Effects on stills

I´m trying to put black and white or sepia to some stills. It doesn´t work. Almost none of the effects work when I apply them to stills. One or two of the effects work from the stylize menu.
Anyone knows what causing this?

Hey Gunfighter
Fxfactory pro does not support all plug-ins in FCPX.  Is it possible that you are trying to use a non supported plug in?
They say ... "Final cut Pro X does not support FxPlug plug-ins natively.  At this time a limited number of FxFactory Pro plug-ins are available as effects, generators, and transitions inside Final Cut Pro X.  Certain features of these plug-ins, such as presets, are only accessible in Motion, After Effects, or previous versions of Final Cut Pro."
See here  http://www.noiseindustries.com/support/#contactus  to contact Noise Industries for clarification on your issue. I been in communication with them regarding another issue, and they replied promptly with the information I needed.
Good luck

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers

  • Using effects on still images freezing the app

New install of PP on a newly formatted MacPro running 10.8.2. When applying motion/scale effects to still images (6MB avg.) the app hangs up, beachballing. Project is not harmed after force quit - Adobe support can't figure this out.......have run diagnostics on hardware - nothing wrong, only running Premiere with assets on internal HD. Graphics card - AMD radeon HD 6770, 1024 MB
    Ideas?

but when I write the dvd (using dvd studio pro) the pans and zooms aren't smooth they tend to have little shocks every know and then, its as if they start then they can't handle the frame rate and skip a few frames.
anybody any idea about this? and how to make sure it doesn't do that anymore
Assuming the movie is free of problems before the DVD (which it may not be based on your last post) the problem you describe can be caused by too high a bit rate in the encoding.
Try encoding at a lower rate and see if that helps. In no cases should it go over 7 mbps.
Also, still images are problematic. If you are having a flickering (strobing) effect as they move, try these things (In increasing order of image degradation):
    - field order>none - you don't need fields with still images initially
    - reduce whites to 90% - this reduces overly bright areas
    - (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical>1-2 pixels - this blurs vertically only
    - (in FCP) Gaussian blur> 1-2 pixels - this blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    - deinterlace - this throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
The flickering is a result of very thin horizontal elements/elements that exist on one scanline. As the alternate fields play the one element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays.
    good luck.

  • [Solved - KDE 4.6] No desktop effects, but still have 3D render

I have an nvidia graphics card, with the nvidia binary driver installed, and everything worked smoothly, until I updated to Kde4.6 just now. After a few seconds where everything looked normal (desktop effects enabled just as before), the screen went beserk, and a popup informed me that the desktop effects were too slow, and thus have been deactivated. Without those effects, everything works fine. If I try to re-enable them in System Settings, it now tells it can't, it will revert to previous configuration, and should try to see what's wrong with my Xorg settings. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but still, here is what I think is the relevant part:

    Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I restarted X, and then was able to enable desktop effects again, and so I did. And I just discovered how to trigger the "beserkness": just press Alt-Tab repeatedly. I will show a transparent preview of the window, and then all of a sudden, it freezes for a moment, then comes back, but way way slow...

I've been able to narrow it down even further: it appears that the crash happens when the effect for window switching is box switch. I changed it to Cover Switch, and everything is working properly. I haven't tried any others, for obvious reasons, but should anyone else have the same problem, here's a hint to a possible solution. Anyway, I'm closing this, and probably submit a bug to the KDE folks...

  • Mixing photos with Ken Burns effect with 'still' photos

I am just beginning to experiment with iMovie '09. My medium is still photographs and my goal was to create a movie with these photographs, and send them to iDVD to test the quality of the final images.
    I have 3 questions.
    1. I started by using about 10 photos from iPhoto, then adding music and transitions. I used the same 10 slides, same music and transitions to make a second movie, but this time I used the Ken Burns effect on two of the photos. When I moved the movies to iDVD, the first one was fine, but in the second one, the 'jaggies' appeared in the iDVD version. Is it an 'all or none' proposition regarding the Ken Burns effect if I want to avoid images with jagged edges or is there a way to combine moving and still images?
    2. The first time I tried to send the movie to iDVD I chose Share>iDVD. A drop down window appeared and it looked as if a movie had been created but when I opened the media/movies pane in iDVD, a message appeared saying "the project can't be used because it has not been prepared for sharing yet." What was actually happening when I chose Share>iDVD?
    3. I have been reading other posts about sharing from iMovie to iDVD. Am I understanding correctly that I the largest size I can go to is 'medium'? In my experiments, I have been choosing 'large' and they look OK. (I chose 'large' because that was what was modelled in the tutorial.) Would I have trouble when it comes to burning them?

You should be able to combine.
Open iMovie Preferences and put a check mark next to "Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames". This lets you edit more accurately and if there is an extraneous Ken Burns Frame you can see it.
he first time I tried to send the movie to iDVD I chose Share>iDVD. A drop down window appeared >and it looked as if a movie had been created but when I opened the media/movies pane in iDVD, a >message appeared saying "the project can't be used because it has not been prepared for sharing >yet." Try saving your movie to either iTunes or the Media Browser first. When you send straight to iDVD it is expected DV or AIC or h.264. With photos only, none of these exist.
After sharing to the media browser or iTunes, if Share to iDVD still isn't working, you can open iDVD, find your movie in the Media Browser, and bring it into iDVD from there.
I have been reading other posts about sharing from iMovie to iDVD. Am I understanding correctly >that I the largest size I can go to is 'medium'? Both will work. DVDs are 480i, so if you send in large, iDVD has to downscale. You may want to try it both ways to see which gives you better results.

  • How to avoid Moire Effects (jiggered still pictures) using iM and iDVD.

This is a discussion going on forever and forever in this forum. I had the problem of bad looking slideshows myself, and I am hearing the same tips over and over again that just don't work. This is what I found out on how to avoid moire effects in your still images, when you want to edit a slideshow using iMovie - and I personally think, this explanation makes a lot of sense.
Try it on your own and you will have had the last bad looking still image slidehow on the TV screen ever!! Here we go:
Like everybody here I am talking about the process of creating a slideshow incuding movie strips in iMovie to get as a final result a DVD with menus and such using iDVD.
And the common problem with stills and iMovie 5.02 are the so called jiggered pictures iMovie creates. Call it a moire effect, if you'd like.
Whenever full resolution still images are importet from iPhoto into iMovie, the quality that iMovie will spit out in the end is disgusting. Period. Just disgusting.
It has nothing to do with that iMovie does not display it properly on the Monitor or we are just in preview mode - the results are bad there and will be bad (maybe even worse) on the TV screen.
There is no SIGNIFICANT difference between wether the pictures are imported with KB on or off, whether they are imported as still frames or as video clips using iMovie "import" function. iMovie can treat the color fairly bad, overprocesses the pictures and - worst of all, the moiree effects you will see in the endresult are just very very bad. It is worse when the pictures are panning a lot (KB).. This is true for every picture containing a lot of detail (Trees, Forests, horizontol lines (stairs) etc.) - not so bad for closeup face shots, unless that person is really old
There is no SIGNIFICANT difference on the result by how the iMovie project is fed into iDVD. When the movie is sent to iDVD using the iM command "send to..." the quality is worse (and you let iM render when it asks) than if the movie is dragged into the iDVD window - but again, the difference is not significant. The result will suck. The DVD will also look bad, when the iMovie is exported has high res quicktime first, before imported into iDVD. Again, its slightly better that way, but not significant.
Whenever a slideshow is created in iPhoto and than exported to iDVD (or via being a quicktime movie through iMovie into iDVD) the result will be however stunning. But that totally defeats the purpose of iMovie and the degree of freedom of designing slidehows in a very appealing manner.....
The problem I think lies in how iMovie processes still images. And this is not a bug, but more of a mathematical/programmatical problem. iMovie has to REDUCE THE RESOLUTION of your still. A 2000x3000 pixel image @ 300 dpi(roughly the dimensions of a 6 MP image) has to be downsized to a TV image (NTSC or PAL, whichever) which has a resolution of approximately 480x640. HD is accordingly higher. The amount of pixels has to be reduced. iMovie can do that. NOT GOOD. But it can. The problem starts when the picture is panning around (KB). iMovie makes a let us say 5 second movie @ 30 fps out of one still image. Almost every frame will be slightly different from the previous one due to the used KB effect. So, the routine of iMovie does this downsize calculation for each single frame - and it removes each time different pixels from the still image, due to a slightly different source still image. Got it?
Now, when you look on how moiree effects occur (which is some weired math in it's own) than it makes sense, that we see all this jiggereing in horizontol lines of high res. patterns.
I found that if I reduce the size of each image in Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) prior to importing it into iMovie, the quality of the final product that iMovie and subsequently iDVD spits out in the end is AMAZING (reduce the dpi to approx. 72, so the image resolution is roughly 480x640). This is not a difficult process, because both programms (PS and PSE) handle BATCH PROCESSING. Just let the Mac work for a couple of hours or so.... its WORTH IT (and don't forget to make copies of the high res originals beforehand... :D).
(before you resize, find out about how to properly resize and rescale an image!!!!)
I am slightly annoyed that I found that out after producing a long long long long and really good slightshow, that is watchable but looks REALLY cheasy and cheap).
    I hope this helps out.

I agree that iMovie's still image quality is embarassingly bad and has many bugs.
Even with no Ken Burns, the sharp images tend to flicker on a TV because iMovie doesn't blur them properly.
And as you very well described, iMovie's Ken Burns produces uneasy zooms/pans because the subpixel rendering is, uh, suboptimal.
iMovie's immortal rendering bug when exporting non-Ken Burns'ed images to iDVD/tape doesn't make things any better.
Yes, bicubically downsampling the input images to 640x480 or adding gaussian blur to the megapixel input images takes care of the flicker and uneasy zooms/pans, but as a side-effect the maximal zoom-ins are then TOO blurry.
The best workaround is to use Photo To Movie's higher quality export setting. It has the best quality rendering engine (I recently compared it to Still Life and FotoMagico). Disclaimer: I'm just a satisfied customer of Photo To Movie.

  • Ken Burns effects with stills

I am trying to superimpose images with Ken Burns effects.  I have one still that takes up my full frame (rectangle, 16:9).  I also have smaller photos superimposed on the first that are placed in other parts of the frame.  I can size these other images to any dimensions if I don't use effects, but as soon as I try to use Ken Burns effects on the smaller images, Final Cut is forcing the image to 16:9.  This is particularly awkard if the image is a still with portait orientation as opposed to landscape.
Any ideas what I can do?  Was not an issue with Final Cut Express.

In Image/Wireframe mode, holding down shift causes resize to be unconstrained when dragging the corners. Have you tried simply dragging the corners of the video without holding down shift? This works for me on my system, although my default method is to use the scroll wheel on my trackball to change the values for scale in the motion tab.

  • Is the Lighting Effects Filter still 32-bit in CS6?

In Photoshop CS4 and CS5, it's a real PIA to have to restart PS in 32-bit mode in order to use the Lighting Effects filter (FILTER>RENDER>LIGHTING EFFECTS). Has this been addressed in CS6? (Still looking for reasons to upgrade.) Thanks.

  • Stutter when I try to create motion effects with still images--

Can anyone help figure out the correct workflow?  I am importing jpegs into my project re-sizing them and then manually creating the "ken burns" effect on them.  And they stutter like crazy.  I've been browsing forums for the past week and can't find a solid answer that works for me.  Thanks in advance.

The images I'm testing today I re-sized in photoshop to be 1920x1080.  One of the images was originally 1280x853 and I re-sized it to 1920x1080.
For my project I am storing all the video on an external G Drive.  For the still image tests I've been running, I've tried putting them on the G Drive and also just on my internal drive.  This has not changed the result.
I've tried exporting QTs to see if they'd play back any differently and they don't.  I'm not sure what you mean by "delivery system", though.  Can you clarify?
    Thanks

  • Effect NeededL Still photo to 3D animation

    Hi Everyone,
I've recently seen two amazing applications that produce an effect that I'm trying to incorporate into an FCE 3.5 sequence. One is called motion portrait, the other is Fage Gen Modeller. Both PC apps. In essence, what they do is to take a 2d still image of a face, and let the user convincingly manage facial expressions just by mapping a few points. This is exactly what I need for a sequence I'm working on. Does anyone have any leads for a similar Mac based app? Thanks! Sorry if this is a tiny bit afield from FCE.

You probably want a morph program.
I tried MorphX (see http://www.norrkross.com/software/morphx/download.php) a free program that creates movie files that can be imported into FCE. Simple to use.

  • Easy way to do the Ken Burns effect on still photos

I remember using iMovie's Ken Burns effect with great ease. With FCE, it seems really difficult to get the effect I want using still photos. Is there a quick and easy way to do this? All I want is a) to provide a motion increasing the size, and b) increase in size and move the photo slightly to the subject. Thanks.

  • Artefacts on 'push' effect between still image & moving image

I'm trying to use a horizontal 'push' effect (like an old fashioned slide show) to introduce scanned images into a timeline (DVCProHD 1080i) but when I look at the effect transition frame by frame there's a double image as though one half of the picture is out of sync with the other. The effect works fine if I use it between two moving shots, it just crops up when going between stills (JPEGs) and moving footage. Does anyone have a solution to this please?

  • I purchased After Effects but still have limitations?

I have purchased after effects and entered a valid serial number, but I am still stuck with the trial limitations?
    Trial limitations
Due to licenses of various codecs, several formats are not supported in the trial version of After Effects CS5, limiting some of the features available in the trial. Formats not supported in the trial include AVC-Intra, AVCHD, Canon XF, HDV, and XDCAM. Also, certain formats, such as MPEG-2, MPEG-2 DVD, and MPEG-2 Blu-ray, cannot be exported from the trial version. For details, visit the Help Resource Center.
Some third-party plug-ins, such as Imagineer Systems mocha and mocha shape, Foundry Keylight, CycoreFX, Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse LE, fnord ProEXR, and Digieffects FreeForm, are not included in the trial version of After Effects.
If you decide to purchase After Effects CS5 after the trial period, support for these codecs and plug-ins will automatically be added via a simple update once you enter a valid serial number.
    The last part quotes

Well when I put my serial key in it had a green check mark, and when I go to HELP> UPDATES it says all my programs are up to date..

What specific limitations do you see in After Effects after you entered the serial number?
Are you having problems importing any files of the protected formats?  Problems exporting?
Here are a couple of things you can check to see whether or not the protected content is installed:
    * Add a comp to the Render Queue and open the Output Module settings.  Is MPEG2-DVD an available format?
    * In the Effects & Presets panel, or the Effect menu, is Synthetic Aperture > Color Finesse available?

  • 3D effect w/still photo

I've seen documentaries on TV where zooming in on a still image appears to be in 3D...with depth.  I know it can be done by dividing the image into layers (background and foreground) but can premiere elements automate this.?
    gordo

    GORDON
    Thanks for the reply.
My first impression is that the creation of an animated "zoomed in still image/with depth considerations" is a Photoshop task and not Premiere Elements (any version).
You wrote about what you are doing now and how you want to stream line the process in the name of time.
    1. creating a foreground layer and different background layers in Photoshop and then
    2. changing scale on each at different rates...but it's extremely time-consuming.
I have not tried it yet, but I think those Photoshop details can be translated into Premiere Elements workflow (substituting "tracks" for "layers" and keyframing the Scale property for each track content.). But, that would appear to be time consuming as well. But...what if you created a dummy project in which you invested the time in setting up. And, then used a copy of that dummy project each time you want the effect - replace the still with effect in the dummy using the Replace Footage option obtained by right clicking the dummy's original still in project media.
On the Photoshop side of thoughts...
To lessen the time consuming aspects of this, have you attempted to create an action for this in Photoshop. If you can create the action and produce the wanted product, does Photoshop allow you to export that as a video file (such as .mov)? In that regard, is your end result targeting using the still with effect (created now in Photoshop) in a Premiere Elements 10 video project?
Please review and consider and then let us know if we are closer to what you seek.
    Thank you.
