Embedded devices for J2ME implementation
Where to start looking for an embedded device which will support J2ME with a CDC config and a Personal Profile?
Background:
I want to port a J2SE application to J2ME but i cant find an embedded device that has network capabilities, and at least 20 MB of RAM.
do u mean download via a datacable, or wap?
via datacable is much better for developers, however, most manufacturers in their infinite wisdom have stopped using datacables.

Open source, object-oriented embedded database for J2ME
For J2ME-based devices that require embedded data management, there is now an open source, object-oriented embedded database for J2ME called Perst Lite.
Perst Lite can be downloaded as part of the Perst open source embedded database package, at

Hi everyone, I don't know if this is the right topics, but here you can find a lot of J2me programmers...
I want to buy a J2me enabled phone, because I need to test games that I developed. But some devices are not useful for this, for example Sharp GX10: it has a IR port, but you can not use it to download code.
Do you know which devices can I use to download and test J2me programs? I know that Nokia 7650 can... do you know others?do u mean download via a datacable, or wap?

Flash Player Development for Embedded Device
I recently submitted a request for the Flash Player Lite and
Flash Player SDK. The website told me I would soon be contacted by
an associate with instructions on how to download the tools to
build a flash player for my embedded device. Instead Adobe forwards
my request to a 3rd party consultant that wants to charge me NRE to
develop the tools for my target and an expensive license fee for
each unit I want to put the player on. Since when does Adobe charge
a licensing fee for it's player? They are obviously endorsing this
if they have a contract with this company.
Does anyone know a way I can get the tools to build my own
Flash Player that will run on my device. The device is custom made
hardware using an i.MX32 ARM processor and Windows CE 5.0.Adamee -
I went through the same cycle you did. I'd like to add that
it's my understanding that there are two components to the costs of
the 3rd party integrator's solution, an NRE, and a per device
license fee. The NRE is significant, but I understand that the 3rd
party needs to be compensated for their effort. I sensed that the
~$10 per device costs were driven by adobe. From a cash flow
standpoint, $10/device might not be that bad for a low volume
design, and if you're moving big volumes the price goes way down.
All around, it's not a bad deal if you have more cash than
technical resources.
However, I must admit that I'm disappointed that I have not
been able to find another licensing path except through the third
party. I will mostly likely not be able to justify the NRE but have
the skills (I strongly suspect) to perform the port myself. If
anyone knows how to contact adobe about licensing Flash Lite 3,
please let me know (don't call customer service - it's outside
their scope).

Are Palm OS or Pocket PC viable markets for J2ME?
Hi,
On the current issue of JDJ, there is an article called "J2ME: Has it time finally arrived?" where the author talks about how J2ME is becoming more mature on the cellphone market. But then the author says:
Again, we're talking mobile phones here -- PDAs running Palm OS or Pocket PC just aren't a viable market for J2ME development as of yet, because they have alternative programming tools and languages and generally more open platforms.
Is this true? Judging from personal experience, plus threads in this forum like Open letter to SUN to produce a JRE for Pocket PC, there seems to be some truth to this claim.
I would like to hear other developer's opinions on this. Has your company abandoned Java development on Windows CE (or Pocket PC) and moved to .NET Compact Framework instead? Or is your company perfectly comfortable with using Java under those environments, except for a few hiccups? Why or why not?
Thanks,
Nicolas RiveraHi Nicolas,
Is this true? Judging from personal experience, plus

some truth to this claim.Unfortunately there not exists a supported free JVM for Pocket PC 2003
devices, there exists some commercial implementations but I haven't found a truly RAD tool to develop java apps for this platform.
I've suffered with pain the old embedded Visual Basic and Visual C environments from Microsoft for mobile devices and I'm suffering the Compact Framework. They've created an acceptable tool like Visual Studio but it's not much better than alternatives with Java.
I can't believe Sun would have surrender to Microsoft in this apps market but I think they've done it.

I've heard of some companies developing Java apps in a PC environment and then deploy them in PocketPC by using only the right subset of classes.
Hope this helps.

Hello !
I am new in J2ME programming so i am interested in what mobile phone is the best for programming for J2ME and what OS should it have to be easy programming, i know that Java is platform independent,so what mobile is best for programming on J2ME so what mobile you suggest me?First of all, it will depend on what physical features you need (filesystem, bluetooth, camera, GPS, etc) which depends on what you wish to develop.
Then you should look at what models implement those features. J2MEPolish' page can be of good help here:
Finally, each vendor has it's special quirks. For instance, with SonyEricsson and Nokia, you will get tons of security messages whenever you do anything but the most trivial, unless your midlet is signed. Samsung's UltraTouch models give poor error descriptions when your program has faults, implements fewer of the optional APIs than what the device in theory could support, and have small bugs that can be very annoying depending on your needs. (For example you can't use the GPS through the Location API unless you have GSM coverage, which makes the device useless here...). Other devices will probably have their own funny points, but on paper, I think Blackberry looks very promising.

Flash Lite 3 on Linux Embedded Device
Hi All,
I can't seem to get a definitive answer on Linux support. I
am building a small hand held device for home controls automation,
it will have a 3.5" touch screen display and be using embedded
Linux as the OS. I want to use Flash Lite 3 as the UI for the
device, is this supported?
Thanks,
MarkAbsolutely, in fact several versions already exist on Linux
devices. Linux is a reference port for our latest Flash Lite
player, which makes it easier for OEMs to bring Flash to their
platform. -

Solaris Cluster and Global Devices for sapmnt
Hi,
IHAC that is considering using Global Devices for /usr/sapmnt in a SAP environment, since they need all SAP nodes looking for the same sapmnt area. Is this a recommended approach?
Generally, we are working with S11.1/Solaris Cluster 4.1 to implement Netweaver 7.2 and ERP 6.0.
I appreciate your comments.
Regards, Rafael.Hi Rafael,
/usr/sapmnt is a file system, as such I assume when you ask about usage of global devices you really mean to ask about using a global file system (ie. an UFS file system with mount option global)?
If that is true, then the answer is yes.
The data service guide for SAP NetWeaver (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E29086_01/html/E29440/installconfig-10.html#installconfig-34) does mention in the section "configuration considerations":
"The SAP enqueue server and SAP replica server run on different cluster nodes. Therefore, the SAP application files (binary files, configuration files, and parameter files) can be installed either on the global file system or on the local file system. However, the application files for each of these applications must be accessible at all times from the nodes on which these applications are running."
And the deployment example in the appendix (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E29086_01/html/E29440/gmlbt.html#scrolltoc) makes use of a global mounted /sapstore file system.

Missing libraries for j2me?
Hi!
I have source code for Jess (java expert system) written in J2SE that I am trying to compile for J2ME. Of course, I keep getting compilation errors, since J2ME does not have e.g. java.util.Iterator or java.io.Serializable. What can I do (if anything?!) to solve this problem? Jess folks do not have a mobile device version. Are there additional libraries for J2ME I could download and happily compile my code? Thank you, I am really stuck with this!
-BusoHi Buso,
I am not sure if its a good solution, but you can try it as follows :
Use the source code that comes with Java SDK (src.zip in sdk ), extract the classes (and their dependant classes) to a different folder, compile them and make your own jar file. Keep this Jar file in in WTK's Lib folder.
I suppose this should work.
Cheers

Anyone out there ever get the SIP for J2ME API (JSR-180) working on an actual device, like a PDA ?
I can get it to run with the nokia emulator but other then that it's been pretty much useless to me.
Would the full blown JAIN SIP API be better for high end PDA usage ?
TIA
AnoopHi Anoop,
Did you get the SIP application working on device. I am trying to run Wtk2.5 "GoSip" App on the device but didn't succeed but was able to run on emulator. While running on emulator I started the SIP server from File->Utilities and entered the local machine name as a proxy host and it ran successfully on emulator. Can you tell me what server to use, which proxy host to enter and what all other changes do I need to do while running the same example on the device. Or were u able to run any SIP application on device? Please help.

Subscription based licensing for J2ME
How do you do automated subscription based licensing for J2ME?
I want to set the payments on a monthly basis and lock the license with device IMEI code and system time.
Is it possible to automate the license generation process?>We have a 16 core SQL Server 2012 Enterprise License for a server.
>Question 1: When installed, does this mean that SQL will only use 16 physical server cores even if
the server has 24 >cores in total?
No. If you have 16 core licenses, you are not permitted to run SQL on a sever with more than 16 cores.
There is no technical limitation; you will just be out of compliance.
>,
would you chose to have more cores OR a faster processor.
Always favor faster cores. SQL is licensed by the core, no matter how fast, and fast cores benefit
all workloads. But more cores only help if you have many concurrent users or parallel queries.

Any Embeded database for CLDC ?
Hi to all
Is there any standard embeded database for mobile phone application development. That embeded database can store in mobile itself. We can access this database using standard sql quires from MIDP. And also we cannot use HttpConnection and RMS Concept. We can write pure jdbc connection concept in CLDC application itself.
1. Embeded MySql support for this concept? If it support please provide the link for download and sampels codes.
2. Or suggess me can i use any other database for mobile without using a httpserver connection.
Thanks in advance,
Saravanan.KHi,
We are a startup mobile technology company. We have developed a complete relational database with SQL and JDBC support for J2ME platform. The CLDC 1.0 version is in beta testing and supports standard SQL including triggers. It is a small footprint database only 115 KB in size. It runs on any mobile which supports J2ME CLDC 1.0 / MIDP 1.0 or above. We also have a CLDC 1.1 database under development which will support support constraints like foreign key and check constraints. If you are interested in receiving a evaluation copy please email at [email protected]

Cibyl: C programming for J2ME phones
Hello,
For those that would like to program in C for J2ME phones, I'd like to announce my project called Cibyl,
http://spel.bth.se/index.php/Cibyl
which allows you to compile C programs into Java bytecode. It uses GCC to compile MIPS binaries which are then translated into Java bytecode. Cibyl supports a subset of J2ME with a C interface, but adding additional classes/methods is easy and semi-automatic, and it's also possible to mix C and Java.
I've also implemented Lessphun,
http://spel.bth.se/index.php/Lessphun
which is an implementation of the Mophun C API for Cibyl that allows Mophun games to be ported to J2ME phones.
Cibyl and Lessphun are free software (GPL'ed tools and LGPL'ed libraries) and implemented for GNU/Linux, although it should be possible to get working under other systems as well.
// SimonSure,
I've measured two programs: A* and a game-of-life implementation, implemented for both "native" Java and in C. The performance varies depending on the virtual machines - I've run them with gij, kaffe, sablevm and the Sun JDK vm (the two benchmarks are not dependent on the J2ME classes) - and the performance generally varies between 1.5 and 2.2 times slower than the native Java implementation (with exceptions - the A* benchmark was almost 8 times faster with Cibyl on Kaffe).
The two benchmarks were implemented in a "Cibyl-friendly" way, i.e., mainly using 32-bit types in the C code (I've optimized for loads/stores of these). 8- and 16-bit memory accesses are more expensive, but I've ported my boulder dash-style game from Mophun without changing the datatypes and there are no performance problems there anyhow - the time is spent in drawing graphics.
So I would say that the performance is acceptable, and should be comparable to implementations in native Java.
