Hi. How do I edit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
I edited it find and restarted apache and everything worked. However, when I stop web services in Server Admin and than start them again, the configuration file loses all my changes. I need to add *AddHandler jrun-handler .jsp .jws .cfm .cfml .cfc .cfr .cfswf.* to my *<IfModule mod_jrun22.c>* module. I used pico to do this. Thanks!

Stop the httpd service before you edit the httpd.conf file as Server Admin overwrites the file at shutdown/restart.

Editing httpd.conf vs. GUI, access restrictions

I'm very familiar with apache and htaccess, just not on the Mac. I've got a 10.4.7 server and I want to restrict access by IP range. I was told that I shouldn't tweak the httpd.conf by hand, rather use the GUI instead. I don't see any place to restrict by subnet in the gui config, so I'm thinking I need to do that by hand. I've also been told it doesn't use the .htaccess by default..
What's the best way to go about doing this?

In that case, edit by hand, and don't look back.
Server Admin can only handle a small subset of the options that Apache supports. It's not uncommon for large/complex setups to exceed its capacity, so getting 'under the hood' and editing the configs by hand is something that a lot of people do.
The issue is that if you later go back and use Server Admin, it has a tendency to trounce the changes you made that it doesn't recognize.
So the rule is pretty much: once you edit by hand, never go back to Server Admin.
It's been a long time since I used Server Admin for managing my sites.

Httpd.conf, php.ini, php5.conf all OK and php still not enabled

I edited httpd.conf to uncomment the line for the php module, I verified that php5 and the right info for the .php and .phps and php is still not enabled on this Mac OS 10.6.6. What else do I need to have php.

sudo apachectl graceful
This will restart the apache server.
server.example.com/~username/info.php would be the website you're looking for.
Note the tilde before the username.
If you've uncommented the php5 line in the conf file, then it should work.
Perhaps do a search for "php5" in the conf file, and make sure that you got all of them. It seems to me that there might be two lines that you need to uncomment.

How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pica won't take my password.
I can navigate to the pico prompt in terminal ... but when it asks for pw, I try to type, the cursor just blinks, doesn't move, nothing.
But if there's another way to edit this file, I'll try.
Just want to uncomment the line about php5 module.

I'm used to vi. You use control keys to navigate and make changes. It has two modes, command and insert. In command mode, to delete the '#' character, for example, move the cursor to '#' and type 'x' to delete it. Type 'i' to enter insert mode and add new text. Press 'esc' to go back to command mode.
There are numerous ways to save and quit. Usually you type 'ZZ' to save and quit. On some of these system files, their permissions are too restrictive for that. You have to do it the hard way. Type ':w!' to save. The 'w' is for "write" and the '!' is to force a write on a read-only. Then you can quit with "q!'.
I've never edited an administrative file with pico.
I can't even chmod to give myself rights to write to httpd.conf . "Operation not permitted."
Don't try that. Many tools will rightfully refuse to even launch if they detect that their administrative config files have been incorrectly modified.
internet chatter seems to suggest this 10.7.x is, like, super duper secure. And I'm new to macs. I'm logged in as admin, I have all the permissions I can find myself via finder ... but maybe there's a double-secret admin ...
There is, it is "sudo". Only an admin user has the ability to use sudo to gain root permissions.

Try running the following command from your imageserver directory:
chmod -R 755
This does a recursive chmod that gives everybody read and execute permissions, and only the owner write permissions on the imageserver tree.
For more info on chmod, you can run the following command on your Linux box:
man chmod

Failing at httpd.conf, ServerTokens edit

We're responding to an internal security audit which directs us to "Set the ServerTokens Prod directive"
We change the parameter for ServerTokens to Prod in httpd.conf per these instructions.
File Saved, stop/restart Apache services etc.
We run the following command to test: "httpd -v" but we keep getting the same output.
"Server version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix)
Server built: Nov 15 2011 15:12:57"

What you're doing wrong is the way you're testing.
httpd -v is specifically a command to Apache to report its version number. This is NOT the same thing as what it reports to clients. You WANT the local application to actually report its version, otherwise you'd have no way to tell which version you're running, or whether you need to update.
To test your PUBLIC identification, either use the Web Inspector in Safari (or other browser) to examine the HTTP headers returned by the server, or run something like:
curl -I http://localhost:80/ | grep ^Server
this will show you the Server field as presented to remote clients.

Problem With httpd.conf and mod_rewrite rules Apache 2.2

I have some RewriteRules that are working on my Leopard Client Apache 2.2 machine - but when I try to implement them on Leopard Server Apache 2.2, they don't work. I don't get any errors, they just won't execute.
Could somebody with Leopard Server help me out using the below info?

I am modifying the correct httpd.conf file on the server, it just doesn't seem to work. - If I put the rewrite rules in the <Directory /> the rewrite works but it adds /Library/WebServer/Documents to the URL.
I also tried putting the rewrite rules in <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> but that did not work either.
mod_rewrite is enabled and running on the server.
I will post the rewrite rules again in the code brackets. Sorry for the long post. - If some one can try them out on their Leopard Server to see if they can get them to work, it would be much appreciated. Again, these work on my Leopard Client but I can't get them to work on Server.

How to include processing time in the LogFormat in httpd.conf of OAS

Hi,
I want to add processing time parameter in the LogFormat of the HTTP requests in Application server logs file.
i tried to edit the httpd.conf file which orginally is as below

I want to know how do i add the Processing time attribute in the LOGFormat.
By Default the LogFormat is Common, what are the other possibilities fpr LogFormat.

1. To reduce the processing time for JMS -> IDOC scenario, try to get the Average processing time taken by JMS adapter, IE, IDOC adapter for the messages that are processed so far by going thro the Adapter Audit logs, SXMB_MONI race and Time in WE02 in R/3 system. Calculate this for 5 - 10 messages at different time to get the clear idea of which step is consuming more time. Then it will be helpful to focus on tuning that specific step. If you are using BPM, check the processing time taken by PE.
2. Check the Inbound and Outbound queues used by this interface, if required try to configure Prioritized Queue with more time allocated for this interface in Integration Engine.
3. Check the load on the Integration Server when this Interface messages are getting processed, to understand/ isolate the interfaces which are consuming more processing time and system resources.
4. If this is not in Production try to perform the Mapping/ transformation in graphical mapping itself, it will be helpful to minimise use of XSLT mapping to get better performance.
5. Check if the Archive and Delete jobs are running successfully in the Integration Server, since this will free up the occupied resources in the system.
6. If possible post seperate Forum questions for issues in different Interface scenarios, it will be easy to understand the problem for all of us.

Configuring Apache httpd.conf for Multiple Web Servers

After successfully serving a single web site from my MacMini, I'm having trouble configuring httpd.conf to add an additional site. My httpd.conf file looks something like this:

Whichever domain I put first on the list is the one that gets served, as though apache isn't able to match the ServerName and defaults to the first vhost.
Both domain1.net and domain2.us are registered through no-ip.com. Verizon, my isp, blocks port 80, so I configured AirPort Extreme to map public port 81 to private port 80. Dynamic DNS and port mapping works fine serving a single site.
Are there other lines in httpd.conf that I need to edit?

I handle it slightly differently on my Macs. I have this line:

I don't use the default /Library/WebServer/Documents folder for any of the sites on my machine. For the first web site, I use something like /Library/WebServer/dir1. So I make that change up earlier in the config file.
In your case, you'd want to add server aliases for the first one:

Httpd.conf requires Web Cache listening port to be defined - Why?

Can someone tell me why the httpd.conf file requires the Web Cache listening port in its configuration; Port=web_cache_port entry. I.e

The reason behind my question is that I thought Web Cache was a stand alone application that just passed requests through to the http server.

BTW, I managed to killed webcache a couple of times in the last 2 days by changing ports configuration using the Web admin interface at port 4000 and each time I need to reinstall ias903 core on win2k server. How stable is this beast? The EM interface is also very sensitive to editing server.xml etc directly in advanced properties...

Yes, with PHP as Apache module, a directive like:
php_admin_flag display_errors off
can or, eventually:
php_admin_value error_reporting <number>
But these shouldn't be used.

How to make/save changes to the file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - in Terminal

I'm new to Unix/Terminal and am attempting to make changes in the Apache Web server's configuation file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - so that I can use PHP locally. (The "LoadModule php4" has a "#" mark in front of it which I am attempting to remove.) This approach is suggested in the book "Dreamweaver MX 2004 with asp, coldfusion, and php." The book includes instructions on how to adjust the files using pico in Terminal. But the book doesn't explain how to work with Unix/Terminal to enable the right access permission to save the changes in Terminal. I've been able to make the changes in pico the book recommends, but I'm not able to save the changes. I'm the only user of the computer.
Please advise how to be able to save the changes. Thank you!

httpd.conf is owned by 'root'. therefore, to save your changes you need to use 'sudo' when editing the file. before you do that, you should type in
man sudo
and read about what sudo actually does. be aware that it can give you all-encompassing power to do many things - including messing things up.
once you have read about sudo, first do (substitute full paths, if necessary - e.g. /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for httpd.conf)
sudo cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.bak
to backup your httpd.conf file (in case you make an error), then do
sudo nano httpd.conf
to make your changes, then save the file.
then do
sudo apachectl configtest
to test changes to the server config (it should let you know if there is an error).
finally do
sudo apachectl graceful
to restart the server and re-read the config file.

Where's httpd.conf?

I hired someone to set up Apache, PHP and MySQL on my MacBook Pro and create a virtual host, which I could then use as a guide in creating additional virtual hosts. However, I've been unable to repeat the process.
I've been advised to forget about using Terminal, because it's too complex. So Plan B is presumably to type httpd.conf into Spotlight, then open it with a text editor and modify it.
However, Spotlight displays several files named httpd.conf, none of which appear to be the file I'm looking for; when I open them, I don't find the virtual host that has already been created. However, if I navigate to httpd.conf with Terminal, it always opens the httpd.conf file that has the virtual host.
So how can I find out where this file is located and open it with a text editor? Also, how many copies of httpd.conf should be on my computer? Is it OK to delete all of them except the one with the virtual host? I was experimenting with XAMPP (a bundled software program - Apache, PHP, MySQL), so some of them may be left over from that.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /private/etc/httpd/ as the folder's location. The copy of httpd.conf which is in this folder is the one which the Terminal accesses. The other httpd.conf files on your system should be left as is. You can use TextWrangler or a text editor which allows you to authenticate yourself to edit the file.

Virgin /etc/httpd/httpd.conf

Hi, I tried to install php5 from the entropy site. I got install errors. PWS would then hang during startup. Checked error log and it showed a problem with httpd.conf. I saw a few different versions in the /etc/httpd directory. I sudo cp-ed a few and finally found one to work (i.e. PWS is up). "View this computer’s website at http://10.0.1.7/ or your personal website at http://10.0.1.7/~rob/"
However Document root is set to the apache directory (I can see it in httpd.conf). If I enter the url indicated by the PWS preferences as the "computer's website" I get the generic apachepage. If I enter url http://10.0.1.7/~rob/" I get:
Not Found
The requested URL /~rob/ was not found on this server.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at robsmacbook.local Port 80
I guess this does not surprise me. Any idea on how to restore the virgin httpd.conf? Will archive and install do it?

Without knowing what you've done to get to the point you are at now, it's impossible to say whether rolling back the httpd.conf file will fix any of your problems, or even create new ones.
The good news is that you already have a virgin copy - Apple provide a httpd.conf.default file in /etc/httpd You can copy that file to /etc/httpd/httpd.conf to restore the default setup.
As for the speciic issues you're having, /~username/ directories require the userdir module to be enabled. Check /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for the lines:

and
<pre class=command>AddModule mod_userdir.c</pre>
and make sure they're not commented out.

It already is unformatted - it's a plain text file. The issue is that for security reasons it's owned by root, so unless you invoke TextEdit as root you cannot edit this file (TextEdit doesn't have the ability to overwrite the file).
If you want a GUI app, consider TextWrangler, a free text editor that can edit root-owned files via authentication.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The default root directory is /Library/WebServer/Documents which you can easily get to in the Finder. If you want to change that you'll need to edit the DocumentRoot and Directory directives in httpd.conf.
If you mean you want to see the /etc/httpd directory in the Finder, just use Go -> Go to Folder and enter /etc
Although normally hidden, the Finder will display this directory if you ask it. However you will probably have trouble deleting files in here since they're all owned by root.

OS/X Lion Apache userdir configs, and other httpd.conf oddities

There seems to have been quite some discussions around the userdir and other configs with Apache. I think I stumbled on the issue.
Most of the advanced configurations in httpd.conf is surrounded by
<IfDefined WEBSHARING_ON>
But, in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist file, there WEBSERVICE_ON is what's defined. I added the following to the plist file:
<string>-D</string>
<string>WEBSHARING_ON</string>
right next to the WEBSERVICE_ON flag, and all worked again.
A lot of other folks just edited the heck out of the httpd.conf file, which works, but I wonder if it screws with the automagic configuration doodads in Server.app.
Anyway, thought i'd document my solution in case anyone else googles as I did...

I've tried follwoing these instructions but I have an issue with

I'm running OSX Mountain Lion, and have verified using serveradmin status postgres that it is up and running.
