Environment layers?

in the getting started with logic book it keeps refering to the 'layer' menu to the left of the environment window. but in my environment theres no layers menu, when i select 'environment' from the 'windows' menu it opens a mixer and the only menu's available are: New, edit, View and Options. where's this 'layers' menu?

The Logic reference manual, Chapter 5: The Environment page 202 talks about environment layers, which screenshots showing you what you are looking at - a quick glance at that will show you what you are missing.
The "Menu" is a flipmenu in the parameters section of the environment window, not the Apple-like local menus.
When you open the environment window, you are seeing one layer of the environment, that happens to contain some object that work like a mixer. There are other combinations of objects on other layers, and you can add and delete layers at will.

  • Tips on making environment layers for use in AE?

I've watched a few tutorials on this, but still don't know e.g. what size still image is best for an HD project (I imagine much larger than 1920 x 1080?)
I'm fairly clear on vanishing point in PS to use a single still image, but does anyone know a good tutorial on stitching together several images in PS or whatever?

Depends on what kind of environment... Reflection maps can be fairly low res since usually one would want some blur in them anyway to avoid small details popping out too much or causing aliasing... Backgrounds for matte paintings might be different, but dollying into a landscape would still require only relatively small layers whereas panning around will require more room to work with....

  • Managing Environment Layers

I got my electronic drums set up pretty nice in the Logic environment. I put everything in its own layer called "MIDI Drums". I would like to make similar for a guitar rig and a master keyboard. Each will have its separate layer and i plan to use a cable switch object on each layer to turn the routing off when i do not have the equipment hooked up.
But i have come across a problem. The environment only allows one instance of the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input. They do not seem to be shareable. How do i set things up so that i can have multiple layers connected to these inputs and have the flexibility that i am talking about? I do not want to be forced to put all this routing on the same layer as it would become a maintenance nightmare.

you can move objects from layer to layer by selecting the object and holding down option while switch layers. the object will follow you into the new layer but retain all its previous cabling.

  • Can't import or Copy Environment Layers

    Hi
Wondered if I could beg some help.
I'm trying to copy a layer from the Environment in one song into a new song so I can use it as a template.   I've tried importing the layer from within the Environment of the new song (using Otions->Import Environment->Layer) and also copying all the objects in the environment layer I want, and pasting them into a new song.
In both cases the objects are kind of copied, but none of the audio objects, instruments etc. are replicated correctly in the new song.  For example - my environment layer has a bunch of Software instrument tracks, plugins etc.  When I paste them into the new song, instead of them being replicated in the same form, all my software instrument tracks have been changed into output channels!
Can anybody explain why Logic does not correctly recreate the environment objects when they are copied or imported?  This whole area of functionality seems to be broken, because I have used this in years gone by when songs have become corrupt and UI've had to rebuild them from scratch, and when creating templates from a particular song.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

I can import all my MIDI, Aux, Audio and I/O tracks/objects but there's no point doing that if the MIDI tracks are not connected to the right instruments and the Aux channels are not being fed by the right instrument outputs.
    Yep :-(

What I don't quite get is why I can't copy or import the environment layer.   That's the bit which is literally days and days of work to build, and which Logic should be able to import.  Do you know how I would have to prepare the new project in order for this to work?
Unfortunately, it can be a massive amount of work. The Env import function has not worked properly for me for some time (can't remember the last time I tried it). The 'accepted wisdom' is that working with an old template (which started life in Logic 8, 7, 6???) can end up carrying forward a whole bunch of problems. It is often better, or safer (?), to start afresh.

You mentioned not needing midi multis anymore - can you explain what's replaced this?  I use multis because I can assign an instrument name, icon and colour to each channel of the multi, which then appears in the Arrange Window.  IS there a more elegant way of doing this that I'm missing out on?
It all depends why you were using them in the first place.
Back in Logic 7, for example, there were issues with Track-Based automation with some plugins and 'Host Automation' along with Multi-Outputs (for example Stylus RMX), taking into account how clunky Logic was, and is, with multi-timbral instruments. One solution for that was to setup a complicated Enviroment setup whereby you could 'automate' MIDI tracks that were connected to the SI channel.
With more recent versions of Logic, and plugins, particularly with the Host-Automation features, I am not so sure that all this is necessary anymore.
If all you need is a TrackName, an Icon and a colour, you can do this directly. The attached pic shows one multi-timbral instance of RMX:

  • Environment can't do everything!

    Hi folks!
Has anyone else ever tried to build an environment that incorporates the items in the pedalboard? None of them respond to environment objects despite the fact that the monitors CLEARLY show successful passage of midi information through the channel strip FROM the environment system. Is there a good reason why the Pedalboard is the only plug-in that doesn't respond to the environment? I find that hard to believe since it is easily automated in the arrange window. Of course, sometimes building a useful environment system makes it MUCH easier than automating 3-4 parameters for a specific sound. (I say this to avoid responses that say, "Why don't you just automate it?")
    Jamie

I am wondering how you actually "output" the HH velocities to the bus is the first place.
Remember, all a "track" is is an arrange track, coupled with an environment object. You can send data in MIDI regions on a track to any environment object, by assigning that environment object to that track.
Simple example - open an arrange window and an environment window. On a spare environment layer, create a new "Instrument" object, call it "Test" or something. Make sure it's 'Icon" is ticked.
In the arrange, select a track (or create a new one). Control-click on the track header, select "Reassign" and up will come a popup menu of all environment layers, and all visible objects in each of those layers. Select your "Test" instrument, and it gets assigned to your track.
Now, all MIDI data is being sent to that instrument object.
Look at the parameters of that object. Of course, you can cable this object to other objects, transformers etc, but instruments have a MIDI channel and MIDI port setting. In the "Test" instrument, set it's output port to "IAC Bus". Now, all MIDI data arriving at that instrument will be sent on that channel to the IAC bus.
So, anytime you need to send MIDI out of Logic, whether it's on a MIDI interface to physical MIDI hardware, or to the IAC Bus, just make sure your desired MIDI stream ends up at an instrument object set to the desired output port.
If I had a "DX7" keyboard on MIDI Port 3, channel 4, I'd do exactly the same thing - create an Instrument object, called "DX7", with the MIDI port set to Port 3, and the MIDI channel set to 4. Now, when I want to sequence my DX7, I simply create a track and assign the "DX7" instrument to it, and that data goes to the DX7 - and I no longer have to remember or care what port and channel it's on.
This is a fundamental design in Logic.

  • Cutting a max layered rug

['it would also be best if you made up environment layers for each section of the orchestra as this type of setup can look confusing if you have too much all on the one layer.'
this a quote from our dear fellow genius Rohan.]
My setup is like this with Environ: Instrument>Cable switcher>Transformers
So now I've reached that age, with 10 parts on one instrument and it's getting weighted on the Mac [space desinger hall reverb running to balance out the staccato on my Steinway Hall giving it that concertina feel].
Now what would be nice is to start a new layer and that's done as Rohan suggested. But here's my question how many parts are going to weigh the composition down in one layer, or how many channels is ideal to run on 1 instrument without stress.
To keep my MIDI cha. as the switching source I want to have the layers both as multiple and as playable as possible [in example if all 16 parts were in use in the MIDI inst. layer it would be too heavy since my processor speed is only 2g's].

So looking ahead for practice and stage how much performance can one expect per instrument track? How many voices switched on that instrument via MIDI?
hi muzak. not sure about the genius thing....very kind and all that. BTW love your stuff italics - classic muzak.
number of voices on a track is dependant on your horses (cpu and drive in the case of streaming samples) and memory. in real terms anyway. there is probably a theoretical limit.
you can have unlimited tracks of any nature (i think the limit is 256? audio tracks) more than enough. midi info is very efficient and uses very little system recources by todays computing standards. but it is down to where the bottleneck will be. if it is a soft synth, it will be cpu in driving software, more critically in soft samplers it will be the hard drive streaming audio. and then everything is dependant on memory, but again these days of multi Gb memory your limits are theoretical rather than practical.
the environment concept in logic makes it both more complex and easier to manage complex setups. it can grow with your needs or not be used at all. iS has the concept right.

  • MIDI Instrument Management

We have a lot of MIDI instruments in our environment that correspond to channels on our 8 PCs running Gigastudio, V-Stack, Kontakt, etc.
Right now, we have one environment layer for Strings, one for Brass, etc.
First Question: When selecting an instrument from the Arrange window for a particular track, one is presented with submenus representing the environment layers, and then a list of instruments within that layer.
Is there a way to create submenus within a layer? For instance: there would be two submenus representing Legato and Pizz. instruments within the Strings environment layer submenu.
Second Question: Is there any way to sort MIDI instruments in and environment window? This is kinda driving me nuts.
    Thank you!!!

I see what you mean. That's a good tip, but unless
I'm misunderstanding you, you're talking about the
automatic alphabetical sorting in the menus in the
    Arrange window.
My reply was in response to your question, "i just want to sort alphabetically (or by MIDI port/channel). "
So I thought you wanted to have port 1 be first in the list, port 2 second in the list, and so on.
What I wish was someway to arrange or sort
instruments in the Environment window, but it seems
that they are forced to sort by creation order.
This issue came up because my boss is inclined to
look for an instrument in the environment according
to where it is in the Arrange menus, i.e.,
    alphabetically.
I'm going to play with this and get back to you. I think there's a way to do this. Maybe, possibly, I think...  :-)
But I'm thinking now maybe the solution is to do that
trick where you double click on an arrange track
while an environment window is open, and it
    automatically selects the envrionment object.
Although, this functionality doesn't seem to always
    work properly.
That's right, it's a little inconsistent. Might be a bug. The trick to overcoming it is to click on an instrument (in the arrange window) that you know lives in an unrelated layer, and then click on the instrument you want to see.

  • How to create a new independent audio track?

okay, probably a stupid question, but how can i create a new audio track that is not a "slave" to an already existing audio track. for example, all of my 8 audio tracks are in use, so when i try to open a new one, it is affected by the highlighted tracks specifications, making it very frustrating. please help and thanks.

Some things are just backward in Logic...we just have to get use too it.....
jord, I agree.. it's not that hard to understand the difference between an arrange track and an audio object. the fact that you can have many tracks in the arrangement that all use the same audio object or midi object is a great thing.
I think if people get their head around the fact that the arrange page _is not_ simply a representation of what is physically available in terms of tracks, then it all becomes clear.
I would recommend all new users to do the following:
click on your arrange window, and select the top track. start hitting delete until you have deleted every single track in the arrangement. you now have a blank page. but, importantly, the environment of available audio tracks/audio instruments/midi channels/whatever has not changed one single bit. you can now assign anything to your arrange page. 55 arrange tracks that are all using audio instrument 1 if you so desire. or, sequentially create new tracks that are all using subsequent channels/instruments by controlshiftreturn (by default).
people often get confused by doing the following: they create a new track in the arrangement - say they had audio instrument 1 and then created another _arrange track_ of audio instrument 1. then, they look in the parameter box for that second arrange track, and change it to audio instrument 2. then they get annoyed that for some reason, both tracks now change to audio instrument 2.. but this is totally normal, because you have changed the assigment of the same audio object, that just happened to be present in the arrangement in the form of 2 arrange tracks. the way to change what object is assigned to an arrange track is to click-hold on the track name (right there where the track is in the arrange list) and then you will see a pop up of all of the available objects, hierarchically presented to represent the environment layers in your song. or, instead of doing this, you can just create an arrange track that uses the next available audio track/instrument by using the key command described above (controlshiftreturn).
it's not at all illogical or backwards! when I am writing a midi part using an audio instrument, I (very) often want multiple arrange tracks of the same instrument so I can test out different ideas or variations.. muting all except the one I currently want to hear. and importantly, they aren't "copies" or "clones" of the same track, nor are they "linked" tracks that change assignment together, as many people seem to think. they are independant arrange tracks that just happen to have the same track or instrument assigned to them. once you get this, you start getting logic.
the way to build new audio objects or midi objects (which is what people mean when they say "new track") is and has always been in the environment. although, now there are shortcuts to do it by using the function 'create multiple tracks' which will produce the objects for you in the arrangement and add them to your arrangement in one operation. you also need to be aware of the setting in your audio prefs (or in hardware and drivers, can't remember which) where you define the maximum number of tracks that the audio engine will allow, this being another stalling point for many new users.
like I said, once you 'get' this architecture in your head, you start realising how powerful and flexible working on arrangements in logic will be. for me, it's a way better implementation than playlists in protools, for example.

Yes, possibly from a certain template or previous environment, there are a lot of specialized environments available for download.

  • Stacking layers top-to-tail to create a long banner print of software code in Photoshop

I have lots of software code (in tSQL, html, JavaScript, XAML, and C#) that I need to print in a long scroll. The scroll will be no more than 440mm wide and as long as it needs to be (though the roll of paper is 45 m long so I’ll need to make sure it is shorter than that). The resulting code listing is to from part of an exhibit contrasting the ‘sketching’ phase in a multidisciplinary project between design, social science, and software engineering. The exhibit will form part of the Research Through Design conference http://www.praxisandpoetics.org/researchthroughdesign/ next week
At first I thought I’d print straight from the development environment (Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Server Management Studio) but I realise now that is not possible because
    1) Both tools assume standard page sizes, and
    2) I need to rotate the software code listing 180 degrees so that the end of the listing is at the tail of the paper roll.
For these reasons I’m doing it in Adobe Photoshop (CS5, 64 bit, on Windows 8).
My workflow for this is verging on the ridiculous.
    1) If I cut-and-paste the code listings file by file from Visual Studio 2012 and SQL Server Management Studio into Photoshop (or Illustrator) I lose the formatting, for example the coloring of comments differently form variable declarations. (See http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/how_could_i_paste_a_rtf_pdf_word_tex t_keeping_the_formatting_into_photoshop .) Thus Step 1 is to cut-and-paste each file into a Microsoft Word document.
    2) If I cut-and-paste from the Microsoft Word document into Photoshop I still loose the formatting, and Microsoft Word does not seem to be able to cope with the paper roll nor rotating the print. So I save the Microsoft Word document as a PDF and open that into Photoshop.
    3) I now have 51 Photoshop files each with one layer containing the text for that ‘page’, though I think it’s an image as it is not editable as text. I then save each of these files.
    4) Using Adobe Bridge I open all 51 Photoshop files created in Stage 3 and “Load Files into Photoshop Layers” so that I have a new single Photoshop file with all 51 text image layers in.
    5) The layers sit on top of each other. What I need is for them to sit head-to-toe. I don’t know how to do this without spending a million years selecting layers and moving them by hand.
    6) If I ever get Stage 5 done I will then group the 51 layers and rotate the result through 180 degrees.
    7) I will then resize the result to have a width of 400mm and print the resulting file on our banner printer, having first calculated the resulting paper ‘height’ and turned off the automatic paper cutting.
    So my questions are:
    1) Is there a better way of doing this?
    2) I can see the Photoshop actions that will align layers by their tops, their bottoms, or their centers but how do I automatically align them so that the bottom of layer 1 touches the top of layer 2, the bottom of layer 2 touches the top of layer 3, etc.?

If you can make an image file for each page you may want to look at my paste image roll Photoshop script.

    Hi Rob
Any chance you have a Windows computer/folder mounted on your computer. There's an odd behavior that happens with a couple scripts; Export to layers, Image Processor and Dr Browns 1-2-3 scripts, when a particular Windows environment is logged into your computer. Also, Bridge AOM is effected.
see below if you do have a Windows computer mounted:

no workaround but to unmount the Windows computer when running the script. ( you will also need to restart PS)

that is correct. If you search the forum by "mask button" you
    will find posts
going back many years saying that flash does not support
    masking within button.
To work around that limitation, you can place your mask in
