EMC Replication Manager Client on Solaris 10 Zone?

Hello,
Hoping I could find out if anyone out there has had success running EMC's Replication Manager (client) on a Solaris zone where an Oracle database is running, and how it was installed. Normally we install 3rd party software on the Global host /opt, and then call the libs, etc, from the zone (the global host's /opt is made readable to the zone). An obvious solution would be to install the client directly within the zone, but should we need to add another zone for redundancy purposes (two hosts running one database each, should one host go down, we'd migrate it's zone w/ the other database over to the other host), we would have to install the EMC client (again), rather than being able to just call the same deployment from the Global host from within the new zone.
Any info or links to info would be appreciated. I tried searching around but didn't find anything.

Hi,
Thanks once again for reply!!
If you already installed Oracle Virtual Directory Manager on Sun SPARC, can you brief us pre-requisite setting and installation steps, so that we can follow the same.
Because, we are getting error in the initialization of installation process itself. So, I think there must be some configuration settings to be made.
We already raised SR (Service Request) with Oracle, bu there is no reply from their side till now.
I am waiting for your reply ASAP

  • Is anyone using the Enterprise Manager in the Solaris 10 zones?

I understand that Enterprise Manager is not certfied and supported in the Solaris

    Thanks in advance.

I already install Grid control 10.2.0.3 in Solaris 10 Zones environment. It works. But I don't know if Zones are certified and supported. Anyone can confirm it ?

While installing Oracle Virtual Directory Client on solaris 10, I am getting
"ovidm1014.bin : /tmp/install.dir.<number>/linux/resource/jre/bin/java: cannot execute" error while initiating the installer.
Can someone look into the message and advice me in overcoming the issue as we are held up on this for three days?

  • Veritas Netbackup Client Installed on Solaris 10 Zone Unable to Work

    Hi
I am having problems with Veritas Netbackup client which had been installed on a Solaris 10 zone only. We are using Veritas Netbackup server which is installed on a Windows 2000 server and the NBU server is unable to add the new client for backup.
The way I installed the NBU client was using the manual method where I installed directly on the zone. The zone I've created is a full root zone and the installation seems to be successful.
Somehow the NBU server just can't see the new client. Do I need to install the client in the global zone to make it work? Is there any checks I can do to make sure I have installed the client correctly and that the services are running in the solaris 10 zone side? Any kind of help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Xavier

    Hi mcbrune1
I've check on the services in the client and all 4 services were up and running. Than I realized that this client was hardened a few weeks back. So I checked on the /etc/hosts.allow file and added an entry to allow the Master server to communicate using bpcd.
Now the Master server is able to see the client and everything seems to be working. Thanks for your help.
    Cheers

  • Ports management in Solaris 10 Zones

    Hi,
I am new in this area. We have a software vendor who stated that their applications should be able to:
    - open TCP connections to ports in the ranges 21400-21404 and 50000-50199 on the server
    - telnet port 23 for Galaxy 2000, http port 80 for Viewpoint (Server); etc.
    - IngresNet is on listen address I3 (port 21400).
We have a Server & Storage infrastructure policy of implementing all Unix based applications on Solaris 10 Zones clustered on two nodes.
Will there be a problem with the vendor requests?. To me, it is about independent port management within Solaris 10 zones
    Thanks in advance.

Does this imply there are no ports which are common/shared between the Global and local zones.
If there are, does it mean that opening one in that group of ports in the local zone will automatically implied its equivalent in the global is also opened?

  • Will Hyper-V Replication Manager move a VM without shutting it down?

    Scenario
Let say I have two sites (Primary And DR). I have my production VM's running on my Primary Site.  If I protect them with Hyper-V Replica the VM is replicated and I can bring the VM up manually in the DR site. So I know that process work. I am trying
to minimize the outage of an app and the time it takes to bring the VM up and running. I have a database server in the primary site. I want to be able to move the VM hosting the database server to the secondary site without shutdown or with minimal downtime.
    Question
Can I use Hyper-V Replication Manager to migrate the VM with the database from the Primary Site to the DR site without downtime for the SQL server? When I mean downtime for the SQL server is that clients can continue to connect to the database and access
the data in the database while I am migrating the VM.
This is needed to maintain availability during DR testing of the Production environment.
    Thanks,
    Carlos

    Hi Carlos,
For DR drills you can use the test failover. A
test failover can spin up a test virtual machine for the production virtual machine. This VM can run in an isolated environment and does not affect the production environment. Your SQL server will have no outage while DR testing.
A test failover can be executed on an individual virtual machine or a recovery plan. This can orchestrate the drill as close to a real failover which recovers the application in a planned manner.
    Hope this pointer helps.

  • How do I get from Branded Zones to "real" Solaris 10 Zones?

My head is beginning to spin! I am beginning to think I have been led down a blind alley.
We have vast numbers of old Solaris 8 systems that we want to consolidate on new hardware in Solaris 10 Zones. We have been bombarded with advice that the way to go is to move it first to Branded Zones, as a stepping stone, and then migrate/upgrade it from there to Solaris 10. So we have started on our journey.
We now have our first bunch of Solaris 8 containers happily installed and running. And yes, it was relatively easy and painless, and the tool support was good. But now what? What are the steps and tools that will make the second step, from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10?
Everything out there hints that it is supposed to be easy. But every time I try and spec out the steps for our teams to follow I come unstuck. Does Live Upgrade feature in this anywhere? (And if so, at what point does my zone lose its Brand identity?) Is there some way to use archives? (And if so, how do I only include the bits I need to move?) Is there something magic under the covers of the Zone administration commands? (And if so, what pulls in my Solaris 8 stuff?) Is there at least some tool somewhere that will capture the configuration I need and build me a new one?
If the answer is that I just define the new Zone by hand and re-install all my applications from scratch, then can somebody explain just what I have achieved so far, and in what way it can be construed as a "stepping stone"?

Correct. But we have now invested in the time taken to learn about Branded Zones, do the migrations, teach the support teams how to manage them... Plus we are paying the subscription for the Branded Zone software. And we still have pure Solaris 8 applications staring end-of-support in the face. We could have made the same investment to re-install the applications in a real Solaris 10 Zone and make them work "properly". All the publicity tells me I've made my migration to Solaris 10 much easier, but I still can't see how I'm any nearer my end point. Here's where your losing it. There is no real distinction between what you call a normal Solaris 10 zone and a Solaris Branded 8 zone. They could have called it something else and you would still insist that somehow one is normal and one is not. There are a variety of Branded Zones. There's a Solaris 8, Solaris 9, and Linux Branded Zones. They differ from what you call "normal" zones in that you basically are adding an OS to the Base OS and are not just copying files from the Base OS. That's the only difference. In all other respects they are the same. The only differentiators is for a Branded Zone you are adding the files from some other OS, even if it's just an earlier version of Solaris.
How do you migrate from a Solaris 8 zone to a Solaris 10 zone. The same way that you moved from the Solaris 8 physical box to the Solaris 8 branded zone. The steps should be the same. Implicite_Order pretty much said the same thing.
You seem to have a hang up on the words "normal zone." Yea I know, you've spent time and money and educated everyone and now your looking for the payoff. As I already stated and has been echoed by I_O, contact the vendor to see if they have Solaris 10 support, if they do, create a zone on a dev box, do some testing, and then create the zone on the real box, do the install, migrate the data. Just as you already did from the Solaris 8 box. If they don't have a Solaris 10 specific version you can still setup a test box, create a "normal" zone, install the app and some test data, make sure it works, and then create the "normal" zone, install the app, migrate the data, and relax.

  • Parameters maintenance for Oracle 10.2.0.4 on Solaris 10 zone

    Hi!
We use SAP Solution Manager 7.0 on Solaris 10 Zone with Oracle.
We have updated Oracle from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4.
What are the parameter recommendation for Oracle 10.2.4?
What is the approach to do this?
    Thank you very much!
    regards
    Thom

    > Does the SAP installation usually include the setup of oracle parameters?
    partly.
    > Is there some automatic report that check and set up the valeus to the rigtht values, e.g. according to SAP note 830576?
No. Many of those parameters (the events mainly) depend on specific patches that need to be installed to activate them. Did you apply all the interim patches for 10.2.0.4 or just that patch?
    > What are the crucial/important parameters?
all of them are more or less important. Oracle is a complex beast.
    > If not, what are the technical steps to do this manually?
You can use brtools to change them one by one - or write a script like the following. However, this implies that all single/interim/cumulative patches are installed, not only 10.2.0.4.
Check note 1137346 - Oracle Database 10g: Patches for Release 10.2.0.4 for the single patches and read all the linked notes to the patches so you can built your own script to set the parameters.
This is an example script for HP-UX but you could use a likewise one for Solaris:
    alter system set
event='10027 trace name context forever, level 1',
'10028 trace name context forever, level 1',

  • Set rlim_fd_cur=8192 for Solaris 10 Zone?

    Hi!
I would like to install SAP Solution Manager 7.0 on Solaris 10 Zone (Sparc 64 Bit).
Unfortunately I could find the file etc/system. Instead I added the project file acording to SAP note 724713.
When I run SAP prerequisite Checker SAPINST tells me that the following will be missed:
    set rlim_fd_cur=8192 in etc/system.
    Question:
Do I need to add the file etc/system and add them the following commando:
    set rlim_fd_cur=8192?
Or does this commando not apply for Solaris 10?
    Thank you very much!
    regards
    Thom

    > In solaris 9 and below, it was needed to add the parameter in /etc/system. With solaris 10 no need.
    This is not completely true.
The number of maximum open files must be set in the global zone, otherwise you will run into problems once the total number of processes in all zones will be > 1024 - hence you need to also set this in Solaris 10.
A zone has no /etc/system thus that error can be ignored.

    Hi,
Where is the Replication management tool can be found in Oracle OEM10g Standard Edition...????
Is this contained only to EM java version.... in Oracle client...????
However , i have a doubt that the EM java version gives the capability for advanced replication.... whereas the standard edition supports only basic replication...Is that correct....???
If the above is true then... how to create an environment which gives the privileged user to select tables , columns to be replicated manually or using the scheduler...????
    Thanks.. a lot

  • We have a set of oracle clients running on T5220 zones that need some help

    Greetings all -
We have a set of oracle clients running on T5220 zones that need some help.
If, for example, I execute the query "select (all) from dba_objects", trace output reports 90% of the elapsed time spent under "SQLNet message from client".
Here are OS details for the clients: Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC
Running "uname -a" from the client gives:
    (SunOS bmc-ste-app 5.10 Generic_127127-11 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220)
Here are OS details for the dataserver: Enterprise Linux Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2
Running "uname -a" from the dataserver gives:
    (2.6.18-92.1.6.0.2.el5 #1 SMP Thu Jun 26 17:44:55 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
    The RDBMS is 10.2.0.4
Again, please note, there is no application in the picture here. We are just running a simple catalog query (select * from dba_objects) from sqlplus. Why the wait on something like this? The wait also occurs when a different query is used (select (all) from SYS.COL$ where rownum < 50000). And it doesn't matter if I used the full client or the instant client. I still get the same high-wait.
We had thought - maybe this is a network thing - so we put a test client on the same subnet as the dataserver. This helped - but not enough. The wait is still way too high even with firewalls taken out of the equation.
We've also looked at arraysize, SDU, kernel settings. And we've spent time going over tkprof, truss and sqlnet-tracing.
Has anyone ever had to solve this HIGH WAIT ON CLIENT issue? Is there a work around or some tweak I'm missing.
Is anyone configured like we are (linux dataserver, solaris clients)? If so - did you see anything like this?
    tia -

    Hello,
We have the exact same issue. Did you ever solve this issue? We have a t5220 and have just upgraded our 11.5.10.2 11i system on it from 9.2.0.8 32-bit sparc to 11.2.0.1 64-bit sparc. Things should be faster but arent, and our consultant has tracked it down to high wait times when the apps tier using forms connects to the database tier on the same box. So even though the t5220 is both server and client, there is something about the client sql connection.through TNS that his having trouble. Thanks for any information. We've also created an S/R with Oracle.
Note: I am well aware of the other issues with the CMT server series but this particular issue seems independent of the regular / known issues and remains a mystery to us. Other known issues with the CMT servers for SPARC:

  • How to install MS Windows in a Solaris 10 Zone (Container)?

    Hi:
I am a Windows expert because of my work but I am trying to get away from it at home while still being able to run Windows Applications in their native environment. So I read somewhere that is possible to install and run Windows in a Solaris 10 Zone (Container). Since I am not that experienced with Solaris a How-to guide to perform this task is greatly appreciated.
    Regards

This is impossible. containers are only paravirtualization which is essentially
a solaris kernel pretending to be two machines.
You need a true virtualisation solution like vmware.
I don't vmware supports using solaris as a server. Only a client.

  • Unclear on branded solaris 9 zones and ipfilter

I just managed to install my first solaris 9 zone on a solaris 10 system (v490). It has gone fairly well so far but I
am definitely "unclear on the concept" with respect to ipfilter and the zone. This is a shared ip zone.
On solaris 9 we use ipfilter 3.4.32.
I used a flar from one of these systems to install the zone. On boot, I see that our ipfboot file in /etc/rc2.d fails with
    modload failures etc
You must be superuser to load a module
open device: No such file or directory
open device: No such file or directory
    constructing minimal name resolution rules...
open device: No such file or directory
open device: No such file or directory
open device: No such file or directory
open device: No such file or directory
/etc/rc2.d/S65ipfboot: load of /etc/opt/ipf/ipf.conf into alternate set failed
Not switching config due to load error.
/dev/ipf: open: No such file or directory
This makes sense but as I said what do I do instead. I found this in the solaris container system admin manual
"Solaris IP Filter can be enabled in non-global zones by turning on loopback filtering as described in Chapter 26, Solaris IP Filter (Tasks), in System Administration Guide: IP Services. "
Yes, but that doesn't help me much since the IP Filter tasks simply tell me to do this in ipf.conf in the global zone.
    set intercept_loopback true;
Isn't there more to it than this? A real example some place would be most helpful. And how can I make sure it is working?
Not a real ipf guru :-(

First thing to check is if your zone can access the global zone (try pinging). If this isn't the case you probably need to setup a routing entry allowing the non-global zone some access.
For example, say the global is 10.0.0.1 and the non-global 192.168.0.1 on eri0 you'd use something like:
    route add 10.0.0.1 192.168.0.1 -iface
This tells your non-global zone that it can reach the global zone through the eri0 interface. Ofcourse you can also expand this to networks and such.
Another very important factor to keep in mind when dealing with internet is trying to access it from the non-global zone (as a test). Your ipnat.conf entry should be enough, my guess for to the reason for not routing the data is a non-static arp entry of your internet gateway. Now, this is a mere guess but if you have a default route in your routing table setup for Internet access (netstat -rn) make sure that the host to which the default route is pointing also has a static arp entry (man arp). If this is indeed the case you may also need to setup a routing entry as mentioned above to allow your zone access to this remote gateway.
After that things should work as usual. Hope this helps.
