Encypted imac via the vault - start up problem

encypted imac via the vault and now the system says it has 110mb left from 1tb hard drive. my files are not that much. any solutions?

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
ITo locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • HT3986 Does anyone know how to enable the "Delete" key for logging on the Windows 7 partition on the latest iMac, via the latest Apple wireless keyboard? Many Thanks

    Hi All
Does anyone know how to enable the "Delete" key for logging on the Windows 7 partition on the latest iMac, via the latest Apple wireless keyboard - the standard wired apple keyboard works fine via this key but not the new wireless keyboard?
    Many Thanks

Holy crap, this fixes the issue.  At least temporarily it has.  I should add that my issue was single finger forward/back swipe stopped working on the magic mouse in Firefox since Mavericks came along.  I have been fighting this since I upgraded to Mavericks a few months ago.  Thank you, tbirdvet.  You have no idea how much easier you just made using my iMac again.

    Hi jeris529,
As Niel has suggested, you should not use a non standard disk in your slot loading iMac.
Further information about disk compatibility or usage can be found in the Apple Knowledge Base Article "Using nonstandard discs in optical drives".

  • Start up problems, including from installation disc.

Hello everyone in the Apple ether, I need your help!
I have a powerpc based iMac G5 at home that I set up for my mum to use once I bought my macbook. I finally managed to win her over with talks of how much easier it would be for her to manage her photos in iPhoto, and everything was going really well. I recently came home after my final year at uni and some travelling to find that the computer is taking a long time to start up. This can be in both the grey apple loading screen but also once it logs in it can take a long time to display anything over than the desktop background, and even once it displays other items any attempt to open anything just results in a spinning wheel icon. At the worst case it has taken about 20 minutes to get going.
Once it has fully booted, the machine doesn't appear to be working any slower than normal. I tried using disk utility in mac OSX and verifying permissions etc and that didn't do anything. I then tried googling the problem and came across this article on the apple web site. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Starting in Safe Mode did not resolve the issue so after backing everything up I tried starting from the installation disc. This is not something I have ever done before and as someone that never really delves beneath the surface of her machines I was a bit scared of doing it. But I put the disc in and restarted and held down C just after I heard the chime, and shortly after it all went wrong. The screen went grey and all I could see was the image you get when it crashes (you know, the power sign with text over it saying you need to restart) with lines of code all down the left of the screen. I took a photo of the screen on my camera so can give details of the code if you need them. The last line said
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3: Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj-4/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
After a few minutes on this screen the fan started working overtime and after about 5 minutes of that I just turned it off using the power button on the back. The machine has since started up normally (ie slowly) but is working fine.
So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to fix the slow start up problem without booting from my install disc, or indeed if anyone could suggest why I can't boot from my install disc? Thanks very much for your time and help.

It appears you experienced a kernel panic which is hardware related. A few suggestions for you to try:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from the computer & try the suggestions mentioned in the following:

Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose *"Disk Utility"* from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the *"repair disk"* button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and run *repair permissions* from Disk Utility.
    * If Disk Utility (from the install DVD or HD)is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • How do I get my Pages documents to my iMac via iCloud?

So I successfully updated my iPhone 4, iPad2 and my iMac. My iPad and iPhone sync flawlessly via the cloud. I need to know how to get those same Pages documents to sync with the iMac via the cloud.
    Anyone?
    Thanks

"documents in the cloud" is limited to the iOS versions of iwork in its current form.
Put simply : iwork for OSX has no iCloud support.
You can manually open Safari, go to www.icloud.com , log in with your Apple-ID and download the files from the iwork section to your Mac's download folder.
    Yes it *****, we know.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

My iMac Version 10.6.8 has problems starting up. I often get a white screen without the apple icon. Then I must turn the computer off and restart. Restarting will usually bring up the Apple icon and the start screen. What could be causing this? And how can I resolve this issue. My Mac is still under warranty, I've had it just 7 months.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC.

  • IMac Start up problems, and installation problems

    Apple iMac
I've recently purchased a copy of 10.6.3 as a substitute for my 10.6 disc.
On trying to re-install my internal hard drive, after it wouldn't boot.
All Documents etc are on an external 1TB External Drive, also my documents are on my MBP.
    1) Been trying to install for well over an hour, and still it says 28mins?
    2) Tried to clone my MacBookPro hd over, via Firewire, and waited nearly 12+ hours to no avail. Going down the route with Carbon Copy Cloner, and also Disk Utility, and even tried to install via Firewire cable, on that occasion it got to 45 minutes left, and all went quiet.
    3) Have run disk utility loads of times to check the integrity of the drive, it says Verified,
    4) Have now tried to reinstall with the original disks that came with the mac, after reformatting the hard drive, and selecting my options, the installer starts, and when reboots, take ages, white screen, I don't even get the prompt to insert the the second cd.
    5) On this basis, a) Is my hard drive failing
    b) Is my problem the superdrive.

You cannot install an earlier version of OS X than the machine came with that is why your installation won't work. The problem probably is that your Original Install Disc that came with the machine is a later version than 10.6.3.
If you are trying to determine if your HD is failing there are a couple of things you can check. First in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilties - Disk Utility) check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the HD. If it says anything but VERIFIED yes your HD is in trouble. The next thing you can do is run Apple Hardware Test. Here is an Apple Advice Letter that will provide instructions. Remember you will need the ORIGINAL Install Disc that came with the computer. Run AHD in extended mode to be the most thorough.

I am trying to setup my Time capsule via a ethernet cable as a back up for a new iMac. The on button on the time capsule set up window keeps failing to stay on. Any ideas what to do?

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Start up problems iMac 27"

Would anyone be able to help?
The power in the house has been down, and now my iMac doesn't start. (it is a bit more than a year old). When I push the power button on the back of the screen, the fan starts on quite high rev and go for a minute or so, then it turns itself off. Some times thescreen lights up and the tone signal goes off, but the it does again.
I have ahd this problem onece before, and the it was cured with a Power Conroler Unit something reset. I can find that instructions on the internet unfortunateley.
    Can someone help?
    Many thanks in advance Ove

The first thing you should do after getting the machine up and running is buy yourself a decent UPS, they can be for less than $100. Get one with a USB connection so you can connect it to your iMac and then control it.
I would recomnend doing a SMC and PRAM reset first:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Start UP problems, blue screen, Imac (intel) 1.83  17"

I posted this Saturday in a different area. So forgive me if I did this incorrectly.
Imac DuoCore 1.83 (originall with 10.4 Tiger)
Upgraded to Leopard several months ago without problems.
    Have the lastest updates.
Two days ago the following started:
    1. Starts up-no chime
    2. Apple logo is seen (grey)
    3. light blue screen with progress wheel-not the pinwheel)
    4. screen dims a bit, progress wheel dissappears then comes back and it does
    the same thing.
I ran the Disk First Aide from the CD, performed verify and repair disc.
Came back with repaired completed. Everything seemed ok.
    Restarted...but the problem persisted.
    Next I reset the PRAM...
Chime came back on start up.
Ran the CD a few again. Said it was all ok.
    Restarted....and back to blue
I ran hardware test from the original CD
all came back fine. Two items were repaired.
Restarted and back to the blue screen.
Tried Single user interface and ran /sbin/fsck -fy
Again 2 items were found and repaired.
    Restarted.
Hardware and software seems to be fine acccording to this.
SO it seems it's the PRAM battery. I think. ANy other ideaS???
ALSO...this machine is out of warranty. Not afraid of cracking it open.
But, where is the praam batter located? Like to know what the part number is to have it on hand when I open it.
    Any help appreciated.
    RLM

I opened up my iMac and replaced the PRAM battery. No change.
I then took out the Hard drive and placed it in my G5 destop.
When i restarted it I could see the hardrive and it's contents. Both HD have
10.5.7 installed so I thought I could restart with the Imac HD
and then back it up. But it wouldn't start up and jumped to the
    G5's HD. My question is:
    1. Is the reason it would not recognize the iMac HD as a start up disk because
it's from a duo core intel mac?
2.Is it because the iMacs HD has some problems in booting up?
(as I wrote before I have run every test available with positive results
yet continue getting the blue screen)
And since I can read and see the imac drive in my G5, how can I back it up short of dragging everything to a new drive since I can't log into the individual users. Of primary importance are the pictures in iphoto in different user accounts.
    Thanks for any help
