldn't have to renew my account.
Please what do I do to edit the app details?

Palm TX - edits on desktop not saving

Whenever I type in any edits to entries on the Palm desktop, Calender, Contacts, and then hit OK, the edits are not kept. But if I make the changes on my handheld, and then sync, the changes are there.
I can make changes in Memos and Tasks.

What version of Palm Desktop? What OS on your computer?
If Win7, try right-clicking on the icon for Palm Desktop and choose "Run As Administrator". See if anything changes.

Have tried to install the Creative Cloud app on my PC (that runs Windows 7 Home Premium) multiple times with no success. When the application is done downloading, it completely freezes my computer and I have to restart it. Once I reboot, I sign into my Adobe account using the desktop app and it signs me right back out.

Why does Digital Edition not work in desktop mode for WIndows 8?

I have installed the most recent version of JAVA and then downloaded and installed Digital Editions. I can open Digital Editions in desktop mode but when I select a book I cannot turn the page or move to a new page by any means. The only thing that seems to work is to select a new page and then toggle between full screen and partial.

I don't think ADE uses Java at all.
I run it in desktop mode in WIndows 8 and it reads books and turns pages fine: either using the left-right arrow keys,
or clicking on the forward/back buttons each side of the scrollbar at the bottom of the page.
There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0, and even though that isn't a bug for me it may be for you.
Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

How to make editing desktop version automatically edit mobile and tablet versions

If you're using Business Catalyst & Muse you can create a content holders . Place the Module on each page, then simply update the content holder via BC Admin and all pages will be updated. If you're not using Business Catalyst then you will always need to update each layout element.

Xserve as a desktop video editing box

I have a chance to get an almost new quad core xserve as payment for some consulting. Currently I have a dual core g5.
My question is, would this be good to use as a video editing box / desktop system? I know it is way underpowered for video and I currently drive 4 monitors. Is there a video card I can get that will drive three monitors and then use the internal video for my small "email / IM" monitor? Anyone else have any good ideas? I like the idea of being on a new intel box and this otherwise has tons of ram (4gb) and processing horse-power.
I'd love any feedback or thoughts on this.

This has been asked many times in the forum - you should review those threads for the long answers but here's the short version:
Generally this is a less-than-good idea. Points to consider:
-The Xserve is loud, sometimes very loud.
-It is an awkward size and shape to be anywhere but in a rack.
-You're paying extra money to get all that computer in a 1U size and shape and geared towards 24/7 use as well as bunch of other features. If you don't need those features you are effectively wasting money.
-The Xserve is not geared towards desktop use and is less expandable than a tower.
Essentially it boils down what a machine is designed to do. Towers are designed as desktop machines and Xserves are designed to be server machines. If you get one for free then you might over-look its shortcomings if you want to use for something other than its desigend purpose - but if you're going to spend money on a machine then buy the one that is designed to do the job you're doing.

[SOLVED]Can't edit .desktop files with Gnome 3. Application disappears

I've been trying to edit the desktop file for gimp so that I can run a custom command when it loads.
Basically I want to run GTK_MODULES= gimp instead of just straight gimp, because the global menu doesn't work well with gimp and running it in this way forces gimp to use the normal menus.
As soon as I edit the file, gimp disappears from my applications menu. If I click on the .desktop file through nautilus, it says there is a problem and it cannot run the application. I'm not sure how to open a .desktop file from the terminal, so I can't look for more specific error messages.
I tried creating a script and pointing the desktop file to that instead, and I tried using GTK_MODULES= && gimp, but both give the same problem. As soon as I click save, it becomes unusable, only fixable by reinstalling gimp.
Do you think it's possible to do what I'm wanting to do?

Cannot run workbook from desktop

Disco Admin has created business areas and workbooks. Admin has also shared workbook with a user. When user tried to run workbook user is not prompted for parameters. WHen user refreshes worksheet still not prompted for paramater and user gets a blank worksheet. Basically, cannot run any shared workbook.(NOTE: do not even get msg that query returned no data).
When user tries to create a workbook by selecting items for a folder in business area, then again the same result - does not didplay any data (NOTE: do not even get msg that query returned no data).
User has select from all tables priv.
Any suggestion?
