Encrypted Time Machine Drive not visible

Hi,
I have a Mac Mini (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram) running OS 10.8.4 and all other OS/application updates have been run.  I have a Drobo (2nd Generation, the one with four drive bays & Firewire) with 3.69TB used and 1.72TB free.  The Drobo has the most up-to-date firmware 1.4.2 as well as the latest Drobo Dashboard software (2.5.2).
I was using a different NAS to backup my data from the Mini but the housing failed and I'm waiting for Other World Computing to send a new one.  In the mean time, I decided to backup the Mini to the Drobo and Encrypt it.  I believe it went through one complete backup of the Mini (440GBs) overnight.  I also use the Drobo as my main drive for my photos and iTunes library.  I have about 2TBs of music/movies and about 1TBs of photos already stored on the Drobo.  During the day yesterday, during a regularly scheduled Time Machine backup (I believe it backs up every hour), I was in the process of deleting photos off the Drobo and got the dreaded spinning beach ball.  I waited for 1/2 hour but still after no changes, I turned off the Mini and after rebooting the Time Machine drive will not show on the desktop.
The Drobo is visable in the Drobo Dashboard app and of course it says there are no issues.
The Drobo shows up in Disk Utility as a Virtual Whole Disk (in red type) and when running Verify or Repair Disk, it states that "Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."  I can do this till the cows come home but nothing changes.  The only other info that shows up in red is "Invalid Disk Label @ 17591825289216: invalid field value.  It repeats it four times, I'm assuming once for each drive. The last piece of info is "disk3s2 is not a CoreStorage volume.
I saw on another thread to run a Terminal command "diskutil cs list" and it came up with the below listed info.

Any help to get my nearly 4TBs of music, movies, photos back would be awesome!
Thanks,
Jeff

Are there any utilities that can help "uncorrupt" the volume so I can rescue my data?
The only thing you can do is destroy the Core Storage logical volume, which will remove all data. If there is anything other than backup data on it, you're in a recovery situation, which is a job for professionals.
You should immediately start a new backup on another storage device. Don't do anything else with the computer until that's done.

  • Ejecting an encrypted Time Machine drive always prompts "Eject All"

Whenever I eject my encrypted Time Machine drive, Finder reports that the drive has more than one partition and asks if I want to eject just the Time Machine partition or all. So I have to hit "Eject All" in this dialog every time I want to disconnect my MacBook from my Time Machine drive.
Thing is, there is only one partition. I've even gone so far as reformatting the drive to one partition and restarting my Time Machine backups fresh twice, but I still get the Eject All prompt every time.
Anybody else have this issue and/or know of a solution?

I wouldn't use RAID for TM, but...

  • Time Machine backups not visible

I've got a problem where Time Machine does backups like it should, but when I enter into Time Machine to view my backups, none of them are visible. Its a bit odd... in Time Machine I see bars on the right (indicating the backups) but there are no dates listed next to the bars (apart from the one at the bottom that says "Now"). If I move my mouse over the bars, they expand to indicate that I'm selecting them, but clicking has no effect.
I have seen this notice from Apple regarding the problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760?viewlocale=en_US
When I first set things up, I had spaces in my computer's name... but Time Machine worked back then. At some point I changed the computer name to a name that did not have spaces and contained only characters that were with Apple's designated list. I've never gone into Time Machine to view backups since I've done that until yesterday, so I don't know when my problem started happening.
I've tried renaming my computer name back to the original name (with the spaces) just to see if the backups would show up again. No luck. I've now renamed my computer back to a name with no spaces to fall under Apple's guidelines. Still no luck.
One thing that is interesting is that I can manually mount the sparsebundle image and see all of the backups and the files that are in there. It does indeed look like the backup part is working.
I've run Disk Utility's repair on both the external drive and the disk image and they seem to be in good shape.
I'm considering just reformatting my drive and starting the backups all over from scratch, but this seems to be a drastic approach. Further, it lowers my confidence in relying on Time Machine. Any suggestions on how I might fix this?

I have a similar problem, my computer name has non ASCII characters, the backups are there but don't show up when I time travel. I need to get some files from one of the backups, so I can't just reformat and begin again, but your message makes it seem that changing my computer name to a valid name won't allow me to access the backups that were made with the invalid name.
It would be nice if the Apple document you reference would give some help to solve the problem rather than just tell us what we did wrong.
Surely there is a way to access the backups that are on the drive.

  • Time Machine Browser not visible

I am able to do backup using the time machine application. I can see the backup when I click on the drive icons and move through the file flows. The problem is when I select the time machine icon from the dock, It does not display the images that you can scan through the time line on the right side of the screen is not visible. I am very new to Apple and the Mac, this app was working properly when I first installed a usb drive. It worked for a week and then the system failed during a backup. I was able to reset the drive and remove the failed backup. I was able to then do additional backup using this drive and the time machine but the time machine browser does not work. Is there a way to reset the browser, I can not find anything in my searching various forums.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

    Yay! and you're entirely welcome.
I have been an OS2 user for many years and of coarse did windows, apple is somewhat different in the way this are done but is very stable machine. I have my MAC now for about three weeks and It just works, no crashes, the mail program never misbehaves, can not say the same for windows and outlook.
Yes, Macs are pretty good, but they're not perfect (these forums are not empty).
Do you think I should get an antivirus program, from what I read you really do not need one. My concern is the overhead those type of programs have on system performance.
No. There are no known OSX viruses, and the few trojans and other malware require your participation in one way or another to load and/or run. (I especially like the ones that are hidden in pirated copies of iWork and other apps -- how appropriate!)
Some folks, however, worry about passing Windoze viruses amongst their PC friends. In that case, the free clamXav is recommended most here, as being as good as any, and not obtrusive.

  • Time machine backups not visible-changed computer name

I found that I could not access any of the Time Machine back ups. I checked and the computer name had an apostrophe in it, also spaces. I changed the computer name to remove those and used ASCII characters only. The was yesterday evening. I still can't see any of the backups, although I've heard the hard drive I use for TM running a couple of times since then.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?

I do not see the backups thru Finder or thru the TM browser. I can get into the Time Machine browser, but the only time period displayed is today. The arrows to move backward and forward don't do anything and the bars along the right side are not labeled with dates or time as they should be. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • 10.5 Time Machine backup not visible in 10.6 Migration Assistant

    Hello everyone,
Helping my not-so-tech savvy auntie move over from her old 5,1 iMac to a newer 8,1 MacBook. Her old iMac has a Time Machine backup on OS 10.5.8. I plugged in the Time Machine to the new MacBook (which is on a clean install of OS 10.6.8) and for some reason the Migration Assistant is not picking up the Time Machine in the "Select Your Disk" section. All I can see is the MacBook's internal HD. The Time Machine backup is showing up in Finder, however the disk's icon is yellow, not Time Machine green.
I'm a bit stumped - can someone please advise? By all indications, a 10.5 Time Machine backup should be able to restore to a 10.6 system. We are visiting for the weekend and I really would like to get her up and running before we leave tomorrow.
    Thanks!
    VIkki

Yes, that's option B as she still has the IMac but I'm curious as to why the TM backup isn't working - just in case I need to do this on another machine down the road, it would be nice to know what's going wrong with the more convenient TM restore option.... Thanks!

  • Emails in restored mailbox from Time Machine are not visible

I have an IMAC 5.1 with OSX 10.6.8. When I restored a mailbox using Time Machine, the mailbox appears in Apple Mail however no emails are visible even though they are present in the folder in library/mail/mailboxes in Finder. Any suggestions on how I can make the emails visible?
    Thanks

I managed to find the solution.  In Mail under Mailbox in the header there is a Rebuild button.  I pressed it and my emails are now visible.

    Hi,
I want to recover from a Time Machine backup but the external HD where it was stored now shows empty (1TB available) and the name 'backup' has been replaced by 'untitled'.  It was fine yesterday.  How do I get my backup back?  Is there external software I can use, something throught Terminal?
    Thank you,

  • Transfer Information to This Mac from Encrypted Time Machine?

I just got a new Macbook Pro (factory fresh) and wanted to move my data from my Encrypted Time Machine (on a USB drive).  The older Mac that I'm moving of off is running the 10.7.2 and I have been back it up daily to my Time Machine disk.
I attach the USB drive but it doesn't show up or prompt me for my passphase. So I can not Transfer Information to This Mac from an encrypted time machine drive. That has to be a bug.
Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?

I backed up with a encrypted timemachine and needed to do a reinstall of my macbook pro OSX lion.
When I reinstalled everything I lost a lot of files on the encrypted timemachine but it is still decrypting so I hope I get those missing files back or am kinda a dead man..
    Not sure if this helps.

  • Is it possible to have two encrypted time machines on one partitioned hard drive?

I am trying to use encrypted time machines for two macbooks (15" and 11") with only one USB hard drive. The problem is that after creating one encrypted time machine for my 15" in a separate partition, the hard drive does not work when plugging it into my 11".
What happens is that I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11". I enter in the correct password but it does not work (i.e., password fail). The interesting part is that when I plug the hard drive into my 15", I am asked the same thing, but the password entry works.
This is my current setup for my 1tb usb hard drive:
    1) 400gb for data
    2) 400gb newly encrypted time machine for my 15"
    3) 200gb unencrypted time machine (with old 11" time machine backups) for my 11"
The hard drive is formated/partitioned in RAID format.
All I want is to be able to have two encrypted time machines for each macbook on one single hard drive. Previously I was able to maintain two separate time machines (unencrypted) on this hard drive. I decided to try and encrypt both but seems like I am getting something wrong.

I am prompted to enter in my encryption password for the 15" time machine on my 11".
If I understand correctly, you want to mount the other partition. Are you prompted to do that? Does the password include any characters other than plain letters and digits? Are you using the same keyboard layout on both machines?

  • Creating Encrypted Time Machine Back Ups to a Network Hard Drive

Hello all, I can't seem to create an encrypted Time Machine back up on a network hard drive.  Can this be done?  And if not, why not?  It seems that Macs have all the necessary functionality already available in Mac OS. Time Machine can create encrypted backups with multiple computers so what's the difference if it is to a network backup drive, honestly?  Any suggestions?
My Set up:  Three Macs, Airport Extreme Base Station, Seagate 3 TB HD (with separate partitions for each computer's backups).  2 of the Macs use ethernet to connect to the network and one uses wireless regularly.  Basically, I'm trying to encrypt my family's backup drive and I don't know how or why I can't.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Appleguy514

First, you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
Second, no, you cannot encrypt a network backup on Lion or earlier.  Only Mountain Lion.

  • Recently installed a 1TB hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook 10.6.8  however Time Machine says not configured hence cannot back anything up

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
    Can anyone help ?

You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over.

    Hi bodegakc,
If you have the serial number then please use the below mentioned link to download the product you are looking for .
    CS5.5
Also before installing Please go to Applications-->Utilities--> Adobe installers and if there is any uninstaller for CS5.5 , you can remove it and do a fresh install.
You can also use creative cloud cleaner tool before installing.
