Error in getElementById for checkbox with STATIC:prompt;Y

Question

I need the ElementId of a checkbox for some java script processing. The build in function getElementById works fine for "regular" checkboxes, but aborts when I use a prompt in the LOV definition.
I have a checkbox "P15_CHECKBOX". As a test, I use the following code in the "HTML Form Element Attributes":
onClick="javascript:{onClick:alert(document.getElementById('P15_CHECKBOX').checked)}"
This works if I put
STATIC:;Y
in the "List of values definition". If I change that to
STATIC:Select;Y
(as suggested in the HTML DB How-to document on checkboxes) I get an java script error "Object Required" at runtime.
This looks like a bug. Is there a work around (other than removing the suffix)?

if you view the html source of your page when you use...
STATIC:;Y
...versus...
STATIC:Select;Y
...you'll see that your item ids change. that's because we have to keep those values unique (for some sort of standards/compliance something or other). so that's why your reference works with the simple case but not the more complicated ones. you'll find, for instance, that and LOV defined like...
STATIC:;Y,;N
...will give you the same behavior as you're seeing with...
STATIC:Select;Y
...anyhow, it'd probably be easiest to just use a generic DOM reference in your code to avoid having to know the different ids. so hopefully using ID like so...
onClick="javascript:{onClick:alert(document.getElementById(id).checked)}"
...would work pretty well for you.
