Editing TOC

My TOC (from a template)is in great shape, updating as it should etc. All I need to do is go into it and edit a couple lines. Either the whole TOC is highlighted in Blue and I can't make changes, or it is "blocked" in a blue line and I can't make chenges then either. What I want to do is minimal, why can't I do it?

Because, except for being able to change paragraph styles, the TOC isn't editable. If you want to change the text, go into your document and change the text the TOC looks at in order to build its report. Then update the TOC.

InDesign CS6 crashes when editing TOC

I have an INDD C6 file with a TOC that I created for a print book. I am now making the eBook version of the file. I saved the print book file under a new name. Please note, this is a regular InDesign file (INDD) -- not a Book file (INDB).
I am trying to edit the TOC style. I select "Layout" > "Table of Contents..." I change "Page Number" selection to "No Page Number". I click "Save Style" button. I give the style a new name. But when I click "OK" InDesign crashes. I have tried to make this simple edit countless times. I have quit out of InDesign and relaunched it. I have restarted my Mac. I even tried to manually delete the page numbers in the TOC but that caused InDesign to crash as well.
I have to have an unnumbered TOC for my eBook. Any suggestions on what to do?

And keep in mind that you can have multiple TOCs and TOC styles in the same file, so you could try making a completely new TOC.

Can't edit TOC converted to v.7 from x5

I recently upgraded to ver. 7 from x5. My project appears to
have converted properly, and my TOC displays in the compiled help
file correctly, but I cannot edit it. When I click on the Table of
Contents folder, it lists my converted toc file with "(default)"
following it. When I double-click on it, or select and right-click
Edit, nothing happens. Anyone have any ideas on how I can open
this?

I suspect the TOC is opening in a pod but not somewhere
obvious.
Try going to File > Load Default Environment.
Post back that doesn't help.

No images, not able to edit TOC

I cannot seem to change anything in the toc. no images are uploaded, no matter what i do in inspector nothing changes. not cohesive. help please!

Can I edit image size in the TOC?

Is it possible to edit the size of the image placeholder used for the TOC in CP5?
I'd like to use it for a company logo to free up some design space and keep marketing happy, but I can't make it big enough.
Unfortunately I don't have access to Flash so if there is an alternative way that would be great.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to edit the size of the image placeholder in TOC in Captivate 5. The image is scaled down to project size and displayed in the TOC.
You could please log a Feature Request for the same under https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&product=5.

Is Acrobat Pro right for us. We have an Employee Handbook that needs editing. Some is current pdf, some from an older version. Want to get all into one handbook, have the table of contents automatically adjust and link to specific pages from the ToC.

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

How can I edit an RH9 .hhc file (XML format) to include a portion of a RH8 TOC (HTML format)?

I blend output from a third-part application (Sandcastle) into an existing RH8 project. I do this by decompiling and importing the HTML, then editing the RH8 .hhc file to include the .hhc information from Sandcastle.
This worked fine until RH9 (and now RH10), where the format of the .hhc changed to XML. Can someone tell me how to approach this now? Currently, I worked around this by creating a RH8 project with the imported HTML/hhc from Sandcastle, then upgraded that project to RH9.

I decompile the CHM file produced by Sandcastle because Sandcastle output does not provide an index file (.hhc) that I can use to edit the main TOC in my RoboHelp project.
The Sandcastle HTML output files that I import into Robohelp have very intricate nesting and hyperlinking, so autogenerating a TOC in RoboHelp does not produce the desired results. Decompiling is the only way I see to obtain an index file that Robohelp will recognize and add/edit to the existing TOC.
This may be ignorance on my part, but I can't look at an HTML-based .hhc (RH8) and know how to edit it to be XML-based (RH9).

InDesign CS3 - Created ToC, now can't edit the rest of the document

I have a small document -- about 56 A5 pages, no graphics or placed files, just styled text with tables -- in which I created two new pages after the title page and created a Table of Contents for insertion in them.
I applied a new Object Style to the ToC text frames to drop them to two columns -- the rest of the document is in one column.
Now I can't access any of the document for text editing except the Table of Contents. I can select any of the text frames with the selection tools, but as soon as I go to the text tool the cursor jumps to the end of the ToC. If I try to edit it in Story Mode, only the ToC text displays.
What am I doing wrong? How do I get at the rest of my document for editing? I haven't experienced this behaviour before at all.

OK, I found out what was going on.
When I inserted the ToC, it overflowed the two pages I had alloted for it before I reset its text frames to 2 columns. As a result, it created a bunch of extra text frames on top of the existing copy.
When I reconfigured the ToC text styles to fit its two pages, those text frames were left behind, but invisible -- whenever I tried to edit text on those pages, I was actually inserting the text cursor into these invisible text frames. Once those extra frames were deleted, I could get at the underlying frames directly again.
I worked this out when I discovered that I could get the cursor into text on later pages and then page-up into the pages that had been overlaid.
I haven't yet found any way of seeing what objects are on a given page apart from just looking at it, so I don't really know how to avoid this issue in future.

CS4 InDesign Export Book for Digital Edition - Using TOC

We have been using InDesign 3, now CS4 Version 6.0.2, to create book PDFs without any issues for a few years.
Recently we tried to use the new feature "Export to Digital Edition". It works correctly as long as we do not select "Include InDesign TOC entries".
If we do select that option, then the job ends with the message "All documents are missing or failed to export". Tried different options, looked around the web for any clues, but no one seems to have come across such a condition.
In case it is relevant, we are using Vista Premium operating syste.
Any suggestion or help is welcome.

While I've used the feature, I've never used it with a TOC. You should upgrade to 6.0.3 to make sure that it wasn't fixed there.

Editing Slide Names in TOC

I'm using Cap5 with the most recent patch installed. I've added lables to my slides, yet when they appear in the TOC, they only display as "slide 1", etc. I had to do some "creative editing" with some recorded slides so the numbering is rather odd (slide 1, slide 2, slide 12, slide 22, slide 3). I was certain I'd recently seen a tip on how to edit the slide names within the TOC but for the life of me, I can't find it. Does anyone know how to change the slide titles?

Hello Krista,
I think you added the TOC before you labeled the slides, right?
Use the small button (see screenshot, highlighted) to Reset the TOC. The slide labels will replace the current default names.

How can I edit a TOC in pages?

Hello Does anyone know about editing tables of contents in iWorks, Pages?
I've created a table of contents using the TOC tool, but all the page numbers are squashed up against the titles instead of nicely aligned down the right-hand side of the page as in the demo...
Does anyone know how to fix this please?
(I've tried clicking on the table, highlighting individual words, the pages numbers etc but it won't let me edit anything other than the font in the TOC styles drawer. When selecting the whole TOC I noticed it has a a narrow blue boarder around it (ie. cutting it off down the centre of the page and confining it to the left hand-side) which seems like it might be pushing the numbers over, but I can't select the outside of the box to make it bigger. Not even sure if that's the problem though.... HELP!

You can click on the TOC and insert right hand tabs to the right of the ruler, which will fix your issue.

Edit Mini TOC style

In our project we use a specific style to present a minitoc
on a page. With Robohelp 7 we had to manually make bookmarks and
hyperlinks. The minitoc seems a perfect improvement. Well, maybe
not so perfect.
I want to use the same styles as we used in robohelp 7 in the
minitoc, but it seems that Robohelp 8 decides the font and
bulleting style for me.
Does anybody know if it is possible to link a level in the
minitoc to a style from the stylesheet?

MiniTOC style is controlled by the MiniTOC Options dialog,
which is launched on inserting/editing a MiniTOC Placeholder. To
control fonts and bulleting styles from the CSS, you may change the
properties of li, ul(For bulleted Mini TOC) and ol(For numbered
Mini TOC) as per your requirement, and just check "Use Style from
Topic" check box present in the MiniTOC options dialog.
With this check box checked most of the styling properties
will be taken from CSS itself.

How to edit slide names in TOC

Hi,
How can I edit the slide names in my TOC? Slide 1, 2, 3, etc is not very informative. I have gone into slide properties and added labels, but that has not updated the TOC slide names.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Editing the TOC

Do you know of any reported defects with the table of
contents in Robohelp 7.02?
If not, myself and two others in my group are having problems
when we expand the Table of Contents in the Project manager and
select the default TOC. When we choose Properties from the Edit
menu, Robohelp crashes.
Any workarounds?

Editing layout of TOC

Have been reading about editing the TOC but not making progress. I have created a TOC with indention below the Chapter Title. Ok so far. Now I need
an indentation for a two subsubsections (1.3.1 and 1.3.2). Am not able to figure out how to edit the TOC in style drawer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you click on the TOC you will see a new set of styles in the Styles Drawer all labelled TOC something.
When you click on one level of the TOC say TOC Heading 1 in the TOC text, you can change its fonts, tabs, indents spacing, color etc with the Toolbar, Inspectors etc.
The text is now different from the original style definition so the associated arrow next to that style turns red. Click on the red arrow and Redfine Style from Selection.
