Error when exiting from ANY JavaFX app. (any workaround?)

I've had an ongoing problem when working with JavaFX, and even using applications created with it like SceneBuilder and FXExperience tools. As I reported in this bug: http://javafx-jira.kenai.com/browse/RT-27458 , any time I exit from any application that uses JavaFX, I get an error. My bug turned out to be a duplicate, and looking at the other report, it seems to be a result of the combination of the ATI-Radeon graphics card, Ubuntu, and JavaFX. It doesn't seem to matter whether the app is solely JavaFX, or embedded in Swing, whether it is installed as a native bundle or run directly from class files, or an executable jar. If it uses JavaFX and I run it, when I close it I get this error. It also doesn't matter whether I use jdk7 or an early-access build of jdk8.
This is becoming increasingly irritating as I further explore the technology and begin trying to work with it, going beyond simply following tutorials and whatnot, because it means I frequently run my programs to see if they actually work, and am much more frequently using tools like SceneBuilder. It doesn't seem to matter whether I run things from the command line, start them from an IDE, or in the case of installed applications, run them through Ubuntu's Launcher or Dash, when I exit I get an error message and an error log shows up somewhere. Especially when testing an application I'm working on, these logs quickly clutter up my directories and become an annoyance.
Does anyone have any suggestions or workarounds which might help avoid some of the annoyances from the problem? I have the ability to dual-boot Windows 7, and as the problem becomes increasingly annoying, have given some thought to doing my development there. However, I'm really not very comfortable in Windows, and it would involve making some pretty big changes to my workflow, so this isn't my favorite option.
I imagine that using another distro like Linux Mint would probably continue to have the same issues, since I think it would be using the same drivers for the graphics.
Changing computers is not currently an option for me. I'd love a Mac to develop on, but that's just not possible currently.
If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, workaround or tips I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay. Do you have any third-party iTunes plug-ins/add-ons installed?
(They can sometimes produce similar symptoms if they were written for an earlier version of iTunes, and they aren't liking a new version ... last time I can think of a major outbreak of add-on-related crashes-when-quitting was with the transition from iTunes versions 6.0.x to 7.0.x, though.)
If so, the following document might be of some assistance:

I'm getting an Error when trying to update or download any app from Mac App Store
Every time I try to update xCode to version 6.2 but I get this error :
The server gave an error during download: 503 Service Unavailable.
So I tried to download a random app from the App Store but I got the same error message.
    So any advices ?

    Hello HusseinAlBehary,
Sorry to hear your troubles updating and downloading apps from the Mac App Store. Based on when you were doing that, it looks like the Mac App Store was experiencing difficulties. It is not currently so you should be able to upgrade with out issues now. If you experience this in the future, look at the page below to start you on figuring out if it is something on your end or Apple’s end.

  • Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.  Says Lightromm will attempt to fix the problem the next time it launches, but on every re-launch I get the same message.  Any clue as to how to fix this problem?

I recently updated my HP laptop's OS from WIndows8 to WIndows8.1.  When I went attempted to open Lightroom5 I got the following message:
"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. "
"Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem the next time it launches"
Every time I relaunch I  get the same message.  I'd like to understand what might be causing the problem so I can remedy and get back to my photo editing. Any clue as to how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

Use Windows Explorer to open the folder containing your catalog. The normal location is Pictures\Lightroom. Locate a folder with the extension .lrdata and delete that folder. Then you should be able to start Lightroom again, and Lightroom will begin building and new previews folder. Do not delete anything else.

YAY!!! Saved it in my Mac's Firefox Bookmarks for easy future access!
Hope you are having a lovely afternoon today! I'm about ready to go bobo....I have an early meeting, and I don't want to oversleep! The nice part is that I work remotely, so I only have to wake up 15 minutes or so before the meeting.... I don't even use an alarm clock anymore (really, my iPhone alarm, which is much more pleasant), unless I have to get up at 6:30 or something....

  • I get a runtime error when I try to open itunes, any help?

I get a runtime error when I try to open itunes, any help?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"

I keep receiving this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and the app won't open. It said LR would try and fix this error next time I opened it but the error remains. I tried uninstalled and installing the app and the error remains.
Any Ideas here? Is there another app that may be telling it where to look for the cache and it no longer there? I was using a ramdisk for a bit but ditched it. Not sure if that has something to do with it but it seems suspect.
    Your thoughts?

Talked to Adobe support this morning, this is their response in case anyone else is looking for help. I'm running a Windows 7 box, LR 5.6.
Gokul: Click on start and type %appdata%, then open roaming folder.
      Edward: ok
      Gokul: Open Adobe folder.
      Gokul: Open Lightroom folder.
      Gokul: Open Lightroom folder> Preferences.
      Edward: ok
Gokul: Rename Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs file as Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefsOLD.
      Edward: OK
Gokul: Please check if you can launch Lightroom without any error.
Edward: it shows me a welcome screen and is asking me to select my country
      Edward: aka, register the software
Gokul: You can skip and launch it.
      Edward: LR catalog not found
      Gokul: Please select the catalog.
      Edward: my original catalog?
      Gokul: Yes.
      Edward: testing integrity of catalog
      Edward: loaded just fine
      Gokul: Okay.
Gokul: Please check if you can re-launch it again.
      Edward: yes, it worked!
      Gokul: Excellent!
Gokul: Since your preferences were corrupted you were facing issue so we renamed the preferences file to reset it.
      Edward: aha....ok
All of my import/export presets were intact along with develop user presets. I'm happy as a clam for my $10/month!

Error Launching LR 5: "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.  Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches."
I've tried renaming my catalog.lrcat file.  I've copied over my most recent backup of the catalog.lrcat and that didn't work either.

    On Mac:
PS - to open the previews "folder" (a "package" is just a "special" folder) on Mac, ctrl-click and choose "Show package contents.." - same way you open any other special folder, like .app or .lrplugin..

  • When backing up lightroom 4 catalog, get message "lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" this occurs during optimization stage of backup

i upgraded from lightroom 4 to lightroom 5 and installed it on a separate hard drive. Initially had no problems util my computer crashed due to the failure of the drive on which Lightroom 5 was installed. Since having my computer rectified, i am unable to use lightroom 5 getting the message "lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"
I can still use lightroom 4, however, i get the same message when i try to backup the catalog. This occurs during the optimisation phase of backup.
I suspect it is related to Lightroom 5 creating a catalog from the Lightroom 4 files and cannot now locate those files or that they have been corrupted.
Would appreciate any solutions / suggestions.

You need to delete your preview cache and have Lightroom rebuild it.   Cache location can be found here.

You don't delete a file, you have to delete a folder. Is that what you did?
If you deleted the folder specified above, and you still get the message, then it's the wrong folder. Use your operating system's search function and find ALL folders on ALL disks whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA, delete each one found, and then try opening Lightroom.

I get the following window on loading Lightroom 5.7 -
Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit.
Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches.
I have tried several restarts, without success. Also reinstalled Lightroom; no joy
    Any suggestions?

Using your system browser (Windows Explorer or Finder), open the folder that contains your catalog. In Windows it is in your pictures folder and then in a Lightroom folder. Inside of the Lightroom folder you will find another folder that has the extension .lrdata. It will have the same name as your catalog except for the extension. You need to delete that folder, and then start Lightroom again. Lightroom will generate a new previews folder, and you should be back in business.

Error message on start up "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" I uninstalled and downloaded it again and still get the same error.  At this rate I won't have any chance to use the 30 day trial period as it simply isn't working.  I have see suggestions elsewhere to delete a particular file, but I don't have it.  Any ideas?

You need to trash the preview cache. It’s in the main catalog folder.
Delete the folder with the ending Previews.lrdata
The default location for the Lightroom folder is normally Pictures/My Pictures if you did a standard installation.
N.B. do not touch files ending .lrcat
