Entourage and Word 2001

Hi, I am not sure where to find help on this but I going to give it a try here. I have an emac with 9.2 running. I have Office 2001 installed. Whenever I try to open the Entourage or Word application I keep getting a message saying "type 2 error you should have save your work" I can open Excel and Powerpoint with no problems. I stupidly did not back up my emails now I am worried that I may lose them all. Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks in advance.

The first thing to do is to backup all your existing emails. In OS9, they should be in the Documents/Microsoft User Data folder in the top of your boot disk.
Then get to the mactopia website at microsoft to make sure you have all the necessary patches applied to Office 2001. (I'm not a believer in giving people links to exact pages, put mactopia into Google and be amazed how easy it is to find things for yourself).
Do you have virtual memory turned on ? If you have 1G or more of memory in the eMac, VM will be off. This has caused issues for me with Word (but not Entourage) in the past.
This could also be caused by (one or more) corrupt fonts, Word likes to display the Font menu using the actual font, annoying for symbol fonts.
I'm at a bit of a loss to work out what Entourage could be complaining about.
Could be corrupt preferences. Find and trash them from the Preferences folder on your System Folder. They could even be in a Microsoft folder within there.
Finally could be a corrupt application. MS are keen users of self-modifying code since Word 3.0. You could try a reinstall of Word or Entourage (aren't you glad you backed up your mail).
After all this, and you still get the same error, should we consider a corrupt mail file. Even then, Entourage can make an effort to recover the mail.
How big is the mail file ? And how much free space is on the internal hard disk ?
After all the above, I'm hoping that even if it still doesn't work, you're getting a more descriptive error message.

Hyperlinks in Entourage and Word stopped opening a tab in Firefox

I uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player, which fixed my problem with the plugincheck tab always opening. Viewpoint Media Player is responsible for the plugin called "MetaStream 3 Plugin r4", and I believe this plugin is triggering Firefox to open the plugincheck page. It is not enough to disable the plugin, it must be uninstalled.
Since it seems you don't have the "MetaStream 3 Plugin", it may be that some other plugin is causing the plugincheck tab to pop open. Try going to Tools (menu) -> Add-ons -> Plugins. Look through the list of plugins, and see if any of them have a red warning icon next to them. If one of the plugins has a red warning icon, it may be the plugin responsible for triggering the opening of the tab. Try uninstalling that plugin, or updating it to a newer version.

Entourage and Word Doc Attachments

I've recently started using Entourage (Office 2004 version) in place of Mail. Occasionally I get a Word doc attachment that I can't open. I get a message stating it is either in use or is not a properly formatted doc. I can switch over to Mail and open the same doc with no problem at all. Any idea what the issue might be? It's not a show stopper, just a minor annoyance. Somewhat like not getting the free upgrade to Office 2008 because I forgot to send in the original boxtop (the original receipt wasn't good enough for Microsoft). Sorry, my anti-Microsoft bias is showing. Any help is appreciated.

Hyperlinks in e-mails and word documents no longer open a window

My Firefox was recently was upgraded (not my choice - you just did it) and now when I click on hyperlinks in e-mails (I use Entourage) and word documents the screen acts like it's getting ready to take me to a new window in Firefox but then nothing happens. I want this functionality restored, especially since many links do not spell out the web site.

Have original iMac; MS Word 2001 keeps crashing - What to do?

That's unusual, Word should have its own preferences. Is there anything else unusual about your copy of Office? e.g. have you lost any fonts that should be there? Maybe try trashing the Component preferences.
If the worst comes to the worst I take it you have Office on CD? One of the nice things is that it contains an Uninstall program to wipe all trace of Office from your Mac so you can effectively start again with a nice clean installation. I bet you've probably got lots of e-mails and things stored in Entourage that you don't want to lose? Well, all messages are stored in a particular folder which you can drag your messages from (as one single clump, not thousands of individual messages, that would be a nightmare).
I've done this in the past when I had a problem with my installation of Office that I could not solve. It worked fine and really didn't take very long to do.
I wouldn't touch the Diskwarrior CD, not because its bad, but because its the wrong tool for this particular job I feel.
I quite like Office, there are things you can do with it very simply that are a pain in the @ss to do with Appleworks. But I prefer to write in Appleworks, then cut & paste into Word. Maybe I'm weird, but Appleworks has a cleaner design which I can only guess makes writing easier subconsciously.
Also (and I'm really going into overkill if I wasn't before), there is a very nice book on Office 2001 by David Pogue, published by Peach Pit Press. I got my copy a year or two ago on eBay and its quite handy. Did you know for example, that you can squash all your e-mails in Entourage down to a nicely compressed size to save space on your hard drive? It also makes Entourage perkier if you're the kind of person with 10,000 e-mails in your inbox. To do this, simply hold down the space bar when you double click to open Entourage and away it goes. All those e-mails are as accessible as before, but now they'll contain half the calories

Word 2001 for MAC won't save files

Suddenly, for no reason apparently, I cannot save Word 2001 files. It dings, but nothing comes up. I've tried saving and saving as...nothing works. This happened overnight. I've tried it on both Power book G-3 and networked G-s Power Mac. Neither one will save the files.
What do I do?

have you also tried Save As ... I know you will have, but I've got to ask.
and, is it a Word document that you are trying to save, rather than a template or another type of document that word has opened for you ?
Do you open documents "read-only" ?, this is unlikely if it's happened overnight and affected two Macs, but have to ask.
Where do the original documents come from ? Are they on an internal hard disk ? or a disk image (on the internal hard disk), or the internet ? Are the documents "protected" - an option in Word to require a password to make changes to a document.
Can you create and save new documents ?
were there any other changes to the Macs that might have caused this to happen ? anything at all ? any other software installed ? or memory installed ? (I had untold issues with Word v5 menus after upping the RAM to 1.25GB - this automatically turns off VM in OS9, Word 5 didn't like that at all, for some reason it needed VM on).

G4 hangs when opening or saving Word 2001 files in Classic mode.

Hello, everyone. I have a G4 400 MHz AGP Graphics ("Sawtooth") model with Microsoft Word 2001 that runs in Classic mode. Recently, when I have tried to open files, the symbol that looks like a tiny clock face with a spinning hand appears, but nothing else happens. This occurs before a dialog window appears prompting for the selection of a file from a particular folder. I can create a new file and type text, but when I try to save the file, the tiny clock face also appears, but nothing else. This also occurs before a dialog window appears prompting for the name of a file and for the selection of a folder in which to save. I can successfully open files in Microsoft Excel 2001 in Classic mode. I did not test PowerPoint 2001.
I'm wondering if the default folder where Word 2001 is trying to open and save files has so many files in it that this G4 isn't able to handle the resultant load. Has anyone encountered something similar?
Also, I'm wondering if I should try to reinstall Word 2001. Does anyone have any ideas in that regard?

I think they both have older 10.4 versions that can handle Word & Excel docs.

Problem with embedded links in Word 2001

Hi,
I have searched many forums but can't find any answers to this. I hope you can help me.
I work with image files and text, and have made links from within Word files to the .jpg files I need. This was very easy to do in my old PowerMac G4 running OS 9.2.
Although I now work normaly in OS X, I still need to work in those Word 2001 files in Classic because I use a special font and some of the characters don't display correctly in OS X.
When I moved the files from the old computer to the new Powerbook, I assumed all links would be broken and would have to be edited but, to my surprise, all the links worked just fine when I run Word 2001 in Classic (the links' paths are still the old ones, from the old computer, but they work nevertheless) - I wonder how...
They don't work in Word 2004 but I never expected them to.
The problem is trying to edit or create hyperlinks now, in Word 2001.
If I change or create a link, it works just fine just as long as I don't quit Word.
When I relaunch Word 2001 and reopen the file, as soon as I point the cursor to the link, Word quits. I've done it enough times in a row for Classic to quit as well.
Is there a way to make links work in Word 2001?

I know that all fullscreen videos are flexible to both orientation. What´s happens here is before show your vertical layout the viewer shows the vertical video. You need to try in custom app...Produce an IPA file and test it.
Maybe be a bug...

RH7/Word 2001

We recently installed RH7 as an upgrade to our previous
version (X5). We are running an older version of Word (2001) and
Office XP. When I try to compile it, it is taking forever, if it
compiles at all. It is happening with all the projects I have tried
and has been this way since the upgrade. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix this?

The symbol for a file can be changed by a clean instal of software. An upgrade will even change the icon for files created by older versions of the software, creating confusion. You see a new icon on a ten year-old file and think it is new. A blank or generic icon is created when files are recovered after a crash.
Installing fewer features will let you load faster. Word 2001 is much better behaved than Office 2004 which is guaranteed to crash OS X when you copy and paste muti formatted items from the web and paste them into Appleworks. All these decades and they still have not created a reliable cut and paste routine.
Microsoft is good at creating planned obsolescence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence) so be prepared for buying an upgrade to make the original work.

Freeze; Word 2001 & AOL

All of a sudden, starting two days ago, Word 2001 and AOL v.5.0 are messing up. With one exception, the AOL application quits as soon as I try to log on. It reports a type-two error. Word 2001 lasts a longer, but after I write several pages, it locks up or freezes (whichever is the one when the cursor stops moving.) The only exception occurred this morning when I re-installed the AOL application. It worked just fine when I logged on and read my backlog of e-mail, but, when I tried to run a Flashsession, the application went back to quitting on me.
I've run Disk First Aid and Disk Warrior on the drive. They've had no effect.
Any guesses? TIA

Can I mix Pages page layout and word processing together in one document?

Hello there ! I am quite new to Pages and I am desperate to learn as i want to get rid of everything being Microsoft
As you all know when you open Pages you can choose between page layout and word processing !
the thing is i thought that after using a page layout you could just go with word processing easily... well no, you can't, but i'm sure i'm missing something...
For exemple i really like the catalogue brochure and it would be perfect for me to start a project... but after a few pages, i can just add blank pages and if i want to type text, i have to add text boxes... i don't want that, I want word processing... and another thing in this brochure i can't add table of content because it is not by default in the template...
So my question is quite basic here, can we link Page layout and word processing without having to use text boxes and everything ?

Welcome to Apple discussions.
The simple answer is no. What differentiates page layout from word processing mode is that the PL mode has no text layer. So everything that goes on the page must be an object of some kind. And any pages you add to a PL document must also be PL. You can't mix the two modes. One way around it is to start with a blank page, insert a text box, then stretch the box so that it covers the entire page. You can the type in it as if it were a text layer in a WP file. You can even capture that page so that you can add it automatically when you need it, or save it as a template.
As for building a Table of Contents, it appears that Pages only sees text styles that are on the text layer, which means it won't see styles that are in objects -- which means it won't work with a PL document. From being a long-time reader of this discussion group, I've noticed it's rare that someone wants to add a ToC to a PL document.
If you find that you're going to be mixing text and graphics, start with a word processing template. If you really like the Catalog Brochure, you could always copy some or all of its elements over to a blank WP template.

Can I search for pdf and word documents at the same time in finder?

I often want to search for more than one file type at a time - for instance pdfs and word docs in a directory, or Jpgs, GIFs, PNGs etc.
Can I do this in the finder in one go (so I can save it as a folder I can then select when I want to)?
I tried typing OR between the 'tokens' it creates, but then it just searches for OR - so not as intelligent as one would think?!
Surely there must be a way to do something as simple as this?

Forget the whole "tokens" business (I think that is a pretty useless "improvement" to constructing Spotlight searches). Hit command-F to bring up the search window, and set your first criteria, in the example I changed it from the default Kind to Created Date, to keep the number of results manageable. Now hold down the Option key and click on the "+" at the end of the criteria line, it will change to "..." and you get a new criteria line. From the dropdown menu choose "Any" if necessary (this will give you the Boolean OR), then enter what you want in the first sub-head. To get a second sub-head OR criteria click the "+" at the end of the Any line.
I don't generate many MS Word docs, so I just stopped in the example above after typing Microsoft, since that brought up all the MS anything I have from this year (a couple of Power Point thingies sent to me by friends).

You cannot download or install Word or Excel for the iPad. MS has not released an iOS version.
There are MS Office compatible apps available in the app store like Quick Office Pro and Documents to Go. Take a look at those and see what you think. Apple also has their iWorks suite of apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote that are compatible with the MS Office apps.
