Enabling web sharing

I'm trying to use web sharing but get a "Forbidden 403" message. I tried to implement the fix at http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25038?viewlocale=en_US but had the following problems: 1 - No prompt appeared as mentioned in step 6, 2- Terminal would not let me type in my password as required in step 17. Can anyone tell me how to make this procedure work?
Thanks,
Larry Emery

Dunno how to fix your problem, as web sharing works flawlessly for me, but you can bypass it by downloading MAMP. This might be overkill, as it will run Apache (the same web server software that comes with Mac OS X), PHP and MySQL, but it's really easy to install and get running... basically, just put the folder in your Applications folder and launch MAMP.

  • Web Sharing + Remote mysql Access

Hey! I just had a quick question.
I'm a developer and I was wondering how to enable Web Sharing to allow my PHP code to access mysql databases remotely.
Currently, my web sharing and php and stuff like that work great, but I get the following error whenever I try to connect to a database.
"Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/private/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /Users/matt/Sites/bio/web/dbconnect.php on line 2
Could not connect: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/private/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)"
I'm pretty saavy with software, but anything dealing with firmware or hardware, I am very much humbled. Can someone please help with enabling access to connect to a remote mysql database?
    Thanks so much.

Nah I haven't actually physically installed it on my computer. I didn't think I had to install it, since I already actually have the database built that I want to connect to.
    Should I install it, then?

  • Web Sharing, Firewall, & Security Issue

I recently turned on/activated Web Sharing, but I forgot to turn on the Firewall. Now I think I may have gotten malware, or some other sort of bad stuff on my machine.
Am I right in this thinking? If so, what steps might I take to offset the damage? Thanks.
Quick background note: I was experimenting with the using the Apache server that comes built in with Mac (because I'm learning mysql, php, etc.) And this tutorial mentions the importance of activating the Firewall if the user turns on Web Sharing http://www.macinstruct.com/node/112
    Specs:

I didn't know about Quarantine being included in the Leopard OS ("Quarantine is a feature of Mac OS X introduced in version 10.5 (aka Leopard)) Thanks for pointing that out.
More generally, I've been using Macs for several years and really like them, but this was the first time I activated/enabled Web Sharing for using the Apache server software and so I was just a little worried about that. And also, it seems as though my system has been working more slowly than it usually does.
BTW: I did some of the most commonly suggested steps for improving performance.
    1. Check to see I have latest OS updates. [Done]
    2. Run/verify/repair disk permissions via Disk Utility [Done]
    3. Clear browser caches [Done]
    Thanks again.

  • Web sharing starts but will not turn off

I have enabled web sharing and been running successfully for a long time, recently upgraded to Lion.
The problem I have now is that I can turn Apache on through the Web Sharing prefs but it will not turn off, technically that not true as the instance is killed off but something is restarting the httpd processes (new pid's). As far as the Pref pane is concerned Apache is off (un checked box), though in reality, a new instance is running.
The only way to turn it off is by su apachectl stop.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Adam.

Have you tried to hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds or so, until you see a silver apple. See if you can get it to reboot.

  • System Preferences - Web Sharing...

I've enabled Web Sharing and have been using it without issues, but recently (within the last week) I noticed that in the Web Sharing properties, where is usually displayed the "computer's website" and "personal website" url's as being "http://ip address/" and "http://ip address/~shortname" now says "http://my computer name.home/" and "http://my computer name.home/~shortname".
So I changed my computer name to something different, restarted the computer, and it still says the previous computername.
Apache still works, but it just bothers me that A. something has changed that I don't know about, and B. i want it to say my ip address or something I set it to.
Can anyone tell me how to change this or fix this or figure out what's happened.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
    Thank you.

@Reetnem: I'm not sure what causes that to change. I ended up reinstalling Leopard which fixed this, cause everything went back to the default!
I removed everything relating to Apache, which no doubt broke it and I spent over 5 hours trying to fix it, which I ended up accomplishing, but it just didn't feel right that my system was so screwed up, so I reinstalled.
I still want to know what changes this, so I'll keep researching. If I found out I'll post it here!

  • Web Sharing Problem

    Hi all.
I want to create a localhsot conexion. Y enable web sharing in preferences and introduce into the correct site my index page. But when i put http://localhost
it say me "You don't have permission to access / on this server."
    Thanks for all

Simple...Your website address is not localhost. It will be exactly what is stated at the bottom of the Sharing preferences window when you select Personal Web Sharing:
View this computer’s website at http://ipaddress/ or your personal website at http://ipaddress/~yourusername/

  • Start web sharing with terminal

    Hi All
in os 10.6 I can start web sharing simply using this command in the terminal:
    sudo apachectl start
this is the same that enabling web sharing in the system preferences.
Now in os 10.7 it don't works.
    Using
    sudo /usr/sbin/httpd -k start -D WEBSHARING_ON
it seems works but system preferences still show web sharing disabled and after restarting computer, web sharing is disabled
    someone can help me?

Perhaps you're thinking of the SnowLeopard behavior. In Lion, starting Web Sharing is not exactly the same as starting httpd. Please inspect the contents of org.apache.httpd.plist, before and after starting Web Sharing in System Prefs, and it will help you understand. Before, you'll see something like:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key><array>
         <string>/usr/sbin/httpd</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>FOREGROUND</string>
    </array>
After starting it, you'll see the WEBSHARING_ON flag added:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key><array>
         <string>/usr/sbin/httpd</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>FOREGROUND</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>WEBSHARING_ON</string>
    </array>
And, have you noticed that even if you load the launchd.plist with -w, the Disabled flag in the launchd.plist is always set to True? That's because the actual state of the launchd job is reflected in this file:
    /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist
Finally, apachectl start/stop simply loads and unloads the launchd.plist.

  • Web Sharing not working

    Hi,
I enable Web Sharing under System Preferences, but when I click the link provided, I get this error: "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." What can I do to fix this? I'd greatly appreciate any help (I'm running Lion).

  • Web sharing/Apache not working

My web sharing doesn't seem to be working.
When I have it enabled in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences, I try to click on the link
    My Computer's Website
    http://myIPaddress
I get an error message, in both Safari and Firefox, saying that I cannot make a connection to the server. This is similar to other threads in this section except for the following:
    - I do have a /var/log/apache2 directory
    - I did a chmod 755 on the directory
    - the directory is empty
    - http://localhost does not work
when I look through a list of my tasks (on the Activity Monitor), I don't see anything related to apache so I'm wondering if my Web Sharing has not initiated the apache server.
    I'm running 10.5.6 on a PowerBook G4.
    Thanks in Advance

You shouldn't see any apache items in Activity Monitor. I've got web sharing on, and I see a bunch of httpd processes in Activity Monitor. Try repairing permissions on your hard drive. Also, look for some config files located in /etc/apache2/. I see the following files/folders in there on my machine:

  • How to do web sharing windows xp to site on macbook?

I've created a website with iweb '08 on a macbook, 10.6.8.  I've clicked on "web sharing" in system preferences.  My ipad can access the website on the macbook, but my windows xp desktop can't open it but doesn't say "server not found"  it opens a page about APACHE.  Is the problem on the macbook or on the desktop?  And how can the problem be solved? General Information: (a) All computers are in the same wireless home network.  (b) The pc has never been able to reach shared documents on the macbook, but the macbook can access shared documents on the pc.

Your post was almost a year ago but whatever.  It sounds to me like your pc is going to the library/webserver/documents folder to pick up your site.  But your site is most likely in your sites folder under your profile.  The addresses are different: 192.168.0.1 or whatever ending digit yours is and 192.168.0.1/~username, respectively.  Yeah, there are two different website folders. You'll see the Apache index.html in the docs folder.  Hey, at least you know "it works!"; now just replace the index doc and put your resources in there and you're hosting (port forward your router and it's on the internet for sure with your external IP as the address, otherwise it's just local).  Also, you must not have file sharing between mac and windows (windows file sharing or smb protocol or something like that) enabled on the macbook; hence, no shared docs folder.

  • PERSONAL WEB SHARING ON iMAC G5 WILL NOT START

    hello:
i am hoping someone would be able to help me on this issue. i attempted to start the Personal Web Sharing service on my computer (iMAC G5 with MAC OS 10.4) from System Preferences > Sharing. however, after i highlight Personal Web Sharing on the list of services and click the Start button, the message changes to "web sharing starting up..." and simply remains that way (i've waited for a long time). it does not change to "web sharing on".
am i doing something wrong? is it possible that my Apache installation has been compromised? my goal is to be able to use my computer to create and run .php web pages.
any help / suggestions are greatly appreciated
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry, this still doesn't seem to be working.
Actually, it's me steering you wrong. It's been a while since I fooled around with the Entropy PHP installation and it looks like he's changed it.
He used to put the configuration stuff for PHP at the bottom of the main Apache config file, but now he's putting it in that separate file in the httpd users directory. That's why moving the default Apache configuration file into place didn't help.
You have two choices: one is to just forget about the PHP5 stuff for now and go with Apple's default PHP install. The other is to try to get PHP5 up and running.
The first option is very easy: just run this command:
<pre class="command">mv private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf ~/Desktop</pre>That will put the offending file on the desktop. Now try starting the web server. Most likely, PHP won't work yet, but Apache should start. In order to use the default PHP5, you need to make some changes to the httpd.conf file. You can use pico in the Terminal. It's pretty simple and the key commands are printed at the bottom. Where you see the up arrow listed, that means to use the "control" key, i.e., "control"-x to exit. You need to use sudo, though so you have root privileges:
<pre class="command">sudo pico /etc/httpd/httpd.conf</pre>Search ("control"-w) for "php". The first line you'll see is this:
<pre class="command">#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so</pre>Uncomment it by removing the "#" from the start of the line. Search again until you find this line:
<pre>#AddModule mod_php4.c</pre>Again, remove the "#". Now search again until you find these lines:
    <pre class="command"><IfModule mod_php4.c>
    # If php is turned on, we repsect .php and .phps files.
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
    AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
    # Since most users will want index.php to work we
    # also automatically enable index.php
    <IfModule mod_dir.c>
    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
    </IfModule>
</IfModule></pre>Just verify that they look like these. If they don't, copy and paste your corresponding lines into a reply. Now stop and restart the web server and see if PHP pages will work. You should be using OS X's built-in 4.x version.
If, on the other hand, you'd rather use the Entropy PHP5 installation, post back and tell me and we'll see if we can figure out what's up with that...

  • Can't get Web Sharing to Work

I can't seem to get Web Sharing to work internally or externally with the AE. ON the G5 with MacOS 10.5.6, I have Web Sharing turned on under Sharing, Security > Firewall allows all incoming, Network configured as DHCP with IP 10.1.4.
On the AE, under Internet > Internet Connection I have Using DHCP, Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address. Under DHCP I have a DHCP reservation for my G5 10 10.1.4. Under NAT, I have enable default host at 10.1.4. I currently have NAT Port Mapping Protocol on and have Web Sharing configured (though I have tried with it off).
Under System Preferences > Sharing and Web Sharing selected, when I select my computer's website I get Safari can't connect to server. Same when I try to access a web page hosted here via dyndns.
So, there must be something I'm doing to cause this but I sure can't figure it out.
    Any ideas?
    Ed

Solved. Just did created /var/log/apache2 directory and a chmod 755 on the directory.
Had to keep digging through discussions to find it.

  • Personal web sharing+php 5.2.2

I installed PHP 5.2.2 for Apache 2 (I'm working on making a simple photo gallery) and it worked just after i installed it but it didn't give me any errors when my code didn't work. But now whenever I try and start web sharing it just says "web sharing starting up..." and stays like that. looking at the console I see a error:
    Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
Syntax error on line 8 of /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so into server: (reason unknown)
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
any ideas on how to fix this? I tried reinstalling PHP but it did not help.

    Hi--
but i still have the problem of just getting back a
blank screen when there is errors in my code. This
makes it very hard to trouble shoot what is wrong
    with my code.
You have two choices here. One is to just read the Apache error logs with the Console app. Otherwise, you'll need to find the php.ini file and enable sending the errors to the browser (they're off by default because it's something of a security risk). This page has pretty good instructions for doing that. His directions give the php.ini file's location as /usr/local/php/lib/php.ini, but mine, using the Entropy PHP5 distribution is at /usr/local/php5/lib/php.ini (note the extra "5").

  • How to Remove & Re-Enable Web Services on LaserJet printers supporting ePrint

If your LaserJet printer has been disconnected from or failed to connect to Web Services, you may need to power cycle your printer to reconnect.  If that does not resolve the problem, you can remove web services, wait 30 seconds, then re-enable web services to re-establish your connection to ePrint and Print Apps. Note: this last step will result in a new email address being assigned to your printer.
How do I remove HP Web Services for my LaserJet printer?
Print a configuration page from your product, and locate the IP address.
At your computer, open a Web browser and type the product IP address into the address line and press Enter. The HP Embedded Web Server opens.
Click the HP Web Services tab.
Select the option to disable Web Services.
How do I enable or re-enable HP Web Services for my LaserJet printer?
To use HP ePrint, you must first enable HP Web Services.  Re-Enabling Web Services uses the same procedure as enabling the Web Services.
Print a configuration page from your product, and locate the IP address.
At your computer, open a Web browser and type the product IP address into the address line and press Enter. The HP Embedded Web Server opens.
Click the HP Web Services tab.
Select the option to enable Web Services.
When Web Services are enabled, ePrint information appears in the HP Embedded Web Server. Look for the e-mail address that is automatically assigned to the product. The product also prints an HP Web Services information sheet that contains this e-mail address and instructions
If you were unable to register your printer in www.hpeprintcenter.com within 24 hours of printing your information sheet, you must re-enable the printer code by reprinting your information sheet.  The information sheet will also provide your email address if you have forgotten it.
How do I print the Web Services Information Sheet for my LaserJet printer?
You can only add the printer to your HP ePrintCenter account within 24 hours after printing the information sheet.  You can re-print the information sheet at any time from the printer control panel.
Print a configuration page from your product, and locate the IP address.
At your computer, open a Web browser and type the product IP address into the address line. The HP Embedded Web Server opens.
Click the HP Web Services tab.
Click the Print Information Sheet button.

  • Please tell me how to reinstall Personal Web Sharing

I did something to my Personal Web Sharing. I thought maybe it was the file permissions but they seem to be right. Owner is "myusername" and group is also "myusername". In any case Personal Web sharing will NOT turn on. Do I have to reinstall the OS X? This will be a pain since I have to start from the install cd's and work my way up to tiger. Seems like there should be an easier way, like can someone just give me a copy of the folder? Would that be the same for a g5. I am on tiger.
    thanks,

I don't know which log you want but I looked in the filemaker server log. I wouldn't think the filemaker server has anything to do with why the personal file sharing can't be turned on? This was earlier today anyway.
