EMac won't Boot - different than other problems....

I recently salvaged an eMac G4 700mhz.
Upon powering it up it sticks on the initial load screen (gray screen with just a spinning circle)
I did a little research on these boards and decided to try a few things people mentioned.
One - startup from OSX disk (hold c with disk in drive on startup)
I tried this, when I do a screen comes up that says:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E0FF4) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac4,4"
The last line reads:
panic: We are hanging here...
At this point the computer will do nothing further and I have to do a hard shut down via the power button.
two - reseting the PMU
I did this, but I am a little concerned that I hit the button to many times (i don't know if there is some weird limit - like only hit it once and couldn't find anything that would validate or erase my concerns)
After resetting the PMU there was no change in the process and a power button hard shutdown was needed.
three - resetting the pram and nvram
I did both - first the pram
PRAM
Computer would make start up ding and then restart - no change in status once startup proceeded.
NVRAM/open firmware menu
0 > reset-nvram
Press Return
0 > reset-all
Press Return
Using the Open firmware menu. Computer would still not start up.
In all circumstances in order to power down I had to do a power button shut down.
So that is where I am now. When in the open firmware menu the system date says 1970 something...
I know how it got in this predicament. Multiple power failures from a inexperienced user shutting down their computer by turning off it's power strip.
Is there any hope I can save this thing, should I even try and what can I try next?
Thanks for the help!!

eMac - Do-It-Yourself has instructions on replacing the PRAM battery. It's pretty straightforward, certainly way better than a first-generation iMac. (Unless the 700 MHz eMac in question is one made when the factory was unknowingly going through a batch of substandard RAM access door screws, of all things; the metal was much too soft, and the screw heads would strip upon trying to unscrew it. Using a #2 Philips head that tightly fits the screw and apply steady pressure along the screwdriver shaft should avoid that problem even with a bad screw in place.)
The grey screen suggests the System is corrupted or the hard drive directory damaged, or both. You might be able to repair the drive in single-user mode using the Unix file system check utility fsck as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck.
The kernel panic reporting no driver found suggests the OS X boot disc you tried was for a model-specific Mac other than the 700 MHz eMac; you'll need to find an nVidia graphics model eMac OS X Install disc, or a retail (black label) OS X install disc (any version from 10.2 through 10.4 should work with the 700 MHz eMac).

  • ITunes won't open, different from other problems

Yeah. I don't have Norton (I do have the windwows firewall and stuff, but I already have it on the allowed list) and I've tried deleting the file. I double click on iTunes (I've even tried from the actual .exe file in the program files) and I get the hourglass, and nothing more. The processes for iPodService and iTunesHelper are running, but no iTunes. I tried using the New Tastk (run...) feature on the Task Manager, and the iTunes.exe process comes up for a few brief seconds and then goes away again. Any ideas? I've also re-installed it...
And on a side note, since I re-installed it, will I have to redo all of my playlists? If so, man there's a headache to go on top of finals... :-/

    Whoops, wrong link.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)

Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.

I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

  • Safari shows colors different than other browsers and GoLive

Does anyone know why Safari shows colors differently than Firefox, Explorer and Opera, Mozilla and Golive?
For example if I use "websafe" colors in photoshop with 2.2 gamma and sRGBie...2.1 and save, then import into Go Live with the working space the same, North America Web/ Internet, the colors are typically darker, although occasionally they are the same.
I have tried embedded profiles and non embeded.
The difference only happens when I view the page in Safari. By the way I use a mac, GoLive CS2
This is a constant frustration. I have created several tests but have found no satisfactory results. I am in the process of creating a website for teachers who use powerbooks and safari. And this color change really restricts creative possibilities. If the same page is viewed in Firefox it looks like it does in GoLive.
    Thanks for any help,
    Kevin

    >> When no profile is in use.. Safari will assume sRGB becaus this is the web standart profile...
True on Windows Safari and other Windows browsers.
Safari on Mac and other Mac browsers 'assumes, assigns, applies' the Mac's default monitor profile to untagged color.
This is easy to proof here in the sRGB rollover:
    http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html
If Mac Safari 'assumed' sRGB on untagged files, then the sRGB rollover will have zero change.
    +++++
    >> converting to sRGB before saving for the web ensure god color in all browseres, and JPG and PNG can be savde with color profile
Except in Mac browsers that have 1.8 monitor gamma profiled.
The Mac-specific problem with trying to match tagged graphics on matched-color background in Safari is:
    1) The color background is untagged and will Assume default Monior RGB.
    2) The tagged graphic will be Converted to Monitor RGB.
In other words, if you fill a page with 4bb93c and place a tagged sRGB image, filled with 4bb93c, the two colors won't match up in color-managed Mac web browsers like Mac Safari...however, if you untag the sRGB file, it will disappear on the page, but it will be off color depending how close Monitor RGB is to sRGB profile in Mac browsers.
Windows, on the other hand is a different beast, it Assigns sRGB to untagged color, so tagged/untagged sRGB will be good in all Windows browsers.
At least that is what I have seen here on my Windows Vista Business box.

  • EMac won't boot of restore CD

I have an eMac running Panther that won't boot up (I don't remember what os version number).
Recently I bought my Mac a new ultra thin keyboard. This keyboard requires a new driver to run the Mac specific function keys. I downloaded the driver, installed it and it didn't work, so following these instructions: (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/26/fix-those-aluminium-keyboard-woes/) I tried reinstalling... with woeful results. My eMac will no longer go past the grey apple screen with the spinning wheel. Sometimes (not always) it ends up on the grey no entry sign.
I have tried to reboot off the eMac Install and Restore disk (no.1). It doesn't work, just ejects the disk and carries on (so I cannot run "archive and install"). I have tried booting holding down "C", ALT, CMD-OPT-SFT-DEL and have even tried to boot off my disks for earlier OSX versions (10.2 and 10.0.4). No luck with anything.
I was able to make the Hardware Test run but it found no errors.
I have reset PRAM and I still couldn't boot of the restore disk. I tried booting with CMD-V, both before and after resetting PRAM. Previously I got about 15 lines of text and then the machine stuck on "still waiting for root device". After resetting PRAM I get about 200 lines, but all saying "can't determine" or "couldn't alloc" or "can't generate" or "can't find" or "cannot resolve" or "did not complete" up until it gets to "IP Firewall loaded" at which point it freezes.
So I have run out of ideas... can anyone suggest what I can try next, or how I can finally get my eMac restore disk to boot up?
(I also tried to save my files by connecting my MacBook and using Target Disk Mode... but although I was able to connect ok, all the folders I need to copy have a 'access denied' icon next to them... so I couldn't get that to work either... very frustrating!)

That you can boot off the Apple Hardware Test CD tells us the optical drive is OK. You have the original OS X discs that came with the eMac, which certainly should be able to boot the machine. The most obvious explanation for being able to boot from the AHT disc but not the OS X Install disc would be if the OS X Install disc is defective. Do you recall if you ever booted from the bundled OS X Install disc before? Does the disc show any smudges or scratches when viewed at an angle under a strong light? A more certain test would be to put the eMac OS X Install disc into the MacBook to see if the MacBook can recognize and read the disc.
If the eMac's OS X Install disc does appear defective, there are a couple of things to try. First is physically cleaning the disc; you can rub it with a soft lint-free cloth using distilled water (look in the auto section of grocery or drug stores) --- distilled avoids any trace chemicals or sediments in tap water --- or using the cleaning solution and mechanical disc spinner from any commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit (I've used Phillips brand cleaning kits for some time). That should work well for smudges or any buildup of grime on the disc. If using a commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit, use the lens cleaner for a pass or two in the eMac, just to improve the signal-to-noise ratio when trying to read th OS X Install disc.
If cleaning the disc doesn't help, you can try a couple of things. A phone call to eventually reach a live operator at the Apple Store or AppleCare will let you ask the person on the other end to check if there are any bundles disc sets available for your specific eMac model (you'll want to have the info in eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy). Such disc sets are sometimes unofficially available long after the Mac model with which they shipped goes off the sales catalog, and are available for a fairly modest charge.
Otherwise, you'd want to find another set of OS X Install discs that will work with your specific eMac model and let you do an Archive and Install to preserve your mail and other user data in place (which is easier than copying all user data to the MacBook, doing an erase & install on the eMac, and then dragging your data back from the MacBook). Finding an eMac-specific (gray label) set of discs on someplace like eBay would be least expensive but most time-consuming, and you'd need to make sure you get the right model eMac discs. It would be more certain of the results to get a retail (black label) OS X Install disc. Panther 10.3 of the same or higher dot version number as the eMac shipped with will work. It may or may not work to use a non-eMac model specific gray label Panther OS X Install disc if you afterwards use the Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9 on the eMac.
It might be easiest to just get the retail Tiger OS X 10.4 discs (still available by calling the Apple Store last time I'd heard), especially if you qualify for the educational or federal government/contractor purchasing discount. Upgrading to Leopard may also be an option with your eMac, but Tiger is fully mature and has lesser CPU and memory demands than Leopard. If you do go for the retail OS X disc route, be sure to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the Installer's menu --- Disk Utility in Tiger 10.4.2 and later is significantly more capable than DU in earlier versions.
And, come to think of it, upgrading to 10.4 would also eliminate the conflict with the keyboard function keys software that started all this in the second place (first place being the spilled chocolate milk on the original keyboard; just be grateful it wasn't small inquisitive peanut butter and jelly smeared hands trying to insert a CD into the optical drive).
Good luck! This is certainly an aggravating experience to go through for what should've been a two minute job of swapping keyboards! (If it helps any, from experience I can tell you that before you know it, instead of worrying about your children with computers, you'll be worrying about them with cars.)

  • EMac won't boot up

I have an eMac, OS 10.4, that won't boot up. It's stuck with logo of Apple and little spinning gear below. I tried booting up from System CD holding down C key, but after 1st disk I get a message that says there was an error and to try again. I try again and get same message. I'm thinking it may work if choose the option of erasing entire hard drive and starting over again. However, I'm reluctant to do this because my children have valuable pics on the HD. Any ideas?

When does the error message come up when you try to boot from your OS X 10.4 Install DVD? "After the first disk" suggests you may have the 10.4 Media Exchange set of CDs; if you can boot from the first one, go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility to run Repair Disk on the internal HD.
If you still cannot boot from the OS X Install disc, try booting into single-user mode and running the file system check utility.
Repeat Repair Disk or fsck until it reports no problems.
See Using Disk Utility and fsck.

  • EMac won't boot to hard drive - Flashing Folder at Startup

I did have this eMac working with this Hard Drive months ago. Now I just get the Folder with the Flashing icon at Startup. So I installed OSX Tiger on a Firewire External Drive & it Works perfectly running from the FW HD. The Internal Hard Drive then shows up on Desktop. I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive & everything comes up Perfect. It just won't Boot to the Internal Hard Drive. I even used Super Duper to make a Clone of the Firewire Hard Drive that is running, but Still I get the Flashing Folder with The Finder Face, when I unplug the Firewire Drive & attempt to boot from Internal HD. Any clue? Thank you in advance.

I run Disc Permissions & Verifications on the Internal Drive
Run Repair Disk on the eMacs internal disk.
If it passes then open the System preferences > Startup Disk and select the eMac's disk.

  • EMac - won't boot to install disk

I've got a G4 eMac (512Mb, Jaguar) that randomly freezes. These freezes do not occur in Safe mode. So I'm trying to reformat the HD and clean reinstall the OS. However, I cannot get it to boot to the original install disk. Any ideas?
    Here's what I've tried:
*TechTools Plus shows no hardware issues; all tests pass.
    *Hard drive is verified.
    *Repaired permissions (ran 4x).
    *I've zapped PRAM (3x)
*I've entered "set-defaults" and "reset all" in Open Firmware command line interface.
*CD in the drive will mount. I can browse files on the CD.
*I've tested the CD in another eMac and it will boot the computer. I actually have another eMac with install disks and they will not boot this problem eMac either.
*When I launch the OS install program and press the "Restart" button, the computer restarts but winds up booting from the HD (I can first hear the CD read head accessing the CD).
*When I hold down the Alt/Opt key on start up, it will not list the install CD as a boot option.
*When I press the "C" on start up, it still boots from the HD.
    Shall I say, "Arrggh"?
    Any help appreciated.

Interesting results. I was able to clean install the OS from another computer to the flaky eMac using the target mode as you described. From the other computer, I can even boot from the flaky eMac hard drive in target mode (start flaky eMac in target mode, start the other Mac while holding the Alt key and select the flaky eMac hard disk as boot option from the two listed.)
But I still cannot directly boot the flaky eMac (and Safe mode doesn't boot now).
I have repeated the following after OS install.
    *reset PRAM
*entered "set-defaults" and "reset-all" in Open Firmware command line interface.
Am I running up against a hardware problem?

  • Ipod Touch Recognition Problems...***Different Than Others***

I have seen a bunch of other posts similar to the problem i have but i wanted to post one specifically with my problem.
Ok, when i plug my ipod in it starts to charge like it should and itunes opens up, like it should...But my ipod doesn't show up in itunes and it doesn't show up in My Computer. If anyone can help me with my situation it would be much appreciated. I just want my baby back!

I had the same problem with my iPhone with iTunes 7 and I solved it up by installing iTunes 8.
If your problem remains, you can use an alternative iPod Touch manager such as the one I used before iTunes 8 was released: CopyTrans Manager http://www.copytrans.net/manager.php

  • WiFi connection problems (different than others)

    Hello!
I got an iPod touch 32GB 4 days ago and I have really big problems with WiFi. I cannot connect to any wifi i've tried. Even setting my own wifi unprotected and unfiltered, it still doesn't work. I've also tried at wifi connection at work. Yesterday a mate who has an iPod touch 8Gb and me tried to connect to our wifi at work, and he COULD connect to, but not me!!. Having one each iPod near to other, doing exactly the same steps. No way.
These are the symptoms: I enter the password and it's accepted (if I enter wrong password, or filtered by MAC, I get a response telling that it's not possible to connect; but if I put the right password, it 'connects', tried WEP 40bits using Key1 and WPA PSK). The blue tick appears near to SSID, but there's no blue icon on the upper left of screen (near to 'iPod'). If I enter on configuration of the 'connected' network, I see that I have selected DCHP, but got no IP, no netmask, no router, no anything. So, if I try to set an Static IP, when I exit Settings pannel and enter again, the blue tick is still there, but the settings is set to DHCP again!!.If I sleep/wake iPod, then it appears disconnected.
I'm really getting crazy!. The most incredible thing is that with an iPod 8GB it works and mine's which is an 32GB model and started to sell later, doesn't not work!.
At home I have a Linksys WRT54GL using firmware OpenWRT 0.9. And at work it's one from Telefonica.
Is maybe some kind of known bug that will be fixed on next update? (I really really beg for...). I read somewhere something about a wifi bug in 32GB edition of iPod Touch.... is that true?
Is there something I could try? Any ideas?

    Hi Jason!
I tried the 'Forget this network' several times, but it has no effect. The iPods doesn't get any IP from the router. I can't set an Static configuration anyway, it simply doesn't work. The Static configuration is erased when I leave Settings panel.
In the router's log is not registered any DCHP query at all. I use MAC filtering, but I tried disabling it, no way. If I remove the iPod's MAC, I get an error while trying to connect. When I add the MAC to the list again, it 'connects' the same way I explained before. The same happens with security, bad password: error, good password: 'connects' but no IP no WiFi icon in iPod screen at top, just the blue tick near to the network name...
At home I have two laptop, one PDA and some other wireless gadgets (from friends, etc) that I configured myself in the router and never had a single problem. But with the iPod I couldn't do anything :'(
    Thanks for the idea, anyway

  • Emac won't boot up unless I zap the pram

I have a 2003 Emac that used to be a server and was on all the time. We have now traded it out for a newer server and redid the harddrive. Now it will not boot up unless we zap the pram each time and than sometimes that doesn't even work. I have redone the hard drive again thinking maybe it was the operating system but that didnt fix the problem. I changed the battery with no luck. There is no chime at all when it gets powered up and than makes a soft noise that I can's describe. Any thoughts. Thanks

I doubt that "" would describe any of the beeps described in Power On Self-Test Beep Definition, but have you tried pulling and re-seating the RAM? If there are two DIMMs in the eMac, pull one, then the other, and see if that makes any difference.

  • EMac Won't Boot from Internal HD

Got an eMac that would no longer boot from a client. Got all the data off the drive with Data Rescue, reformatted the internal HD, and reinstalled OS X 10.4. The install went fine, but the machine will still not boot off the internal HD. I just get the question mark. I tried reformatting the HD and re-installing 10.4 from a different set of media. Same problem. I ran a full surface scan on the HD with TechTool, which it passed. I ran the exteneded Apple hardware test, which it passed. I yet again formatted the HD and installed 10.4. Still got the question mark. The eMac will boot off of a CD, a DVD, or an external FW drive, but it just doesn't want to boot from the internal.
My next step is to replace the internal HD, which I don't want to do because getting into the eMac is such a pain. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
Power Mac G5 1.8 GHz DP   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Presumablly you've double-checked that the drive was formatted as HFS+ / Mac Extended. After installing the system, restart from the OS X Install Disk again and run Disk Utility. Does DU recognize the drive after the install? Run Repair Disk on the hard drive and see if that reports any problems. Since you're reinstalling from OS X Install disks after reformatting the hard drive, this link doesn't really apply.

  • Uh-oh... have I lost the lot? eMac won't boot up... Scared!

Hi guys, little bit scared here, I'm worried I've lost everything on my eMac... I'll tell you what's happened...
Just woke it from sleep to find that it wasnt displaying a mouse pointer. So, I shut down using the power button at the side.
Press the power button again to wake it up, goes into a plain grey screen - no apple, no spinning status circle.
This screen stays for a while but nothing happens.
So I shut down again using the power button.
Tried to start up again, same plain grey screen. I give it a little longer this time, and eventually I get a little blue folder with a flashing question mark (?) and square smiling face macintosh logo.
OK, so now I'm really worried. Have I lost everything? Whats happening? How do I turn it off from this screen? I'm currently using my housemate's laptop and will be online for a while so any help people can give ASAP, well you'd rank in my list of favourite people ever really. I'm very confused! Help! Please!

    Gareth,
Some links to back up Matt's advice:
    Using Disk Utility and fsck
If Disk Utility reports errors but can't repair them, you'll need a third-party utility:
    DiskWarrior
If you have access to another Mac, you can try booting the problem Mac in Firewire Target Disk Mode to recover your files.
If nothing else is working, you can resort to an Archive and Install. Don't try this if Disk Utility is reporting unrepairable drive errors --- trying to put a new OS on a suspect hard drive is asking for more trouble. Zeroing the hard drive from the Installer's Disk Utility and reinstalling everything from scratch would map out bad disk sectors but wipes out any data you don't have backup up, so try Disk Utility and if needed Disk Warrior first.

  • EMac won't boot into OS 9

I have the retail version of of OS 9.2.1 which I was able to install and then update to 9.2.2 It runs classic fine, but when I try to boot to os 9 it boots and then the screen goes black. I started it with extensions off and narrowed it down to the nvidia drivers and have tried replacing/updating/bribing etc. But I get the same result. I then wiped the hard drive clean and tried an install disc from a Powermac G4. It installed OS 9 just fine but then it had no audio through the speakers or earphone jack. I tried the control panel and it seems to think the speakers are working fine. I booted into OS X and sound work under classic. I don't have the original install disc, and am at a loss as to what to do. If anyone has any help they can offer, it would be much appreciated.

According to apple-history.com, the minimum OS for the 700MHz eMac is OS9.2.2.
This will put it in a similar vein to my MDD, that in theory you need the original install disc to get OS9.2.2 installed.
Note that it may not just be OS9.2.1 + OS9.2.2 Update. There are more than a few special video / audio / hardware drivers that were needed for the eMac. I checked many years ago for my MDD, there were about a dozen control panels / extensions in the MDD install version of OS9.2.2 that had later versions than an OS9.2.1 + OS 9.2.2 Update installation.
This is no comfort to you, but with an OS9.2.1 + OS9.2.2 update installation you might get most things working, at least until you can source a replacement set of discs.
There have been posts here that suggested the MDD could boot from and install an OS9 system from the true retail OS9.2.1 disc (white background, gold 9), but then that installed OS was not bootable. You would need to find a way to install the OS9.2.2 update. Sounds like you've managed all of this, but ended up with no video.
Best consolation I can see is that OSX will be pretty decent on a 700MHz G4.

  • Boot time and other problems

OK, I'm working on a brand new MBP and I have 3 things that I cannot seem to resolve.
1.) It takes more than 1 minute to shutdown. The screen goes black and it just sits there for over a minute doing apparently nothing before shutting off. Maybe this is nitpicky but my old MBP was faster. I've tried different configurations and can't get this to go away.
2.) It takes more than a full minute between the startup chime and the login prompt. Again, black screen doing apparently nothing. (also my old MBP was, again, faster than this)
3.) When I leave my MBP open overnight to sync with an online cloud server, the wifi drops. As soon as I move the mouse or anything and the screen comes back on, the wifi comes back. The entirely negates my ability to do backups when I'm not present.
4.) This is less of a problem and more of a nuisance: if I so much as breathe on the power cable, it falls off the computer. I use my MBP in bed and I cannot, for the life of me, keep the power adapter connected without remaining perfectly still. (Again, not a problem on my old MBP)
5.) Also a nuisance, there are a TON of apps (apparently running in the background?) that are not actually open but still present in the force quit menu. Why is ⌘+Q not sufficient to actually quit something??
Also, yes, I'm fully updated blah blah blah...

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
