Managing Environment Layers
I got my electronic drums set up pretty nice in the Logic environment. I put everything in its own layer called "MIDI Drums". I would like to make similar for a guitar rig and a master keyboard. Each will have its separate layer and i plan to use a cable switch object on each layer to turn the routing off when i do not have the equipment hooked up.
But i have come across a problem. The environment only allows one instance of the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input. They do not seem to be shareable. How do i set things up so that i can have multiple layers connected to these inputs and have the flexibility that i am talking about? I do not want to be forced to put all this routing on the same layer as it would become a maintenance nightmare.
you can move objects from layer to layer by selecting the object and holding down option while switch layers. the object will follow you into the new layer but retain all its previous cabling.

Managed environment with Acrobat reader 9
Hello all,
I'm making a new image for my organisation and want too use Reader 9 as the default PDF reader.
Only thing is when I log in the first time as a managed user Reader wants too install additional stuff
that need Admin rights? (not something you want in a managed environment)
Second, when I proceed by filling in the admin and Adobe installs it's things the application crashes after finishing.
The following errorlog pops up:

Client (image) OS 10.5.4. iMac 2GHz C 2 Duo
Server OS 10.5.4. Xserve 2.8Ghz Dual Quadcore Xeon
Any help ore pointer are verry welcome.I am suffering the same scenario except the server is not 10.5.4, instead 10.4.11. The client is nearly identical. I can resolve the issue if I am a local admin, but a local account requires an admin password. If the local non-admin clicks cancel. The application attempts to load but really doesn't properly - ne menu etc. and that must be force quit.

How to mimic non colour managed environment in CS6
Can anyone tell me please if it is possible to see in Photoshop what an image will look like when it is out in the un-colour managed world?.I can see how you can do it if you are saving for web because you can preview it in a browser, but is it possible to do this with TIFs and PSDss please?
I have a wide colour gamut display and even with it set to sRGB colour mode emulation, sRGB tagged images that look correctly saturated in Photoshop look oversaturated once out of it and in an uncolour managed environment - particularly the reds. If I can replicate this environment in PS I can edit the colours to make them more neutral looking.
Thanks.I think you are very wise t have x2 sRGB displays. If a large sRGB display had been available I would have bought it.
Could you bear to help me with another - display issue,please?
As part of the work I do I have to make screen recordings of images being produced for the magazine. I use Camtasia for this and they insist on a 1024x768 resolution. This has been no problem in the past with my standard sRGB display (NEC 2490/2) because the aspect ratio was right for it.
The aspect ratio was not right for the Spectraview display (2560x1440) so I used the original 2490 also attached to my graphics card to make the recordings at 1024x768.
Now, something has changed in the arrangements and when I set the 1920x1200 display to 1024x768 the image stretches as if it were in the wide display. I am defeated as to why the standard display can no longer show 1024x768 at the correct aspect ratio.
I am not aware of having changed any W7 settings - both displays are recognised. Though I do notice that under the "advanced settings for the W7 resolution window, and under the "Monitor" tab, the 2490 is not available - only the wider display (271) - here is an image that shows this:
When you open the "Colour Management" tab all the resolutions are available for the 2490/2 but as I said, when you select the 1024x768, it appears as it would (and does) on the wider display.
Can you suggest what I've done wrong and how I might fix this, please.
Thanks. -

What is Matrix Management Environment?
hello
Can somebody tell me what is Matrix Management Environment in reference to BI project?
ThanksA Matrix Management Organisation can be any organisation which has both vertical & Horizontal responsibilites which are classified on the basis of Ownership, Department...etc.,
A Typical MMO in IT can be,
Say different Departements under CIO for a business which has two business areas chemical & pharmacy
IT security IT BI IT strategy
Chemical Developer1
Pharmacy Developer1
The developer 1 can belong to chemical departments but should also report to IT BI - Pharmacy for a project. This sort of sharing the resource across many departments is typically the use of matrix organisation.
It helps in accoutability, when one business is spun out then it will be easier when we have a MMO.
There are tons of materials on the net, just google
Hope it helps

How to deal with JDOException in managed environment?
In the managed environment, one can use bean-managed transaction
(javax.transaction.UserTransaction) to demarcate the tran, but when the
tran commit, JDO may generate some exception to indicate something make
the commit impossible(Primary key conflict(JDOFataDataStoreException, Data
be changed before commit(JDOUserException) etc.), but the UserTransaction
only generate the RollbackException or other, not the JDO exception, and
there is no way to get the real exception from the RollbackException, but
sometime, I must do something according to the exception, how can I do?
One way is use javax.jdo.Transaction, but I don't know is it apropriate to
use this, and is there any side effect to use this?But can I use javax.jdo.Transaction instead of javax.jdo.UserTransaction?

The fact that you can't perform application-specific handling of
commit-time exceptions is a bit of an annoyance that the EJB CMT spec
presents.
Kodo provides an API to allow incremental flushing of data to the
database, which you can use to help catch some exceptions before commit
time. However, note that this is not foolproof -- depending on how your
database deals with various exceptions and integrity checking, you may
still see some exceptions at commit time instead of at flush time.
For details, see the JavaDoc for the
com.solarmetric.kodo.runtime.PersistenceManagerImpl.flush() method.

in the getting started with logic book it keeps refering to the 'layer' menu to the left of the environment window. but in my environment theres no layers menu, when i select 'environment' from the 'windows' menu it opens a mixer and the only menu's available are: New, edit, View and Options. where's this 'layers' menu?
The Logic reference manual, Chapter 5: The Environment page 202 talks about environment layers, which screenshots showing you what you are looking at - a quick glance at that will show you what you are missing.
The "Menu" is a flipmenu in the parameters section of the environment window, not the Apple-like local menus.
When you open the environment window, you are seeing one layer of the environment, that happens to contain some object that work like a mixer. There are other combinations of objects on other layers, and you can add and delete layers at will. -
Kodo class/resource loading approach will be a problem in managed environment.
Hello,
Kodo does not work with Apache Tomcat 3 and 4 unless Kodo jars and my
persistent classes loaded by the same class loader. Kodo uses
Class.forName() and class.getResources() on class loader which loaded Kodo
classes thus it is not able to find system.prefs or package.jdo (and even if
it was able to find system.prefs how would it handle multiple system.prefs
from multiple contexts each managed by its own class loader?)
The problem as I see it is that web containers usually have container
classloader(s) and a class loader per web context. Desired configuration
would be to share Kodo classes among all contexts and implement jndi factory
to provide PersistentManagerFactory lookup in each web container
environment. According to Tomcat specs I placed Kodo jars in
$tomcat_home/lib (class loader shared among all contexts) and deployed my
persistent classes along with system.prefs and *.jdo files to my context
WEB-INF/lib directory. As a result Kodo would not find system.prefs resource
and eventually fail with error - required resource db/url could not be
loaded. I tried to place Kodo jars into together with my persistent classes
in WEB-INF/lib it did not help (this was really strange since all classes
should have been loaded by the same context class loader) The only
configuration that works is when I put Kodo and my persistent classes in
tomcat's common directory or on system class path. Which is of course not a
right way to go as context specific classes such as my persistent classes
should be shared
Without source code it is hard to figure out what is going on and how
resources get loaded, so could somebody look into it. It is quite important
for us to resolve this issue as we are planning to use Kodo with tomcat.
Also I am not sure that system.prefs is a good idea. As I mentioned when
integrated with appserver/web container environment jndi it is up to jndi
factory to create and configure PersistentManagerFactories. Different
PersistentManagerFactories will be bound to different jndi names often in
different contexts under common or separate class loaders and they should
not be in my opinion dependent on common system.prefs
I would greatly appreciate your suggestion on proper use of Kodo in web
container environment
Thank you very much in advance
Alex RoytmanI want to add that even if we put both Kodo jars and persistent classes jar
in WEB-INF/lib to be loaded by context class loader it does not work due to
following piece of code in Prefs.java:
private static synchronized void loadSystem() {
try {
Enumeration enumeration =
(com.techtrader.util.app.Prefs.class).getClassLoader().getResources("system.
prefs");
Object obj = null;
Object obj1 = null;
InputStream inputstream;
for (; enumeration.hasMoreElements(); inputstream.close()) {
URL url = (URL)enumeration.nextElement();
inputstream = url.openStream();
_cache.parse(inputstream, url.toString(), "");
catch (Exception exception) {
throw new ParseException(exception);
however if we replace it with following it will work:
private static synchronized void loadSystem() {
try {
Object obj = null;
Object obj1 = null;
URL url =
(com.techtrader.util.app.Prefs.class).getClassLoader().getResource("system.p
refs");
InputStream inputstream = url.openStream();
_cache.parse(inputstream, url.toString(), "");
inputstream.close();
catch (Exception exception) {
throw new ParseException(exception);

classes thus it is not able to find system.prefs or package.jdo (and evenif
it was able to find system.prefs how would it handle multiple system.prefs
from multiple contexts each managed by its own class loader?)
The problem as I see it is that web containers usually have container
classloader(s) and a class loader per web context. Desired configuration
would be to share Kodo classes among all contexts and implement jndifactory
to provide PersistentManagerFactory lookup in each web container
environment. According to Tomcat specs I placed Kodo jars in
$tomcat_home/lib (class loader shared among all contexts) and deployed my
persistent classes along with system.prefs and *.jdo files to my context
WEB-INF/lib directory. As a result Kodo would not find system.prefsresource
and eventually fail with error - required resource db/url could not be
loaded. I tried to place Kodo jars into together with my persistentclasses
in WEB-INF/lib it did not help (this was really strange since all classes
should have been loaded by the same context class loader) The only
configuration that works is when I put Kodo and my persistent classes in
tomcat's common directory or on system class path. Which is of course nota
right way to go as context specific classes such as my persistent classes
should be shared
Without source code it is hard to figure out what is going on and how
resources get loaded, so could somebody look into it. It is quiteimportant
for us to resolve this issue as we are planning to use Kodo with tomcat.

Deploying TCS v2 in a Managed Environment
I wondered if anyone had successfully deployed TCS in a Managed Enterprise Environment using an
Enterprise Management Tool such as SCCM or Radia?
In our environment all Applications should be packaged for deployment so that they can be fully managed i.e. Conflict Managed; Deployed with Full Logging; Repaird and Regressed.
I have spent a considerable amount of time working on TCS to try to understand how it installs. I saw no less than 45 MSIs being installed as part of the suite, to the majority of these the Setup.exe passes a Parameter File (XML format) as well as the Calling Process ID meaning I am unable to deploy these MSI's in Sequence standalone and therefore I was forced to use Setup.exe.
The Problem with Setup.exe. is that it spawns a second process so there is no way of knowing if the installation has completed. Hence why I have a previous post enquiring about the setup.exe switches.
To further complicate matters I have a number of patches to apply. The usual method would be to create an Admin Installation Point and PAtch this before deployment, but this functionality is not available with the media I have.
Do adobe provide different media for distribution in a Managed Enterprise Environment as looking at the media I have I can see no accurate way of achieving our goals?

Tips on making environment layers for use in AE?
I've watched a few tutorials on this, but still don't know e.g. what size still image is best for an HD project (I imagine much larger than 1920 x 1080?)
I'm fairly clear on vanishing point in PS to use a single still image, but does anyone know a good tutorial on stitching together several images in PS or whatever?Depends on what kind of environment... Reflection maps can be fairly low res since usually one would want some blur in them anyway to avoid small details popping out too much or causing aliasing... Backgrounds for matte paintings might be different, but dollying into a landscape would still require only relatively small layers whereas panning around will require more room to work with....

Where's that "Auto-Manage' Environment view setting?
I can't find it in the manual or the program, but I know it's there somewhere...
Where the heck's that little checkbox to make the Arrange page automatically manage new strips in the environment?
You'd think it'd be trackmixer/options... Nope. Trackmixer/view - nope. Environment window/view Nope. Environment window/options - nope. Preferences/display - nope.
Ya ever notice how many redundant menus this behemoth has? Hadn't bugged me much, till now.Fab - thanks. Musta looked right past it in my hurry -- never expected it to be under 'audio' settings. But I guess it kinda sorta makes sense. Maybe.
You'd really think this would be in at least one of the mixer or environment "view" or "options" menus. Since it mostly deals with viewing options in the mixer. But hey - that's too Logical, innit!
thanks again. -
Transaction in container managed environment
I am mulitiple DAO methods to insert/update into the different tables of the same database.Every time,in each DAO method ,I am taking a connection from wsad connection pool(no XAdatasource) and returning it back to the pool at end of the method.Now,I want to enforce a transaction (CMP) made up of all these dao database update methods.So,container will automatically take care of the commit or rollback operation.Will using a single connection object across all the methods solve the purpose?Is their any other way to do it?
Call all the DAO methods from a single session bean method, this will run all the update methods under a transaction. but here forget about the number of times u may have look up for the connections. but ur transaction is managed by the container.

Can't import or Copy Environment Layers
Hi
Wondered if I could beg some help.
I'm trying to copy a layer from the Environment in one song into a new song so I can use it as a template. I've tried importing the layer from within the Environment of the new song (using Otions->Import Environment->Layer) and also copying all the objects in the environment layer I want, and pasting them into a new song.
In both cases the objects are kind of copied, but none of the audio objects, instruments etc. are replicated correctly in the new song. For example - my environment layer has a bunch of Software instrument tracks, plugins etc. When I paste them into the new song, instead of them being replicated in the same form, all my software instrument tracks have been changed into output channels!
Can anybody explain why Logic does not correctly recreate the environment objects when they are copied or imported? This whole area of functionality seems to be broken, because I have used this in years gone by when songs have become corrupt and UI've had to rebuild them from scratch, and when creating templates from a particular song.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

I just looked at track import and all my multitimbral instrument objects with linked Multi Instrument midi objects are not shown at all, which means I'm unable to import them. I guess this makes sense because they don't appear in the Arrange Window.
I can import all my MIDI, Aux, Audio and I/O tracks/objects but there's no point doing that if the MIDI tracks are not connected to the right instruments and the Aux channels are not being fed by the right instrument outputs.
Yep :-(

What I don't quite get is why I can't copy or import the environment layer. That's the bit which is literally days and days of work to build, and which Logic should be able to import. Do you know how I would have to prepare the new project in order for this to work?
Unfortunately, it can be a massive amount of work. The Env import function has not worked properly for me for some time (can't remember the last time I tried it). The 'accepted wisdom' is that working with an old template (which started life in Logic 8, 7, 6???) can end up carrying forward a whole bunch of problems. It is often better, or safer (?), to start afresh.

You mentioned not needing midi multis anymore - can you explain what's replaced this? I use multis because I can assign an instrument name, icon and colour to each channel of the multi, which then appears in the Arrange Window. IS there a more elegant way of doing this that I'm missing out on?
It all depends why you were using them in the first place.
Back in Logic 7, for example, there were issues with Track-Based automation with some plugins and 'Host Automation' along with Multi-Outputs (for example Stylus RMX), taking into account how clunky Logic was, and is, with multi-timbral instruments. One solution for that was to setup a complicated Enviroment setup whereby you could 'automate' MIDI tracks that were connected to the SI channel.
With more recent versions of Logic, and plugins, particularly with the Host-Automation features, I am not so sure that all this is necessary anymore.
If all you need is a TrackName, an Icon and a colour, you can do this directly. The attached pic shows one multi-timbral instance of RMX:
(All this depends on me understanding your requirements correctly???)

Migrating from antique 10.3 server to 10.6 managed environment. tips?
Hi, I'm migrating an old 10.3 Server to 10.6 (new hardware) and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or warnings before we start this process.
10.3 server only has following services active: AFP, Mail, OD, Web. It's important to note that users simply mount AFP directories. There is no single-signon at play or Networked/Mobile Home folders.
on 10.6 we'd like to get these basic services up and running as quickly as possible then switch users to Network/Mobile Home folders.
I'm not expecting (nor do even think it's possible) to "migrate" anything from 10.3 to 10.6. Because of this I plan to archive all email that is stored on server (cyrus 10.3) to each user's local Mail.app (10.6).
The new server will be set-up from scratch and all active current users will be recreated as well as the file system which is not too complex. Share Points will be copied to the new server and permissions adjusted recursively.
My biggest areas of concern are *1) how best to handle migration of mail on server?* Which I think will be simplest if each user archives locally and then we switch services to the new 10.6 host and, basically, abandon the 10.3 cyrus mail stores. BUT, that gives rise to my next, larger, concern: *2) how then to migrate current 10.6 clients to managed Networked/Mobile clients?* Especially when considering the 10.6 clients have *local users* logging into *local accounts* that were previously accessing the 10.3 server for mail & AFP.
Any/all tips or experiences with this would be helpful!
Thanks!You may want to take a look here http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Cyrus and see if any of the scripts will suit your needs. Dovecot mail boxes match the "Generated UID" that is viewable in the Inspector portion of the Workgroup Manager app for each user account.
When we moved from 10.3.9 to 10.6 it was determined that to avoid future complications new user and group accounts with the same UID would be created on the new server.
Then it was just a matter of transferring data to the appropriate directories and making sure that the data had the correct permissions. If you are moving from local homes to network homes, you can copy any required items from the local machine to the newly created network home. Users downloaded their mail to their local mail database via POP prior to the move. Since SquirrelMail is still used as webmail it may be possible to migrate from the previous version but you will want to know where the data lives on both the new and old server prior to the move. Check the SquirrelMail website for further information on migration between versions. -
['it would also be best if you made up environment layers for each section of the orchestra as this type of setup can look confusing if you have too much all on the one layer.'
this a quote from our dear fellow genius Rohan.]
My setup is like this with Environ: Instrument>Cable switcher>Transformers
So now I've reached that age, with 10 parts on one instrument and it's getting weighted on the Mac [space desinger hall reverb running to balance out the staccato on my Steinway Hall giving it that concertina feel].
Now what would be nice is to start a new layer and that's done as Rohan suggested. But here's my question how many parts are going to weigh the composition down in one layer, or how many channels is ideal to run on 1 instrument without stress.
To keep my MIDI cha. as the switching source I want to have the layers both as multiple and as playable as possible [in example if all 16 parts were in use in the MIDI inst. layer it would be too heavy since my processor speed is only 2g's].
PPMacG5 2.Ghz iBookg4 1.42 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2.5mem Singin'ShureLynx16x M-AOzonicProKeys88 Motu896 ARTubes, Mogamiwired-FCS Customized Profile add Lp 7.2.1 for iSchwartz☮So looking ahead for practice and stage how much performance can one expect per instrument track? How many voices switched on that instrument via MIDI?
hi muzak. not sure about the genius thing....very kind and all that. BTW love your stuff italics - classic muzak.
number of voices on a track is dependant on your horses (cpu and drive in the case of streaming samples) and memory. in real terms anyway. there is probably a theoretical limit.
you can have unlimited tracks of any nature (i think the limit is 256? audio tracks) more than enough. midi info is very efficient and uses very little system recources by todays computing standards. but it is down to where the bottleneck will be. if it is a soft synth, it will be cpu in driving software, more critically in soft samplers it will be the hard drive streaming audio. and then everything is dependant on memory, but again these days of multi Gb memory your limits are theoretical rather than practical.
the environment concept in logic makes it both more complex and easier to manage complex setups. it can grow with your needs or not be used at all. iS has the concept right.
