Errors in Tomcat  startup window

Hi!
I'm using Tomcat 4.1.24 and have been testing out a simple shopping cart application that uses 3 servlets called Selection, Weight and Checkout. (This is an appplication of mine that works fine under the JSWDK.) Before I added the files for the shopping cart application, my web.xml file (in ROOT\WEB-INF) referred to a single existing servlet called FirstServlet:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE web-app
PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
"http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">
<web-app>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>FirstServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>FirstServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>FirstServlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/FirstServlet</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
</web-app>
In this form, there are no error messages when starting up the Tomcat server.
I then modified the web.xml file to refer to the additional servlets so:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<!DOCTYPE web-app
PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
"http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">
<web-app>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>FirstServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>FirstServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>FirstServlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/FirstServlet</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Selection</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>Selection</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Selection</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/Selection</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Weight</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>Weight</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Weight</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/Weight</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
<servlet>
<servlet-name>Checkout</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>Checkout</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>Checkout</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/Checkout</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>
</web-app>
Now, when I start up the Tomcat server, I get a series of error lines commencing with the following:
27-Jun-2003 10:13:03 org.apache.commons.digester.Digester error
SEVERE: Parse Error at line 49 column 11: The content of element type
"web-app" must match "(icon?,display-name?,description?,distributable?,
context-param*,filter*,filter-mapping*,listener*,servlet*,servlet-mapping*,session-config?,mime-mapping*,welcome-file-list?,error-page*,
taglib*,resource-env-ref*,resource-ref*,security-constraint*,login-config?,security-role*,env-entry*,ejb-ref*,ejb-local-ref*)".
at org.apache.xerces.util.ErrorHandlerWrapper.createSAXParseException(Unknown source)
Line 49 column 11 is the character position immediately following my terminating </web-app> tag.
Evidently, I need to include some further tags between those relating to consecutive servlets above in order to avoid these error messages. Does anybody know what is required here??
As it happens, Tomcat starts up successfully after producing these error messages and there is no problem with the running of the shopping cart application (which is the main thing, of course!), but I really would like to get rid of the error messages.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.
Jan

Please don't bother trying to answer my email. I've just realised what the simple solution is -- I must have all the <servlet> tags before all the <servlet-mapping> tags.
Cheers.
Jan

  • Password error at laptop startup windows 8.1

    Firstly, I cannot understand why MS is so intrusive and over the top in password control at startup.
    My machine, and software and I paid for it, therefore I own it together with the right to use it and all its software without interference from some mega-maniacal giant like microsoft!
    The only time I should need to login to MS is if I wish to visit the Store or request assistance!
    My story,
    4 days ago I spilt a glass of sweet sherry over my Acer Aspire 5742 keyboard.
    The laptop went dead.
    Dismantled laptop to MB, cleaned up sprayed out with  isopropyl alcohol  rebuilt and all ok.
    KB slightly sticky.
    Login to laptop rejected, nothing worked. Second computer onhand reset windows PW went back to laptop- no success.
    It would seem that the internal Registry control is at fault (my guess) - laptop connected to internet.
    Can anyone help.
    Thanks, Happy New Year All.
    Kevin

    Hi, Roger
    Sorry, two problems.
    Firstly, with the keyboard malfunctioning it was impossible to blind type the password into the Microsoft account.
    When trying to fix the keyboard issue it was necessary to restart or reboot the laptop this caused the requirement to login to the Microsoft account which was impossible. Because I was unable to correct typing because the pw is not visible. Hence my suggestion
    that the pw field should be visible text.
    I had switched off the requirement for users to login at startup.
    My question is “why am I forced by Microsoft to login to my Microsoft account at Startup?”
    My observation is that this should not be the case  and further that I should not be denied access to my computer.
    The keyboard issue is hardware, which I am still struggling with, could software be an issue as well, do you think?
    Do you think a replacement keyboard will fix the kb problem?
    I have connected a ms wireless kb and mouse  via USB to the laptop but the random input errors still occur. This unit works very well on a separate desktop.
    Your comments and observations would be most welcome.

  • Error occurs when startup window 8.1

    Hi!
    I'm su. I have a question for you about window 8.1
    After I login my account by password, it displays "preparing window". I waited about 10 minutes.
    result: all program, icon on desktop are disappeared.I checked my user but i saw a user whose name is "TMP"
    what happened ? Can you help me!
    Thank you very much and hope your help soon.

    can you still actually access the metro screen and desktop
    Hi there, Have you tried the following:
     - Virus Check
    - Registry Clean
    if you hae recently installed something and the issue wasn't present when installing then try doing a system restore which is when you computer rolls back to a time you specified
    to do a system restore go over to the charms bar, Or windows key > q and type in the search box system restore and press enter, don't click on any of the answers... after pressing enter a new windows should appear with about 4 search results, press on
    the one labelled create a system restore point, Once clicked press ok to any administrator prompts that appear and click on 'System restore' which is on the system protection page ypu can either choose recommended or custom, ypu can see what programs will
    be affected by the recommended rool back by clicking the 'Scan for affected programs' text if you pick custom then pick a restore point you know the computer was functioning at.
    I hope this helps
    King Regards - Harry

  • FacesException at Tomcat startup with Trinidad Render Kit

    I have an application that seems to work for other developers in our office but continues throwing errors when Tomcat is started. The FacesException thrown gives no message so it's been tough to debug. The InstantiationException thrown when trying to instantiate the Trinidad CoreRenderKitFactory doesn't give me much of a clue either.
    Hopefully someone has seen this before b/c I haven't found any useful clues in the logs or Googling around. If nothing else, maybe someone could help me get Tomcat to output more detailed log info in the console (I'm using MyEclipse) in case there is some more useful info in there.
    The environment is JSF 1.1, Tomcat 5.5.28, Java 1.5, Apache Trinidad 1.0.10, Spring 2.5
    Thanks,

  • Tomcat startup.bat question

    When execute Tomcat5/bin/startup.bat,it will appear a command window,all display information of Tomcat will appear in it.Is there a method which can put the display information in this command window into a TXT file? Because if tomcat or JVM raise fatal error,before I see the error display information of Tomcat in this command window,the command window has closed!!! Or is there a method which can keep the tomcat command window opening all time whether it raise so fatal error?
    Any idea will be appreciated!

    Open a command prompt: Start:run cmd
    This opens a dos prompt box for you.
    When you run tomcat this way, it won't close the box.
    Alternatively check the Tomcat5/logs directory for any error messages there.

  • Chkdsk run every time I startup Windows Vista under Bootcamp in 10.6

    I have Windows Vista 32 bits installed on bootcamp partition and it work fine in 10.5.
    Now I have upgrade my MBP (early 2008) to Snow Leopard, and upgrade WIndows Bootcamp drivers to version 3.0 from Snow Leopard DVD. Both installation were completed and run fine.
    The problem I have now is: Whenever I used Mac OS, shut down, then restart the WIndows Vista by pressing Option key at Macbook Pro startup, Chkdsk will run evry time, checking integrity of the Windows boot partition. I have to wait for more than 20 minutes before Chkdsk fix all errors, then reboot, and press Options key to get back into WIndows Vista without Chkdsk running.
    When I shut down Windows, and restart without goinb into Snow Leoprad, the boot process go OK without Chkdsk running.
    But whenever I shut fown Winodws and use Snow Leopard, then get back in to startup Windows, Chdsk run again. This is very annoyingm, and never occured in 10.5
    During Chkdsk session, the following errors occured and being fixed:
    Deleting index entry ._501 in index $I30 of file 9028
    Deleting index entry 501 in index $I30 of file 9028
    and after all process finished, Chkdsk stated that: There is a blank space that allocated as used, and has been fixed.
    Can any friend advise me what cause this problem? and How to correct it?
    I understanfd that the ._501 is in .Trashes folder on Windows partiton. It must be altered wwhen I use Snow Leopard, and must have to do with Trash in Mac OSX 10.6.
    Can any friend advise me how to solve this problem? Thank in advance

    The problem is repeatable. The same index and file to be deleted by Chkdsk remain unchanged every time I boot Windows under bootcamp after using Mac OS. If I reboot Windows many many times without using Mac OS, the error never occur.
    It must be Mac OSX Snow Leopard that is the culprit. Can any friend give me solution of how to solve this problem?
    When I try booting Windows in Parallels the boot is OK

  • Error starting Tomcat

    Hi all,
    I'm stupefied. In the past I had a Tomcat running in Apache, now I seem not to be able to accomplish it.
    My environment:
    OS: Windows XP
    Java: jdk1.6.0_03
    Apache: Apache2.2
    Tomcat: Tomcat6.0
    JAVA_HOME is set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03
    I used the Apache Tomcat Setup Wizard to install Tomcat. It is installed as an XP service. Starting fails, with the following entry in the log file:
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Procrun (2.0.3.0) started
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Running Service...
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Starting service...
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [174 javajni.c] [error] The specified module could not be found.

    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Run service finished.
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Procrun finished.
    I've been searching the Internet on the error message <tomcat jdk The specified module could not be found>, and have been fiddling around with my configuration, but still my Tomcat does not want to start. So does anyone have an idea what I need to do to get my Tomcat in the air?
    Abel

    Found the error, after searching some more on the Internet. It seems Tomcat misses a file, msvcr71.dll, which is located in the C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03\bin directory. If you copy this file to the <windows>/system32 directory, Tomcat starts without a problem.

  • Classic JVM hangs when running Tomcat as Windows Service

    Hi!
    I am running a Tomcat 3.2.4 application, written with Java 1.3.1_01.
    To run it as a Windows Service (W2000), I am using a slightly altered version of JavaService, which works fine so far: I can use both the "hotspot" and the "server" JVM's (by selecting the jvm.dll from the respective subfolder of the JDK/jre/bin folder).
    However, when I try to run the same application with the "classic" JVM, the service starts, inside of it Tomcat starts, the first output appears (to the stdout logfile) and after some time Tomcat simply hangs - it doesn't respond to anything anymore, 0% CPU, no output to logfiles anymore, doesn't even respond to normal Tomcat shutdown (e.g. when stopping the service, Windows waits the standard timeout then just kills it).
    Using the classic JVM in a console (e.g. not through JavaService and the classic/jvm.dll) works fine! No problems!
    Anyone here who can offer any help on this?
    Any hints why Tomcat may behave correctly in 5 out of six possible configurations (hotspot-server/client as service or console or classic as console) but hanging with 1 configuration (classic as service)?
    Also, on my W2000 box where this happens, the moment Tomcat hangs, I hear a Windows warning sound being played (the standard warning gong), like it happens when an info dialog pops up - only there is no dialog or whatever and the same moment Tomcat's CPU usage drops to 0% (although the app is still in startup and should do some more work for a few seconds).
    This also doesn't always happen at the same moment during startup, but each time at a different moment, e.g. I can not pin it down to something that is done during startup, it just happens a short while (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) after startup...
    Of course, I could simply say "forget classic, it's being phased out anyway", only: The SAME thing happens with IBM's Java 1.3 VM too (except for the gong sound, which seems to be Sun-JVM specific ;-)! And I would very much like my app to be able to run on IBM's VM (usually I'm using Sun's VMs everywhere, but we have a few stray W2000 boxes with SP2 where Sun's 1.3.1_0x VMs crash with our application [not hang like described above, but really crash, even when run as a console]) and on those boxes the IBM JVM in a console works fine - now I only have to get it working as a service too (and while researching why it hangs I saw that Sun's classic JVM hangs too, so I figured, I first find out why that happens, with the hope that the fix is applicable to IBM's JVM too...).
    Thanks already,
    Johannes

    re setting classpath when using JavaService
    for Win2k, Tomcat 3.3.1a, JDK1.2
    below is my script for creating/installing JavaService
    (based on Alexandria web site version). However, if i
    try to add .jar files to classpath (ie, CP environment
    variable), the service does not work. It only works
    when this single .jar file is there. How can .jar or
    .zip files be added to classpath for this service?
    I've not been working with Tomcar as a service, so can't help directly, but can offer some comments that might be of use (apologies if they aren't!).
    There are Tomcat scripts for V3.1, V3.2 and V4 with the JavaService code from Alexandria SC. Looks like you need one for V3.3 as well?
    In these others, there are fairly long lists of jar files in the classpath, so I would expect it to work correctly for the version you are using (unless there is a problem with the way that classloaders are involved, which is something that is known to get in the way for some app server-based programs).
    I would expect the classpath to work if changed from what you have listed to something like the following:
    set CP=%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\tomcat.jar;%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\jaxp.jar;%TOMCAT_HOME$\lib\other_library.jar
    Is that what you have tried to do, and found problems?
    Does this version of Tomcat bundle all of its resources into a single jar file (tomcat.jar), or is that a file you have created yourself?
    Is the problem found when loading and starting Tomcat itself, or from within your server-based application?
    Does it fail to load a 'standard' Tomcat library archive, or a jar file containing your own program code?
    set CP=%TOMCAT_HOME%\lib\tomcat.jar
    echo %CP%
    JavaService.exe -install "Jakarta-Tomcat"
    %java_home%\jre\bin\classic\jvm.dll
    -Djava.class.path=%CP% -Dtomcat.home=%TOMCAT_HOME%
    -Djava.security.policy=%TOMCAT_HOME%/conf/tomcat.policy
    -Xms128m -Xmx128m -start
    org.apache.tomcat.startup.Main -params start -stop
    org.apache.tomcat.startup.Main -params stop -out
    %TOMCAT_HOME%\logs\stdout.log -err
    %TOMCAT_HOME%\logs\stderr.log

    Seems these lines are telling the tale:
    Symbol file E:\ORADB\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\BIN\orannzsbb11.SYM does not match binary.
    Symbol TimeStamp=4b62bd94, Module TimeStamp=0 are different
    I don't understand why the symbol table doesn't match the binary unless someone 'stepped' on one of them (meaning overwrote them).  Have you checked %ORACLE_HOME%\bin for file times?

  • Access denied. Error in File C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\

    I have searched on Google and all over this forum and none of the solutions have fixed my problem.
    Crystal Version: Crsytal.Net for Visual Studio.Net 2005
    Server: Windows Server 2003
    Error:
    Access denied. Error in File C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\JuryDutyReport {D6296178-3E72-483E-B876-2DFC03D00841}.rpt: Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it.
    When I run my app locally through the Web Server that comes with ASP.Net, everything is fine, it is only when I deploy the application to the Windows 2003 Server that I get the error.
    I'm using impersonation in my ASP.Net application.  I have given that domain user full access to 'C:\Windows\Temp'', the export folder and even the folder where the Crystal Report resides on the Server.  When I run the application on the Web Server, I actually see the ".rpt" get created in the "C:\Windows\Temp" folder but yet it still says there is a permissions error.
    What is bizarre is that the code below that just sends the file to the printer automatically works:
      private void PrintJuryDutyReport(DataSet ds)
            //create report document
            ReportDocument crDoc = new ReportDocument();
            //load, set datasource and print options
            crDoc.Load(Server.MapPath("~/Reports/JuryDutyReport.rpt"));
            crDoc.SetDataSource(ds); //set datasource
            crDoc.PrintOptions.PrinterName = ddlPrinters.SelectedValue.ToString(); //set printername
            crDoc.PrintOptions.PaperOrientation = PaperOrientation.Portrait; //set paper orientation
            crDoc.SetParameterValue("ParamUsername", User.Identity.Name); //set parameter
            crDoc.PrintToPrinter(1, false, 0, 0); //send to printer
    I have to change the code to export to a PDF and this code doesn't work:
        private void PrintJuryDutyReport(DataSet ds)
            //report document
            ReportDocument crDoc = new ReportDocument();
            string myfile = @"G:\COPFS\COPFSPROD\ReportsTemp\MyPDF.pdf";
            //load, set datasource and print options
            crDoc.Load(Server.MapPath("~/Reports/JuryDutyReport.rpt"));
            crDoc.SetDataSource(ds); //set datasource
            crDoc.SetParameterValue("ParamUsername", User.Identity.Name); //set parameter
            //export through http
            crDoc.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, myfile);
            crDoc.Close();
            crDoc.Dispose();
            Response.ClearContent();
            Response.ClearHeaders();
            Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf";
            Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + myfile);
            Response.WriteFile(myfile);
            Response.Flush();
            Response.Close();
    Any help is greatly appreciated as I have to present this to end users tomorrow.

    Don, thanks for the response.
    As a last ditch effort, I granted "modify" to the Network Service Account on C:\Windows\Temp and that fixed the error.
    There are two things that are troubling about this:
    1) I'm impersonating a domain user in my ASP.Net application and when the PDF is created, the owner is that domain user, so I know impersonation is working.  So I wonder if ASP.Net picks and chooses what account it runs under at different times?
    2) It is a little scary for the Network Service Account to have this access but that people seem to be fine with it.
