/etc/security/limits.conf

Hello
OS : Redhat enterprise Linux Ver 5
When installed as per install guide, I see that /etc/security/limits.conf updated with entry as :
oracle hard nofile 65536
1) Why is the default limit of 1024 not sufficient ?
2) Does oracle opens more than 1024 files at a time ?
3) How to find the exact list of files open by the oracle user at any given point in time ?

Hi,
that's a good question. I don't neither have an answer but I assume that especially in the past (8i) when datafile size was limited that it was causing problems on huge databases. Making it enough high could also reduce their support effort. This is just may stomach feeling which I am telling you but the truth will tell you someone else. Maybe someone else here in the forum knows more than me.
I am not 100% sure but:
$ lsof|grep oracle|wc -l
1762 shows me over 1024 open files. This with a running ASM instance, a DB and a listener.

So I am running a Arch installation without a graphical UI and Im running elasticsearch on it as its own user (elasticsearch). Since elasticsearch needs to be able to handle more than the 4066 files that seems to the be the default, I edit /etc/security/limits.conf

I restart the system, but the limit is seemingly still 4066. What gives? I read on the wiki that in order to enforce the values you need a pam enabled login. I dont have a graphical login manager and
grep pam_limits.so /etc/pam.d/*
Gives me this..

/etc/pam.d/polkit-1:session required pam_limits.so
/etc/pam.d/su:session required pam_limits.so

Seems like adding the LimitNOFILE parameter to the systemd service file did the trick, but still doesnt explain why limits.conf isnt being enforced.

Option "ctrl:nocaps" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf ignored

I have a single-user laptop, so I'd like to configure my X keyboard layout and options globally instead of doing it for any WM/DE I might happen to use. And most importantly, the desktop manager (GDM) should already use my layout. So my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf contains this section:

The result is that I have my German Dvorak layout in GDM and in whatever WM I choose there. However, the ctrl:nocaps option seems to be ignored. In GDM, CapsLock is still CapsLock, not an additional CTRL. Why not?
Here's the Xorg.0.log in case that might shed some light. (Well, it actually only shows that the options seems to be applied to all keyboard devices...)

Yes, exactly. I do get the Dvorak layout that's set in 10-evdev.conf, but not the ctrl:nocaps option that's set there as well.

Setting global umask via NSUmask or /etc/launchd.conf and /etc/launchd-user.conf broken?

The procedure to change the default global umask from 0022 to 0002, so that most files created by one user on a machine will be read-write by other users in the same group, seems to have been broken or to have been changed in OS X Lion from OS X Snow Leopard. What worked as far back as OS X 10.4 and was officially documented was done from Terminal: "defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences NSUmask 2" (with a sudo, if not logged in as 'root').
Another way documented in various places and which I actually used through OS X 10.6 was also done via Terminal. Two files were created: /etc/launchd.conf (for system-wide global umask) or /etc/launchd-user.conf (for user-specific global umask). The contents of each were simply the single umask command, "umask 002" or ("umask u=rwx,g=rwx,o=rx", I can't remember which variant I used - they're functionally the same, though).
No matter which method I use, the 2nd or the 1st, the global umask no longer changes.
Does anyone know whether this has been deliberately hobbled under OS X Lion, requiring purchase of OS X Lion Server? Is this an OS X Lion bug? Or, am I looking at something wrong?

[SOLVED]xpra + winswitch - best practice due to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*

Running xpra causes some headaches.
The application builds fine and installs just perfectly, the troubles comes from the default Xorg configuration is no longer stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's now stored and read from numerous files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ where just so happen to be my 5-nvidia.conf.

tl;dr: 5-nvidia.conf is trying to get loaded after xf86-video-dummy is loaded (which is the default for xpra).
Now to the question: What's the best practice because there's no information about this issue, and i can't be the only one who's run in to this since the xorg.conf was removed. At the moment I move all my nvidia configs out of the way, start xpra and move them back in. This works for the better part as long as i execute xpra with my own scripts.
But is there a better way (which doesn't perhaps include recreating xorg.conf since that appears to be something you should walk away from)?

Good thinking! (xpra is basically just screen but for x, or a X11 tunnel via SSH).
After a really quick poking around and remembering that xpra really just uses xorg-server-xvfb and at the very bottom of /etc/xpra/xpra.conf there's a line that says:
xvfb=xpra_Xdummy -dpi 96 -noreset -nolisten tcp +extension GLX +extension RANDR +extension RENDER -logfile ${HOME}/.xpra/Xorg.${DISPLAY}.log -config /etc/xpra/xorg.conf
Appending -configdir appears to be working.
Here are the full steps:

*nvidia* would have to match your graphic-driver-config that would cause xorg-server-xvbf to crash.

I can navigate to the pico prompt in terminal ... but when it asks for pw, I try to type, the cursor just blinks, doesn't move, nothing.

I'm used to vi. You use control keys to navigate and make changes. It has two modes, command and insert. In command mode, to delete the '#' character, for example, move the cursor to '#' and type 'x' to delete it. Type 'i' to enter insert mode and add new text. Press 'esc' to go back to command mode.
There are numerous ways to save and quit. Usually you type 'ZZ' to save and quit. On some of these system files, their permissions are too restrictive for that. You have to do it the hard way. I can't even chmod to give myself rights to write to httpd.conf . "Operation not permitted."
Don't try that. Many tools will rightfully refuse to even launch if they detect that their administrative config files have been incorrectly modified.

There is, it is "sudo". Only an admin user has the ability to use sudo to gain root permissions.

Virgin /etc/httpd/httpd.conf

Hi, I tried to install php5 from the entropy site. I got install errors. PWS would then hang during startup. Checked error log and it showed a problem with httpd.conf. I saw a few different versions in the /etc/httpd directory. I sudo cp-ed a few and finally found one to work (i.e. PWS is up). "View this computer’s website at http://10.0.1.7/ or your personal website at http://10.0.1.7/~rob/"
However Document root is set to the apache directory (I can see it in httpd.conf). If I enter the url indicated by the PWS preferences as the "computer's website" I get the generic apachepage. If I enter url http://10.0.1.7/~rob/" I get:

Without knowing what you've done to get to the point you are at now, it's impossible to say whether rolling back the httpd.conf file will fix any of your problems, or even create new ones.
The good news is that you already have a virgin copy - Apple provide a httpd.conf.default file in /etc/httpd You can copy that file to /etc/httpd/httpd.conf to restore the default setup.
As for the speciic issues you're having, /~username/ directories require the userdir module to be enabled. Check /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for the lines:

and make sure they're not commented out.

It already is unformatted - it's a plain text file. The issue is that for security reasons it's owned by root, so unless you invoke TextEdit as root you cannot edit this file (TextEdit doesn't have the ability to overwrite the file).
If you want a GUI app, consider TextWrangler, a free text editor that can edit root-owned files via authentication.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The default root directory is /Library/WebServer/Documents which you can easily get to in the Finder. If you want to change that you'll need to edit the DocumentRoot and Directory directives in httpd.conf.
If you mean you want to see the /etc/httpd directory in the Finder, just use Go -> Go to Folder and enter /etc
Although normally hidden, the Finder will display this directory if you ask it. However you will probably have trouble deleting files in here since they're all owned by root.

/etc/launchd-user.conf and launchd.conf no longer work in Yosemite 10.10.2

As the subject says. According to this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201684, they should. However according to the man page for launchd.conf. "launchd.conf is no longer respected by the system." Setting "umask 077" in /etc/launchd-user.conf should be forcing the default file creation permissions to 600, and folder creation to 700, but it is not doing anything.
I've tried this on a fresh install of 10.10.2. doing a "touch 1" creates a file named 1 with the perms -rw-r--r--. On a Mavericks install it creates a file named 1 with the perms -rw------- as expected.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Starting with filesystem 2010.01-1, after each filesystem update I am finding a file called /etc/ld.co.confe, which is a copy of /etc/ld.co.conf (this is besides the usual /etc/ld.co.conf.pacnew). I took a quick look at PKGBUILD and filesystem.install in /vas/abs/core/filesystem, there was nothing pointing to this file...
Does anyone knows its purpose? The current version is filesystem 2010.02-3.

SOLVED update blanks /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf

I just ran pacman -Syu and udisks2 was updated with "warning: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf.pacsave". When I looked at the diffs, I noticed that it essentially had removed all contents from that file.
Is there any reason why udisks2 would do this? When I check pacman -Qo /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf, nothing is reported as "owning" that conf file, which is correct, since I created it myself...?

There wasn't. The file 10-synaptics.conf was one created by Arch. With version 1.6.2-3, they switched to the upstream config, which is 50-synaptics.conf.

I wrote the according to the wiki recommendations, but it doesn't work. Issuing setxkbmap -layout "cz,us" -option "grp:alt_shift_toggle" automatically after logging in serves as a temporary solution, but I'm highly interested in fixing the primary issue. I would greatly appreciate if someone helped my find the error in my config file and/or posted their way to change the xorg keyboard layout in order to compare it with my way and find the error. Also note that I'm using Awesome WM so desktop environment ways of setting the keyboard layout aren't applicable in my case.

@chris_l: Thank you for your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-keyboard-layout.conf.
I have found out that the actual problem isn't in the configuration file but in the actual keyboard (more accurately xorg) - the keyboard gets incorrectly identified and xorg seems to think that it's a pointer (mouse). When I connect a different keyboard, the layout gets set correctly, xorg just isn't setting the keyboard layout correctly to the keyboard that I use. I have filed a bug report so this thread can be considered closed.

How to make/save changes to the file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - in Terminal

I'm new to Unix/Terminal and am attempting to make changes in the Apache Web server's configuation file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - so that I can use PHP locally. (The "LoadModule php4" has a "#" mark in front of it which I am attempting to remove.) This approach is suggested in the book "Dreamweaver MX 2004 with asp, coldfusion, and php." The book includes instructions on how to adjust the files using pico in Terminal. But the book doesn't explain how to work with Unix/Terminal to enable the right access permission to save the changes in Terminal. I've been able to make the changes in pico the book recommends, but I'm not able to save the changes. I'm the only user of the computer.
Please advise how to be able to save the changes. Thank you!

httpd.conf is owned by 'root'. therefore, to save your changes you need to use 'sudo' when editing the file. before you do that, you should type in
man sudo
and read about what sudo actually does. be aware that it can give you all-encompassing power to do many things - including messing things up.
once you have read about sudo, first do (substitute full paths, if necessary - e.g. /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for httpd.conf)
sudo cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.bak
to backup your httpd.conf file (in case you make an error), then do
sudo nano httpd.conf
to make your changes, then save the file.
then do
sudo apachectl configtest
to test changes to the server config (it should let you know if there is an error).
finally do
sudo apachectl graceful
to restart the server and re-read the config file.

Lxdm is ignoring its theme setting in /etc/lxdm.lxdm.conf

All I get is a plain grey greeter screen despite the 'Industrial' setting in the config file. This happened suddenly and behaved as it used to for ages until now.

I had the same problem, but found that I'd uninstalled librsvg. Reinstalling this package fixed the problem.

[Solved]I deleted /etc/systemd/logind.conf by mistake

I deleted /etc/systemctl/logind.conf by mistake with
sudo rm /etc/systemd/logind.conf
How can I get that file back?

it's ok now, I reinstalled it with
sudo pacman -S systemd
The problem is solved, thank u so much everyone.

SOLVED: Created /etc/X11/xorg.conf, now system won't boot.

I was trying to solve an issue with display resolution not sticking and it was suggested to me that I create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I created the file and put in the lines that I had in my .xprofile related to xrandr.
Now... my system will not boot. It appears to get hung up trying to detect my ethernet connection. I tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to avoid X windowing, no dice.
What's more, my system rescue pen drive appears to have died. I still have my Arch install CD.
All I want to do is delete xorg.conf. My arch root is a logical volume so I have no idea how to mount it after I boot from the Arch install CD, or if I can even do this.
Update: So embarrassing, my mount command was wrong. Once I did something that looked like this:
mount /dev/VolGroup0/root /mnt/
I was able to get into /etc/X11 and delete xorg. conf. Rebooted and all appears well.
