Emailing (mailto link) issues.

I have an app that I am working on- which is a library of pdfs. It was created in InDesign for Digital Publishing Suite.
We are trying to create a (button) that is a mailto link and it opens the mail client on the ipad and sends a linked title to the user.
This works - although the only issue is that the link is either truncated and/or does not work when the recipient opens the email.
Here is an example of the mail to link:
mailto:?subject=Download: Tip Laser Guide&body=<div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:16px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-top:16px;color:black;”>Your requested information:</div><div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:700; font-size:18px; padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 20x;”></div> <div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:14px;padding-bottom:0px”><a href=”http://www.google.com/”>Click here to download the Tip Laser Guide Sell Sheet.</div> </div>
The urls that we use as links are incredibly long approximately 100 characters- because the pdf names are very long. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I saw that National Geographic had created an app and it worked great with the mailto links although they weren't adding links into the body of their emails.

hi Hank! thank you for replying- I thought the same thing until I found the following link and learned that in InDesign it is different apparently although i'm finding my mailto doesn't work even though it is formatted perfectly.

I want to post a quick update solution to the issue I was experiencing in Indesign.
General tips for mailto urls with html formatting in InDesign and how I got it to work:
Here is an example of my mailto url that I pasted into the drop down in indesign on a button that didn't work:
mailto:?subject=Brochure Download&body= <div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:16px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-top:16px;color:black;”>Your requested <em>Forkk®</em>Information:</div> <div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:14px;padding-bottom:0px”><a href="http://www.urlhere.com/pdf/library/forks/Good%207000%20Series%20Forkk%20%20-%20Brochure%20 -%20SIPB-1022_0112.pdf">Your Good Information Link Name</a></div>
This is why it didn't work properly:
1.) spaces in the pdf name
2.) Formatting on the - a href
Solution:
The primary problem was the Indesign formatting on the apostrophes in the <a href> tag. The solution was to have the URL enclosed in the <A> tags without apostrophes. The spacing in the filenames was a secondary issue and also needed to be removed.
This example would work perfectly:
mailto:?subject=Your Brochure Download&body= <div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:16px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-top:16px;color:black;”>Your requested <em>Forkk®</em> Information:</div> <div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight:100; font-size:14px;padding-bottom:0px”><a href=http://www.google.com>Click here to download your ForkK Brochure ></a></div>
Hope this helps someone~

  • Unable to send (email/mailto) links, etc in FF 3.6

    In Firefox 3.6...
I use IncrediMail as my default e-mail client, and gmail as a secondary. When I right click in order to send/e-mail a link, absolutely '''''nothing happens'''''. I've already tried everything I know of in options -->applications -->mailto (settings). What else can I do? Ideas... Anyone?

To make Firefox use Incredimail for mailto links, do the following.
    1. find the path to Incredimail on my Windows 7 machine it's:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\IncrediMail\Bin\IncMail.exe" (you can find this by right clicking on the desktop Incredimail Icon and selecting Properties. Copy this address))
    2. Type about:config into your Firefox location bar and hit enter. If you've never edited used about:config before, you'll see a warning.
    3. Click "I'll be careful, I promise!" This will bring you to the about:config window.
    4. In the filter field type "gecko". Find the entry gecko.handlerService.schemes.mailto.0.name;
    5. Right click and select Modify.
    6. Paste or type the Incredimail path in the field provided "C:\Program Files (x86)\IncrediMail\Bin\IncMail.exe" (the qoutes are required)
    7. Make sure that network.protocol-handler.external.mailto; is set to true.
That worked for me after many hours of searching and finding answers posted by individuals who wanted to help but didn't have a clue.

  • Email Address Link Issues

Ok, I like to think that I am able to understand the basic items in this program. That being said, there are small parts that would make me pull my hair out, if I had hair. I have a form that I have finished up. At the bottom of the form there is a line that says if you have any questions please call or email this address: [email protected] , there is nothing else after the address other then a print button a bit lower on the page. As you know, Adobe reader will automatically change this into a hyperlink to email. The address in the new email that opens is: [email protected] I can not tell where this refunds is coming from. Can anyone provide me any advice on where to look?
    Tim Henderson

I would be more then happy to forward the form to anyone who would like to see the way I have put it together and can help me with this.

  • Bug in editing email addresses - Mailto: link doesn't update

Numbers has a bug in the way email addresses work when they are edited. When entering an email address, it automatically is recognized as an email address and is made blue with a mailto: link when you hover over it. But when you edit the address, the text is changed but the _old link_ stays.
    Try this:
    1) Enter [email protected] in a cell and hit enter. The address shows up blue and hovering shows the mailto:[email protected].
    2) Triple click to the right of the text (so you don't activate the link). This selects the whole text. Type a new address [email protected] and hit enter. The new text shows up blue.
    3) Hover over the cell to see a surprise. It's the old link!
You can also do it like this:
    1) same as 1) above.
    2) double click on the cell to make the cursor appear in the cell. Using the arrow keys, edit the email to [email protected] and hit enter.
    3) Hover. The link is not updated!
    Or like this:
    1) same
    2) using the arrow keys, come to the cell. Click once to make the cursor appear. Edit. Hit enter.
    3) same problem!
Here's the only way that seems to work:
    2) using arrow keys, come to the cell, do NOT CLICK. Start typing - this will replace the entire contents of the cell.
    3) hover now shows the correct link.
So editing an email address in Numbers does not update the link. You have to completely replace the email address.
I discovered this while trying to figure out why people whose addresses had been updated were not receiving email, and happened to hover, and saw the old address in the mailto: link.
I am now going through all my email lists, hovering to see if the link is what it's supposed to be, and correcting the ones that are wrong. If you have updated email addresses in Numbers, you will no doubt need to do this as well.
I sent Apple feedback, and also called them. They are able to reproduce the bug and escalated it. Does anyone else have this issue with email addresses in Numbers?
If so, please send feedback to Apple at
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/numbers.html
    and let them know.

    Terrell,
I understand your feelings. Until we're familiar with a process, and especially if the process isn't well enough documented, it may seem to be poorly thought out (designed) or even improperly executed. It's been my experience through about four and a half years of Applecare support that after you've been watching this forum for six months or so you know more about iWork than 90% of the first responders at Apple Support. The bottom line is that if you're passionate in making your case about something that you are having trouble with, it's pretty easy to convince them that something is broken when it may be just fine. The worst several months of my computer life experience came after that support crew led me through an ill-advised and improperly executed OS reinstall, for no good reason. But I digress.
So how do you want the Hyperlink insertion/editing process to work? The current process is as follows:
To insert a Hyperlink, you type in a URL or email address and Numbers makes a guess as to what type of link it is. That couldn't be much easier. You can override the link-type designation in the Inspector.
Then you decide to give the link an alias. You open the Hyperlink Inspector and deactivate the links using the "Make all links inactive" checkbox so that when you click on the link text in the cell it won't go into operation. You enter the new name for the link in the table cell, reactivate the link by un-checking the "Make links inactive" box, and you're done. At this point the link address is displayed and efficiently editable in the Inspector text box and the alias is displayed in the table cell. Pretty unambiguous and convenient. There may be other ways to get to this result, as often is the case.
But you say: "I don't care about making an alias, I just want to edit the actual address." Well, you have to use the Inspector, or you have to start over. That's the price for having the option to add an alias. It's a design decision, and a feature, but not a bug. Could it be enhanced for convenience? Of course it could. Perhaps an "Edit Link" option on the contextual menu that would take you directly to the Inspector would be nice. But let's not make this program any larger and complex than it has to be. And, let's be sure that the things we escalate to the design team are really the things we want them to be spending their limited time on.

    Jerry

  • How do I get "mailto:" links to work with my web based email?

I use the web based email from godaddy.com called workspace. I can't get the mailto: links to work with firefox. I did find a code that makes the correct compose window to open up but it doesn't input the email address.
Also, a related problem with my email is that you can't copy an email address and then paste the email address into the email. Pasting is not allowed with firefox but works ok with Internet Explorer

  • Outlook 2010 SP1 - mailto link fails when forwarding an email to someone?

This works fine in OWA so it is a client Outlook 2010 SP1 problem.  To recreate it perform the following:
    1. Email yourself from an EXTERNAL email address
    2. Within Outlook forward that email to another person in your environment internally (your external email address shows in the body of the email as mailto:
    [email protected])
    3. When the person receives the email get them to click on the mailto:
[email protected] link in the body.  Outlook will not put the email address in the TO field as expected, but will put the whole link in - ie the TO box will show [mailto:[email protected]].
If you click send it fails as this isnt a proper email address.  It will auto resolve eventually in Outlook if you have the external email address as a contact, so remove any cached entries for your external email address before performing the test
    4. If you do the same using OWA it works OK
Is this a bug that has been fixed?  The same problem is listed on Experts Exchange here:

  • FF10 Mailto links to gmail no longer populate email address, subject, or body.

I click a mailto link and this same link (craigslist links) has always populated email address, subject, and body. Now it does not do any of that. Anyone know what the problem might be?

thanks for checking! after numerous tests, i've realized that it must be because i have gmail set as my default email client. so... although gmail recognizes html text links, flash not so much. at least i can stop driving myself crazy with the flash file!

  • How do I change email client when clicking mailto links?

I have reformatted my computer about 1 month ago. Everything almost as I had it before. Just 1 thing that is bugging me.
'''My email client is IncrediMail'''. When clicking mailto links in Internet Explorer, my IncrediMail opens as it should do, but in Firefox (which is my preferred default web browser) it opens another tab, wanting me to sign in to GMail to compose my mail.
I do have GMail accounts, '''BUT''' I want Firefox to open up my IncrediMail to compose my emails, just like it did before my reformat.
Any ideas would be gratefully received ;)

To make Firefox use Incredimail for mailto links, do the following.
    1. find the path to Incredimail on my Windows 7 machine it's:

  • Mailto links not opening new Yahoo email

When I click on mailto links or right click and choose send link Yahoo mail opens, but does not go to a new email. It used to work fine. I recently installed Firefox 6 beta. Should I revert back to an earlier version or is a fix on the way?

  • Mailto links open google (desired) but load in current tab, moving away from website, and cannot hit "back" button to return.

I have firefox set to open "mailto" links, which is desired. However, when clicking the link, the gmail compose window opens in the current tab/window, and therefore leaves the website. Most of the time, the "back" button is not active, so I cannot get back to the website. The back button issue does not happen 100% for some reason.
To further explain, this is a website I am creating, so I am not sure if the fault lies with my code or in the google mailto option in firefox. (Code shown below)
    >>>>>
    <a class="email" href="mailto:[email protected]">email: [email protected]</a>
    >>>>>
I tried using a target in the mailto link, but they seem not to work with mailto links like they do for links to other webpages. (Code shown below)
    >>>>>
    <a class="email" href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">email: [email protected]</a>
    ---or---
    <a class="email" href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_new">email: [email protected]</a>
    >>>>>
Any pointers will help. Is my code bad? Or if the problem is with firefox's way of handling mailto links, is there a way to code to get around this?

I don't wanna claim total credit for it. I remember seeing someone mentioned a Back button problem with McAfee Add-on in the forum. I dismissed it initially because it seems far-fetched...

  • Email mailto function

Here's my problem. I'm pretty new to web design, and I've hit
a glitch. I am working in Dreamweaver MX on a mac platform
The website I have designed has a considerable amount of
email links. I have used the "mailto" function on all of the links.
When I test the mail to links on a browser, it immediately goes to
my Mac Mail account. When my client tried the mail to links on his
computer (Windows) he gets a no-functioning mail program. From what
I've learned or understand, these are POP (Post Office Protocol)
mail programs. How can I get Dreamweaver to use an IMAP (Internet
    Messaging Access Protocol).
My client and I agree that most people use their ISP email
accounts more than any other. Is there a code or function I'm
missing? Does this involve Cold Fusion. An quick answer would be
    appreciated.

The mailto:[email protected] simply opens the user's default
email client, as far as I understand it. The issue isn't your site,
its the user's default email client configuration. I'm not sure
there is anything you can do here. Instead of using mailto: links,
you may want to use something like
    formmail.php

When I click a mailto link, I would like to be able to have it open a new window/tab, not open my webmail (yahoo) in the same window. Also, when I click said mailto link, I have issues with the link sending the correct info to yahoo. I'm sorry you're having problems with the email services.  The issue you're describing is related to the timeout feature of the website; for your security, the website will timeout and require you to login again in order to access information and/or process a request (such as sending an email).  The issue of the timeout comes into play when writing a long email or allowing the page to sit without making any movement or changes; typing in the email window does not constitute active movement.  What I would suggest is that when writing a long email, use a word processing program (like Microsoft Word) to compose the email, then sign-in to your email account and copy/paste the message.  This way you will not lose your email or have to worry about the timeout feature.  Also, if you have email programs on your computer (i.e. - Outlook Express, etc.), you can configure those to work with the Verizon email service so you'll no longer have to login to the website for access.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks!

  • Microsoft Outlook 2010 Error "Another version of Outlook is currently running." when clicking on a mailto link

Our company recently upgraded from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2010. The mailto links on an intranet work fine on local computers running Outlook 2010 but on the terminal servers, users are getting the following error:
"Another version of Outlook is currently running. Close it and try again."
I have made sure that Outlook is the default mail client.
Home & Business Click2Run has never been installed on the terminal server.
The error happens in standard as well as safe mode.

    Hi,
What program is set as default for mailto?
Have you installed Home & Business Click 2 Run before? There is a limitation in click 2 run version that the mailto is trying to use your older version of Outlook.
If this is not the situation, try to test this issue in the safe mode.
    Click
Start, point to All Programs, and then point to
    Microsoft Office.
    Press and hold the
CTRL key, and then click Microsoft Outlook.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Office program, we can try to disable them.
Please also set Outlook as the default email client on the computer.
    ======================
    For Windows Vista/Windows 7:
    1.
    Click Start.
    2.
Type "default programs" in the Start Search box.
    3.
Click Default Programs under Programs in the search results.
    4.
Now click Set your default programs.
    5.
Highlight Microsoft Office Outlook or Microsoft Outlook on the left.
    6.
Click Set this program as default.
    7.
    Click OK.
