Essbase+Obiee

Hi,
I have scenario, where I have imported one cube from Essable into Obiee Physical Layer. Then, changed the Outline of the Essbase Cube in the Essbase Server. That means I have added one more dimension in the Essbase Outline.
My requirement is, when I update the Obiee(Rpd) using Tool-->Utilities-->Update Physical Layer-->Execute, It should automatically reflect the changes of Essbase Outline in the Physical Layer of Rpd.
When I do the above process I am getting the following error. However, When I Import the Essbase cube once again as a fresh copy the changes are reflected in the physical layer of Obiee.

Page 8, 4.1 "Subsequent Changes to the Essbase Outline" answers this precisely. You can not import schema changes, but either drop the physical model and recreate it with a fresh import or replicate the changes manually in the physical model of the initial import.
Keeping the outline up-to-date manually is quite easy and in the most extreme cases requires a bit of UDML, but that's about it.

I am currently working on the proposal for a Financial BI reporting project for a company in the UK and would like to know the advantages of using ( ESSBASE + OBIEE Dashboards) solution over (OBIEE ADMIN TOOL + OBIEE Dashboards).
As the project has complex data model the client is insisting on Essbase; will ESSBASE give me more flexibility over BI Admin tool in data modeling and cube designing?

Hi,
OBIEE has infinitely superior reporting functionality to Essbase.
Essbase is absolutely excellent if you want to give your users data input and intuitive drill features. For financial projects Essbase is excellent for budgeting, planning, forecasting etc where you want a good deal of user input on a flexible and intuitive basis for data modelling from a large end user audience.
Essbase is a highly complimentary product for OBIEE as OBIEE fills its reporting needs, modelling Essbase cubes in the repository is brilliantly fast and Essbase' cubes create things like dimension hierarchies purely by dragging physical cubes into the business model layer.
11g features like asymmetrical drilling, ragged hierarchies etc could have been built with Essbase in mind - and MOLAP was definitely built with Essbase in mind.
I would recommend looking at the Oracle by Example for Hyperion (which has Essbase at its core) for a feel of what Essbase can do for you.

Essbase - OBIEE connectivity

I am trying to establish a connectivity between Essbase(11.1.1.1.0.112) and OBIEE (10.1.3.3.2) to generate reports.
I have
- Created a simple cube in essbase with 3 Dimensions (Year, Market, Products) and with some measures and loaded the data.
- Imported the outlline into OBIEE Physical layer, then to BMM and presentation layer (Just drag and drop)
- Generated a report in answers using the lowest level attributes (Leaf members of the Dimension hierarchies)
i.e. using (Month, City and television)
The problem is:
- When I am using a higher level attribute to create the report(Using Quarter, City and Television), it is not pulling out any data. My requirement is to pull out the aggregated data in the various quarters.
The basic aggregations rules are defined in the essbase outline. So I would like to know why OBIEE answers is not generating an aggregated report when I am selecting a higher level attribute from the dimension hierarchies.

You can write a calc script that has one line "CALC ALL ;" or you can run the default calc. In case you're not familiar with how to do this, right click on the database in EAS, select the Execute calculation pick from the pop up menu, and then select (default). 99% of the time the default calc is to be avoided, or even actively set to essentially null, but in your case it should be sufficient.

No Results when Filter - Essbase OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1

Hi,
We have created a repository using Oracle Business Intelligence 10.1.3.4.1 and Essbase 11.1.1.
The cube contains 5 dimensions.
When we create a Chart using Answers and filter the results (not shown in the columns) we do not get the results as it gives following No records found.
No Results
The specified criteria didn't result in any data. This is often caused by applying filters that are too restrictive or that contain incorrect values. Please check your Request Filters and try again. The filters currently being applied are shown below.
But If we change the criteria to show the filtered columns it shows the results in Table view and Chart.

It's one of the weird behaviours you face from time to time when using OBIEE and Essbase. Filtered columns need to be present in the request in order for the analysis to stop showing "No Results".
I haven't found any workaround yet and there's nothing to be seen in the change/enhancement requests existing on MOS right now.

OBIEE 11g agents are failed to connect to Essbase

OBIEE 11g agents are failed to connect to Essbase. We are using :USER & :PASSWORD (SSO) in connection pool setting to connect to Essbase.
User account exists in both OBIEE and Essbase. OBIEE dashboards which are based on Essbase are working fine. Essbase variables in RPD are upto date.
Only agents are failing and error says invalid credentials, but dashboard pages are running without any issue.
OBIEE: 11.1.1.5 (BP4)
Essbase: 11.1.2.1
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 43119] Query Failed: [nQSError: 96002] Essbase Error: Login fails due to invalid login credentials (HY000)
Essbase and OBIEE services are up and running.
Any help will be appreciated.

We finally implemented CSS Token option and ended up with this error. We are unable to connect to essbase with CSS Token option.
We followed the Oracle document to implement this.
[nQSError: 43119] Query Failed: EPMCSS-00301: Failed to authenticate user. Invalid credentials. Enter valid credentials. (HY000)
We did update this property:

How to use different essbase member combinations in columns in obiee

Hello,
I am trying to build a report in obiee which has an essbase ASO cube in the background. We have a measure 'A' that exists in BegBalance and a measure 'B' that exists in months Jan through Dec. So in my criteria, i set the dimensions i need along with "Periods - Default" and in the selection pane set the condition to keep only the months and begbalance. I also set the pivot so that the periods and the measures show up in columns.
When i run the report, in the columns for both measures, i get begbalance and the 12 months.
However, i only want measure A to show with begbalance and measure B to show with the 12 months. How can i accomplish this?]

Essbase reports in OBIEE 11g

Hi Experts,
The Essbase reports in OBIEE 11g is displaying the member names instead of the Alias names. However in OBIEE 10g the Alias names are rightly displayed.
Can anyone please suggest on how it is possible to display the alias names in OBIEE 11g?

thanks for ur reply. I checked the above workaround but found that the option Display Column -> Alias is not enabled. So am not able to select it. Hence now Member names is selected.

Federation of Essbase with OBIEE 11g

I have a ragged unbalanced Accounts hierarchy in the Essbase cube which I have imported into the OBIEE repository besides the Scenario,Version,Entity,Period and Year hierarchies. Now I have a detail table in the Oracle database with Account,Version,Scenario,Entity with Value(Measure) at the lowest level of each hierarchy. I have read that for federation, the hierarchies need to be balanced. In the relational table Account dimension, I have maintained consistent no. of levels with null values wherever leaves are absent. Now as the Accounts hierarchy in the Essbase cube is unbalanced, how should I design to enable the federation between the Essbase cube and relational table? OBIEE version is 11.1.1.6 and Essbase is 11.1.2.2. Your help is highly appreciated.

The issue has been solved by using Lookup tables. The relational database table has also been populated with alias member names. Then in OBIEE BMM layer, using Lookup Sparse function, the Essbase alias members have been used to lookup the value against the Relational Database table which served as lookup table in the BMM layer.

Essbase as a source in OBIEE 11g and using lookup to Relation database

We are trying to implement Essbase as primary source for our obiee 11g repository and using relational database as secondary source of data.
I was using a lookup functionality in repository to lookup value from one of the Essbase's Dimension's attribute to relational database, however, there is error when testing this in OBIEE Dashboards.
And tried to look this error in support.oracle and googled it but was not able to find anything on it.

Is Essbase 11.1.1.3 supported as a source for OBIEE 11g?From the certification matrix (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-enterprise-edition/bi-11gr1certmatrix-166168.xls) we can see that only Essbase 9.3.3+ and 11.1.2+ are supported, not 11.1.1.3

Throws severe error in OBIEE SA with Essbase Cube as Source

Hi All,
Currently we built the SA using Essbase ASO cube as source.Wehen we are trying to drag more then 4-5 dimension hierarchies it throws an severe error
Essbase Error: Query is allocating too large memory(>4GB) and cannot be executed.Query allocation exceeds allocation limits(HY000)
I am not able to identify the same in Essbase Excel addin.All are single-level based hierarchies and the count of dimensions is not more than 1000.
Can someone help me out to find out a way to resolve this issue or any work around.

What is the version that you using for OBIEE and Essbase ?? This is a know bug when Essbase as a source is used for OBIEE reporting. Try to get in touch with Oracle Support by raising an SR and getting correct patch (set of library files) for your system.
This shud solve your problem.

OBIEE 11g write back to Essbase and run calc script feature

Hi,
I have a requirement to write back into Essbase Cube and run calc script from OBIEE dashboard.
From what i have search on google, we must deploy additional Java Script into weblogic, but that is before OBIEE 11.1.1.6.
I have 2 question:
- Does OBIEE 11.1.1.6 already supported native write-back to Essbase and running calcscript?
- Anyone has example of the custom java-script for write back and running calcscript?
And another, if there are requirement like this, is it better to install Essbase Add-in on Microsoft Excel and do the what-if analysis there, then just display the report on OBIEE dashboard? (based on user-friendliness and the complexity on maintenance)

Even I am trying to achieve the same thing as you have mentioned but think that it is not possible to achieve easily in obiee 11.1.1.6, though we do have a work around to perform a writeback in Essbase cube using JAPI as mentioned below.
Also we can call Hyperion reports from OBIEE using Action Links and also pass parameters to the same but dont know if it runs calculation script.

Flattening Essbase Measures in OBIEE 11g

Hi all,
I'm using OBIEE 11g. After importing a cube from Essbase to the physical layer in the RPD, I'm choosing "Convert measure dimension to flat measures" to flatten the measures. Now I have all the measures as a flat list. However, the "Measures" dimension/hierarchy still exists in the physical layer. I find this strange.
Then when I drag the cube to the business model layer, that "Measures" dimension/hierarchy isn't brought to the business model layer. I think this is correct, because the measures are already flattened, therefore there should not be any measure dimension/hierarchy in the business model layer.
My questions:
1. If the measure dimension/hierarchy is not used anymore in the business model layer, why does it still exist in the physical layer?
2. What is the impact if I remove it from the physical layer? (Note: I tried this, so far no error, but not sure if later on I will encounter error because of this)

I'd suggest to keep it as it is in Physical Layer inorder to avaoid any future issues/enhanced requirements.

Sum Aggregation Error in Physical & BMM Layer in OBIEE 11g with Essbase 11

Hi everyone,
I'm using OBIEE 11g with Essbase 11 as the data source. I'm using Sample Basic database from the Essbase as my data source. If I'm using the hierarchy for the measures (so I don't flatten the measures), and when I changed the aggregation in both physical and BMM layer from Aggregate_External to Sum, I can't create a report at all from the Answers.
Does anyone encounter the same thing? Any ideas/solution about this? Please help.

But when I queried the dimensions one by one (only single dimension each), no error was shown.
This only happens if I use Sum in the physical and BMM layer. If I use External_Aggregation, these errors do not happen. And if I flatten the measures, these errors also do not happen.

Using CASE WHEN for Essbase column in OBIEE 11g

I have a business model in OBIEE 11g, taking the source from Essbase 11. The measures of the Essbase cube in the physical layer is flattened, and the aggregations for the measures are set to SUM.
The Product dimension has 5 generations. In Product logical table, I created a logical column called "Product Grouping" using a simple CASE WHEN formula:

WHEN "TEST"."Product"."Gen5,Product" IN ('100-30', '200-20') THEN 'Group 2'

Problems:
1. If I don't place this "Product Grouping" in the logical level/hierarchy, I got error in the report when I simply show Product Grouping and a measure.
2. If I place this "Product Grouping" in the logical level/hierarchy (on the 5th level), no more error in the report when I simply show "Product Grouping" and a measure. The measure value also shows the correct SUM (group by). However, when I add "Gen1,Product" the "Product Grouping" and the measure value suddenly becomes not grouped by.
Has anyone ever tried and encountered something like this? Any thoughts?

Hi Deepak, thansk for the suggestion.
However, I can't use calculated item for this report because:
1. incorrect result will be shown when my measures involve a formula to derive a percentage value.
2. calculated item is not available if we do "combine requests" (or union) in 11g.
Any thoughts anyone on how to solve this? Is this just me, or it's a bug?
