Editing in Pieces

I have been amassing material and editing sequences for a project I will be assembling later. I'll not need the individual projects or their media for this (thats why I have been editing in pieces) I want to export the individual segments as finished video files that I can assemble into the final project. What would be the optimal way to export and encode the individual segments for this purpose?
Dan

Thanks PeruBob, Bill, and John,
I appreciate your suggestions and welcoming me so kindly to this forum and am happy to be making new friends.
I can indeed keep all the media of the multiple sections, edit the sequences for individual segments, and then nest them into a bigger project as needed. Certainly.
I may end up doing that for the project I am developing.
There are instances where the segments I want to bring into the bigger project will be multi-cam shoots accomplished with multi-clip edits. These sections represent a large amount of media not all of which is present on the edited sequence but would be necessary on the source sequence from which it was synced. Ibelieve you need to keep the source sequence for a multi-clip and its components - I could be wrong - I'll check.
You do this a few times and you can be building a large project folder.
I have another series of short docs that I am producing here in town and they will have an opening and closing segment that will be the same (mostly) for each episode and I am wondering how to produce the bookends seperately and independently and use them as needed in the seperate episodes.
John Smith, I'll do a test using one of these losless codecs and see if the resultant big video file is smaller than the project folder from whence it came. This is kinda what I was wondering about. Which is a heavier pile of data - big lossless files or all the original media from a produced project.
Thanks, guys.

    Hi,
I'm editing a music video. I have my audio in the bottom of the 3 bars in iMovie. The top one is the one for the video but I don't seem to be able to get any more video footage up along side it so I can synch it up with the track. I don't want to delete too much of the original video take that I have.
Any help on this would be AMAZINGLY HELPFUL!!!

  • Questions about editing podcasts

I just got my MacBook Pro and switched over recording my podcast to GarageBand and I have a couple of questions:
    1) Is there a location where the raw audio is stored? There are sometimes where I edit a piece but then want to go back and retrieve a part of the audio I cut or does GB delete the audio as you go along?
    2) Is there a way to save a single picture/"album art" that will stay the whole time the podcast is played instead of dragging the picture to fit the length of the show in the "podcast" track or by playing the file in iTunes and dragging the picture into the album artwork space?
    3) Is there a way to put in ID3 information before exporting to mp3?
    4) Not really a GB question, but is there a way to capture audio that is playing on the mac i.e. making sound clips from a DVD, creative sound blaster cards have the "What U Hear" option, is there something similar to this on the mac?

GB's edits are non-destructive, jsut drag the edge of the region out, the audio is still there.

  • Macbook Pro or Air for minor photo editing?

I have been an andriod/windows user all my life, but getting my Iphone 5s i've found that I really love the way Apple sets up its OS and am wating try a Macbook try its OS. I do a lot of minor photoediting basic things like using the blur tool, changing the hue and satuiration, and maybe doing some selevtive color. I don't need an iMac because I still have a pretty beffy desktop but I would like a laptop to carry around when I am out getting pictures or editing at someones house. Would I be able to get away with a MBA, or will I have to at least have a MBP to run Lightroom/Apeture with a little PS/Gimp for the blur tools?
Edit: I guess I should just mention I would just be getting the base model of either seeing as this is my first Mac.

I've got a basic Macbook Air that I use for all my image editing and all my graphic design and I've had less issues with these computers then I do using a windows based machine. I find the software runs a lot smoother on here. The only issue you might come across is the screen being small. I like smaller machines, but it makes drawing/editing large pieces difficult sometimes.
Just make sure the editing programs will run properly on a mac and just chose the computer you like better.

  • I can't edit text in InCopy CS5.5

    Hi,
I wasn't very familiar with InCopy when I clicked into turning my text to InCopy, now I have to edit some pieces of the text and it will simply not allow me to make any changes, it's only on the main story (other parts of the document will allow me to check in and out of it). I've spent over 2 hours on the phone and sharing my screen with the people at Adobe and still no clue what's going on. Of course I'm on a deadline and desperate to understand how this works. Is InCopy being controlled by a plug-in? How do I modify it? I can't even open the stories that were created. Please help!!!

Most logical answer would be that for some reason your specific text was not exported as InCopt text (you have to do this for every text story you have and want to be able to edit). If you click on such a text frame, does a name get selected in the assignment and/or Links panel? If not, the text is not an InCopy text.

  • Can not stripe T/C using Edit-to-tape balck and code function

I am in Edit-to-tape mode, mastering, I have T/C enabled, I am attempting to stripe an NTSC Digibeta; I click black and code and choose the settings and then select starting T/C (00;56;00;02) and click Drop Frame, click OK when it says it will erase the tape, but when it actually starts striping the tape, it does not start at 00;56;00;02, it starts at random times that appear to be generated externally.
How do I actually stripe a tape and re-write T/C?
Sorry, this is my first time doing projects like this.

Decide whether you want drop frame or Non Drop Frame and set the switch accordingly ( switch under the flip out control panel) also verify your in record run here
Set the TC switch on the deck to "INT" and "Preset" then set the TC start time, by pressing the "hold" button. You can now set hours min sec frames by pressing the jog button and rotating the jog wheel. rotate the jog wheel without pressing the jog button to select the next pair of numbers. when you have the desired start TC press the set button. If the deck is connected to black burst and you have no SDI input feeding it, and SDI selected as the input, the deck will generate black when you press record on the deck thus beginning your stripe. Stripe past 1 hr, stop the deck and rewind a little so you're in active code, set the TC switch back to "regen" from "Preset", make your patches put the deck in remote and assemble edit your piece. If you want to do an insert, stripe the tape out about 30 seconds past your last frame.
the dbeta deck will insert or assemble. Not all decks will, some won't even assemble, only hard record. consult the deck manual when in doubt

  • Compoments to edit small datasets

Hi all. Feel free to be as basic as you like in replies, I'm new to Flex
What is the recommended way to add a bunch of data (a dozen rows or so) to a canvas that can support editing of the data?
I want to be able to edit a part of the data and trigger sending that small bit of data back to the server (via httpservice/JSON).
Initially I thought a datagrid would be the way forard but it seems the events that define when an edit starts/ends don't seem to behave as I'd expect. Also after editing a piece of data, tab or enter seems to move into the next field to edit triggering events from that field too even if don't actually edit it. These are probably issues I can over come if I understaood datagrids/flex better than I do....
Tried using TextFields and adding to canvas in a loop, creating a set of fields on each iteration, but I get an error about TextFields not being a UIComponent that can be added to a canvas in the manner I am currently trying to use ( canvas.addChild(..) ).
I can create a bunch of labels in a loop as per the textField idea, but that isn't much use for what I'm trying to acheive.
I suspect the datagrid is probably the 'proper' way to do what I'm trying to do, but I can't get my head round what seems to me a confusing array of subties I just don't know enough about.
Is the datagrid the right way to go?
Can you recommend me some reading to understand how the datagrid events should be used (it's bound to an ArrayCollection) to edit data?

DataGrid or AdvancedDataGrid seem good to me, but you'll want to get comfortable with itemEditors:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/creating_item_editors/
Not a bad start. Peter Ent also has a three-part series on itemRenderers and a companion series on itemEditors. Google those and you should find lots of ideas.

  • Key command for playing region in sample edit window... doesn't work?

I'm trying to get the play/stop key commands to behave as they did in L7. I want to use the enter and zero keys on the number pad to start and stop playback in the arrange window. I want to use the space bar ONLY to play back the selected region when I'm in the sample edit window.
(reason being when you're flying back and forth between the two windows, it's all too easy to start the transport in the arrange window, an annoyance when editing individual pieces of audio in the sample editor)
When I assign the space bar to the key command "play/stop region" in the sample edit window, it only plays the entire waveform... i.e. it doesn't play only the highlighted region. This must be a bug. If you click the little speaker icon ("prelisten") in the sample editor, it will play the selected region only, but there's no hot key for this button.
Oddly, the "windows showing audio files" play/stop key command, DOES play only the selected region in the sample edit window, but unfortunately, this key command behaves globally, so if the arrange window is selected, it stops and starts playback there too, which I don't want.
    Any ideas (besides a bugfix)?
    Thanks...
    Mitchell Sigman

    Hi,
Prelisten is defaulted to ⌥M. You can reassign any keycommand though. See p. 159 of the LP8 User Manual.

Hey all, i have been successfully converting various sound files to apple loops (full disclosure i like making sample based hip hop, a la beastie boys, etc). recently when i am editing a piece of audio, rather than importing the correct region information into apple loops browser, i will go to retrieve the sample and the tempo will be different from what was assigned and there will be dead air at the end of the loop. i'm sorry if this is unclear, but any help at all would be much appreciated. thanks.

  • Can TWO Editors Work On The SAME Project Separately ??

    Have Premier CS3 on XP
We have a heavy edit this week for a film festival.
Can one editor work on part 1 on one PC machine...and another editor work on part 2 on a mac...and then somehow... be able to transfer the mac timeline over to the PC machine for final work.
What special gottcha tricks do I need to know???
We can get both editors to use the same clip names. They will be on different drives...but the same structure...the same directories and filenames exactly on each drive. The Mac version would copy the master clips folder im thinking. Both machines...same raw materials.
Im just concerned that we may forget to do an important step... and not be able to successfully bring all the edit timeline pieces over so they point correctly.
Thanks for your critical tips and tricks
    Susan

Should work OK, as long as you're using the same media source for both platforms/projects. In other words, you need to be working with something like DV AVIs or QT DV MOVs with both. One platform will suffer because it's not as tuned to work with the other platform's media, but it's doable. You could capture the same media to each platforms native media (DV AVI on PC, QT DV MOV on Mac), but relinking once you transfer from Mac to PC will be a nightmare. If you're working with something like P2 MXF, though, this will be a breeze--just point to the proper directory and everything will be fine. This is a major benefit of PPro's native handling of such media, IMO.
You could also copy the media over, wholesale, from Mac to PC--I think this is what you're saying now that I'm reading your post again. I'm guessing that in this case, both machines would NOT be working with the same material originally, correct? Just note that you may have file system incompatibilities going from Mac to PC. Mac uses the HFS file system, whereas your PC is probably using NTFS. FAT32 is common to both systems (can be read/written on each) but you're limited in supported file sizes to less than 4GB. If you've got an HFS-formatted external drive you'd be moving to the PC, I recommend
HFS Explorer. It will allow you to mount and extract data from your HFS-formatted disc on the PC. There is also MacDrive, which is more tightly integrated with PC (disks show up as native filesystems in Explorer) but it's not free. Time might be an issue, though, and MacDrive might be the better option. There is a free limited trial, I believe.
Beyond that, just import the Mac-generated project into the PC-generated project, and relink your files. BE SURE TO DO THIS ON A COPY OF YOUR PC PROJECT, just in case the unthinkable happens. From there, the projects should be successfully merged, and you can proceed with final assembly. I would suggest keeping your additional timeline items to a minimum in the Mac project (ie. audio, graphics, titles, etc) just to eliminate possible transfer headaches. I really don't think you'll face an issue, but it could wreck your day if something goes haywire.
Finally, and most importantly, test this out if you value your sanity. This is not something you want to simply "hope" works without any sort of field trial. This should work perfectly well, but I assume to responsibility if it does not!
    Good luck...

  • Identifying which clips are used in browser

I am learning FCP for the first time but I am extremely familiar with editing video on a PC. My version of FCP is 6.0.6. I really want a way to see in the browser which clips I have used in a sequence. I know I could manually mark each take by using a label but that is a huge time waste with hundreds of clips in my program. Show duplicate frames is helpful in figuring out if I have used a shot before but I want to avoid having to ever even put the same shot into the time line.
If I have 100 shots and I have used 75, I want a fast way to see the other 25 shots in my browser so I don't waist time trying every shot to see if there are duplicated frames in my time line. And I don't want to have to manually change a label every time I edit in a shot for the first time.
Premier does this so much better.
    Thank you.

Thank you but I know how to enable "Show Duplicate Frames." I want to avoid needing to use this in the first place.
In Premier's equivalent to the browser window we have a field labeled "used" and it's checked if we have used the clip in the time line / sequence. Then I can instantly see which clips I have pulled nothing from.
Yes I could edit my piece and use the "Show Duplicate Frames" to find out I used 30 clips twice or more in a montage. I want to avoid putting the clips into the sequence it first place so I don't waste time. I also don't want to waste time editing a clip to the time line just to find out if I have used it before with the Show Duplicate Frames setting enabled. That wasts lots of time when you have a large number of clips. I don't want to try say 50 clips in the time line to find the 1 or 2 that I haven't already used.
I want to be able to see what clips are used in any sequence from within the browser so I can quickly see what's left. This is not Show Duplicate Frames. Again I understand what that setting does and it is helpful but not what I am talking about.
    Thank you,
    David

  • FCP 5 RT sequences now have to be rendered in FCP 6?

    Hi:
We upgraded from Final Cut Studio 1 to FCS 2 a week ago to upgrade Final Cut Pro to 6.0.4 to be able to read XDCAM EX clips a client sent us. That all worked fine.
But I'm encountering problems when I open older projects and sequences. Our main focus is motion graphics, which we create in After Effects, and we often render to the Animation codec for best quality. After rendering a composition we'll often go back and tweak something, then render out just those few seconds and edit the revision into the overall animation in FCP. This always worked fine in FCP 5.0 and earlier. I'd make a sequence with the same settings as the rendered Quicktimes (usually 720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) and drop those into the sequence with no problems.
Today, however, I opened up a project and a Sequence I'd created using the Animation codec, and it showed a solid red bar for the whole 7 minute animation (except for two tiny slivers of blue at the fade up and fade out.) The canvas says Unrendered when I try to play it. This same sequence played fine in FCP 5 ten days ago.
I'm not attempting to print this to tape or anything. I just want to edit the pieces together to view the whole animation realtime and output a complete Quicktime for compressing to a DVD or whatever.
As a test I made a new sequence from scratch (720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) and dropped a clip (720x480, D1 pixels, field dominance-none, Animation codec) into it and got the same result; the clip had to be rendered. I then went ahead and rendered the clip. I opened the resulting clip from the Render folder in Quicktime player, and it identified the clip as 720x480, Apple Animation Codec. So FCP compressed the clip to the same size and format it already was.
Older sequences using the Photo JPEG codec behave as normal; the sequence plays real time with no rendering required.
Was there some change in FCP 6 that prevents me from playing these Animation codec Quicktimes realtime? I'm not going to be happy if a bunch of old sequences suddenly become unplayable.
    Thanks.

Well, that is weird, but I don't seem to have that problem. I made a new sequence in FCP 6.0.4 with the above settings, added NTSC bars and exported a self-contained movie. I brought that QT back into FCP and added it back to the timeline from which it was generated, and it doesn't require rendering for playback, displaying a dark grey bar.
As I said, my main problem seems to be opening FCP 5 projects in FCP 6, though there are some minor problems with sequences created from scratch in FCP 6. In FCP 6 I reassembled the simple edit I'd done in FCP 5 and added fades at the beginning and end, which had to be rendered; the rest of the sequence showed the dark grey bar. When I scrub the timeline it scrubs very smoothly except at the beginning and end where those rendered fades are. And then, even though those fades have been rendered, when my playback gets to that fadeout it stops and gives the "One or more frames were dropped during playback" error message. I've tried the renders on two different drives, both of which are plenty fast to handle the 20-30 MB/sec data rate.
    Annoying.
Is it safe to upgrade to FCP 6.0.5?

  • Audition 5.5 Crashes when using Mac

I'm working in Adobe Audition CS5.5 on Mac OS 10.6.8.  When I bring an mp3 into Adobe Audition, do some minor edits to it, Audition crashes after I try to "save as" the file I'm working on.  This also happened in Soundbooth.  Basically, I'm working with an mp3 file, I normalize the file, edit some pieces out.  I then click "save as" to save the file, and I get the spinning disc symbol and it won't go away.  When I hit "apple, option, esc" to see the force application window, it says that Adobe Audition is "not responding".  Even after 5 minutes, it still won't respond.  Anyone have any idea what's going on????

Are you able to supply any of the additional information mentioned in this FAQ?

  • DVCPRO HD footage and FCP 5

    Hi All,
I have a client I am working with next week who has a bunch of footage that was shot with an HVX 200 Panasonic witth the P2 cards. The shooter has already captured the video (as quicktime files, I believe HD quicktime files) to an external hard drive that has firewire 400 and USB 2 inputs. So, I don't need to capture, which would be a problem b/c I don't have a capture card or HD peripherals to edit.
Anyway, I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 gig machine with 2.5 gigs of RAM and an HD 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. Will I be okay working with this footage, being that it has already been captured for me. I just need to edit some SOTs, VO's and maybe a short news package or two from these clips. I am supposed to deliver the final product as standard DVCAM for the client. My thinking is that I will edit the piece(s) and export using QT conversion, Quicktime movie with DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec, 29.97 frames and 720 x480 size. Correct??
    Any input is much appreciated!
    Scott

    There are a couple solutions.
One is wait for Apple to release the HDV 24 codec, but there is no telling when that is.
Two is to capture at the DVCPRO HD codec, but then you need the JVC HDV deck and a Kona LH capture card:
    http://www.aja.com/pdfs/AJAwhitepaperHDV.pdf
    Three...(ok, a FEW solutions)...LumiereHD or HDVxDV.
I hope Apple releases that codec soon though...

  • Half Black and White half Color Video

Is there a way to take a full color video and make half of the video black and white and the other half full color?  For instance imagine a line down the center of the video, on the left the video is black and white, on the right side it's full color.  Taking that concept if an object or person moves from the left to the right side of the screen, thus crossing that invisible line they automatically switch from black and white to color.
Almost like a video mask overlay..  How would I accomplish this in FCP?  I have FCPS  not FCPX

Why would duplicating the video onto a track above mess up the sync?
What you need to do is edit your piece first, once EVERYTHING is where it should be, THEN do the effects...
unlink your audio (shift-L), select all of your video clips, shift-option click and drag up. Select one of your clips, apply the desaturate or channel mixer effect and the crop... Now, if you do not have any other filters already applied to your clips, select your clip and press command-c to copy. select the rest of the clips that will be destaurated/cropped and right click, select paste attributes. Select filters and Crop, and viola... Tell me where the loss of sync is?
Make sure to press shift-L again so that your audio & video is linked.
