Ethernet/IP module - IEEE-1588 CIP Sync

Hi,
I have an application where reatime position setpoint is desired (each 0.008sec). I have to talk from a CVS 1459RT (or any cRIO) to Allen Bradley Kinetix Drive. I've read some document and learn that AB use an addon to Ethernet/IP when deterministic application is require which is called CIP Sync (IEEE 1588) protocol.
Does the Ethernet/IP module support this protocol? I think AB doesn't support Ethercat...
I talked to NI and they suggest me to send the position via digital output of the FPGA by simulating an encoder. That is a good idea but is there other way to communicate deterministically? CIP Sync look to be the way ...
Thank you,
Patrick

Hi paubine
According to my understanding, IEEE 1588 only adds syncronization standards to Ethernet/IP. I am not sure if the Ethernet IP Module would give you predifined functions for that, however, I found this example of IEEE 1588 for cRIO.
Community: cRIO IEEE 1588 Synchronization Example
They used basic SMT VIs to build it, so I think you might be able to do the same for the AB PLC.

  • PXI-6682 read IEEE-1588 timestamp from 7953R over RTSI bus

    Hi,
I am relatively new to LabVIEW
programming, although I have two years of hard experience using LabVIEW
    FPGA tools.
    So, I
    have a PXI-1033 chassis, and I have plugged in an PXI-6682 IEEE-1588
card into slot 2 and a PXI-7953R card into slot 4.  (Random selection
for slot 4)  What I am trying to do is read the GPS timestamp from the
6682 card via the RTSI lines directly into the 7953R FPGA card.
Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start and what to read, and all
the examples (keywords: RTSI, IEEE-1588)  that I find are for how to
read the IEEE-1588 timestamp inside the Host Operating system and
nothing tells me how to do it directly from the FPGA.  My goal is to
build a machine that timestamps network packets that are being read by
the FPGA hosted inside the PXI-7953R card.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?  I
basically want to learn more about RTSI, where the PXI-6682 outputs its
IEEE-1588 timestamp, and how data is transferred over the RTSI bus from
    inside a PXI chassis.
    Thanks,
    John

    Thanks for the response Alejandro,
I have a 7953R FlexRIO board with the Mimas Prevas Dual Gigabit Adapter Module (http://www.prevas.com/ethernet_simulator.html) plugged in.  Ethernet packets enter the Mimas Dual Gigabit Adapter and then go directly to the FPGA as raw Ethernet frames.
From what you are telling me it seems like I cannot have a timestamp go from the PXI-6682 to the 7953R via the RTSI lines and to then be appended to the end of the ethernet frame before being retrasmitted out the other port of the Dual Gigabit Adapter. (With proper recalculation of the 32 bit CRC being done inside the FPGA of course)
I will do some more reading of the manuals and will then call NI Support.
    Thanks again!

  • Is EVS IEEE-1588 capable?

I've been working with a NI PXI chassis with a 6682 card that syncs to the IEEE-1588 Master clock in a Rockwell Automation PLC over ethernet.  Can an NI Embedded Vision System (EVS) perform the IEEE-1588 synchronization?  If not now, is there a plan to develop this capability?

There is no explicit hardware support for 1588 on the EVS, but the NI-TimeSync plugin with software 1588 support should work. I believe you can expect sub-millisecond performance with the software-based solution on RT systems. See this page ( http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2520/lang/en ) for details.

  • CRS-1 8-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module

How much is the back plane speed for a line card on CRS-1? Does using a 8-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module in CRS-1 have an oversubscription of 2:1, like the WS-X6708 in 7209 chassis?

Just to add to Jon's post, it should be up to seven with dual sups or up to eight with single sup.
(Line cards are hot swappable, but I agree with Jon, ideally they should be changed during planned maintenance - just in case.)
BTW, if you're going to load up a 6509 with that many 10g cards, you may want to insure some or all have DFCs.  If you do use DFCs, don't forget possible issues when matching them to sup.
Also BTW, if you need even more 10g ports, there also the 6708 and 6716 line cards for sup720s, but if you have a sup2T, there's also the 6816 and 6908.

  • CRIO 1588 Software Sync Error [swsync]

    I have 2 cRIO 9074's w/ 9144 ethercat expansions.  The cRIO's are 1588 slaves to a PXI-6682 GPS module.
I am getting spurious errors (2147137804 - Master is no longer sync'd with the slave device acting as the reference clock)
that appear as scan engine faults within the Distributed System Manager.
Could someone please explain the meaning of this error?

These are the devices present in the network:

I attached a block diagram that describes the Network Topology. The cRIO is connected by ethernet cable, while sbRIO is connected by WiFi.
    Both BAT-C and Open-BAT support WiFi 802.11 b/g/n.
I don't think that the problem could be that the WiFi connection get broken for some reason. Both the cRIO and the sbRIO send a continuous stream of the data to the PC. The stream (6 Mbit/s) coming from the sbRIO, that uses WiFi, arrives correctly without any lost in data also after the loss of PTP synchronization. If the connection was broken, I think that also this data stream would be corrupted.
All the devices in the network are setted with a static IP address.

  • Please help troubleshoot why SM-SRE WAAS module can't time sync with NTP server

I have a remote WAAS site where a SM-SRE-900 module is plugged in a 2945 router. Everything is fine except the module can't sync its time to the NTP server. Its NTP was configured right and it can reach the NTP server with no problem. There's no authentication configured. But somehow it can't associate with the NTP server. I have tried manual NTP sync, but it failed too.
The same NTP server and config is also used for many other WAAS site and the CM. They are all fine. I'm running WAAS 4.2.3 build 7. The module isn't showing any other alarms.
Here is some show outputs and the manual NTP sync result. I noticed its poll is only 64 seconds while all other sites are showing 1024 seconds.
    waas1#sh ntp status
    ntp enabled
    ntp authentication disabled
    server list:
    Server           Key
    10.0.0.1         -
remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset  jitter

    10.0.0.1        66.96.98.9       3 u   43   64  377   16.828  2359370 2421.24

16 Dec 22:06:20 ntpdate[9835]: bind() fails: Permission denied
Failed to set software clock using NTP server 10.0.0.1

What the SRE-900 have as it's time?  Use the show clock command.  Does it match within a few minutes of ntp already, if not, and if this is not the first first clock set out of the box, then ntp sync might fail.
You might try to manually set the clock correctly (set clock ... something), then see if the ntp server will sync.

  • What are the limitation of the 4 Port Gigabit ethernet Security Service Module (4GE SSM)?

I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I am trying to create a redundancy topology which require several connections to an ASA 5510. I am looking at extending the connections to my ASA 5510 appliance with the four port gig ethernet security module (4GE SSM). I am trying to find out what the limitations are on this particular module.
I have heard that there might be limitations to the 4GE SSM. Such as the interfaces on this module might process data separately from the ASA 5510 appliance. My question is does the ASA four port gig ethernet security module (4GE SSM) interfaces act as a extension of the ASA 5510 appliance or does it process and filter data separate from the ASA 5510 appliance ?
My concerns are that the 4GE SSM does not utilize all the security features of the ASA 5510 appliance, and that it just separates traffic into security zones. I interpret that to mean that each interface can be placed in a separate security level in which case has a separate security algorithm and uses the security level to force security policies. Nothing more.
My second question if relevant would be what are the limitations?
Thank you for your help on this topic.
    mike

The 4GE SSM just gives you the four additional ports. It doesn't increase the processing capacity of the 5510 (a relatively low end box whose replacement - the 5515X -  has been out since this past spring). It works off the same configuration script and CPU as all the built-in ports.
The only limitation I can think of off the top of my head is that members of an Etherchannel cannot span the SSM and the built-in ports.

  • 7600+RSP 720-3CXL and 6500 Gbit ethernet modules (WS-X6748-***) compatible?

    Hello all,
We are planning the replacement of a 7206 with a 7603-S, 7604 or 7606-S with RSP 720-3CXL to support full internet routing. The problem is RSP720 comes with only 2 x SFP and we need more L3 interfaces to terminate on the router.
Can the above configuration (7600 with RSP720-3CXL) work with WS-X6748-** line cards?
The "relevant interfaces and modules" link for the 7600:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps368/products_relevant_interfaces_and_modules.html does not list these as options.
If these are compatible, whats really the difference between a 6500 linecard and a SIP+SPA gbit configuration? (besides price)
    Thanks in advance

    Mario
They are listed under the Ethernet part of the table -
    Cisco 7600 Series / Catalyst 6500 Series 10/100 & 10/100/1000 Ethernet Interface Modules
    10/100 & 10/100/1000
    Data Sheet
still worth checking the release notes to check your supervisor/IOS supports them.
As for difference, well the 67xx cards are purely ethernet, they don't support any other encapsulation whereas the SIP, from a quick check supports many encapsulations, although not ethernet.
I'm not that familiar with the SPAs but for example on the 67xx cards you cannot configure shaping which may be an issue for you. I don't know whether the SPAs permit shaping or not. Obviously you get a lot more port density using 67xx cards.
Only thing i can suggest is going through datasheets to see the difference.

  • C6513 Ace Module Pair not syncing

    Hi,
I have a failover pair of Ace Modules that have stopped syncing - Active not syncing with Standby. I have checked the config and it seems that recent additions of contexts in the Admin Context to resource groups and fault tolerant additions of ft groups have not synced across to the standby unit. All other config checks out as okay.
Can anyone point me in a good direction to restart the sync?
    Thanks
    Adrian

    Adrian-
To see the error - login to the context that isn't syncing and issue "show ft config-error"
Scripts and SSL keys/certs are not synced over, they will cause an FT sync error.  If that was what happened, then upload the files to the context, then toggle "ft auto-sync running-config" on the active context and it will re-try the sync.
If the issue was not key/cert or script related, get a TAC case open, it is extremely likely there is a bug involved.

  • Enet IP communication with 1794-AENT module

Has anyone had success with communicating with the Rockwell 1794-AENT/B ethernet modules?  I have one of the Flex I/O ethernet interface modules with two 8 port analog in modules connected.  I can read the 1794/AENT module information, using the ENET-I/P library, like model, version etc but nothing representing the I/O data.

    Kudos! Thanks!

Adam, I am using Labview 8.6 with the EtherNet-IP library.  I have a ethernet connection to the 1749-AENT/B module and that is woring and tested.  Attached to the 1749-AENT/B interface is a 1749-IE8K 8 port analog input module.
I am able to read the attributes from the 1794-AENT/B module using the Ethernet-I/P library's "EthernetIP CIP Get Attribute Single VI" function in Labview.  I get the name of the module, the major and minor versions, the type of module etc.  What I can’t seem to figure out is how to read the I/O data from the 1794-IE8K module attached to the 1749-AENT/B.  I'm trying to use the "EthernetIP Tag Read VI" function in the same library.  It might be that I just don’t know what the “Tag Names” are supposed to be.I’m using an Ethernet-IP “EthernetIP Tag Read VI” function from the Labview library that is wanting several variables.  The network path is the IP address of the module and I know that’s right.  Also asking for a “Tag name” and number of elements.  These two I’m not sure about, maybe one of your guys can help me with what the Tag name should be and how many elements there should be.  Also I can select the type of data out which can be an SINT, DINT, INT, BOOL, STRING, RAW or REAL.  I’m assuming INT or DINT then scale. Thanks for the help.  Greg Yotz CVC

  • -251723760 CIP Error when trying to read and array of sgl from and AB ControlLogix PLC

I have the NI Ethernet/IP module to communicate with an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC. I am doing both reading (only 13 values) and writing (over 200 values). I am using the basic ethernetip tag write.vi to  do the writing. These program are in an executable running on a 'run-time' machine. I have the list of tagnames I am reading and writing to and have confirmed with the person who created the AB load that the array I am writing to on the AB side has more than enough addresses (it is an array of length 300). However I am only able to write 118 values to it. When trying to write 119 or more I get the error:
-251723760 CIP error - extended status may be available
I have confirmed with NI OPC Servers with an OPC quick client (running on my development PC) connected to the AB ControlLogix that the values I am writing to up to element 118 are getting through correctly, i.e. if I write 123.456 to sample_array[13] then I in fact see this same value at that location in the OPC quick client.
To be honest I am a little disappointed that the error message is so cryptic and gives no hints as to what troubleshooting paths are possible. I have tried various combinations of group/tag names with and w/o offsets, e.g. [3], but nothing has led me any further.

Thanks for the quick response - here are screenshots of before (write OK - writing 118 values - all except last are 0) and after (error - when trying to write an array of length 119) as well as the simple test program I as using.

  • Data acquisition time using Fieldpoint with Ethernet Comm Mod

I am using a simple Labview program that is a simple Do While loop that gets a signal from a Fieldpoint AI module using a FP1601 ethernet communications module.  The signal is changing at a rate of 50 ms or so but I cannot get the program to read it quickly.  I am using a Wait Millisecond to control the speed of the acquisition and for some reason I can not get the data from the Fieldpoint module faster that approximately 0.7 seconds, even if I put 50 ms as the Wait Millisecond.  I tried to change the acquistion time of the AI module (it is at 10 ms) but this doesn't help.

Hardware filter setting was my hunch.
Be aware the Fluke may be performing averaging internally and have a slower response time, thus your Fieldpoint data may be real. The only way to know for sure is to hook up an oscilloscope to the device.
Can't suggest any specific filtering, it may depend on the nature of the 'noise'
