EMac Won't Startup

I've been using the computer for 2 years for only the fax app in OS9.
The computer makes a short buzz sound when you hit the power button.
HOWEVER, when I hit the power button now, I still hear the buzz, but the computer does nothing. No flicker of the screen and no sound of the drive powering up. Nothing.
* Is the computer dead? Is it fixable?
I did get an USB Fax Modem for my iMac Intel 10.6. However the software crashed that computer. So right now I am still without a Fax Modem...
Thanks.
Richard

Hi Richard,
Gee, that buzz could be anything, from merely a shorting power button to a frazzled logic board.
I think it would be easier finding a software solution for faxing on your Intel 10.6, than analysing a hardware defect on your eMac.

I just dowloaded the latest update for my eMac but now it won't restart. It hangs at the blue screen after the apple. I have already run disk utility from the 10.4 install disc and repaired permissions, but even safe mode won't work.
    What should I do next?

Hi hadleyoil, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • EMac won't startup and other troubling issues.

    Hi All,
First time posting, so forgive the newbie factor here.
I have an eMac Combo that was manufactired in 2003, ATI Graphics card model. The problems started about a week ago when after a storm, we were unable to connect to the internet using dial-up. The computer was unplugged before the storm, so don't think it was damaged by lightning, but you never know. Anyway, I was trying to resolve the problem yesterday, and I have made things much, much worse.
Firstly, I checked that all my passwords and account info was correct, checked dial-up server - OK, checked phone line and got dial tone with a handset. So narrowing down the possibilities, I ran the OSX Hardware test DVD, all came up fine. When I rebooted, I repaired permissions and restarted, I then noticed the time was wrong, corrected the time. Still with no luck, I tried to set-up another user account, something happened when I did this and I was forced to manually power down the eMac. Upon restarting, I decided to use an existing different user account. I logged out and back in as this user. As soon as i touched the internet connect button, the computer froze. Manually reset, thyen got a message after the white screen with grey apple logo, "You need to restart the computer". I did and got the massage again. The consulted the manual and pressed cmd, opt, p, r during startup. Still got error message. Computer is now dead I fear, however after doing some more research have determined that the battery may be dead. Can anyone please help me out and advise whether the computer may be restored with just a battery replacement? All other help greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post, but thought the more info, the better help I would get.
    Dave

The problem is that I can not start up at all. When
it gets to the white screen apple logo, I get a
message saying that "You need to restart the
computer" in multiple languages with this error
message on the last line "FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF". I have
no idea what this error message is. It is proving
difficult to research as well, as I haven't found a
Mac OSX reference to this error yet.
That, as you've been told is a kernel panic. Typically they're hardware-related. Yours seems to have something to do with ethernet. Note that the most common cause of KPs is bad memory, so if you install some new RAM and start having KPs the odds are pretty good that the new RAM is bad.
The basic troubleshooting steps for all hardware KPs is the same: remove the possible causes of the problem. As was pointed out to you, in your case, what you do is to remove the ethernet connection if you just made one, or to make an ethernet connection if you don't have one.
    This is driving me crazy.
Wellcome to the joys of hardware troubleshooting. Be glad that you don't need to know about IRQs, DMA channels, and IDE master/slave/cable select nonsense.
I am trying to find Hdd's
that will work on the eMac and most computer shops
    are proving to be unhelpful.
Any internal one-third height IDE/ATA100 or 133 (yes, I know, I know, IDE isn't really the same as ATA, but for our purposes it'll do, and any computer store will know what he needs) 3.5" drive will work. Get one which is rated for low power consumption, space in an eMac is tight and high-power-consumption drives will overheat. Your real problem isn't getting the drive, it's opening up the eMac to install it. I REALLY DON'T RECOMMEND that you open an eMac as your first hardware hacking project. Find a professional to do it. If you must open it yourself, there are take-apart instructions available online. Apple used to post them, don't know if they've taken 'em down, or even if they've posted the ones for the newer generation eMacs. Get hold of a take-apart PDF and READ IT CAREFULLY before starting. Be especially careful of the monitor, that thing stores 25,000 volts, and is fragile besides.
    I don't want to shell
out money on a new hdd and discover that it will not
    fit,
It's really hard to find internal drives that aren't one-third height nowadays...
or that it is not supported by Mac OSX 10.2.4.
If it'll fit, and it's a IDE drive, it'll work. (SATA drives and SCSI drives need not apply, but they cost more than IDE drives, anyway.)
It is times like this that I get so frustrated being
the only mac user I know.
But think you good you'll feel the next time a big virus (<cough> Sony rootkit (</cough>) starts making the rounds.
Can somebody please advise whether the error code
refers to hdd failure or OS system failure.
Neither. It's ethernet, but you know that already.
    I tried
to archive and install OSX again, but still got this
error code. Disc Repair says that my drive is 99.7%
    free. Have i lost everything?
    Did you do an erase?

  • EMac won't reboot after 10.4.7 combo update

Help! I just installed the 10.4.7 combo update, and my eMac won't reboot. I get to the gray Apple startup screen (no progress dial is displayed), and it won't go any further. Safe mode doesn't work either. Can't get the CD drawer open to boot from CD.
I must have goofed, because I had the iBook connected to the eMac over the AirPort hub at the time it was updating, doing a backup. (The iBook was the client.)
The same update worked fine on my iBook. No issues there. Would appreciate any help!

    Hello,
I just went through all this stuff with another guy here.
We did eventually get his machine running again (it took a while, but we hit on the right answer for him).
But, rather than repeat the long and lengthy list of things we tried, I'm going to provide you with the link to our discussion.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2641346#2641346
At the beginning, it will sound more like a complaint. But, it does evolve into a trouble-shooting and repair discussion.
I would recommend reading through the messages from the beginning, and working your way through the discussion.
As you proceed, try each of the ideas on your machine.
With any luck, one of the less dramatic options will work for you.
I hope you find an answer in there.
If you try all that, and still nothing works, then let us know.
I am not trying to "brush you off". But, it was an exhaustive process fixing his machine. And, everything I could offer to you to try would be listed in that discussion.
So, rather than re-invent the wheel (so to speak), I thought it might be best to just have you try the trouble-shooting steps we discussed there.
Let me know how that works out for you. And, let me know if it works.
If it doesn't work, let me know what steps you did try so that I don't suggest something you have already done.
    I do hope this helps.

  • EMac won't start from optical drive

For no apparent reason, my eMac stopped recognizing the ethernet connection. So, after reading about this problem on the forums, I tried two suggestions: resetting the NVRAM and zapping the PRAM. This fixed the ethernet problem.
But, I now have a new problem. The eMac won't start up from the optical drive [hold C key during startup nor choosing disc in startup control]. The startup routine gets to the pale gray apple, but the little rotating spokes do not appear. Instead the gray apple seems to jump about a quarter inch to the right and it seems like a square image tries to appear. The routine freezes at this point and and the optical drive spins down. I have to unplug the eMac, and then restart from power button. At this point it starts up fine from the internal drive.
I tried zapping the PRAM again. I also removed the battery. There is no accessible PMU/CUDA button that I can find. At this point, I've run out of ideas.

    Thanks for the further suggestions.
I tried the fsck and it reported no problems. I had my doubts that this was a source because the problem of not booting from superdrive came AFTER the NVRAM reset, which is fundamentally a hardware modification. I boot periodically from Panther install disc 1 to do a repair disc and permissions routine. When I couldn't do this after the NVRAM reset, I could only conclude that this tweek had some direct effect on the Mac's firmware-based start-up routines.
There is nothing physically wrong with the install discs, they work perfectly in my other emac as well as my two G4 towers. So, I'm still at a loss as to what to do next. I can't reload the OS. And, I can do any hardware diagnostics. So I guess it's a decision of whether or not to spend the big $$ for Apple repair. These are classroom macs, and we have no tech support or $$.

  • Installed helpdesk to sles11sp1 vmware and won't startup

    Hi,
I installed the service desk to sles11sp1 for vmware and it won't startup.
I am also running zenworks configuration mgmt 11 RC3 on the same server.
    I installed with:
    java -install install.jar -console
When prompted for a port I took the default 8700. It gave me a null and then prompted for a 1 to continue. So I selected 1 and continued.
    If I http://ip:8700 I get nothing.
    If I netstat -a -n|grep 8700 I get nothing.
What do I need to do to get this to work? Also I thought I could get this service desk integrated with zenworks configuration management?

    Hey Kenneth,
So it sounds as if your iPad is not responding at all when you try to turn it on, is that correct? If so, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If you get it to start up and it is still not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, use the steps in this article to troubleshoot that issue -
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support

  • My eMac won't go to sleep

My eMac won't go to sleep automatically. I have to do it manually. I've tried reseting energy saving to default. No change. Also my screen saver doesn't appear. The screen will just go black. So I endup with a black screen while the computer just keeps running. It is very annoying. Anyone had the same problem?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • My TC won't startup with ethernet cables connected.

It will start up fine w/out ethernet cables, but with ethernet, it won't startup.  I have two wired connections, my thunderbolt display/mbp and my cannon printer.
It will sit with amber light solid.
When I disconnect the two ethernet cables, it will startup fine.  Then I connect the two cables and everything is good.
This is a new from apple store today 2tb TC.  It's taken about 2 hours to get it setup until now I've figured out the ethernet cable issue.  Is there a fix?  I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow or in the next couple of days if there's no fix provided.

Well, it's working fine today.  I'll continue to try it over the next couple of days and if it happens more, I'll take it back for an exchange.  It happend quite a few times last night.
I have apple care for my mbp, so this should be covered on it.  About 1.5 years left.
    Thanks.
I'll update this post if I end up needing to exchange it.

  • My G4 AGP won't startup after turning on firewire target disk mode

Can any one help me on this? I have a G4 AGP Graphics Mac running 10.4.11.
I turned on firewire target disk mode in the startup utilities to transfer files to my G5. The G4 started up in Firewire just fine and I could open it up as a drive on my G5, but the problem now is that the G4 won't startup in anything but firewire mode.
So my question is: How do you shut off the firewire target disk mode? I have tried all the keyboard commands at startup and inserted the Tiger install disk and holding the C key, but nothing will let me get me passed the Firewire Icon at startup.

It sounds like your hard drive is bad. If you can see it in Disk Utility you may still be able to get your files off of it. If you have one of the MacBooks with the removable battery it's very easy to put in a new hard drive.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Jon

Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer).
