Essbase - OBIEE connectivity

Hi,
I am trying to establish a connectivity between Essbase(11.1.1.1.0.112) and OBIEE (10.1.3.3.2) to generate reports.
I have
- Created a simple cube in essbase with 3 Dimensions (Year, Market, Products) and with some measures and loaded the data.
- Imported the outlline into OBIEE Physical layer, then to BMM and presentation layer (Just drag and drop)
- Generated a report in answers using the lowest level attributes (Leaf members of the Dimension hierarchies)
i.e. using (Month, City and television)
The problem is:
- When I am using a higher level attribute to create the report(Using Quarter, City and Television), it is not pulling out any data. My requirement is to pull out the aggregated data in the various quarters.
The basic aggregations rules are defined in the essbase outline. So I would like to know why OBIEE answers is not generating an aggregated report when I am selecting a higher level attribute from the dimension hierarchies.

You can write a calc script that has one line "CALC ALL ;" or you can run the default calc. In case you're not familiar with how to do this, right click on the database in EAS, select the Execute calculation pick from the pop up menu, and then select (default). 99% of the time the default calc is to be avoided, or even actively set to essentially null, but in your case it should be sufficient.

As the project has complex data model the client is insisting on Essbase; will ESSBASE give me more flexibility over BI Admin tool in data modeling and cube designing?

Hi,
OBIEE has infinitely superior reporting functionality to Essbase.
Essbase is absolutely excellent if you want to give your users data input and intuitive drill features. For financial projects Essbase is excellent for budgeting, planning, forecasting etc where you want a good deal of user input on a flexible and intuitive basis for data modelling from a large end user audience.
Essbase is a highly complimentary product for OBIEE as OBIEE fills its reporting needs, modelling Essbase cubes in the repository is brilliantly fast and Essbase' cubes create things like dimension hierarchies purely by dragging physical cubes into the business model layer.
11g features like asymmetrical drilling, ragged hierarchies etc could have been built with Essbase in mind - and MOLAP was definitely built with Essbase in mind.
I would recommend looking at the Oracle by Example for Hyperion (which has Essbase at its core) for a feel of what Essbase can do for you.

Planning DB Connection vs. Essbase DB Connection for DTS

Hi,
We have built a application in Hyperion Planning (Version 11.1.1.3) and I am now working on creating Hyperion Financial Reports. I have a question about the kind of database connection that should be established in order to avail Dynamic Time Series members in financial reports to obtain YTD/MTD/QTD values. What I understood from FR Admin Guide is that to avail DTS values, we have to create Essbase connection (and not Planning connection). My doubt is that although we have created application in Planning (and we refresh to Essbase), will there be a problem if I create an Essbase database connection for a Planning application?

Usually for reporting it is recommended to connect to Essbase. I guess the reasons are
Some performance issues, and some reporting requirements based on Attribute dimensions etc.
I don't think that anybody would connect to planning for reporting(FR)

I installed and configured EPM 11.1.2.2. After running the validate.bat file I found the error for validation Essbase server connection to my server name. The error is as follows

Can latest Essbase version connect to Oracle data sources directly?

As you know in Essbase 9.3.1, you only can connect to any relational database via an ODBC data source and Essabse cannot talk to relational databases directly. Can Essbase 11.1.1 can talk to Oracle database directly or via OCI?

Essbase Studio in 11X add jdbc connections, but there is still no "direct" connection. I'm not sure if I would want one. It would imply that Essbase is now tied directly to Oracle databases and we could lose the flexability to connect to other sources.

Essbase+Obiee

Hi,
I have scenario, where I have imported one cube from Essable into Obiee Physical Layer. Then, changed the Outline of the Essbase Cube in the Essbase Server. That means I have added one more dimension in the Essbase Outline.
My requirement is, when I update the Obiee(Rpd) using Tool-->Utilities-->Update Physical Layer-->Execute, It should automatically reflect the changes of Essbase Outline in the Physical Layer of Rpd.
When I do the above process I am getting the following error. However, When I Import the Essbase cube once again as a fresh copy the changes are reflected in the physical layer of Obiee.

Page 8, 4.1 "Subsequent Changes to the Essbase Outline" answers this precisely. You can not import schema changes, but either drop the physical model and recreate it with a fresh import or replicate the changes manually in the physical model of the initial import.
Keeping the outline up-to-date manually is quite easy and in the most extreme cases requires a bit of UDML, but that's about it.

ESSBASE server - Connect Error 1042010

Hi All,
I am having trouble connecting to Essbase Server on a new install i have done on a windows 2003 32 bit. The Installation went successful, but when i try to start the Essbase server, I am getting below error in essbase.log.

Network Error [10048]: Unable to Bind Host Server Socket On Port [1423]
I have checked that the 1423 port is open is in LISTENING status. My essbase.cgf doesnt have NETDELAY and NETRETRYCOUNT entries, but it does have AGENTPORT as 1423.
Also, I am able to login MAXL client as:
MAXL> login
2> admin
3> admin123;
OK/INFO - 1051034 - Logging in user [admin@Native Directory].
OK/INFO - 1241001 - Logged in to Essbase.
I am new to this stuff and appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

HI,
I don't think your observations are conclusive about whether Essbase is configured to run on port 1423. Generally this gets changed by editing the Essbase.cfg, AGENTPORT I think maybe something else is already listening on the port.
Try this:
netstat -ab |find /i "1423"
you will get something like
TCP machine:1423MrBlue:0 LISTENING 14556
The number at the end of the line with LISTENING is the pid (process ID) you want: 14556
then type:
WMIC PROCESS where "Processid='14556'" get Caption,Commandline,Processid
You will get something like:
Caption CommandLine ProcessId
Essbase.exe C:\HYPERION\AS\bin\Essbase.exe 14556
If the WMIC result is Essbase.exe, then essbase is running on that port.
What is might be happening is another process is on the port, so Essbase can't open and listen on it - or the network is routing your request to a different port.

ESSBASE server - Connect Error 1042032:

Hi All,
I am having trouble connecting to Essbase Server on a new install i have done on a windows 2008 64 bit. The Installation went successful and I am able to start the essbase server from command prompt. From the Administration service Console, I can connect to Admin Server.
I am able to add a new Essbase server, but when I try to connect or start it gives a following error:
Error: 1042032: Network Error: Unable to detect ESSBASE server listening on IPv4 or IPv6 network protocols on hostname - [Essbase11G].
I have also ensured that all Hyperion services are running on the Windows services. I did not find any helpful threads on this error and am new to this product.
Appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

No Results when Filter - Essbase OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1

We have created a repository using Oracle Business Intelligence 10.1.3.4.1 and Essbase 11.1.1.
The cube contains 5 dimensions.
When we create a Chart using Answers and filter the results (not shown in the columns) we do not get the results as it gives following No records found.
No Results
The specified criteria didn't result in any data. This is often caused by applying filters that are too restrictive or that contain incorrect values. Please check your Request Filters and try again. The filters currently being applied are shown below.
But If we change the criteria to show the filtered columns it shows the results in Table view and Chart.

It's one of the weird behaviours you face from time to time when using OBIEE and Essbase. Filtered columns need to be present in the request in order for the analysis to stop showing "No Results".
I haven't found any workaround yet and there's nothing to be seen in the change/enhancement requests existing on MOS right now.

Essbase 11. X.
I Downloaded "Oracle EPM System 11.1.2.1" client and unzip that package and installed Essbase/Essbase Client.
and configured environment variables as specified in the "Recommendations for configuring Essbase middleware" KB
Let me know I done hear anything wrong.
note : OS is windows 7 and Essbase/Essbase Client able to connect to the Essbase server.( its on Unix machine)

OBIEE connection with HFM

I am running OBIEE 11.1.1.5 on Linux and client installed on Windows.
I want to use Hyperion Financial Management data source in OBIEE will it run fine?
How can make connection in obiee?

The HFM client that is required by the OBI 11g integration is Windows Based and you cannot just run the Oracle BI Client tools with the HFM client on the Windows machine because it partially uses the Java Host which only gets installed with the full (simple, enterprise, or software only) installation of Oracle BI 11g.
You may want to have a look at the Oracle BI Financial Management Analytics application which was just released after Open World 2011. It is a full blown end-to-end solution integrating HFM and HCM and front ending the data through Oracle BI. They've done the heavy lifting there for you and it should provide a solid example for you to feed off of.

Frequent Error in Reports (Connection between OBIEE and Essbase)-Urgent

I'm developing OBIEE reports based on EssBase cubes.
Sometimes (for certain reports / prompts) I get following error messages
State: HY000. Code: 10058. NQODBC SQL_STATE: HY000 nQSError: 10058 A general error has occurred. Essbase Error: Invalid login id - request EssSetActive failed (HY000)

My connection pool configuration:
Call interface: Essbase
Maximum connections: 10
Shared logon: True (a single user / password used for all queries)
Use Session: True (also tried false - doesn't help)
Use multithreaded connections: True
Does anybody have an idea - what causes these problems and how can I prevent them?
Also i have a doubt whether this error is caused due to essbase subtitution variable which is used in my report.

Essbase Connection error: version 11.1.2

HI all,
I am facing an issue...
I am not able to see the SQL data source in the EAS - when I click File>Open SQL.
It gives error - There are No data sources defined, SQL data sources option will be disabled and that is the case.
somwhere i read to modify/copy-paste the odbc.ini file but unfortunately i have not been able to find the odbc at he location
$EPM_ORACLE_HOME/common/ODBC/Merant/x.x/odbc.ini
I have installed essbase on windows 2003 sp2 and right from the beginning it is beset with errors.
any ideas or links to help with the installation.

but i couldnt connect to the sql data sources to essbase
BTW my oracle http server does not work
neither does weblogic server .
could that be the cause of essbase not connecting to the datasources
