Enabling USB Headset

I am using ALSA and have setup the sound for my system (using the Arch ALSA page).
Everything works when I plug my headphones into the Jacks.
I am no trying to enable my Logitech USB headset.
The usb_audio drivers are loaded and I have set the headset as the default device using both asoundconf and by putting this in my .asoundrc (from official ALSA guide):
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1
Both approaches result in nothing comes out of my headset. The volume is non-muted in alsamixer (for both my sound card and the usb headset).

Is there something I'm missing here?
Thanks
Edit:
I've messed around a little with asoundconf and I can get sound coming from my USB headset when I use 'aplay'. However, when I use mplayer the sound still comes out of the jack and not the USB headphone. Does asoundconf not set system wide defaults? If not, how can I set the system wide default for this machine?
Edit Again:
The -ao alsa option to mplayer did the trick.. e.g
$ mplayer -ao alsa /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Side_Left.wav
Edit Once More:
Sound only comes through the left channel. Oh no.
/em goes off to read .asoundrc documentation

Seems related, but I don't know where to find the options mentioned in alsamixer.

Yes, I tried Side_Right and it still comes out of the left channel. Flash and mplayer both still have this problem. As far as I can tell it effects every program using sound on the system.
Still not found a solution, don't really want to go down the OSS or Pulse route.

  • Ventrilo, Logitech Premium USB Headset 350 and System Preferences

    Hi all,
I have some troubles using ventrilo on my G5 (same problems also on a new iMac).
Ventrilo is working, I'm using it with World of Warcraft, and using it with a Logitech Premium USB Headset 350 (but the problem happen also with Logitech 250).
After some times I'm using Ventrilo, this is very random, people in Ventrilo stop hearing me. I noted that opening the System Preferences, checking the Sound panel, the Logitech is selected as sound in, but the visual signal on the panel is blank (if I speak on the microphone no signal is visualized).
What I need to do is to disconnect the Logitech from the USB and reconnect it. I need also to exit from Ventrilo and relaunch it.
Then all is working good again, naturally till this happen again (may be 5 minutes after as 30 minutes).
I've also tried to remove Ventrilo and its preferences and reinstalling it. This assuming that the cause of all this is Ventrilo and not MacOSX. But this happen also on a new iMac...
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi Croma12,
The problem is not Ventrilo - it's Logitech's headsets and the driver software.
I have had both the USB 350 and USB 250 - each have the same problem, that is, not being recognized when freshly connected. It's a trip to the Sound Preferences pane each time to reset. Often we need to toggle the Mute checkbox to make the headset work.
Even worse, 90% of the time when I connect the headset, it freezes my MacBook completely, necessitating a forced restart. Not Cool.
I've combed through the Logitech support library and discussion forums - as a company, their Mac support is very poor, and their forum moderators know very little about Mac hardware.
To make the switching of sound sources a little easier, Google for "soundsource" - it's a menu-bar widget that will sometimes enable the Logitech headset without needing a trip to the Sound Preferences.

  • Strange audio produced when Dynex USB Headset is combined with Realtek ALC888

t seems that just when I connected my Xbox 360 pc controller, my Dynex USB Headset began acting up.
Whenever I use the microphone function, the audio comes out as though I was talking through a Nintendo Entertainment System (8 bit-ish sound), no matter what I play the sound through. (So it sounds the same, whether I play it through my Creative desktop speakers or through my headset.)
I've tried almost every kind of troubleshooting technique I could think of.
Removing the drivers then installing older ones worked for awhile, then began acting up again.
I tried rebooting (of course), that didn't fix it.
    Updating sound drivers; nada.
I recall disabling the sound chip through my BIOS, booting, rebooting, enabling it, then booting, although that only fixed it temporarily. I've tried the headset in another computer with the same OS, and it worked fine, so I don't think it's the microphone.
I've tried shutting down as many electronics as I could (cellphone, air purifier, xbox controller, unnecessary monitors, wireless mice, even lights), although nothing could fix the odd sounds.
Later, when I was completely cleaning off the Realtek drivers once again, I decided to just listen to sound trough my headset's earpiece. Everything had 8-bit sounds. Even music files, which originally played normally through my desktop speakers. However, I think my headset it still functioning ok from a hardware perspective, since I plugged it into my other XP machine, and it still worked fine.
    Computer specs:
        * MSI P6NGM-FD motherboard
        * Windows XP SP3
        * Realtek drivers, updated to R256
        * Dynex USB Mon Headset
Also, here's a small soundclip of me saying hello, then blowing on the microphone.

  • USB Headsets & voice chat in Second Life

I am curious if anyone else has attempted to try out the voice chat in the Second Life (v1.16) preview. I know this is a beta version and it may be a matter of things simply not working yet.
First of all, here are my hardware settings:
    • Power Macintosh G5 - 1.8 GHz, 160 GB HD (70 GB free), 2GB RAM
    • Logitech 250 USB headset
I have had the headset connected to all of the USB ports on the front and back of the G5, both ports on the keyboard and through a powered USB 2.0 hub with no change in performance or results. The headset works in Skype and GarageBand with no problems.
    Here's the issue...
When attempting to use voice chat in Second Life, I have only been able to successfully talk with other users on one occasion. Most other times, I either have no response from the mic, or no audio in the headphones.
This does not happen until I am running Second Life and attempt to enable voice chat, but the effect is system-wide once it happens.
I suspect it is a problem with the preview version of Second Life and or its voice system but I would appreciate any thoughts anybody might have.
    Thanks!

Issue is more widespread than originally thought. Re-posting in proper venue with more specifics.

  • Microsoft LX 3000 Lifechat USB Headset

I have been using this headset for a long time with Mac OS X 10.5 and ever since a few OS X minor releases I am having a very odd problem using Gizmo VoIP: if I select this device for the output, it works fine. Also, if I select it for the input, it works fine.
However... wait for it... if I select it both for input and for output, the output comes in 2x more speed, like those old LPs in wrong rotation. It's weird because it started with my iMac and then, when I updated my MBP the same started to happen. Does anyone have a slight idea of what can be causing this?
    Thanks for any insight.
    Best regards,

    I found the solution ...
To enable my USB headset, I had to disable my motherboard
built-in sound card in my PC BIOS.
When I did so, PRESENTER 6.1 is using the only microphone
avalaible : the USB one ...
But it is strange that PRESENTER 6.1 does not provide the
    input card choice ...
Every other sound software I know does (like audacity and
    so...)

  • On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Why does the "USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices" keep coming up after I unplugged the usb device?

On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15", that I purchased a few weeks ago, started coming up with the following message on my desktop:
"USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices".
I unplugged the device and the message still keeps coming up.
This is what I have done so far to troubleshoot:
I shut down the laptop. When booting up I pressed the command+option+p+r at the same time. It comes up with a menu to reinstall OSX, Get help online, Run Disk Utility, etc. I choose the disk utility and repair the disk and then restarted.
The message keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Why does the message keep popping up even though I don't have any devices hooked up to the laptop at all? Any help to reenable my usb ports and get rid of the messaage would be helpful.

I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
    1. Reinstalled OSX
    2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
    1. Turn Power off.
    2. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
    4. Wait 15 seconds.
    5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
    6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.

  • How to enable USB 2.0 on the MEGA 651 - found a way

    Very important question...
How did you guys enable the USB 2.0 ports? I plugged a device in the front ports today, only to be told that there are no USB 2.0 drivers installed...
The MSI CD that came with the MEGA only has drivers for W2k, and my XP installation won't recognize them... (kind of idiotic, considering MSI strongly advocates using the 651 with XP !?) BTW, I have WinXP SP2 ...
*edit* I figured out the procedure - allow Windows Update to operate automatically, reboot, make sure you've enabled USB 2.0 in BIOS, then when everything's up and running again, just plug in again a 2.0 device... the machine will do the rest... just don't do what I did... on the first try, I realized all this time I had my USB 1.1 keyboard plugged in... :D
Also, how did you get the modem to be seen/properly installed by the system? No conflicts with the other devices?

  • XFCE USB Headset issue

XFCE has very annoying behavior with USB headsets.
If I plug it in and select the headset via the xfce mixer sound just continues to play though my speakers. the only way I've gotten it to play out of the headset is installing pulseaudio and pavucontrol, in pavucontrol I can go to the playback tab and select the mic per application and then it works, but this is a PIA. I have properly setup pulse audio as far as I know, with pulseaudio-alsa, alsa-plugins, and an asound.conf file.
I'd like it to play sound out of my headset in every application automatically when I select my headset in the mixer, and out of the speakers when I select the speakers, like gnome and kde do. Is there anyway to do this?
    Thanks

Freaky, but you're right, it works.  I was just in the middle of a garageband recording when my headset (Logitech, not sure on model) kept disappearing on me.  I got a message saying it was disconnected when it was not, then it would come back only to have the same thing happen several seconds to minutes later.  Finally it left and wouldn't come back.  I rebooted thinking it was up too long (I've gone ninety days between reboots easily).  No dice.  So I found this.
Plugged it into a powered usb hub and it's back.
Very strange indeed.  Have any advice on the SD card slot refusing to see the same card every few uses?  lol  I love my macbook pro but this weird stuff... it's just beyond me now!

  • USB Headset Prob

Hello, I installed a SB X-Fi XtremeGamer a few hours ago and I encountered some problems. The card and the software included work normally when normal speakers are connected, however, my USB headset (Speed-Link Medusa 5. USB) does not seem to cooperate with the new card. It seems that the headset uses its own "drivers" and actually bypases the sound card, if that is even possible. I tried changing the sound input and output settings from a "USB Audio" entry to the "SB X-Fi" one, but then it all went mute.
Does anyone have a solution please? Is there a chance I can get my headset to work with the new card?
    Thanks in advance?

    You answered your own question,
It seems that the headset uses its own "drivers" and actually bypases the sound card,?
You want to use that headset with your sound card you're going to need to find an adapter for the USB connection so you can plug it into the card, or get a headset that isn't USB.

  • USB Headset Works in One Port, Not the Other

When I got my headset (Logitech) it worked perfectly just after plugging it in and using it. It worked while plugged in to either of my USB ports on my laptop. Recently however, it has not worked at all while plugged in to the port on the left, while it still does work when plugged in to the port on the right.
If I open iTunes while plugged in to the non-working left port and make sure to change my system prefs so that the input and output use the Logtech USB Headset, then I hear no sound of any kind. If I then simply plug the USB headset into the other side of the computer without changing any settings, it works fine. This is new behavior as it used to work in both ports.
Another thing to note is that the volume control buttons on the headset still work even when plugged into the USB port that doesn't play sound. Also, I successfully plug in my printer, mouse and other devices to both ports and they all work fine.
I've tried repairing permissions, repairing preferences, and restarting, but nothing has helped so far.
Any ideas on why this would happen with any device?

Which operating system are you running? I have similar problems in a configuration with and iMac and a Macbook, but haven't tried to switch the system around. see this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2112054&tstart=0
My problem arose when upgrading the iMac to run OS 10.5.8.
I'll try this tomorrow and see if my problem is similar to yours by swopping the system around

    Are you looking through Thunderbolt? You can do it on your model with 2 Thunderbolt displays according to Apple Support document;
Thunderbolt-capable Macs, with discrete AMD Radeon graphics can support up to two connected Apple Thunderbolt Displays.

  • Can't enable USB Mass Storage

I am trying to use recovery software (Recuva) to replace deleted photos. When connecting to my laptop, I can only choose Media Device (MTP) or Camera (PTP). Recuva cannot find my phone without USB Mass Storage enabled but that option seems to no longer exist? What can I do to enable this?

You need to enable USB debugging on phone, so the computer can see it as a storage device.
Go into Settings, then scroll down to the bottom and click on About Phone.
Scroll down to the bottom to where it says “Build Number”.
Tap on “Build number” 7 times. After the third tap, Android will start counting down on how many taps are left before you can access the developer options, with a playful “You are now [insert number of remaining taps] steps away from being a developer”.
After the 7th tap, you’ll get a “You are now a developer!” message.
Now, go back to the main settings screen, and voila, the “Developer options” menu will be visible at the bottom, just above “About phone”!
    Developer options->enable USB debugging
