Will Hyper-V Replication Manager move a VM without shutting it down?

Scenario
Let say I have two sites (Primary And DR). I have my production VM's running on my Primary Site.  If I protect them with Hyper-V Replica the VM is replicated and I can bring the VM up manually in the DR site. So I know that process work. I am trying
to minimize the outage of an app and the time it takes to bring the VM up and running. I have a database server in the primary site. I want to be able to move the VM hosting the database server to the secondary site without shutdown or with minimal downtime.
Question
Can I use Hyper-V Replication Manager to migrate the VM with the database from the Primary Site to the DR site without downtime for the SQL server? When I mean downtime for the SQL server is that clients can continue to connect to the database and access
the data in the database while I am migrating the VM.
This is needed to maintain availability during DR testing of the Production environment.
Thanks,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
For DR drills you can use the test failover. A
test failover can spin up a test virtual machine for the production virtual machine. This VM can run in an isolated environment and does not affect the production environment. Your SQL server will have no outage while DR testing.
A test failover can be executed on an individual virtual machine or a recovery plan. This can orchestrate the drill as close to a real failover which recovers the application in a planned manner.
Hope this pointer helps.

  • No Longer Able to Successfully Backup Hyper-V Virtual Machines from Host Without Shutting Them Down First

    Hi all,
Prior to the new year, I was able to backup my VMs (two of them) using Windows Server Backup on their host server (running Server 2012) without shutting them down, no problem.  Something has obviously changed, and this no longer works.
When I try to back up my VMs now, the process basically seems to timeout during the 'Creating Shadow Copy of Volumes' phase.  The error log file points to the 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' as the culprit (Status [5]; Unexpected Error), and the specific
message I receive from WSB is:  Component was skipped from volume shadow copy.  The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
    the error may not reoccur.
I've seen only a handful of useful articles online about this particular error, but nothing I've tried has worked for me yet, like:
    - Making sure the integration services are installed and enabled
    - Making sure Windows Server Backup is installed on both VMs
    - Making sure there is enough disk space in the VM for the backup to complete
The most compelling piece of information is that this process worked just fine before the new year started and now I can't make it work at all unless I turn off my VMs and then run the backup.  It just seems like there's some small thing I'm missing
(a service needs to be updated or turned off or on, etc), but I can't seem to find that information anywhere...
    Any help is appreciated.  Thanks...

    Hi aalbert140110
you may want to try using our VssDiag freeware to inspect your Windows and Hyper-V logs:

All you need to do is enter the date/time when the backup failed and it will collect whatever it finds

  • I have an MPEG4 movie running.  I don't know why but Quicktime Player will not let me open this file now to shut it down.  Any tips on how to do this?  I've tried installing an older version QuickTime Player 7.  OS Maveriks

I have an iMac with an OSX 10.9.5.  I have an MPEG4 program that is running.  QuickTime Player can't open it up for me to stop it.  What are my options?  I've tried downloading QuickTime Player 7, an older version but that hasn't helped.

Not sure what you mean then. Is QuickTime still open and playing the video? If so, do you mean you can't even get back to QT to shut it down?
Check the Dock for the QT logo. Click it to bring that app to the foreground. The menu bar then should say QuickTIme Player next to the Apple logo. Close the app and the video will shut down with it.

  • Managed Server state "STARTING" after shut it down.

    Hello,
I have a really odd situation here. I have a Managed Server with a "STARTING" state but it is really shutdown. I have tried to do "Force Shutdown Now" but the only I can get is this:
Status of Last Action = TASK COMPLETED
    State = STARTING
I cannot start the Managed Server because Weblogic says it is in an incompatible state. I have tried to restart the Admin server and delete the folder /cache and /tmp but I cannot solve it. Any help please? Where does WebLogic keep track of the status of its managed Servers?
    Thank you,
    Oscar

    Hello Fabian,
I am using Solaris(unix). The managed server is not running. At least there is no weblogic process running on that machine (ps -ef | grep weblogic). I will try tomorrow to search of the name of the managed server as you suggested.
It seems that the Admin server saves the status "STARTING" in any place for that managed server. Tomorrow I will also try to start the managed server from command line and later on shut it down from the Admin server(GUI). Let's see whether the managed server sends the notification to the admin server telling him that it was shut down correctly.
    Thanks for your reply,
    Oscar

  • I have had my I pad 2 for about six weeks with very little to complain about until today. My problem is that Sarfri ikeeps freezing or will not open at all.  I have tried shutting it down then when I reopen it still has the same page up ! Help,

    What should I do?

Try clearing its cache (Settings > Safari > Clear Cache and also Clear History), and also try closing the app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Ever since last week up to 2 weeks ago my browser will just freeze for no reason at all and even freezes my computer to where I have to shut it down! Help!

Ever since last week up to 2 weeks ago my Firefox Browser (26.0 Version) will just stop working and say (Not Responding) like ever 5-10 minutes, even reset the browser and even put it in Safe Mode still the same thing happened and it will freeze my computer to where I have to shut it down. Also I have run my Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus, malwarebytes, and superantispyware software (not at the same time obviously) still nothing and run C Cleaner, and then if I am watching a movie, listening to music or playing a game in the browser or Spotify it will say plug-in not working and asks me to shut it down, same thing will long scripts and I don't understand this I am at my wits end what do I do? Because this is becoming ridiculous real quick! Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me answer this question!

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.
    <!-- VERY important to include-->

  • Will it affect my iMac 21.5" GHz i5 if I shut it down by directly unplugging it from output?

So sometimes, I accidentally unplug my iMac from the output directly without shutting it down first. Will that affect it in any negative way?

    It can damage the directory*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Any files not saved at time of unplugging won't be recovered.
Some files being written at time of unplugging might get corrupted.  As the system can rebuild itself for the most part this issue is not a problem, but it can get to be a problem if done repeatedly.  Backup your data frequently.   And put the power cable in a place where it is not likely to get unplugged.

  • Hyper-V Live Migration Compatibility with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery Manager

    Hi,
Is Hyper-V Live Migration compatible with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery
    Manager?
I have 2 Hyper-V clusters in my datacenter - both using CSVs on Fibre Channel arrays. These clusters where created and are managed using the same "System Center 2012 R2 VMM" installation. My goal it to eventually move one of these clusters to a remote
DR site. Both sites are connected/will be connected to each other through dark fibre.
I manually configured Hyper-V Replica in the Fail Over Cluster Manager on both clusters and started replicating some VMs using Hyper-V
    Replica.
Now every time I attempt to use SCVMM to do a Live Migration of a VM that is protected using Hyper-V Replica to
another host within the same cluster,
the Migration VM Wizard gives me the following "Rating Explanation" error:
"The virtual machine virtual machine name which
requires Hyper-V Recovery Manager protection is going to be moved using the type "Live". This could break the recovery protection status of the virtual machine.
When I ignore the error and do the Live Migration anyway, the Live migration completes successfully with the info above. There doesn't seem to be any impact on the VM or it's replication.
When a Host Shuts-down or is put into maintenance, the VM Migrates successfully, again, with no noticeable impact on users or replication.
When I stop replication of the VM, the error goes away.
Initially, I thought this error was because I attempted to manually configure
the replication between both clusters using Hyper-V Replica in Failover Cluster Manager (instead of using Hyper-V Recovery Manager).
However, even after configuring and using Hyper-V Recovery Manager, I still get the same error. This error does not seem to have any impact on the high-availability of
my VM or on Replication of this VM. Live migrations still occur successfully and replication seems to carry on without any issues.
However, it now has me concern that Live Migration may one day occur and break replication of my VMs between both clusters.
I have searched, and searched and searched, and I cannot find any mention in official or un-official Microsoft channels, on the compatibility of these two features.
I know vMware vSphere replication and vMotion are compatible with each otherhttp://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.replication_admin.doc%2FGUID-8006BF58-6FA8-4F02-AFB9-A6AC5CD73021.html.
Please confirm to me: Are Hyper-V Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica compatible
    with each other?
If they are, any link to further documentation on configuring these services so that they work in a fully supported manner will be highly appreciated.
    D

This can be considered as a minor GUI bug.
Let me explain. Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica is supported on both Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V.
This is because we have the Hyper-V Replica Broker Role (in a cluster) that is able to detect, receive and keep track of the VMs and the synchronizations. The configuration related to VMs enabled with replications follows the VMs itself.
If you try to live migrate a VM within Failover Cluster Manager, you will not get any message at all. But VMM will (as you can see), give you an
error but it should rather be an informative message instead.
Intelligent placement (in VMM) is responsible for putting everything in your environment together to give you tips about where the VM best possible can run, and that is why we are seeing this message here.
I have personally reported this as a bug. I will check on this one and get back to this thread.
Update: just spoke to one of the PMs of HRM and they can confirm that live migration is supported - and should work in this context.

  • Lenovo C560 with Windows 8.1 (16-gb RAM) will not successfully load Windows Movie Maker

I loaded Windows Movie Maker 12 with Windows Essentials.  -This is exactly the same setup I am using on a HP desktop at work with Windows 8.1, but for some reason my C560 keeps giving me a "low memory" warning and will not load a AVI clip.  -Worse, after trying... my whole computer gets glitchy and nothing seems to work properly until I shut it down, and restart it.
Quick recap on what I have tried.  Upgraded from 6-gb to 16-gb of RAM.  Increased the size of my Virtual Memory as much as it would let me.  Nothing has made the slightest bit of difference.

If you have a flashlight available I would shine it into each of the USB ports to make sure all the contacts are aligned straight and to see there is no debris in the port that could be shorting out the data contacts.
Another thing to try is going into Windows Device Manager and uninstall the USB and then reboot the computer.  When the computer restarts it will again install the USB ports.  This procedure will make sure the operating system correctly has them installed.
If the USB ports are still not functioning I would recommend you contact Lenovo Support for warranty service. You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....

  • Hyper-V Replication over Dedicated LAN and "is alive" checks over Corporate LAN

I am testing Hyper-V replication to see if it will be a suitable replacement for the ArcServer RHA product.  One thing I am struggling with is configuring the replication to use the dedicated LAN, but still have the host servers verify over the corporate
    LAN.
I have seen the blogs on how to use a dedicated route and editing the hosts file to get replication to use the dedicated LAN, but that also changes the LAN in which the host servers communicate.  It seems to me that if the corporate LAN were to go down
on the master server, I wouldn't be able to fail over the virtual machines to the replica server without first having to connect into the master server through the dedicated LAN of the replica server to shut down the virtual machines.
I need to be able to fail over to the replica server if the corporate network connection on the master server drops without having to go through the extra steps of connecting into the master server first.
Is it possible for the two items to be separated?  Can I tell Hyper-V to replicate using one specific IP destination on the dedicated LAN and have the replica server check to see if the master is live over the corporate LAN?

    Hi Telrick,
    >> It seems to me that if the corporate LAN were to go down on the master server, I wouldn't
be able to fail over the virtual machines to the replica server without first having to connect into the master server through the dedicated LAN of the replica server to shut down the virtual machines.
I want to say that there are "planned fail over" and "unplanned fail over " , the latter applies the primary server crashing (you can select "failover" on "replica server " then the VM will start up ,after the primary
server online again you can do "reverse" )
The point is that you can not use hyper-v replica as a backup (it will lost little data which have not yet been replicated to replica server when "unplanned fail over" happens )
    Best Regards

  • Managing movie files on a MBP

Until the last month or so, I've used a powermac G5 as my computer. Now that I've added a shiny new MBP with a 750 gb drive, I'm having all the normal growing pains that come with such. Amazed with the speed boost, having to learn to deal with big time limitations on storage.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out managing movie files. Up until now, I upload most if not all my movie files from my iPhone or Canon 7d into iPhoto. Then later, open iMovie and it "sees" them and does what it does and so forth. Basically, I was using iPhoto and iMovie to handle movie files.
Now that I'm using a MBP, I don't know that I'm going to continue using the powermac G5. Not much, anyways. The speed is way to amazing with the MBP. Not only that, I'm using Aperture 3 for managing pics and it happens to upload videos. I posted in the Ap3 community a similar question regarding managing movies with my current setup.
Should I turn off the import movies option for Ap3 and only use iMovie to continue to manage movie files?
considering movie files, which are primarily HD ones for me now, I have iPhoto, iMovie, and now Ap3 that I can import movies to. If i were using a big desktop macPro with tons of HD space, I really wouldn't think much about hard drive space.
However, now that I'm entering the world of laptop computing for the first time, managing disk space (as you all know) is a specialty all its own, I'm learning quickly. As far as Aperture is concerned, I referenced all my masters off the HD inside the MBP onto an external drive so I can free up some space. I freed up almost 400 gbs!
Now I'm looking at how to manage movie files on a MBP.
Real world example: went to a concert last night, filmed over 2 hours of movie files of the concert. Before I import them off my iPhone, I'm wondering where in the world to import them to. iPhoto? iMovie? Ap3?
What do you all suggest I do with a MBP and managing movie files? Should I continue with importing to iPhoto and letting iMovie then "see" them and do it's thing? Or should I get another external FW800 drive and start using it just for movie files?
What would you long term users of laptops suggest as the best long term approach to managing movie files (which program, internal Vs external, etc) on a macbookpro?
    Thanks

It won't take too much time for your hard drive to fill up with movies you've processed through Aperture or iMovie. Many users opt to dedicate an external hard drive for their movie projects, and I can recommend the G-Drive and Seagate Go Drive for speed and reliability. I don't own OWC drives, but they're rated well, too. A one-TB drive will keep you going for a long time.
Process your movies as little as possible. Depending on he content, you can lose a little every time you transfer the data. Use a single format to manage your documents, since this will minimize conversion. Your process flow seems to rely on iMovie to manage movies.

  • How to change replication manager ack policy?

    Hello all
I have installed my Berkley_db and I enabled replication using the following command:
    -enable-pthread-api
Now, I would like to change my replication manager ack policy and perform some tests.
I know that I have to use this method:
    repmngr_set_ack_policy
However, I don't know how to call the above method...
Shall I insert an entry in a specific file?
Shall I give it as a command line?
I must note that I replicate some data in other three servers. The change of the ack policy will automatically work and affect all three servers or will I have to perform the changes manually on every one of them?
    Thank you in advance!
    Edited by: user546168 on 10 Δεκ 2011 1:13 πμ

    Hello,
    You can read about:
    DB_ENV->repmgr_set_ack_policy() at:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17076_02/html/api_reference/C/repmgrset_ack_policy.html
A few points to note are:
    0. You can set the ack policy programmatcially or via an environment
    DB_CONFIG file. If using a DB_CONFIG enter "repmgr_set_ack_policy"
a blank space and the ack_policy parameter required. For example:
    repmgr_set_ack_policy DB_REPMGR_ACKS_ALL
A DB_CONFIG file is read when the database environment is opened,
so it will overrule any configuration done before that time.
    1. All sites in a replication group need to be configured with the
    same acknowledgement policy.
    2. The DB_ENV->repmgr_set_ack_policy() method configures the database
environment, not only the operations performed using the specified
    DB_ENV handle.
    3. You can invoke DB_ENV->repmgr_set_ack_policy() method at any time
during the life of the application.
    Thank you,
    Sandra

  • DPM 2012 R2 and Hyper-V Replication, huge conflict and failure to backup

I have recently created new 2012 R2 servers with DPM 2012 R2 in attempts to upgrade an environment.
When attempting to create Protection Groups for Hyper-V VM, DPM will consistently omit any VM that happens to have Hyper-V Replication enabled, whether that server is the primary VM instance or a replica VM instance.  ALL other Hyper-V VMs are listed,
only those with Replication enabled are omitted.  This happens on both DPM 2012 R2 servers, exactly the same results - all VMs without Hyper-V Replication enabled are listed, none of the VMs with replication enabled are visible in the list.
Obviously we need to be able to backup VMs with Hyper-V replication since replication is only a tiny portion of a DR strategy, it doesn't cover ANY recovery scenario other than the loss of the primary VM - it doesn't allow for restoring any missing or damaged
files or undoing any other changes to the VM.
The DPM 2012 R2 server have the latest update rollup (#4) applied and the protection agents have also been updated.
Looking for some hints since DPM 2012 R2 is supposed to support backing up both the primary and replica VMs, especially when the Hyper-V host if Server 2012 R2.
Might have to use Windows Server Backup or Veeam's free Hyper-V backup since aside from enabling Hyper-V replication to keep a couple snapshots, DPM isn't a viable backup options in combination with Hyper-V replication.

    As per the following blog:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2014/04/25/backing-up-of-replica-vms-using-dpm.aspx
you should be able to backup Hyper-V VMs even if they are replica VM.
When you configure DPM to protect both primary and recovery hosts, VM will appear on any of the Servers as it will have the same GUID.
So, protect primarya nd recovery hosts using different DPM or if you want to protect both primary and recovery using same DPM, make sure that you check both servers so as to discover VM.

  • Replication Manager

    Hi
I am set up replication previously on 8i and 9i databases. I am trying to setup replication on 10g. Earlier I used to manually set up replication using APIs rather than using the Oracle replication manager.
Is it a good idea to setup replication using the replication manager? Does replication manager have any limitations? What will I gain if i setup replication manually using custom scripts?
    Thanks
    MG

The only advanced replication difference in capabilities between the replication manager and the API PL/SQL code I heard of is that you can replicate a subset of columns for a table with the replication manager only. Besides that, what you can do with one is possible with the other. My personal advice is to use the command line if you want to really learn this topic well.
