Encrypted MAC

hi,
we are trying to compute the encrypted MAC to send as a part of the external authenticate command. to compute the encrypted mac we need to compute the MAC session key by performing a ECB encryption on Derivation Data and Station MAC key (as described in page 204 of the global platform card specification Fig D-5). I wanted to know how to perform the ECB encryption ??? It cribs that there is no ECB class or com.ibm.opencard.access.DESSecureCredential class.
We are able to compute the host cryptogram by performing a triple DES on the host and card challenge with padding and ICV as 0.
Help needed desperately.

ECB is a form of 3DES. It's provided with your JCE provider. Don't look for it in your OCF, you should be doing the encryption with a JCE provider.

  • Can't restore to factory settings due to encrypted Mac HD

II've really messed up. A few weeks ago I encrypted my Mac HD and received a long 24 figure passcode, which I still have. Yesterday, I was having issues with my Mac (Mountain Lion) and I went to restore to factory settings. I have no T-MOBILE back up and put all my files on and external HD.
the the issue I have is that in Disk Utility my Mac HDR is now untitled and I can't do anything with it. I can't turn off the encryption either because the long password and my usual password won't work. When I try to erase the now untitled HDR it says "are you sure you want to erase the partition "untitled" and create an encrypted partition? i do this but nothing really happens except for the HD now becomes "Encrypted Partition".
iif I try to reinstall the Mac OS X I eventually just get to a grey "stop sign" screen. I've really messed up here and I think its due to me having encrypted the drive. I've resorred to factory settings once before when I thought I was selling my Mac and there were no issues. Please help as I have to get on with my MA.

    Hey,
Im a little bit confused about your posting. You wrote that you tried Ubuntu but have you installed Ubuntu and deleted Vista or was it just a Ubuntu live disk?
The Toshiba HDD recovery function is described here:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm
But one point more: The HDD recovery works only with preinstalled Windows version from Toshiba so if you have installed another OS or did an upgrade, this option doesnt work anymore.
And youre right: The notebook doesnt come with Toshiba recovery disk because you have to create this disk yourself using Toshiba recovery media creator that is preinstalled. This tool will create a bootable disk with an image of factory settings that can be restored every time in contrast to HDD recovery that only works with original installed OS.
To cut a long story short, just order a recovery disk from Toshiba and install it. Then you have factory settings back :)

  • Encrypting Mac OS X Lion-10.7.5

I am encrypting right now. It says it will take 24 hours until its finished. My internet service sporadically turns on and off where I live. What if my internet goes down while it is encrypting. What will happen after internet turns back on. Will it damage Mac? Will encrypting continue where it left off? Will it be OK?

    spidermonk,
if you’re encrypting your disk with FileVault, then you don’t need to worry about intermittent Internet availability damaging your Mac; FileVault encryption is completely independent of Internet access.

  • .mac encryption not compatible with popular AIM certificates

I recently switched on encryption in iChat AV 3. I was happy to test it out with my family, who use .mac screen names in iChat. I was bummed, however, to go to work and use my AIM account to IM back to my home computer.
My AIM account at work uses a Thawte certificate. No worky. I also tried an aimencrypt certificate. Also no worky. Is there a way to encrypt an AIM account and have encrypted IM sessions with encrypted .mac accounts?
If the answer is no, .mac encryption is mostly worthless. Not a great user experience to get excited about it and switch it on unknowingly. In fact, it's a poor one.
    Thoughts?
    Scott

    Thanks, Ralph.
The problem with limiting encrypted communication to only paid .mac subscribers is that it signifigantly devalues the application. As encryption become more prevelant, fewer users will use iChat. In my opionion, that's not a good thing.
Similarly, the Groups section of .mac suffers virtually the same requirement. Unless the .mac subscriber base were to increase signifigantly from where it is now, both applications are not useful.
    Cheers!

  • How to share internet by wifi using wpa encryption or mac adress filtering ?

Hello, (and sorry for my English)
How can I share internet (from ethernet) to wifi, with a minimum of security : wpa encryption, mac adress filtering or hidden ssid ?
    Thanks,

If I understand your question, Internet Sharing doesn't support WPA, only WEP, which is essentially worthless.

  • Encrypted blank disk image, actually encrypted or just password protected ?

I created 200 GB blank disk image on external drive using disk utility with options 128 bit encrytion. I have thought that the data copied to the disk is just password protected not encrypted as such.
I came to conclusion as when you encrypt Mac internal HDD, you can see encryption/decryption progress in Time Machine(system preferences) where as I do not see any encryption/decryption progress for encrypted disk image while copying huge data.
    Anyone knows about it ?

As of OS X 10.7.4, Disk Utility had a bug that prevented it from creating an encrypted disk image with a password of more than 10 characters. I haven't checked recently to see whether that bug has been fixed, but from your report it seems not to have been. There is a workaround, but it's complicated.

  • OS X Encrypted Disk Image Tool Buggy?

    Hi,
I'm trying to create an encrypted file directory on an external HDD (My Book). I decided to try the OS X software to create one. I have tried both the following options, each of which has been buggy when transferring files into the created images:
    * 50GB Encrypted "Sparse Disk Image"
    * 50GB Encrypted "Read/Write Disk Image"
CASE 1 - "Sparse Disk Image" - errors occur when loading data/files into these images. When I check them via Verify the Disk Utility says there is a "Invalid B-tree node size" and the repair does not work.
    Questions:
[1] Is this a known Apple OSX bug?
[2] Is there a way to lodge a bug request with apple?
[3] Is there a well known/popular folder/file encryption Mac software package that works that someone could recommend?

Is the external drive a USB drive formatted as FAT32? If it's USB and you're using it "out of the box" without having reformatted it, then it's probably FAT32.
FAT32 filesystems can't properly hold a file larger than 2GB. I ran into this with a pocket size 12GB USB drive. Once the sparseimage file gets close to 2GB, things go haywire.
If you don't need to share the drive with Windows machines, reformat the drive as Journaled HFS+, and the problem should go away. Otherwise, keep the sparseimage files well under 2GB.

  • Problem with Mac Office Password Protection

I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 with MS Word for Mac 12.3.5 and MS Excel for Mac 12.3.5.
I created a Word (.docx) and an Excel (.xlsx) document on my Mac at home, both with password protection.  I uploaded the documents onto Google Drive.  I was able to open the documents a few times with the password on my Mac at home, and on my PC at work.  However, now upon opening the docs, Word and Excel say the password is incorrect (both home MAC and work PC).
I know I'm entering the correct password. I'm 100% positive. I was able to open the docs a few times previously just a day before.  Now they're completely inaccessible. My questions are:
    (1) Is this a common problem with Mac for Word/Excel docs?
    (2) Are there ways to recover the password (a dictionary based brute force solution is unlikely to work, as I use non-word passwords with numbers)?
    (3) If this is a common problem, are there other alternatives to password protecting or encrypting Mac for Word and Excel docs that don't cause problems?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Could just be thats the way it runs on Rosetta. I called in apple to ask if I could return office '04 because I didn't want to take the chance, they were more than eager to return it for me because of the fact it would be slow/maybe have problems running in Rosetta.
I just got iWorks instead till the universal version of office comes out (which if you buy office '04 you'll have to buy the new universal version as well, or so the rep told me).

  • General Question on Firevault Encryption

    Hi all,
    1. With an encrypted home folder, does that mean any files saved from my computer to say a USB stick to be transfered to another computer are all encrypted too (hence cannot be opened)? (If so an encrypted Mac is like a non-workable hermit Mac...)
    2. Does FireVault block or fail the UPloading of a torrent? Or does it slow down torrenting?
    3. If I had not back up the filed Before encrypting, and only save a back up of my files After encryption, am i saving an encrypted version of them which cannot be opened anywhere else?
(Hence to have the original files, it is imperative to do back up before encryption?)
    4. Can the encryption be easily reversed? I know we can just turn it off again but will it leave any damage/residue etc anything to the original files?
    5. I read from the warning pane that we cannot even do printer sharing??? Meaning we cannot print even with our private printers?
    6. Can an encrypted Mac do file sharing or screen sharing with another Mac both of which I have the master password? But both of them have a different version of OS X.
    Thank you "-)

    1. No.
    2. FV only affects files within your Home folder.
    3. A backup of a Home folder while in use is not encrypted or secure. You must be logged out before making such a backup so the backup will be of the encrypted disc image.
    4. Yes, just turn off FV. An unencrypted version of your Home folder will be written to the hard drive, then the encrypted disc image is removed. This requires sufficient space on the hard drive to save two copies of the Home folder - the unencrypted and the encrypted - until the decryption has finished.
    5. Not familiar with any effect on printer sharing or printing.
That was five questions, not one.

  • Wireless connection is not working on my Satellite U400/03S

    Hi Guys,
I have Toshiba Satellite U400/03S laptop and I have a very strange problem that I can't seem to get around.
I signed up new ADSL2+ connection and yesterday when was I trying to setup it up I found the I can connect to internet through wired but not wireless.
The laptop shows the network in the list with full signal strength. I have configured the connection properties identical to my laptops including the WEP key and such. When I go to connect to the network, it just sits and says "Waiting for network" for approximately 5 mins, then that dialog dissapears and never connects to the network, just goes back to the network selection screen.
Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you go about fixing it? This is very frustrating and have been playing with router options and computer options for hours now trying to get it to work properly with no luck.
Just to let you know guys that I am using Billion BiPAC 5200G RC wireless router and windows XP pro on my laptop.
Help please! Thanks in advance to all that reply.

    Hi buddy,
I agree with Macius. You should contact your internet provider because I think its a problem with your Internet connection or router that you get from them. So you can check with the guys step by step if everything is configured properly.
For creating a WLAN connection you have to configure the settings in router like encryption, MAC address filter, etc.
For testing I would disable all these security features.
Last but not least you should check the TCP/IP configuration of your WLAN card. Maybe you need a static IP address or DHCP Depending on your router ;)

  • Full Backup of PC Running Virtual Windows XP Under 64-bit Windows 7 Pro on a T410

I have a QuadCore (Intel i7) T410 with a 320GB HDD running 64-bit W7Pro.  Under that environment I am running a separate Virtual Windows XP system.  The T410 hardware and Virtual PC system allows me to see the primary C: drive of the T410 from either the W7 or XP environment, and the Virtual PC implementation is essentially based on the existence of 3 very large disk files on the primary drive which contain the entire Virtual PC image.
I want to back up my HDD in such a way that I can use the restore function to re-install both the W7 system image and all of its programs and files, and the Virtual PC system image as well.  What is the best way to do this.??

  • Recovery Disk Assistant created USB not a valid start-up disk

Booting from Recovery Disk Assistant created USB drive gives me a slashed circle with an eternally spinning grey wheel. Googling forums for the meaning of that symbol (and the fact that the machine never boots) leads me to believe that my recovery USB is somehow corrupted. This is repeatable -- erasing the USB key, repartitioning, re-downloading and re-installing using the Recovery Disk Assistant leads to the same error. I've verified that the USB drive is fully functional. I'm curious if there's anything obvious that I'm doing wrong here? Has anyone else experienced this?
    The particulars are as follows.
    - I followed the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848
    - I have a 16 GB Corsair flash key, on which I have two GUID partitions: one 2 GB and one 14 GB
         * intially, the 2 GB partition (the to-be recovery partition, even though the recovery files are ~650 MB) is formatted as a non-encrypted, Mac OS Extended (journaled) format
         * the 14 GB partition is ExFat
    - the Recovery Assistant finishes normally
    - as expected, the recovery partition is not visible in Disk Utility, but exists:
    $ diskutil list
    ...{snip}...
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *16.0 GB    disk2
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk2s2
3:       Microsoft Basic Data Feigenbaum              13.7 GB    disk2s3
    - to test the recovery disk, I reboot, holding `option' and choose to boot from the recovery partion on my USB drive
         * I'm using a non-retina, 2012 MBP with OS 10.8.5, if that matters
    - normal start-up splash: apple icon
    - boom: spinning wheel & slashed circle

Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't give this a go with a single partition, but I have resolved the problem.
Before finding the solution, I tried making a bootable clone of the MBP's recovery partition:
    - enable Disk Utility's debug option from the terminal: defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
    - mounted the recovery partition in Disk Utility
    - restored from the recovery partition to the desired partition on my USB drive
    - made the partition bootable from the terminal: sudo bless --folder /Volume/{path}/System/Library//CoreServices
    - rebooted from the new partition
I got the same result: slashed circle and a spinning wheel
Creating the USB recovery partition on my Mac Pro worked. I verified that it works on both machines before I saw R C-R's suggestion. What's really weird is that the MBP *will* start from its own recovery partition. Maybe the MBP's recovery partition is corrupted in a way that allows it to boot but not be copied? Maybe I've made an error elsewhere? Who knows. In any case, my problem is solved now and hopefully, this thread helps some other poor soul.
Thanks again for the suggestions! Much appreciated.

  • How to format a hard drive for Linux?

I have a hdd (500gb) that used to be my internal drive for my MBP 2012. It currently has Mac OS 10.10 and Ubuntu 14.04. I want to erase the drive though so I can make it strictly for Linux. The question is which format do I choose in disk utility. These are my options:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled, Encrypted)
    MS-DOS (FAT)
    ExFAT
    Thanks in advance

Format it from the Linux installer. You cannot format it using Disk Utility because you cannot format a startup volume.

I purchased the Fusion drive specifically to have that processing power to run Windows and Mac.
I'd stick to only Mac, but work software requires Windows

    Hi All,
I Have succumbed to this problem today in OSX Yosemite, I found it was FileVault being turned on was my problem, you can check this as follows:
    - Disk Utility
    - Click on Macintosh HD (The indented one)
    - In the Properties you will find Format : Encrypted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  .
To repair is a simple case of switching off FileVault in System Preferences/Security and Privacy/FileVault(Tab). You will need to click the padlock to make changes, then you will be able to turn off File Vault.
I found this was paused and had no way to resume it so a fresh install of OSX was my friend and this time round I made sure FileVault wasn't turned on.

  • POOR wireless range

I have a white 13" macbook which i bought about 6 months ago. We have the new BT home hub wireless router (the black V.2 model). I can get the network no problem in the adjacent rooms but as soon as i go upstairs i get nothing. Can anyone explain why my range is so poor??

    Hi sutton185,
    Welcome to the forum.
There are a lot of variables that can affect the "performance" of the range of your wireless router. Location of the router, interference from other electronic equipment (telephone, TV, radio etc) and walls are just some that immediately spring to mind.
In these situations, one of the first things I would do is change the wireless channel and/or the location of the router. If the symptoms still remain, you may need an additional wireless router (like Apple's Airport Express) which will be configured in WDS mode and act in extending the wireless range.
To change the wireless channel you'll need to log in to your router. With the BTHomehub simply fire up a web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL field. Click on Advanced... in the left list and Advanced... again. The default username is admin and the password is admin again. Then select Wireless from the Advanced submenu on the left and on the right, at the top, you'll see the following menu items: Settings, Encryption, MAC Address Control, Repeater. Ensure that Setting is selected and from the drop down menu in the Channel field select a different channel and click Apply. You may have to experiment with different channels; try Channel 11 first and work from there.
