• New libpurple causes an error in ICQ proto with Finch, maybe Pidgin

I've updated system yesterday.
Got this error: Invalid DevId while connecting to login.icq.com
Error ocurs in finch and pidgin.
I've downgraded libpurple and issue turned to be fixed.

ICQ did update something, and some developer keys became invalid (the ones used by Adium, Finch and Minbif but not the one used by Pidgin).  See http://trac.adium.im/ticket/15244 for more info.  I patched libpurple so it would always use the official client's DevID, which fixes the issue: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49803

• Pidgin farsight2 error using Google Talk video calls

Hey all,
I'm trying to get video calls to work on Google Talk, unsuccesfull so far. I have all the deps installed (using Pidgin from [extra]) and the account works. I can send and receive messages, but that's it.
I can receive sound, but can't send. I can see my own webcam, but my contact doesn't see mine and I don't see hers. Whenever the call is established, I get this error:
┌─[jente@lappy ~][20:53:56]
└─■ pidgin
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: kan gedeeld objectbestand niet openen: Bestand of map bestaat niet
I don't know why it defaults to libvdpau, as I own an ATi card. Anyway, I then try to mess with the settings as per so:
Video -> Output -> Plug-in: X Window System (Xv), Device: AMD Radeon AVIVO Video.
But it still crashes, with the same error.
That made me think that perhaps it is the input, so I changed those like so:
Video -> Input -> Plug-in: Test Input, Device: Standard.
Same error.
Next step, like below, still same error:
Video -> Input -> Plug-in: Video4Linux2, Device: Standard.
Lastly, I changed like this, but still, same error:
Video -> Input -> Plug-in: Video4Linux2, Device: Video WebCam.
Can someone explain to me why it keeps erroring out looking for an nVidia specific library?

So I used pkgfile to find out which package contains libvdpau_nvidia.so:
┌─[jente@lappy ~][20:38:24]
└─■ pkgfile -s libvdpau_nvidia.so
multilib/lib32-nvidia-utils
extra/nvidia-utils
I thought I could try to install nvidia-utils, as that might fix my issue. But I'm using Catalyst (as I said I got an ATI card) and nvidia-utils conflicts with catalyst-utils. So, I'm stuck again. Can anyone please fill in the blanks for me?

• Pidgin gtalk audio call Error and crash

I install pidgin 2.7.1 today ,but when I test audio call under gtalk with a friend ,
get this message:
First:
Error adding stream.
then I install gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-bad
learn from http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=732137
but when I select audio call again, it crashed !:(
so I rm gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-bad
and then get this msg:
Error creating session: Could not create the valve element
thanks for your help!!!:D

Could be either way. Actually, sometimes Encore is not able to handle the mismatch in audio and video duration and that is why it causes a crash or some other error.
Try matching the duration and then build. Hope this solves your problem.
Thanks,
Ramesh.

• Eternal Pidgin video webcam error.

(19:14:53) Error with your webcam
(19:14:54) Conference error
(19:14:54) The call has been terminated.
I thought this error was related with my old webcam (that camera had problems with several software) but I have now a new Microsoft camera (VX-800) that works in almost all apps, is detected by Skype and Flash inmediately but that pidgin error is the same. It is important to say I'm using ArchLinux with XFCE4.
I've installed gnome-media, farsight2, enable "Voice/Video settings plugin", setted gstreamer-properties.
Does anybody knows something?
Thank you.

Hmmm...that looks like Java issue... have you tired different web browser? Like firefox or chrome... I would suggest reinstalling java and checking as well from...http://www.java.com/en/

which is why is always best to use makepkg/pacman to install anything. You never know where things are at/go to.
If you MUST make && make install  try to use ./configure --prefix=/usr .  Many pkg use /usr/local/ as default (as you see)

• Pidgin MSN certificate error

Pidgin gave me this message when i tried to log into MSN today:
omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated
A temporary solution is to export the certificate from https://omega.contacts.msn.com (click the lock in firefox/chromium)
and save it with the name omega.contacts.msn.com in /etc/ssl/certs.
Import it in pidgin with the Tools->Certificates dialog, then delete the old MSN certificate.
.. Or wait for a fix.

• [Not really solved] Video with Pidgin is not working

Hi,
I would like to use video chat with Pidgin, but it doesn't work on my computer.
I have a webcam (:D), and it seems that it is correctly recognized because ` vlc v4l2:// ' shows me my face. I'm using XMPP (with a GMail account, but this shouldn't matter) and want to chat with someone using Ubuntu and Pidgin 2.6.6 (she has a webcam which seems to work correctly)
In the "Voice/Video settings" plugin, there are three options in the field Video → Input → Plugins : "default", "Test Input" and "Video4Linux" (and only "default" in the field Device, for the three plugins)
"default" and "Video4Linux" give
(21:03:34) Error with your webcam
(21:03:34) Conference error
(21:03:34) The call has been terminated.
as soon as I try to start a video call, and "Test Input" only shows me a test pattern (but I guess this is the meaning of "Test Input" )
BTW, I wonder why there is only "Video4Linux" and not "Video4Linux2"
The Pidgin's FAQ says this
How do I configure my microphone/webcam?
Currently, the command-line gstreamer-properties program is used. This is only available on GNOME-based systems. On other systems, Pidgin makes its best guess as to which device to use. A plugin is planned to support this functionality on other systems.
But I don't use GNOME, my desktop environment is LXDE.
What could I do to make my webcam work with Pidgin?
Thank you!
Edit:
- my system is up to date
- I have farsight2 and gstreamer0.10-{good,bad,ugly} installed

• SOLVED: Getting an Input/Output error when accessing certain files

My system started failing a few days ago because of sudden Input/Output errors when trying to access certain files. It was running fine until various applications started crashing like for example Pidgin (in retrospect probably because of DBus crashing). I decided to reboot and now can't login anymore because the DBus module fails to load which in turn means that HAL doesn't load either and so I can't use my keyboard to login.
The error message I get from DBus is that it can't access the file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.conf because of an Input/Output error. I tried to fix/see what was wrong using the arch livecd. Because I thought my problem had to do with a pacman update that had failed before I'd rebooted, I updated my system and I noticed that when pacman tried to access other files it came back with the same error message. The files seemed pretty random, one of them was fakeroot.conf and then several library files like libfaad (sorry this is kind of vague but I'm away from home right now and can't go online very often so I'm writing this from memory).
I'm guessing its a hard drive problem because checking the filesystem for errors came back with nothing. I was just wondering whether anyone had any other ideas before I go and reinstall. I'm going back home tomorrow so I'll be able to follow any advice/reinstall then.

UPDATE
It seems to be fixed! The second run of e2fsck fixed some more issues and the files that were causing the problems earlier seemed to have bad inodes. Boots fine now and I can get into my system. I checked and I still have a reasonable amount of free space so I don't think that was the reason ... I have no idea how the filesystem got so corrupted out of nowhere.
A few things are different, for example, it asked me to unlock the keyring and I couldn't mount my external encrypted drive anymore and had to do it manually with cryptsetup. e2fsck made quite a few changes so I imagine it's due to that. Shouldn't be to hard to fix though.
Thanks for your help!

• Argh, errors installing gtk-libs

Pacman sez:
error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
gcc-libs: /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so exists in filesystem (followed by about eleventy billion other "exists in filesystem" errors)
I have not installed anything outside of pacman, and I have not installed anything from the testing branch.  Just before installing gtk, I installed xorg without any errors and it runs great with my ATI radeon 7000.  So what's causing the conflict with gtk-libs?  Can't install pidgin without gtk...

Quite confusing statements. Below sHyLoCk recommends http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=37738 on June 2 2010 and on June 27 he declares his recommended package obsolet and ask a TU to delete! The problem with the sHyLoCk package is there is not page setup option. So I installed this package, it has got the page setup menu, but once I click the option, the application dies with the following output (Maybe helpful to debug for the maintainer, I am not an expert):

• Pidgin opening Hotmail in Firefox?

Hi,
I am confused about setting up Pidgin to allow Hotmail email box to open in Firefox.... do I need to edit prefs?
Help! :-)
MrG

thats good point I will test it out [I do use gnome btw!]
Error showing url: There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location.
emmm
Seems to be an xdg-open issue... if it tries to open firefox you get the error above
Double weird Pidgin does allow Yahoo mailbox to open in Firefox !!!!!
Not sure how to fix that one [I not that clever!]
