Eliminating Classic Altogether

Based on so many discussions here regarding the subject, I decided it was high time to install Tiger and bid farewell to OS9. I bought a retail DVD of OSX and followed the instructions. I was looking forward to erasing and installing, but that option never came up (although it was explained and illustrated in my little instruction book). So I continued the install anyway and everything worked out fine – until I saw an OS9 icon in the dock????
Okay, I get it that Intel Macs speak a new language - so no running of any OS9 apps. My machine at the office (the one I'm typing this post on right now), is an Intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.9. But my machine at home is a PowerPC G4 Dual. So am I right to assume that the old PPC paradigm allows OS9 to live alongside OSX in harmony? I've read so many posts that say running both (particularly on a machine with limited hard drive space) is nightmarish.
Back to my install. When I checked the contents of my hard drive after the Tiger install - there were all of my old apps in their folders - just like they looked when I was running OS9. The contents of the drive looked nothing like the contents of my office machine's hard drive. They looked - well, like they've always looked. I launched Quark 5 - and by golly - it ran just like before. Some people would say "great". Not me. What happens when I attempt to load new software? Will I have Photoshop CS living in one apartment while Photoshop 7 lives in another?
I want OS9 out! I don't want Classic! I want to completely and totally erase every 1 and 0 on my machine and start fresh with Tiger. Why does the Tiger installer insist on leaving my OS9 stuff alone and well and living in Classic land? Is it because I have a Fireball drive which may need a new driver? Do I have to update firmware anywhere?
Please - Mac genii - tell me I can euthanize the old OS so that the new OS may live.
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No worries. Yeah, the install disc has a minimal system on it so you can boot and run the installer. You should see the install options button though. I think it's on the final page of the installer, just before you tell it to begin the install.
You could also use disk utility to erase the drive like you said and then go ahead with a regular install. When you boot from the disc, choose your language and then when you get to the next screen look in the menus. I can't recall which menu it is but you should see disk utility in one of them.

    Hi All,
Abap program will write the IDOC information into a flat file and this flat file will be put into the same SAP R/3 App server.
XI Interface has to pick this flat file which is located in the R/3 App Server and send to the File server in the same format (i mean to say same file has to be keep into the app server) ..No mapping nothing just our XI interface has to work like a FTP which will pick the file from R/3 App server and put the same file in some other File server.
    To Achieve this..
<b>NOTE: Here in the landscape we are using J2se Plain Adpater.</b>
just now i did a simple scenario to achieve this...
i have taken two business services one for sender and the other is for receiver.
message interface and interface namespace for both i gave fake name which is same for both.
then i have created two communication Channels (one is for sender an the other is receiver) with XI adapter  as i already said we are using J2se plain adpater engine...
in receiver determination i have configured receiver determination ,sender agreement, receiver agreement (in all these i have given some fake name for both sender interface, receiver interface and namespace).
now in j2se plain adapter engine i have configured sender and receiver file adapter..
but i need a code for sender j2se file adapter to look into sap/r3 server's directory ..
if its XI file adapter we choose FTP as a file protocol and will give r/3 login details.
but in j2se file adapter how will u write the code for FTP file protocol
    Please help me ...
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Reehan

    Hi Reehan,
Why don't you use the ABAP program to send the information directly to XI via proxy, rather than have it write to a file which XI will pick up?
Currently, in your scenario, you are just using XI as an File Transfer tool. This is not recommended, not least because it is a waste of system resources. Also XI license costs are based on message volumes, so you will end up with more costs for no added value.
Alternatively, use the SAPFTP functionality in the ABAP stack to directly FTP the file out to the target system, eliminating XI altogether!

  • Why is using Places in iPhoto 11 such a hairy hassle?

Here is the feedback that I just sent to Apple:
"Why is defining a place such a hassle?  Don't bother telling me the steps -- I know them too well.  Tell me why, when I select a photo, type something in the teeny-weeny Assign a Place... dialog, then select one of the suggestions, what happens next depends on whether the selected suggestion is a custom place or one that Google found?  Tell me why, if it's the former and I move the pin around and assign it a new name, I effectively modify the place, just as if I were working in Manage my Places, whereas if it's the latter, I define a new custom place?  Tell me why, if the custom place that I define happens to overlap other custom places, the photos assigned to them will be reassigned to the new custom place?  Tell me why I can't adjust the radius of the place in the teeny-weeny Assign a Place... dialog to prevent that from happening ... by the time I do that in Manage my Places it's too late!  Tell me why, with every new version of iPhoto 11 the usability of Places just gets worse?"
Of course, I don't expect Apple to answer, but I would appreciate any hints for solving, or, at least, avoid the problems described above.  They weren't problems in the previous major version of iPhoto.
The latest patch, 9.1.3, seems to have brought new Places problems.  I assigned a photo to Martinskirchplatz in Basel.  It wasn't in My Places, so it's a place that iPhoto found through Google.  Naturally, it overlapped other custom places nearby:  Rheinsprung, Alte Universität von Basel, Basler Rathaus.  So, after adjusting the radius of Martinskirchplatz in Manage my Places to avoid overlapping them, I switched to the Places view and selected Martinskirchplatz to see all the photos that really belonged to the overlapped places but had been reassigned, and painfully assigned them back to the correct places.  Then I found a photo that I had originally assigned to Rheinsprung and reassigned it to Martinskirchplatz, since that's exactly where I had taken it.  When I exited Places, re-entered and selected Martinskirchplatz, only the photo for which I had defined that place was there, not the one that I had reassigned to it.  No matter what I did, I could not convince iPhoto to show me both photos for that place, despite the fact that, in the Info displays for both the place was correct, and it only appears once in Manage my Places.  So I decided to repair and rebuild the library, and iPhoto decided to surprise me by only retaining the places for photos taken with the iPhone (presumably because they contain the GPS coordinates).  WHO UNDERSTANDS THAT Rebuild Library from backup MEANS THAT CUSTOM PLACES WILL BE LOST?  Just what kind of backup is it that doesn't backup the places?
    Regards,
    Richard

The problem with Places is not the development, but the design, so learning how to develop (I presume you mean program) an application isn't going bring you any closer to understanding why Places doesn't "work."  In fact, Apple's refusal to address the problem of overlapping custom places indicates that this is the way it's supposed to work, but Apple provides no explanation about the underlying model, i.e., how we're supposed to think about custom places.
As nearly as I can tell, custom places are supposed to provide GPS coordinates for photos that don't already have them, or have them wrong.  Look at what happens when you import a photo from, say, the iPhone.  Provided you haven't switched off the Location facility, the photo has GPS coordinates.  And, providing you haven't switched off the option in iPhoto to place photos, iPhoto will look up the coordinates in Google Maps and get the most precise name it can.  Apple's solution to the problem of photos which don't have GPS coordinates should have been, allow the user to supply them.
Now, there's a second problem with geo-tagged photos, regardless whether they were automatically or manually tagged.  Sometimes we would like to provide a more precise area than Google Maps.  For example, Google Maps might supply just the city Basel for photos taken anywhere in Basel, whereas we might want to distinguish various areas in Basel.  This, too, has an easy solution.  Allow the user to define closed polygons, circles, etc. which constitute a level of detail finer than the finest level that Google Maps supplies.  So what if the custom areas overlap?  No problem.  The photos have coordinates, so if the coordinates of a photo put it in multiple areas, that's OK.
So far, so good.  For each problem we have an independent solution.  Now, there's a third problem that's specific to manual geo-tagging.  Maybe I don't remember or don't care where exactly on the Marktplatz in Basel I took a photo.  Why should I have to assign it to a point?  Here is where Apple apparently got too clever for its own good.  Instead of supplying a separate solution to this problem as well (e.g., by introducing the concept of an area of uncertainty around a point, or by providing a facility to assign a photo the same coordinates as another), we now have what amounts to one solution for two problems:  when you think you're defining a custom place, you're really defining a circular area and assigning the photo the coordinates of the center of the circle.  So, what's so bad about that?  First, the process of defining a new place never makes it clear that it's actually an area that is being defined.  Second, even if you're aware of this, you cannot specify the size of the area at the same time that you define it, so there's no way to prevent it from overlapping other places that you've defined.  And what is the problem with overlapping?  Since the photos are not attached to the areas to which you assign them, but only derive their implicit coordinates from the assignment.  Now, anybody could understand that, if two areas overlap sufficiently, in particular, if one overlaps the center of the the other, then the photos assigned to the two places might be displayed when the large place is viewed.  But, for some strange reason, reducing the overlap in Manage My Places, or eliminating it altogether, doesn't rectify the problem.  Instead you must reassign the "victim" photos of overlap.
The lesson here is:  Good design means a single solution to a single problem.  Three problems?  Three independent solutions!  This allows the user to do just what he wants, and to understand what he is doing.  Don't want to define an area?  Fine.  Just assign a coordinate to a photo.  Don't want to assign a coordinate, because that would imply precision, or because you don't recall exactly where?  Fine.  Just define an area of uncertainty and assign the photo to it.  As you and/or your needs develop, you can do more sophisticated things with three solutions than with a single one, and you still understand what you're doing.
Somehow I don't believe that Apple doesn't know all this.  I could imagine this is an attempt to "simplify" the UI in preparation for supporting a touch interface like that promised for Lion.  Unfortunately, the price for reducing three separate operations to a single one is semantic overload and an opaque underlying model.

  • New to Web Design/Development - Need some advice

I have decided to start doing some web work w/ a startup company a buddy is running. The site is currently set up in Expression Engine and I personally do not like the look of it. I am a creative cloud subscriber and currently use AE, PP, Photoshop etc for some design work. I just started with this and I am really enjoying it. I love Adobe products and was thinking that I could redo the site in Edge Animate, Dreamweaver and/or even Muse. The goal is to have a paid site, general content and also a member’s area w/ paid content. I have some experience in programming from my Computer Science days but it has been a long long time. I was just looking for some help to see if this is doable and possible get some help on a good approach to learning and doing this. Thanks for your time.
    Mark

Expression Engine is a content management system, somewhat like Wordpress. That means several things:
    1. The "content" of the site is stored in a database, and pulled from that database as needed
    2. That being the case, there is really ever only 1 page on the site which is given different content to display based on which navigation element you select.
    3. That being the case, the single page of the site draws its 'boilerplate' elements (header, footer, etc.) from code fragments (used as includes) that allow that page to be built from the pieces (boilerplate and content) on demand.
Doing any modifications to the "look" of the site would require that you become familiar with how EE puts all of those pieces together. It goes way beyond just HTML and CSS into the world of server scripting to achieve this functionality. As a result I'm afraid that your choices are:
Acquire the knowledge to work within the EE environment
Completely redo the site as a static (i.e., not dynamic) site thereby eliminating EE altogether
Hire someone already familiar with EE to implement a new look leaving the content and functionality in place
    Your choice.
Can you give us a link to the site so that we can get an idea of the scope of this job? It may be that EE is being used in an "overkill" fashion.
As far as "working with Expression Engine", normally you don't use something like Dreamweaver at all, rather using the built-in and online tools of the CMS for your page layout and content editing. There is a convenience to doing it this way that offsets the disadvantage of working outside of DW.

  • Problems with the forums -- Oracle personnel please escalate

I'm sure many have posted this somewhere, but in case they haven't -- the forums aren't rendering code snippets, which looks like xml, properly. In some cases, its eliminating them altogether, in others, it cuts out big chunks, in others it replaces some xml markup with smilies. The result is that its rendering tons of posts and information in them as totally useless.
If I had to guess, this is because the forums aren't rendering using rawText or something like this, but at the very least, until the problem can be totally fixed, turn off smilies. Smilies are nice, but next to code which document answers, they are unimportant.
    Thanks,
    B

    Shay,
"We did report it to the people in charge, and they asked that feedback will be posted on the feedback forum."
I understand your personal plight, and I thank you for passing on the information as you were told. But what I'm talking about is kind of big-picture stuff, pertaining to Oracle as a whole. It encompasses not only the issue of the new forums, but support of any product, be it on forums or metalink, documentation, examples, etc. The frustration coming out that I see seems to have a central theme: Oracle having a "fend for yourself" mentality to their customers.
Someone posts on the forums, can't get an answer, so they are told "these are for user communication". Then they are told "go post a tar". Then they post a tar and are sent a document they've already read. Then others have said that tars won't address how-tos. Then the JDev forums have problems, and users give feedback, and the response is "go post this somewhere else.".
This looks like continually passing the buck, propagating an internal bureaucracy to for users to have to understand how to navigate, and forcing upon your users the responsibility for facilitating communication within Oracle. I think Oracle really needs to work on putting themselves in the shoes of their customers, and change the self-centric attitude. I highly doubt that Oracle treats their customers with respect to accounts receivable with the same apparent lethargy they treat customers with respect to support.

  • Quality of embeded MOV video

    Hi There,
I have a some video as a mov format. It is saved in perfect
quality, see picture 1 pls. When i eported it to flash into my swf
project = the quality of video-pictures is VERY bad see picture 2.:
HOW can i get the quality such as in the original movie ? Thanx for
    any answer.

    original
    mov-video
certainly i try to change a bitrate.. but without any
effects. For ilustration, origial mov video has abot 4MB, flv
output has about 350KB but quality is bad. What can (must) i do to
better quality of video materials ? (eventually to get original mov
    quality), please help me :)

Thanks for the reply. I work in an educational environment, and as always, we're looking for ways to cut tape cost and/or go tapeless. I want to be able record blog videos for our website, as well as student meetings. Last year, we burned a lot of tape on content we'll never use, or want to archive, but we have plenty of HD space. We would still shoot to tape for "major student projects".
We're using two Sony HDR-FX1's and several Cannon Optura 400's (used primarily for mundane daily tasks). I've been experimenting with recording straight to my MacBook Pro and a FW drive using Quicktime Pro (creating H.264 video), then VeeScope Live (creating full DV/DVCPRO NSTC video).
My grand plan would be plugging in the camera directly to the MBP (with an external HD connected), recording into QT or VeeScope, then importing that video into FCP, eliminating tape altogether. I tried it, and had no issues with either program, other than the extra step of converting the .mov files from QT. Hence my question about the difference in quality. I like the scopes in VS - something that the students should learn to use while shooting anyway.

  • Burning Problem: does Toast interfere?

I have never been able to enjoy this DVD burner I have in my desktop G4. I've even swapped it out once already. I still can't burn DVDs. Here's what happens:
    1) at stage 4, when it looks like the DVD will be burned, my Roxio toast application opens, and nothing else happens. If I close toast, it all shuts down (iDVD too). I tried using the Toast application system setup helper to shut off the automatic start up, but it just keeps opening.
    2) So, I eliminated toast altogether (took it off the machine). Now, I get to stage 4 and get an error code from iDVD that reads:
"Errors were found during the burning process
Recording engine: Device is not supported for the requested burn opertation"
Can anyone out there give me a clue? I'd love to join the digital age and actually use my computer the way it was intended. What is wrong?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    J

I am not using Toast, and I have burned DVDs successfully now and then. I tried to clear up all the problems I can track down, such as clearing 30 GB of hard drive space, getting my files all on the same drive, etc. Recently I wanted to experiment with burning some photos onto a DVD and it told me to change my burn speed. That must be the reason that I am now getting the error message: "Errors were found during the burning process
The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
Does anyone know how to repair this problem?
    This is driving me bonkers.

  • Integrating WordPress (or similar) with CF

    HI Everyone,
Our current web site is controlled by CommonSpot and we are looking at eliminating it altogether.  That being said, a request has been made to revamp the entire web site, but keeping Coldfusion as the primary app server.  Problem is we are looking at pushing WordPress and integrating it with our pages to allow for our technophobic users to keep from having to learn Dreamweaver or HTML.  WordPress is something they are familiar with and are more comfortable using.
That being said, it is possible to embed WordPress pages within CF aside from using iframes or better method?  My understanding is that using iframes would affect how our page gets indexed by search engines.
Secondly, are there any known issues having CF, WordPress, PHP and MySQL running on the same box?  I've encountered issues in the past with MySQL and Windows 2003, but I'm not sure if having these additional apps would cause other issues.

I've integrated a Wordpress login system with a CF site and I had some
problems with generating the exact same value for the auth cookies in
    PHP and CF.
Why do you want to embed the Wordpress pages into CF ? You can have
the wordpress blog and the CF site running side by side without
    problems.

  • Applications that I need on my Pre Plus

I was able to move from a Treo 680 to a Pre Plus because I knew that I could use Classic to emulate the PalmOS for applications that I really needed. I like many of the new Pre applications and certainly true multi-tasking is great but here is what I need and am missing in my Pre (in random order):
    (1) Windows Office program - A full Documents-to-go was promised more than a year ago. Now, Quick Office is promised for Web OS 2 but Web OS 2 is eliminating Classic. That's a big problem because I still need the rest of this list which is only available through Classic and Palm OS.
    (2) Genealogy program - I currently have "My Roots" that works with my PC program working through Classic. There is nothing yet in WebOS
    (3) Worldmate - Bits and pieces of its functions are available through WebOS but nothing compares to the real Worldmate which is available in multiple smartphone formats, including Palm OS.
    (4) Pocket Quicken or an equivalent - Here's a real problem. Intuit no longer licenses it but existing users can continue to use it. I use it on a daily basis through Classic. It synchronizes transactions with my PC version of Quicken. I'd settle for an alternative but there is none to my knowledge.
    (5) Backup that I control - I have used RscBackup for many years. I like selecting my backup preferences and being able to restore partially or fully. Also, I want them on my PC (and its backups) and not on yours.
    (6) One Synchronizing program - I currently synchronize with three applications: Chapura Synch Manager (dates, contacts, memos, todos), HotSync (for applications maintained in Classic), and Wifi Media Synch. And, still I have to use the USB connection to move files.
    (7) File Manager program - I want to be able to, at least, move a photo between folders but even that means turning off my Pre and attaching the USB cable and then disconnecting and restarting. Come on, we need an easier way!!
    (8) Better Music program - I really miss pTunes. It handled music, playlists, and radio with plenty of controls and adjustments.
    (9) Better eReader program - I have, to date, used six major reading programs between my Treo (eReader, MobiReader, Plucker) and Pre (Kobo, pReader, & Popelli.) The Pre ones are limited and cumbersome. Also, none can handle the DRM protected files, not even the basic ones from the public library.
    (10) Audio book reader - I am using the Music player on the Pre but I cannot stop and resume without losing my place in an hour long section.
    (11) Holidays on calendar - One thing I no longer am missing is holidays on my calendar. After years of using an application on my Treo that added them to my calendar, which I could then edit, I am now following a suggestion on the Palm Forum to use Google calendar. I cannot edit these but it is better than nothing and since Classic cannot send items from Holidates to Pre calendar, I will live with this patch.
I love my Pre and carry it everywhere. I have used it worldwide. I use it a lot! It could be so much better and less annoying if some of the above were available.
Oh, and about the battery life...

    1. Quickoffice has promised a pay for app that can edit.
    5. Have you heard of homebrew and Precentral.net?  There's a homebrew app called Save/Restore that will allow you to save application data onto the USB drive where you can offload it to your computer.
    7. Continuing with homebrew, there's an app called Internalz that will allow you to browse all of the files on your phone, not just your USB drive.
    8. I would recommend using Music (remix) as a music player and TuneIn by RadioTime for radio stations
    10. Music (remix) allows you to create bookmarks to you can resume where you last left off.

  • Is FireWire being phased out?

I too am disappointed that you can't synch the new iPod with FireWire (though I am told you can still charge the battery this way), since I don't have USB 2.0. Is this a general trend to phasing out Firewire? I would have loved to see a jump up to Firewire 800 on iPods!

    Agreed, jeffdc
From the Ars Technica Vid-iPod "Vivisection" (Bottom of the second page)
<code>Most speculation concerning the lack of Firewire support in the new iPods center around the space needed to package the Firewire chipset within the device. Most people who seem to be in the know have said that the amount of board space needed to implement Firewire vastly outweighs a similar USB implementation. Eliminating Firewire altogether seems to have been one of the many tradeoffs Apple had to make to achieve a smaller and lighter device. This may not be much consolation to those users with old USB 1.1 ports, but for many Mac and Windows users, this change shouldn't affect them much.</code>
I think the digital video community would scream if FireWire went away.

  • Am I the only one whith an iTunes (11.1.3 on Windows 7) that does not sync my playlist on my both my iPhone 4G and iPdos classic 5G

I have multiple Playlists organized by folders (multiple folders but all at 1 level, no folders within folders) and I trying to unload some (cristmast music) and uploading other playlists instead.
From iTunes view everything seems fine, as usual, but the update doesn't show on my iPod App. On my iPhone I'm seeing my Christmist playlists and not the ones that iTunes show as "checked and loaded" in iTunes when reconnecting my iPhone to my PC's USB port. Samething happens with my old iPod Classic. ...BUT!
But if I edit a playlist from my iPhone, after sync, I can see that change of that playlist in iTunes on my PC!? So the download from iPhone works but the upload from iTunes to iPhone does NOT work.
    My Hardware:
    - Windows 7 on a Dell Laptop
    - iOS 7 on iPhone 4G (32 gb)
    - iPod Classic 5G (32 gb)
I consider my self a power-user, using iTunes since 2002 and I just can't find a solution. I've been able to sync my playlist with both devices for the last time on December 15th 2013 but I think that was before updating to version 11.1.3.
Any body knows about a problem synchronizing (updating)  playlist on devices running iOS 7? This seems like a major bug to me since any of my devices can't sync completly.

After going by elimination to isolate if the problem was from (1) iTunes app, (2) my computer or (3) my old iPhone 4G, I figured out what my problem was.
    1) First I deleted & reinstalled iTunes on my Windows PC without succes, my playlist did not changed on my iPhone.
    2) I tested a successful #sync from the iMac at work.
So my conclusion is: The hard drive on my Windows PC is full and that is affecting iTunes SYNC functionalities.
So I'll do a back-up then run a "Clean Install" of my Windows OS, hoping that it will fix my SYNC problems.

  • IPod Classic not syncing all my songs from iTunes

Background: I've had my 160GB iPod classic for 5+ years and been using iTunes for close to ten years. I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and up until recently I've been updating both iTunes and iPod whenever updates are available. After the horrible experience of upgrading to iTunes 11 and trying for over a month to get used to working with all the annoying bugs and compromises in functionality that Apple stupidly introduced into what was once a really good piece of software, I decided a week ago to downgrade to version 10.7. I went thru all the necessary steps to make this downgrade work, eliminating the various error messages, etc, and it appears now that my earlier version of iTunes is fully functional.
But when I connected my iPod to sync new songs, I kept getting a message to scan and fix the disc on my iPod. I wasn't sure if I should do that so I ignored the prompt a few times. Then last night I decided to restore my iPod and start from scratch. The disc error message has gone away, but now it is not syncing all the songs it is supposed to.
Af far as I know there are no broken links and all the songs in my music library are located within iTunes, so that is not the issue. There may be some songs with the same title and artist but that appear on different albums, so those should not cause a problem. At this point I have too many songs to fit on my iPod so I have selected to sync only checked songs, and I have unchecked over 1000 songs in iTunes, so that when I connect the iPod, it doesn't tell me that there is not enough free space to sync the iPod, it just syncs the checked songs.
Before restoring my iPod, I had 14161 songs in iTunes, with 1105 of those songs unchecked so as not to sync them in the iPod. I did the math and that left 13056 songs that are checked, and that was how many songs showed up in the iPod after syncing it, with about 1GB of free space left on the iPod.
Now, after restoring my iPod, I get only 13009 songs showing up in the iPod, meaning 47 songs are missing (with exactly 1.4GB free space).
How can I troubleshoot this to find out what songs are missing and why, and then fix it? Is there an easy way to approach this daunting task? I am really fussy about my music library and am not the kind of casual user who just loads a bunch of stuff on my iPod and doesn't care if there are duplicates, broken links, missing songs. I manage my own library very assiduously each time I import new music and make sure it is tagged and filed correctly according to my own system. I want to fix this issue.
Could it be a problem with me using a newer version of the iPod updates with an older version of iTunes? And is there a way I can correct that, possibly downgrade the iPod software version I have now? Would it be worth the trouble to try restoring the iPod again, and if so, what precautions do I take to prevent the same thing happening again, where not all my songs get synced to the iPod.
Thanks to anyone who can offer some helpful advice...

  • Ipod Classic not recognized by iTunes

I am trying to initilize my daughters iPod classic as it won't sync - it is not showing up in iTunes. Here are the trouble-shooting steps I have covered:
    - the ipod will not stay connected to itunes for long enough to sync or restore. It breifly appears but then dissappears after about one second. Likewise the desktop.
    - It shows up in disk mode on the desktop, but not in itunes.
    - It is not the cable or the computer, this has been eliminated as an issue. We have several macs, ipods and ipads in the household to swap and try things out with.
    - I have followed instructions on apple support for troubleshooting the ipod, but the ipod won't show up in tiunes in order to restore to factory settings/
    - I have put the ipod into disk mode where it shows up on the desktop but not in itunes.
    - updated itunes per suggestion restarted computers. Naturally tried disk mode and standard mode.
    - After trying everything else, I initialized the ipod with disk utility 9HFS+ Journaled), but still does not show in itunes. It does show on the dektop. In fact, it is hanging iTunes.
Just about out of ideas. If there was someway of initilizing/updating/restoring the ipod without itunes. The computer recognizes the ipod no problem - just not itunes and there does not seem to be a way to restore it without it. Is there some hard reset on the itunes? Back to factory settings?
I have read many similar articles on this forum and others, but nothing has worked or is entirely appropriate. Yet it does seem to be a common problem.

Actually, since writing this I might be further along.
iTunes initially froze (hung) on connecting in standard mode, but just leaving it to sit thinking things over, it finally returned to life with the ipod. I am restoring the software as I type this and hopefully everything will be resolved.
I hope this helps others. The key seems to leave itunes to sort things out while it is hanging.

  • Ipod Classic 160GB - cannot format or restore

    Hi guys,
I have a two year old 160GB Ipod Classic, which has recently stopped working. It happened pretty much out of nowhere.
First of all, all the music disappeared from the Ipod. Then, when I connected it to the PC in order to see what's up (I'm using Windows 7); it wasn't picking it up properly - a message popped up saying that Windows needs to format the drive before it can be used. I also couldn't access any files on the drive manually through Windows Explorer.
I can't restore it using iTunes either. The Ipod just isn't picking up on iTunes altogether...  - but it's weird, because whenever I plug the Ipod in, iTunes opens itself automatically as per usual, but it's not actually registering the device, if that makes sense... All I see are my playlists and stuff, but nothing about an iPod actually being plugged in...
Also, I have noticed that in Memory Settings on the Ipod itself it says that there is 0kb free space (despite there only being about 15GB filled)...
I tried using Windows to format the device, but it didn't get anywhere - All I got was a message saying that Windows could not complete the format.
I have researched this thoroughly on the internet, but really couldn't find anything helpful.
I read something about using Windows to format Ipod devices being a bad idea, because of the FAT32 files used by such devices, so I downloaded a separate program recommended on another site called 'Fat32 Formatter', but that wasn't able to format it either.
On top of that, I now started having a problem with the hold button - basically, the Ipod is constantly locked, as if the hold button was on, but it isn't. I read about this being a fairly common issue, but still, it means I can't even try disc mode anymore.
If anyone has any ideas, that'd be greatly appreciated.

i too need help with this, i have exactly 137 videos, but it only syncs 106 of them, and then when i try to resync it, it actually took a few off! needless to say i am frustrated because i want to be able to watch all of my shows and stuff! hopefully apple will give us another fix soon (hear that apple! we gave u money now give us a working product!) any help is apreciated, oh ya, and i made a playlist with all the videos once, and then they all synced up which was fantastic! but then that one broke and i got a new one, and that doesnt work for this one for some reason... go figure, and this is all on a 160 btw, thanx

  • 80 GB Ipod Classic does not show up in itunes or Win Vista Machine

Hi, I recently updated my itunes software with ver.8 and since then my 80 GB Classic ipod does not show up in itunes or in my computer. Hence, I am not able to sync my itunes. When I connect my ipod it just shows "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" and just freezes there. Pls help?

Hi. When I connect my ipod to any microsoft device, sometimes my ipod doesnt connect. I cant charge it, or restore it as it behaves like a useless piece of plastic.. I get a yellow bubble 'Device not recognized or has malfunctioned'
This problem is bizarre! I cannot find anyone who actually has a solution for this problem! Apples standard answer is for me to reinstall my drivers or update itunes or windows. Done it. No solution yet.
My ipod works fine.... sometimes. Its a completely unpredictable problem. Ive googled this problem and so many ipod classic owners have asked.. solutions ive tried: the 5r's, updating drivers, It managed to connect once, but now it wont. My ipod normally works fine on my PC, XBOX, laptop and Mac.. but sometimes, unpredictably, it wont be recognized by anything apart from the mac. For a month it would not connect at all and I took it in to an Apple store where they told me it works fine. Its not my PC.. its up to date, and theres no reason why it doesnt work on my XBOX because some times it does.. last night it did, today its broken again, I suspect tomorrow it may work. This is SO frustrating!!
I have alot of experience in PC's and normally I can solve a problem by process of elimination, updating and reinstalling, but in this case.. everything seems fine. My only idea is that maybe its my Sync cable?? Which also makes no sense because it generally connects fine on the mac - and, why would a sync cable be unpredictable.. surely it either works or it doesnt. HELP PLEASE!!
    Nick.
