Embarrassed to ask

I'm a little embarrassed to ask these questions but here goes. I would like to use a quicktime movie on my site but I don't know how many people actually have the plug in (I've ruled out flash for now). 1. Is it possible to have a pic in place of the movie for those who don't have the plug-in so that they don't get the big blue Q?
2. What exactly is a poster frame?

You can always put a line saying that they need to have QT to see the movie and provide a link to get it, if they don't have it. So that if they get the big Q they will know. Everyone has at one time or other met that even with flash. I think people are used to it now. Beside it is up to us to educate the windows crowd. I provide links to firefox and safari on every page I make.

I feel like a blithering idiot having to ask this question but when I post a question on the Discussion Board and someone replies to my post how can I reply to them? I set no Reply link to click. I've had this problem for some time but I've been too embarrassed to ask for the solution. It's good to know I'm not the only blithering idiot out there though. I just spent over one hour on the phone with Verizon tech support and after that hour of trying they couldn't figure out how to do they reply either.

I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
Repeat for other accounts.

It is possible the versions you have are not compatible with your new Mac. Could you please tell us the following:
1. What OS are you running.
To get this info, click on the Apple on the top left, then select About This Mac. The OS X version is there.
2. What are the versions of the apps that are giving you problems?
To get this info, double click on the hard drive icon and open the Applications folder. Select an application and right click on it. Then select Get Info. The version number is there.

Please can you send me a fix for the error message that starts up when I open Firefox. It says " well this is embarrassing," and asks if I want to close the tab

Please can someone tell how to fix the problem I have with firefox on a mac OS. When firefox opens it comes up with an error message " well this is embarrassing...." and continues to ask if I want to close or restore the tabs that are open.

Almost too embarrassed to ask

I just finished reading through the first 14 pages of postings here and I'm more frightened of doing the OS X thing than ever. What are you people talking about? Permissions? Keychains? :<)
My work Mac is a blue G3 with OS 9.1, which seems to suit my needs just fine. (Ignorance is bliss?) But the real crux is that I am increasingly being barred from websites that I need (my own bank's bill pay system for one) that will no longer recognize Explorer 5.0 or Netscape 6.0. I think those are as high as you can go without OS X, right?
I do have an OS X (Verson 10.0.3) CD I got from somewhere a while ago, which looks like an official install disk. I read the PDF "Read Before You Install" and my RAM (192MG) and HD (6G) are large enough. But I'm pessimistically sure that everything I currently use will stop working and some of this software can't be upgraded.
Is there something for me to read ...in plain English ... that could make my decision to take the OS X leap less intimidating? I mean I think I need a real See Spot Run piece to start out with.

The latest version of Netscape for OS 9 is 7.0.2 and the latest version of IE is 5.1.7. Both were released in 2003. Both can be downloaded from www.versiontracker.com.
As for upgrading to OS X it would it would be ill-advised unless you were also planning to upgrade all your software to OS X compatible versions. If you were to upgrade to OS X I would advise you to upgrade at least to Panther (10.3.x) The version of OS X you have is a Beta version and is not intended for prime time. I would strongly advise against using it.
Were you to decide to upgrade to Panther you can purchase a Panther installer package at www.applerescue.com.
If you stay with OS 9, then I'd suggest upgrading to 9.2.2. You can do so by downloading the updaters from Apple using the Software Update control panel. You should also install the firmware update if you haven't done so:

It must be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1 or higher. It's also highly recommended if you plan updating to OS X. Also, if you update to OS X you will need more RAM and a larger hard drive. OS X should be used with no less than 512 MBs of RAM for decent performance, especially on slower machines such as yours. OS X requires at least 4-6 GBs of free space during installation. You should also maintain at least 6 GBs or 15 percent of the hard drive's capactiy as free space whichever is greater.
If you do decide to install OS X I strongly advise that you purchase an external Firewire drive and make a bootable backup of your current installation in case there are any problems or if you decide to return to OS 9. If you install OS X you should reformat the hard drive beforehand. Be sure to reformat using Mac OS Extended (HFS+) for the format type.

Embarrassed to ask - monitor issue

When I'm bouncing between recording with a mic and listening, how can I make the mic silent when I'm listening (besides unplugging it)? Is there an automatic feature so that the mic will only be hot when I have the 'record' button in red on the recording track?
So basic, but can't figure it through the manual.

It depends on what gear you are using and how you are monitoring the mic signal.
If you are using software monitoring and monitoring it through Logic, it will only be "live" when a track is record-enabled.
If you are monitoring directly through the interface, then Logic has no control over the signal, and you must do it using the audio interface's features.

Embarrassed to ask re XP

I have Installed XP via boot camp successfully on a main drive partition.
I'm a novice user of XP: How can I make XP see the external HD connected to the Mac Pro (it doesn't) and show up on "My Computer" with the c drive and the optical drive?
Can it also see the other internal Mac HD's?

Hiding and clearing cells in WebI 4.0

Hi guys,
We are building a resourcing solutions which looks at exceptions between Timesheet data and Resourcing data, ie. the resourcing team want to be able to see that the time logged by consultants matches what is was planned by resourcing.
The WebI report is being built on top of BPC10.0 using a BPC planning model. Within the planning model the timesheet data and resourcing data will be stored as versions. We are able to build a WebI report from a BEx query on top of this model, but we are struggling with presenting the data as requested. Within the report resourcing want to be able to see the resourcing data and the timesheet data. What we want to do is compare the timesheet and resourcing versions, blank out any cells for dates where there are no exceptions, and remove any consultants who have no exceptions at all that week.
An example of this would be:
4th    5th    6th    7th   8th
Consultant A     Res      1        1      1      0      0
Time      1        1     1      0      0
Consultant B     Res       1       0       0      1      1
Time      0       0       1      1      1
So in this case we would want to completely hide the data for consultant A and show the data for consultant B in this format:
4th    5th    6th    7th    8th
Consultant B    Res      1       x       0         x       x
Time      0       x        1        x       x
Where x donates a blank cell.
The problem we have with the filters and conditions we have currently been working with is that either we are able to only blank out cells with no exceptions, or to completely remove any day with out exceptions (ie we would only see the dates the 4th and 6th displayed. We need to keep the week structure there so that the view is intuitive to the User). Neither of the "solutions" we are working on has the full functionality that we need and we can't find the middle ground.
I have searched the SDN for similar issues but haven't been able to find anything that really matches up to this. Apologies if I have missed a similar thread and am covering old ground, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone have a solution for these issues?

Apologies I should have posted the solution.
In the end it was quite simple so it makes me a bit embarrassed for asking the question in the first placeg. I am new to SAP though and my speciality is actually CRM rather than BPC or BI so I have an excuse. Originally we were using one key figure (sign data which showed how much time was booked) in our BEx query which was matched against two structures which were our timesheet and resourcing versions within our BPC model. We instead created 2 restricted key figures (timesheet, resourcing) and 2 calculated key figures (exceptions, exceptionssumperemployee) which allowed us to change how our data was represented. The WebI report was then built from this BEx query. We were then able to filter any consultants out where exceptionsumperemployee = 0 using the filter function within our WebI report. We were also able to write a formula within WebI which blanked out all cells on any rows where the exceptions = 0.
I don't know if it was the cleanest solution available but it certainly seems to work. Hope I explained myself coherently.

I have been unable to download a free upgrade for the Adobe Flash on my new Apple Ipad? Do I need to download through Cloud or just download as an upgrade on my Ipad? I had no idea how enjoyable and easy to use, it was or I would have purchased it much sooner. I am now playing games and reading, even though I have a Kindle e reader. I never dreamed I would enjoy so many games. I am definitely hooked on my ipad. Now, if some of you Tech Savvy experts can help me, I will truly be grateful. I have found the best help comes from you. I have tried the support service but they do not talk my language, ha ha. BeforecI discovered you guys and learned you are a gold mine of information, I was unable to get the help I needed. I know I always get the best and most understandable help, without hearing the condemnation for being so uninformed. Now I am no longer embarrassed to ask for help!

Flash does not exist for iPad. Apples decision. any games or whatever must be downloaded as apps, which of course can be based on Adobe AIR/ Flash packager, but they must be self-contained apps, regardless.

Help for a Creative begin

Hi,
I bought a Nomad Jukebox 60 GB Player second hand. Its about 3 years old and after checking in the product search I found that it seems to be out of maintenance. I have read as many threads as I can to find help, but would prefer some advice from another user.
I have the following 3 basic problems
1. Finding the driver
When I plug in my player I can't find the E dri've. I get the little windows sound indicating that its connected properly. And after searching through my computer eventually found it under My Documents. But it doesn't show up as an E-Dri've in the folders list.
Any ideas. I know I have to do something with the disk management but not sure what.
2. Backup
I want to backup the music that is already stored there, just to be on the safe side. The player contains a mix of .wma and .mp3 files. Can anyone recommend a good, easy to use backup tool that works for both .wma and .mp3. I am working with a Windows Xp OS on a dell Laptop.
3. Putting music on player.
Again fairly basic and am almost embarrassed to ask this. I have a good selection of music in my windows media player. With my previous mp3 player (support plus) all I had to do was stick in the usb and drag over the music files I wanted.
I guess I should convert this music to .mp3 files to work on creative right What is the best way of doing this, while maintaining sound quality, tags , and also playlists.
So thats it. Sounds pretty basic, so I am sure someone can give me a few answers. They would be much appreciated.

You probably have a Zen USB2. The player is about 4.5 years old and indeed, it is no longer a supported product.
1. You will not see an e: dri've when you connect the player to your system, it is not a USB Mass Storage device.
2. You'll want to download and install the drivers, and MediaSource, from the Creative site so that you can backup the content that is on the player.
3. You'll need the drivers and MediaSource to put music content on to that player as well. You should not convert your WMA tracks to MP3, the Zen will accommodate either format, converting content from one lossy compression format to another one will just cause degradation of the audio quality.

Purpose of '% Complete' field

I'm almost embarrassed to ask, but what is the purpose of the '% Complete' field? The mouse-over on the field heading states that it is "...the percentage of the task's duration that has been completed."
Therefore, is it simply a field to indicate what percentage of a task's expected duration has elapsed? e.g. if we have a task expected to take 10 days and 5 days have passed, % Complete = 50%? If it's this simple, why not have it auto-update
every time the project file is opened? What is the point of having to manually enter values in '% Complete' or 'Actual Duration' to update this field? And, in the example above, why would someone ever want to enter anything other than 50%,
e.g. 75%, if only 5 days of the tasks expected 10 days of duration have elapsed?
For a seemingly simple field, it raises a lot of questions as to why one would ever want to use it... '% Work Complete' seems a lot more intuitive, yet '% Complete' seems integrated into more base functionality, such as progress bars on Gantt charts.
Thoughts anyone?

Well, I suppose your assumption that it conveys important information is incorrect. Or at least, it conveys what it is, and no more. Maybe you should ask the typical PM what he gets out of it. If he is unaware of what it means or measures and/or if he is
reading something into it that isn't there, then that's hardly the fault of an innocent number.
The % Complete field is no more or less obscure than any of the others. It's just one of them, and it is usually well and truly buried in the tracking table, out of the way. The problem occurs when people insert it into the entry table and start putting
numbers into it (based on what?).
The task bar is not like a thermometer. Its length is duration on a timescale. The progress indicator on it can't (sensibly) be anything except duration, and that duration is from the actual start to the complete through date. You can see this in the definition
of the bar in format, bar styles. You can't (sensibly) overlay a progress bar expressed as % work on top of a bar which is duration. You may as well try to overlay a "progress" bar which is the cost represented as a fraction of the duration. It's
length would be:
duration1 = (actual cost/total cost) x duration.
You could use this fraction of the duration in a formula to calculate a custom start1 and custom finish1, where start1 = actual start and finish1 = actual start + duration1. Then you could format a thin bar style to go from start1 to finish1. So although
its technically possible (I've done it) it is a lot of effort for no useful result.
The thin black progress bar is most sensible when it is seen as duration and nothing else. It is perfectly meaningful and intuitive if you know what it means, and nonsense if you think it means something else.
Intuition is over-rated, it is so often wrong. For example, intuition must be what makes people think that planning backwards from a finish date is a good idea.
In what way do you use 5 complete for reporting? I see almost no use in reporting progress in terms of % complete, but everyone asks for it. I guess it gives them comfort but it does not give them much information, except what they read into it.

Button activation

I am embarrassed to ask this question. But how do you
activate a button that is embedded in a movie clip? Do you use the
linkage properties to export for ActionScript or is there another
way?

My apologies, Shandy. Sometimes it takes knowing the solution
before knowing if you are experiencing the same problem or one best
asked elsewhere.
Nonetheless, I'll summarize my solution here rather than make
a new post to simply do so.
In my case, I created the problem by attaching a onRollOver
call to the parent movie clip. By doing this, I couldn't assign new
button states to it's children. The solution is to use another,
perhaps invisible button that is not part of the parent, or create
the button with something that is a child just like the other
children, which will be buttons in themselves.
Gizay, there a lot of things that could potentially cause you
to not be able to target your sub-buttons (like my example), but in
general, you can simply target it using a relative path from you to
the target. For example, in my case, I'd target the sub-button from
the root like:
parent.child.onRollover=function(){trace("hi")};
but if I were writing my code from the parent's timeline
(which I try not to do), it might look like:
child.onRollover=function(){trace("hi")};
You can also target from a child of the parent, to another
child, which might look like:
this._parent.child.onRollOver=function(){trace("hi")};

Help with creating a poster presentation?

I'm a little embarrassed to ask this question, but I need help getting started with using InDesign to create a scientific poster. This is really pathetic, I know, but the last time I used an Adobe product to make a poster was quite a few years ago, and I used, I think, Dreamweaver at that time. Today, earlier, I asked on this forum whether I should again try downloading a trial version of Dreamweaver to make a scientific poster (3 feet x 4 feet), and I was advised to instead use InDesign. Fair enough. But, I'm totally lost as to how to start with InDesign for this purpose. I want to create a poster-sized (3 ft. x 4 ft.) document, add several columns of text, 4 or 5 graphs, a couple of photos, and that's it, so this will be very simple. I need to get started on creating this document quickly, I'm running out of time. Does anyone know if there is a template for this type of document that I could easily access to get started? I would greatly appreciate any hints you might have, and sorry for being so slow to catch on---

Not that I am discouraging using Indesign (I love it and use it for just about everything), but if you are short on time did you ever think of just finding a place that has free templates (maybe powerpoint) or something like that and using it as a base for your poster? If it's a simple poster, I have grabbed them from http://www.makesigns.com/SciPosters_Templates.aspx and just used it as a base for making mine.
