Email running amok

I have a desktop, a laptop, a palmtop (Viliv N5) and now this Incredible.
I have policies that I've developed myself to keep important emails (and threads) from fragmenting across multiple machines, but it's pretty ad hoc and kludgy.
Surely in this day and age and all the "cloud" crapola, there's gotta be a better way.
FYI, I do NOT and will not use Outlook, I use Thunderbird, at least on the PCs. I have no idea WHAT I'll be using on the Incredible, since it's still getting it's first charge.
So...
What perfectly unifies email across multiple machines, including one Incredible?

A Viliv N5 is just a really teensy PC... aside from that, nothing special.
I've had people suggest Gmail and even Google Sync and I've tried to look into it but it doesn't really seem to explain how all your devices are put in the same state with all the same e-mails, incoming and outgoing, on all the devices. The only thing I can think of is that either Gmail is just an IMAP -based mail server, in which case all your e-mail is sitting on the Gmail servers all the time and is bounced out to the individual devices, which is not particularly advanced or sophisticated, or people are just suggesting that I use a web-based mail system and always access my e-mail through a browser, which I could just as well do with Fastmail or my GoDaddy account as I could with Gmail. So why then Gmail?
I guess what I'm saying is that I appreciate the suggestion but apparently I don't fully understand it. I don't see what Gmail brings to the party that isn't already out there in other web-based mail systems, and I haven't had it explained how Google Sync or Gmail might uniquely solve this particular problem, keeping in mind I want all my contacts and all my incoming and all my outgoing e-mail all to be identical on all the different devices.
But thanks for the suggestion.

  • I bought a new imac running Loin and Office 2011. The server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software.

I bought a new imac running Loin with Office 2011. I am the only mac in the office and the Server we use to access emails runs exchange 2003 and my IT person says the imac is not compatible with the server. The server does not want to let me access using any email software other than webmail access through our website. It looks as though 2011 is not compatible with 2003 per some searches online, but what are some options I have to gain full access again? I purchased parallels in hopes that this my help and I am able to use remote desktop connection to log on to server but can not drag and drop files I need. There is a shared drive on that Server we all use to exchange files.
The two main issues are gaining access to my email again and ability to drag and drop files from mac to pc. I hope this is enough info to get some solutions.
PS - IT person says my iMac's IP is what his server does not understand so that is why I can not login.

Office 2011 is not compatbile with Exchange 2003.
I suggest you post further Office related questions on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software:

  • Swapfiles Run Amok since 10.5 to 10.6.4 Upgrade

Okay, on to problem #2. Yesterday I posted about my first issue regarding kernel panics here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2604197&tstart=0
Prompt help from the user community solved my problem and was very much appreciated!
Now that the kernel panics have stopped, I'm on to my next problem. First, my system specs:
    OS X v 10.6.4
    2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon processors
    10GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    So here's what's happening in a nutshell:
*I log into my system and performance slowly grinds down to a halt after about a 1/2 hour use until the "Force Quit Applications" window pops up and I get the message, "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory."*
I did a bit of research online and was able to observe one clue as to what the problem might be. I opened a terminal and went to /var/vm and watched over a 1/2 hour period as new swapfiles were continually created at about 1GB each until I was left with only 30GB of space on my startup disk after starting with about 94GB available. Sooooo, something is going berserk and chewing up memory and then virtual memory to the point that I get the "Force Quit Application" window and everything eventually locks up.
I opened up the activity monitor window to try to get an idea of what's going on and the only thing that jumps out at me is SystemUIServer and mdworker are bouncing around at 40-70% of CPU time. A little more searching around and I see mdworker is part of Spotlight. I'm happy to shut down Spotlight if I could just figure out how. I tried the command "mdutil -a -i off" but that didn't seem to do it between one boot and the next.
    Any help?

Next Clue: I created a new admin account (called "ma") and logged in as that user. No problems. I opened some of my usual apps, browsed the intertubes, etc with no problem. After 1/2 an hour I logged out and logged in as my normal user (rahaimk) and BOOM, once again, swapfiles start to run amok.
"The Hatter"... I'm looking into your questions now. First quick answer regarding pshop scratch: it resides on its on completely dedicated disk drive appropriately called "scratch".
I've done several safe boots (assuming you mean safe booting by holding down the shift key on boot up) all the way to the desktop.
I'll continue to look into your other suggestions.
Is there any way to see exactly what is writing to the swap file? Or, more specifically, what is writing to the swapfile most.

Why does iCloud email run so slowly in Firefox? Typing is frequently stopped and "non-responsive" shows up and everything freezes for a while. Doesn't happen with Outlook or Google?

    Hi,
You can consider the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems Reset Firefox] feature via '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information'''. If it is okay, you can then install the Mozilla Archive Format add-on.
If you have security software installed you can try to delete all existing entries for Firefox and its sub processes in the different configuration modules and try to fully trust/allow Firefox afresh. Even after network access is completed, Firefox would still need unlimited access to its disk cache/memory as well as its files. Please see [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firewalls this].

  • 10.9.5 IMAP running amok: deleting emails

    Hello all,
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (10.9.5) to replace my "vintage" 2008 17" silver MBP (10.6.8) due to the old computer's inability to run this year's Turbo Tax. The Mac Mail app that came with the computer ("Mail" v 7.3 (1878.6) seems to have configured itself when it came to the incoming and outgoing server names for Time-Warner, our ISP. The new computer's email is also IMAP instead of POP. The other devices still in use on our network (one 2009 white MacBook and an iPhone 5s) are still using POP.
The problem: It appears that the new IMAP mail app on the new MacBook is deleting emails off the Time-Warner server. One test message sent to myself appeared for just a flash, a split second) in Mac mail's Inbox. It was too fast to read, and was also deleted from the server. Other test emails have remained in the Mac mail Inbox for minutes or hours before being auto-deleted from both my Mac and the Time-Warner server. There are apparently no settings on the Time-Warner webmail site to control the frequency at which messages are deleted from the server so it seems to me the Mail app is doing it.
I could just change the names of the servers in the new MacBook back to the old POP names, but in that dialog box it says "Account type: IMAP" which I cannot change. Has anyone experienced such a problem?
    Thank you in advance,
    On Duty Dad

    Linc,
Thanks for the reply. I did seem to stumble upon the solution (that is, everything is working for now but time will still have to tell). I changed my new MacBook's account to a POP one. The fault apparently lay in the combination of POP and IMAP accounts linked to the same email address.
    Best,
    ODD

Suddenly, without having made any significant changes to my iMac running Mavericks, I cannot attach a file to an email. I get a spinning wheel, I can't even force quit, the machine just locks up.  Happens with different mail clients and different browsers.

    Hello E1777,
You can try this link to download iTunes from the Apple website. It should resolve the issue for you.

  • Auto-recharge runs amok - warning!

Chat support seems unable to grasp this issue and the form to submit email questions is having some unspecified problem that keeps it from going through.
I want to give folks a heads up who use Skype Credit with Auto-Recharge enabled that despite a very specific scope of services, Auto-Recharge has lattitude within Skypes billing systems to 'vote early and often' as it were.
In multiple places in your account you can find notes like: "Auto-recharge is enabled - Your Skype Credit balance will Auto-recharge with $10.00 when it falls below $2.00 using payment method PayPal"
That (and the other pages and FAQs) clearly define the scope as being limited to charging you $10 when your balance falls below a trigger point.
A reasonable person would assume this means the only time Skype would charge me is when my trigger point is reached - and that the only charge would be one in the amount of $10.
This is not however what happened to me.  I had a $24 Skype Online Number charge set to bill to Skype Credit.  When this occured in February, Paypal charged me three separate times for $10 each, until it had enough Skype Credit to process the $24 charge on the account.
While I don't have an issue with paying for the Online Number, and wouldn't have an issue with Skype attempting to use the available balance for that charge or even ultimately for Skype to charge me $10 to try to cover the charge, the underlying issue here is that Skype feels that having approval to charge me $10 under specific circumstances is the same as having my approval to charge me to cover ANY amount that their system happens to think is due.
What if there was a billing error (we've all experienced something like this) and the automated system thought that I was to be charged $240 instead of $24?  It would have tried to hit my account 24 times instead of just 3.
The correct response to this situation would be for Skype to email my account with a notice that my online number recently attempted to charge my Skype Credit but that it was unable to go through ... please go check and resolve the issue, etc.  Skype lacks the authority to charge me over and over as it pleases until it decides it has enough to process automated charges.  Skypes only authority is to charge me $10 when my account balance gets below $2.
Online chat's only support advice in February was to disable Auto-recharge ... which by all other accounts is very convenient.  I would not remember to log in to cover my $3 monthly charge every month, so within the scope of the auto-recharge agreement it works very well ... it's just that somewhere a glitch came into the works and this vehicle into my bank account now lets skype do whatever it wants with my bill.  Online chat also gave me an invalid 'SR' number after promising to report this to the developers, so I was unable to get someone to check on the status of that issue.
While changing Online Number to bill a different method might solve the specific issue of my online number, it doesn't change the fact that Skype has and likely will continue to operate with this problem in place unless there's some way to communicate the issue to someone who will take ownership of the customers expereince and resolve to have this hole patched.

Hello and thank you for your post. I've escalated your cmments within Skype for review.

  • Computer run amok...

    Hi,
Strange things happening for some time...
I've got mid 2009 MBA - 2,13 GHz Core2Duo with 128 GB SSD, last summer upgraded to Lion.
Except notorius overheating issues (fans at 6200 RPM, kernel_task 150% CPU, etc), hardware run rather smoothly. But suddenly I started to experience several kernel panics - even twice daily, and after all, sound stopped working and kernel panics vanished. I've reinstalled the system hoping that sound problems are related to software and indeed sound started to work, but after some time scenario was the same - kernel panics, then loudspeaker icon grayed out. What is strange is that sometimes, after couple of restarts sound starts to work - like now for example.
But the real problem appeared this morning - WiFi was out - AirPort Icon is grayed out and there is a message - no hardware found or something. I tried several restarts, PRAM reset, SMC reset, run Apple Hardware Test from the CD (no troubles found), and after few restarts Wi-Fi started to operate as normal. Unfortunately, I couldn't open my Excel files (sic!) and I saw the message that they are read only. After restart, excel files opens normally, but... wifi is again unable.
What the **** is happening? My experience tells me, that hardware problem is rather radical - device stops working and that's it. Here, hardware once works, and then it does not... What should I do? Any hints?
    Regards
    Krzysztof

Same here, happened overnight the day I updated OS software. Turned off then next day turned on. Found this question often enough in forums but no solutions. Have tried resetting, Diagnostics, Assist Me, deleting network, adding back in, deleting location, adding location, permission repairs, borrowing disc from my iMac and MM to repair, tried to reinstall OS with remote drive but it fails to get on with AirPort and I don't have ethernet. It can find and connect to both MM and iMac but cannot get on my network. Tried resetting Verizon FiOS router. Tired all just posted more than twice, some mor than 10 times. Tried over 3 days. All other devices and computers (11 total) can get on. MBA just times out and shows greyed out wireless signal icon with exclamation point.
Once, it even froze up and refused to accept any keystrokes when entering network name and password. Another time it started spinning and displayed message that it was searching for a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (??MBA doesn't have that as it is integrated!).
I am ready to trash it after 3 years and go back to PC notebook. Really frustrated with Macs and Apple philosphy right now.

  • Web Application with the ability to email running with a GMSA

I have a client that requires the ability to send mail from a web application that has an app pool running as a GMSA in order to orchestrate the other services for the application under a single service account that is managed by active directory.
My question is what would be the best practice to allow the service account the ability to send mail...

  • Why does the ProTranscoderTool_sb run amok?

Every time I open iMovie, when iMovie loads, after a few seconds the fan comes on, and I know something is not right. With the Activity monitor I discovered that the ProTranscoderTool_sb uses up anywhere from 110 to 166 % (!!!) of the CPU capacity.
    My questions are:
    1. What does the ProTranscoderTool_sb do?
    2. Why is it in overdrive all the time?
    3. How can I stop it from doing this?
    MacBook Pro, 10.9.2
    Thanks,
    Klaus

It is creating ProRes versions of your clips in the background.  If you have recently imported a lot of clips or updated a lot of projects from iMovie 9 there will be a large backlog of transcoding to do.  Best to let it run while you are away from your computer for a few hours.
    Geoff.

  • Some incoming email run way beyond my screen as though the sender does ont have a wrap around. Is it my computer or the sender?

What can I do to wrap the massage lines to they appear on one screen. It only occurs with some, not all sendors.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service and ask if there is a "wrap" setting that can be turned on.

  • IPhone Email running in Conflict with Outlook 2007

the problem started the day after i synced the iphone for the first time and updated to the latest software upgrade.
I get a message in outlook when the iphone is attempting to access email that i cannot send or receive email on the desktop because another device is accessing the email account.
the problem occurs that some emails arrive on the iphone and some arrive on my desktop in outlook. it appears that iphone is attempting to intercept emails. while most emails arrive on the desktop, the iphone only receives some. sometimes the emails arrive in both places and other times only one place.
originally the i set up the email manually duplicating the pop3 and smtp server settings. email worked for three weeks. then i synced and the outgoing mail would not work. i resolved the problem by setting the password and user in the primary smtp outgoing server. Then the pop3 incoming server could not connect.
after reloading the email account all seemed to be working.
this latest problem appears that the iphone and outlook 2007 are in conflict with no winner to be set.
    my ISP is ATT.

This is a problem with a POP account when accessing the account with more than one email client.
Although it is possible to access a POP account with more than one email client, a POP account is designed to be accessed with one email client only.
When accessing a POP account with more than one email client, only one email client at a time can check the incoming mail server for new messages and/or download new messages received at the incoming mail server. When a 2nd email client attempts to do this while another email client is doing the same, the 2nd email client will be temporarily blocked by the incoming mail server. This has nothing to do with transferring the account settings from your computer via the iTunes sync process.
Not a problem with an IMAP account which is specifically designed to be accessed with more than one email client.

For some reason just launching Mail on my iMac has started to take a long, long time. Little happens for at least a minute and then when I click on a received email it also takes ages to open and view. I have just installed the new operting Software (Mountain Lion) hoping this would correct the problem, but it seems even slower, infact it's just quit at launch.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
