Ethernet card stopped working after a bad blackout.

Hi everybody,
we had a bad blackout yesterday night, with a terrible peak of electricity before that. When I turned my mac mini on again, it would not see any more the ethernet card.
In the system preferences it did not appear any more, and when asking for "Network Port Configurations" the Integrated Ethernet appeared grayed out. From the command line i then tried "ifconfig en0" and the answer is: "ifconfig: interface en0 does not exist".
I removed the interface, with the intention of adding it back again, and the only possibility that comes up in the menu (besides bluetooth and airport) is a "6 to 4" interface (which I have no idea what it is). Tried that, but it didn't seem the right thing to do...
I then switched off the computer and started it with the self test disk. The disk did not report any problem at all, however the ethernet address that seems to be there makes no sense to me (it contained characters like ")" and "!"). I restarted, and gave a look at the log files in /var/log/system.log and the only suspicious thing I see is:
"Jul 29 18:38:18 my-computer /System/Library/CoreServices/mcxd.app/Contents/MacOS/mcxd: MCXD.initializeDirectoryServices: Unable to get the ethernet address "
Is there anything else I can try to see if the ethernet card is still there and functioning?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Luca

Hi Luca, and a warm welcome to the Forums!
It does sound like it is a goner, but just to be certain it's not some damaged Software...
Boot from your Tiger Install Disk, put in your language, then look up top for the Menubar, use System Profiler from there, if Ethernet still doesn't give an addy, well, that's about it.

  • Ethernet Card Stopped Working (BCM5785M)

My ethernet card stopped functioning about a week ago, at the time I thought my cable had died and did not think to much of it. Then I checked the cable in my desktop computer and it worked fine and was able to connect to my router as well as the interent. To the best of my recolection I did not install any new software that may have cuased the problem, just standard pacman package updates. I ran throught the Networking wiki to try and see if I could find anything wrong but was not able to solve the problem. The odd thing is when I try and connect to my router I obtain and IP address of 192.168.1.128 which to my recolection was a fall back address when an error occurs. I normally will run my laptop on my ethernet card just becuase of shotty wireless router suppled by my ISP. I am able to use my wireless card without problems, other then the substandard performace of the wireless router, so my networking appears to be generally functioning on the computer.

Well thanks for the compliment. this is my first post here but not my first go with linux. I started using linux back when Red Hat was still avalaible under the GNU as a free distro. Then to Fedora in beta, Gentoo. Ubuntu, and now Arch. I have been running arch for about two years and just have not needed to post do to generally finding my answers in the wiki or on a forum post either here or else linuxquestions as well. I guess that leads me to say that this distro is one of the most well documented ones I have ever used. Gentoo would be the only other who comes close but that is needed just with the complexity involved in the install.

I will say though that everything looks perfectly in order.  The DHCPCD is good, and it shows that you are connected.  I assume you recognize an error as a browser does not connect.  But have your tried other web-tools to see if they can connect?  A good starting point would be ping.  Try each of the following:
    ping -c 3 google.com
    ping -c 3 8.8.8.8
    and post the output here.
I did try a ping on the google site both with the name server as well as the ip while going through the network wiki. I also tried a ping to the router it self without success.

I guess one thing I did forget to mention is that the LEDs on the ethernet card seem to be functioning as well when I plug the cable in.
    EDIT:
    Interesting Update.
I was able to connect to my router as well as the internet by switching over to a static IP. I made sure to set it as high as possible but it did work. I was browsing around and saw another post on the forums and someone suggested to switch to static IP to help troubleshoot the problem.

  • After Software Update 2007-004 airport card stopped working after wakeup

    Hi,
I have a powerbook G4 - DVI running 10.3.9. After I have installed Software Update 2007-003, when my computer goes to sleep and then wakes up, airport card stops working. I had to open the back of the computer, unplug and plug the airport card, then it starts working again. But next time the computer goes to sleep, it stops working again.
Does anyone have a similar problem? Any work arounds?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Ethernet has stopped working after installing "Security Update 2010-003"

I installed the update recently and have been unable to connect to the internet. The network still gives me an ip, but the internet and server button remain "orange". The wifi still works.
Has this happened with anyone else? I am curious as to how I can either uninstall the update or make the ethernet work again..
Much thanks for any recommendations you may have.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'm not having that problem after installing the security update.
If you open the Network panel of System Preferences and select the Ethernet connection item, is it set to "Configure" "Using DHCP"? Do you see reasonable values for "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", "Router", and DNS Server"?

  • [SOLVED] DVB-C card stopped working (after update?)

edit: Marked as solved because the problem hasn't occurred for years.
I have a TechnoTrend TT-Budget C-1501 PCI DVB-C card which used to work fine. Today I installed a bunch of updates including new kernel and now the card doesn't work. Current kernel version is 3.9.2-1-ARCH, as reported by uname -r. I don't remember the kernel version which was installed when the card worked but I installed Arch about a month ago and this was the first upgrade.
    dmesg gives the following information:

This problem seems to be relatively common with cards containing the TDA10023 chip but I haven't found a proper solution. Is this just a bug or should I adjust something?
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the card works on Windows.
    Hardware specs:
    Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 CPU
    16GB of RAM
ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP motherboard (BIOS/UEFI version seems to be the latest (1.50))

Weird, now it's working again after "cold" boot... Could the Windows driver load a different firmware which doesn't work properly on Linux? I think I used the card on Windows just before rebooting to Arch...

    hi all!
yesterday I performed a system update trough the ThinkVantage System Update 3, I chose a complete update (even the BIOS).
After the update, the sound card is not working anymore: everything in the control panel looks fine, volume is up and all's connected, but no sound is coming out, with the exception of the skype system sound when starting/quitting the application...
No system restore is possible (it looks disabled by our IT dept), updated the drivers via windows update, but no help.

  • Satellite L550 - Flash Cards stopped working after Windows 7 64bit repair

I tried installing/reinstalling/uninstalling and then installing again, Toshiba Value Added Package and flash cards support utility. No luck...
Flash cards utility is installed: [https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3002908/Capture.PNG]
    What now? :)
    Laptop model: L550-15F (PSLN4E)
Also, does anyone know why a search for drivers for my model returns bluetooth stack package but my model doesn't seem to have bluetooth? :)

    Hi
Wait a moment, please! In which order you have installed/reinstalled the Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility? It would be interesting to know what you have done exactly.
I have used the following repair order for this problem:
I uninstalled Flash Cards Support Utility and then Value Added Package. I did make a restart and cleaned the system by using CCleaner. One restart more and I installed Value Added Package firstly and then Flash Cards Support Utility. Now I did make the last restart and the FN keys started to work!
Its important that you install the new versions for Windows 7!
That means Flash Cards Support Utility version 1.63.0.4 and VAP version 1.2.34_64. I founded both on the Toshiba website :)

  • Intel wired ethernet driver stops working

We have this issue with several T400 and T500 series ThinkPads that the Intel ethernet driver stops working after a while. All this started to happen maybe a month ago. We have both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7 OSs.
Wired ethernet works ok first, but after a few hours or a day or two this yellow exclamation mark appears on the network icon and it says limited or no connectivity. Wired network stops working and there is nothing we can do to fix this other than reboot the computer. It doesn't even shut down properly, just says "Shutting down" forever and blinks the HDD led maybe once a second. So we have to force it and after booting everything is ok until the next time this happens.
When the network stops working, nothing can be done with the driver because everything just hangs. You cannot disable the connection or uninstall the adapter from Device Manager or anything. Unplugging the ethernet cable does not help either. There is nothing about this problem in the Event log other than about the symptoms of not having a network connection.
What could be the source of this problem? Do you have any ideas about how to diagnose this problem further? We have the newest driver and I have also tried the newest driver from Intel.

Go to Local Area Connection (Wired Intel adapter), Properties and the Configure button, in the Power Management Tab UNCHECK "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power".
Window7 does NOT always resolve IP and DHCP when it come out of sleep etc. All attempt to release/renew are in vain. I have seen this on various systems for some time. Occassionally a router reboot fixes it but most of the time is the PC. Frustrating but for Wired use this should always be disabled if you're using it a lot. Power savings is not in your best interest.
Let me know if that does it.

  • After i updated to mavericks, my usb ethernet adapter stopped working.

I'm not sure why, but when I updated my software to mavericks, my USB ethernet adapter stopped working.

    I'm using that adapter:
    http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.php?pd_id=445&pl1_id=5&pl2_id=26
After I updated to Mavericks, I installed the driver in this page, but it didn't work. Then I googled "AX88772" which is my adapter's part no. or something like that, and I installed that one:
    http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=driverdetail&PItemID=97
I wasn't expecting that work but that did work. So, I think the solution of the problem is finding the right driver. I hope you solve your problem too.

After this, I must reboot the MacBook Air to get the dongle working again. Do anybody know how to force the AppleUSBEthernet driver to rescan the device tree (or something similar)?
    With regards,
    Birger Retterstøl Olaisen

I have exactly the same problem here (MacBook Air 2,1 - OSX 10.6.8). After several tries (and reboots!), I've found that an unload/reload of the USB Ethernet driver works.
Note that operation is not automatic: I have to execute commands in a terminal in order to retrieve my Ethernet connection... but it is far better than a reboot!
So, if  you want to test my method, once you have plugged a USB key (or after an hotplug of your USB-ethernet dongle), you can execute these commands on your terminal (note there are 2 lines and no space in the kext name, a space may be inserted by this forum):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
Of course, i've made a small script with these commands, and copied it on my PATH so it is even easier to execute it. It works perfectly for me, and I hope it could help.

  • After Service, Airport card stops working randomly on macbook pro 17" early 2009

    Hi,
So after the last time my computer was serviced, the airport card stops working randomly on moving the screen.
Upons restarting the computer, it sometimes says wi-fi hardware not installed. Then, if I move my machine around,
lift it up, turn it around, place it back on the table and restart it, it works again. I don't understand this.
And all this started happening the moment my warranty ran out. Extremely frustrating!!

It may be possible that one of the following may be the issue:
The internal AirPort Extreme card is not seated properly.
The internal Wi-Fi antenna connector is not seated properly in the AirPort Extreme card.
The internal AirPort Extreme card's connector is faulty or damaged.
The internal AirPort Extreme card is faulty.
To get an idea on how the Extreme card is installed, please check out the following iFixit article.

  • USB audio DAC stops working after suspend

I didn't update my mediacenter running arch for a few months so I figured i'd reinstall it because of the filesystem, /lib and grub changes. Now after reinstalling I'm running into the issue that my USB audio DAC stops working after a suspend.
After a suspend speaker-test gives me the following error:
    [user@mediacenter ~]$ speaker-test -c 2
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1068:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -77,File descriptor in bad state
I've tried replugging my DAC and restarting ALSA, without any success. I have to reboot to get sound again.

Yes I am suspecting the kernel as well. I'll try to change some options in XBMC to maybe get this working, and if not I'll see how far I can downgrade with the kernel. My last installation was a few months old so I hope it broke not that long ago.

  • USB hub and internet sharing stop working after sleep

    Hi,
I have a relatively new Bluestork USB hub I purchased to connect multiple USB devices I have at the same time. It used to work correctly under Leopard, but now it stops working each time the computer wakes up from sleep. I have to restart the computer for it to start working again. Both link and power LEDs stay on, even when the hub is not recognized.
My second problem is related to internet sharing. It stops working after each sleep/wakeup cycle and the only way to make it work again is to restart the computer. It used to work correctly before Snow Leopard as well.
I have all the Mac updates installed.

    Thanks Barry.
The hub is on its way to the manufacturer for after sales service...
But the issue with AirPort remains the same, even after resetting SMC.
    Some clarification:
    * It happens just after computer wakes up from sleep. Restarting solves the problem and the issue doesn't arise until computer goes standby again.
    * The whole WiFi card becomes unresponsive. It is not only the Turn Off button, but the whole functionality is stopped. The card can not be activated/deactivated and it doesn't connect to any network. If it is used for internet sharing, clients are unable to connect.

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
    Steps I've taken:
    Disk Persmission
    PRAM
    SMC
    Reapplied the 10.9.2 update
    Sent feedback to Apple

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

Since the 4.4.2 update, my phone and my wife's phone (14 or 15 month old SIII's) that worked perfect a couple weeks ago no longer know where they are 95% percent of the time... Location cannot be found and GPS satellites cannot be seen (sometimes after searching for 10 - 20 minutes they will lock on).
And it's not just Google maps, it is all apps that need location (ie. gps status and toolbox, weather channel, etc...)
Google maps has us in the right location 50% of the time  but i think that has more to do with 4g and wifi (although i always know the weather and traffic conditions in the next town over now).
Navigation will set up fine in Google maps until you actual move the car. Then it updates location every couple minutes, but usually a couple streets over from where I actually am. Maybe 1 out of every four or five times I try it, it will start working about 15 minutes after I started it (then work flawlessly, so it can actually work sometimes). But if you end the process and start over to see if it really "works", back to square one with it not knowing its location all over again...
I obviously did all the normal trouble shooting fixes with the battery and sim card removals and even did a "recommended factory data reset" on my phone with no luck. After this didn't work I stopped by another verizon store yesterday that has "tech services" that I was told could run some sort of diagnostics on my phone. After I showed the tech all the screen shots i have taken of what was happening while driving, he said it is a software problem and a very common one at that.
I was told I should either buy new phones or switch to the edge program where i can get a new phones. These don't seem like very fair solutions to me considering before the 4.4.2 update our phones worked perfect and they are both in almost perfect condition after 14 or 15 months...
Will there be a fix to this??? Is it a Samsung problem??? Should I be contacting them???

If it is 3GS, you can update it to iOS 5 and it will work.
