Error copying some files to a FAT32 HDD

Hello. I've started backing up all my movies to an external drive in FAT32 format, and have run into a problem. Some movies just don't copy. It comes up and says Error -36 and something about "some data cannot be copied or transferred." It seems completely random. All of the movies I'm copying MPEG-4. I can't find any differences between the ones that do copy and the ones that don't, but it seems to be consistent that if a file has a problem copying once, it'll have the same problem every single time. The files that don't copy, play perfectly fine on my computer and they copy to my Mac formatted HDD with no problems. Any ideas?

This is a common issue caused by a bug in snow leopard finder. there are lots of posts about it on the forum. do a search please.

briefly, it happens because of split resource forks for hidden .DS_Store files you get when you copy folders FROM a a FAT formatted drive to a HFS+ formatted one and then later try to copy them back. it doesn't happen if you try to copy just files. you can reformat your drives mac os extended and this won't happen.
as a temp workaround run this in terminal
dot_clean -m ~
if the folder that's giving you problems is located in your home directory. if it's somewhere else run
dot_clean -m /path/to/folder
this will get rid of the split resource forks for .DS_Store files and allow copying via finder.

    No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

    I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
    The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
    I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
    I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
    Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.

    Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
    you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
    another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
    to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
    ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
    here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.
    It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.

  • Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

    Hi,
    I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.
    I have followed the setup instructions at http://www.7tutorials.com/how-change-workgroup-mac-os-x-easy-networking to access my Macbook from Windows, and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24950/how-to-share-a-folder-in-os-x-with-windows/ to share some folders from my Macbook to Windows.
    I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
    I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
    I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
    I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
    So:
    Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
    What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?
    Thanks for any help you can offer.

    I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
    I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
         attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
    in a command window. Running attrib /?  tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
    After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
    I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.

  • Revel Error Message: "Some files could not be uploaded."

    Error Message: "Some files could not be uploaded. 1 file was unable to be uploaded and was skipped." I am a Revel user from its inception. I have never had upload errors before in Adobe Revel. I am trying to upload jpeg files in the same way I have done for months, which is by dragging and dropping files directly into an album I have created. Starting yesterday, only some files upload properly. Others receive the above error message. When I have tried to re-upload the jpegs which have not gone, I receive either the same error message or a slightly different error which indicates the files are not uploading because they are duplicates. They're not duplicates and appear nowhere else in my Revel albums. I have rebooted my Window 7 PC, I have repeatedly logged out and back into Revel. I have tried both Firefox and IE. I have tried creating new albums and uploading the failed files to a new album. I have cleared my Firefox cache. I have tried both the "drag and drop" feature and the "Add Photos or Videos" button in Revel. I have tried using the "Export to Revel" feature in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. I have tried uploading never-before-attempted files, and - on average - only 25% of those brand-new files are uploading. I am a subscriber and pay for the Revel service, so I am not bumping into any upload quotas. I have read through these forums and have found problems similar to mine as far back as May 2013, but none of the problems ever seem to have been resolved other than the users simply giving up. Can you help? I am becoming increasingly confused with respect to which files have succeeded and which files have failed. Thank you. -Dori

    Yvonne-
    You can have many libraries with many albums and files within them. Each library is independent, so if you upload a file to two libraries then you two copies. If you put a photo from a library in albums that live within that library, then there is only one copy in the library that each album has access to so it will show up when you view the album. This might help : http://forums.adobe.com/message/5197228#5197228.
    I found a few incomplete files in your account also. We will take care of this for you and contact you when it is complete.

    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
    It seems there is something wrong with your code, from your code the account and key are the same, because their appsetting name are the same.
    string account = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["StorageAccountName"];
    //string account = CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting("StorageAccountName");
    //string key = CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting("StorageAccountAccessKey");
    string key = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["StorageAccountName"];
    string connectionString = String.Format("DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName={0};AccountKey={1}", account, key);
    return CloudStorageAccount.Parse(connectionString);
    If you use CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting, please consider set azure project as the startup project, if not, this value will be null, this resulted in solution being started as a web project that didn't run inside the Azure emulator. Since CloudConfigurationManager.GetSetting
    tries to get setting by contacting Azure (or Azure emulator in this case), and it is not running, it returns null.

  • Problem copying some files.  Error messages -36 and -50

    I'm trying to backup my user folder onto an external LA Cie drive, and some of the files refuse to copy. The files, it seems, are mostly image or mov. files, and there appear to be dozens of "bad" ones, maybe hundreds. Several tens of thousand have no problem copying, but the bad files foul up the entire process.
    The error messages I tend to get are as follows:
    --"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [file name] could not be read or written (error code -36)"
    --"The operation cannot be completed because the item [file name] is locked."
    --I also get error code -50 sometimes.
    Can anyone diagnose this problem and tell me how to fix it?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Todd--
    First thing I think I'd try would be to see if a different cable helps. Sometimes a bad cable can cause problems with an external disk. Also, make sure nothing but the drive is connected to the PowerBook.
    Second, look at the LaCie web site and see if there's a firmware update for your drive. I found a post on another board where the person had the -50 problem with a LaCie DVD drive that was cured by a firmware update.
    The -36 error means there's a disk I/O error:
    <pre class="command">ioErr = -36, /*I/O error (bummers)*/</pre>Look in your console log at the time you try to copy one of these files. It might have a line something like this:
    <pre class="command">Apr 07 09:00:00 username kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.</pre>The username and disk0s3 parts will change a bit. You can figure out which disk is which using the Terminal application. Just copy and run this command:
    <pre class="command">diskutil list</pre>That'll give you the names and BSD identifiers (which is the diskNsN name) for your drive's partition. That should tell you where the actual error is occuring.
    As for the -50 error, that's an error in the parameter list. That can be caused by copying Mac files to FAT32 formatted partitions. If your LaCie drive is not formatted as Mac OS Extended, you might come up against this problem, too.

  • Please Help! I Need To Copy Some Files.

    Hi, everyone.
    I had a couple corrupt files on a TM backup so I copied the folders System, Library, and Applications from the most recent backup to another drive. I replace the corrupted files.
    Now, I just need to copy the folders from the external disk to the internal (boot) drive.
    I can't do this with Finder because OS X uses the folders and won't let me touch them.
    So, the solution I've come up with is to boot from the OS X install DVD and use Terminal to copy the files.
    (Let me know if there's a better way.)
    I tried the following code, which I got off Wikipedia:
    cp -R /volumes/drive/folder /
    The result was a source disk that needed some cleaning up in Disk Utility and a destination Applications folder containing only the Apple applications.
    During the operation, Terminal very rapidly cycled through error messages for apparently every non-Apple program. It said things like 'no such directory' and 'unable to copy extended attributes'.
    So, I ask of you, smart people, a better command.
    Where did I go wrong with this?
    What should I do differently?
    Is this even possible?
    Thanks in advance!
    I'm just trying to get my files back.

    Thanks!
    I thought that as well, until I saw the size of the folders I was copying.
    But if that's how it works, I guess I'll work on fixing the corrupt backups.
    The Finder seemed to do OK with copying the folders, but I guess they probably don't have everything.
    Thanks again, you just saved me a lot of time!

  • Cannot copy (some) files to NAS

    Hi,
    I'm trying to copy some .potx-files (PowerPoint templates) to a NAS-server and get an error message (in danish) that says:
    +"Handlingen kan ikke udføres, fordi du ikke har tilladelse til at få adgang til nogle af emnerne."+
    Translated it sounds something like:
    +"The action can not be completed because you do not have permission to access some of the files."+
    - I can copy a .jpg-file to the same NAS-share without any problems.
    - This error occurs once in a while for some files...
    - I have read/write permission to the files and can copy/move them to any other location on the Mac.
    - I have tried different shares on the NAS and the same error occurs ... but only for these files. Not the jpg, or any other file.

    I have read other threads that indicate there is a Finder bug relating to NAS drives in 10.6.x
    Have you tried using a third party utility like Chronosync?
    Or,
    If you are comfortable using Terminal, try the cp command:

  • GL2DW-Error copying .lbi file

    I've followed all the tips to copy Components from GL9, and while it apparently is successful with one of my components, I get an Error copying <new website>/<filename>.lbi  and the GL2DW quits, without finishing what it's supposed to do (i.e. create the .ste file to import into DW). So I'm stuck right now and wonder what to do? <br /><br />Is anyone at DW watching these threads? If so, I'm really amazed at the poor execution of what seems to be a vital process of conversion from one of your products to a newer one. I don't have any other choice of how to bring a site into DW, as I don't know how to create the .ste file to use in Manage Sites... PLEASE HELP ASAP!

    Hi Ben,
    I've got past this point at last - it's very odd but the GL2DW found every component that I'd created and deleted from years ago. I think thats why it keeps stalling for so long. Every time it came up with an error I clicked Ok and it went on to the next. This was over a couple of hours and eventually it finished with an error on the last of the components.
    On checking the folder to which all these were to be written I found the working components were indeed all there - even those of old (although they were not functional).
    I found no STE file so Imported the site folder via DWs Site manager and I now have a working site.
    Very long winded I know but thats what worked for me.
    I hope this is of help, but if someone has a quicker remedy I look forward to reading it as this is the first of several v large sites I have to convert..

    I am trying to copy a some large files (several GB) from a USB HDD to mycloud drive using the WD My cloud software as described in this post:http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud/Transferring-Large-Amounts-of-Data-to-the-My-Cloud-and-a-Coupl-e/td-p/620219but the copy grinds for some time and then fails. No, I'm using copy and paste within WD My Cloud for desktop app to avoid having to pull the files across the network. I have also checked the USB disk with chkdsk while plugged into Windows. The files seem to copy if I do it over the network, but its very slow.Ah that was one small detail left out of your initial post that changes things. It is generally NOT recommended to connect a USB drive directly to the My Cloud if copying a large amount of files (or files in excess of 30 or more GB's). Slow transfer speed over the USB port on the back of the WD My Cloud units are a known issue. Search this site and you'll find lots of threads on it. The previous posts indicate better ways to copy the data from a external USB drive to the WD My Cloud.
